I had no…read moreknowledge/previous involvement of the Presbyterian faith prior to attending New City, but I felt wanted and invited there all the same, and I found New City to be a place that truly lives out love, grace, and sacrifice. The attendants act out their faith through generous giving to those in need in Norwood, especially Sharpsburg students. Huge perk of New City: they have a great kids' ministry with separate classes for every age, so your child gets individualized attention and age-appropriate lessons while you're in the church service. All kids' ministry volunteers are background checked and trained. I highly encourage checking out New City, whether or not you have any faith background. You will be welcomed with open arms. Be sure to get there a little early so you can find street parking and grab a fresh cup of Deeper Roots coffee.

University Christian Church is a church where 9 out of 10 faces you'll see there are college-aged. That isn't to say the church is unwelcoming to other age groups, just that it sits less than 100 yards from UC's campus. The church itself is very outwardly focused, trying to affect the immediate area as well as places all over the world, sending missionaries to places like South America and Africa. The service on Sunday is varied, with the music duties being handled by all kinds of different artists. The sermons are pointed and include scripture as well as applicable lessons. If you happen to visit, I can guarantee you'll feel welcome.

Mass Times: Saturday 4:30; Sunday 8:15, 10:30, 5:30 Daily Mass: 8:00 in the chapel on the third floor of the Catholic Center (enter the ground floor double doors off Herman St.) This church has the feel and beauty of old Catholic churches-elaborate interior painting, stained glass, stone structure. Fun fact: It served as the Cathedral during the 40's and 50's. (It's very popular for weddings.) The congregation is led by a Franciscan priest, and is diverse in many realms. This is the Newman Center for UC, so there is a student population-most prominent at the 5:30 Sunday masses. Logistically, parking can be a bit tricky-especially for the 10:30 mass during the academic year. The entrance to the parking lot is off of the University Ct./Fairview side as the street curves. The entrance to the back parking lot is further up Herman St. There is additional parking on Sundays in the Deaconess lot, also off of Herman St. or University Ct. Meeting space is available in the Catholic Center. Entrances, again, can be a little tricky-there are three options. There are double doors on the ground floor off of Herman St., there are glass doors on the Herman Street side at the top of the stairs, and finally, there is an entrance to the hall from the parking lot on the side of the church rectory-it's down about 4 steps. I've found people friendly, they have parish-wide events frequently throughout the year-and these usually have great pot-lucks!

The facilities are very nice with a large sanctuary with comfortable chairs, a cafe-style area, large fellowship area, and a cry room among other things. They have ample opportunities to serve the community and the world with their outreach programs with various participation levels so everyone can help. They also have activities for children such as VBS and summer Sunday school. They also offer schooling during the school year pre-K. My children attended. Their teachers and staff are fabulous! I cannot say that enough. They go the extra mile and then some. So overall, it's a great place to worship and give your kids a good academic start. They have something for everyone and everyone is welcome. The only thing I would change would be year round Sunday school for all ages, but I honestly think they have enough to keep us busy, active, and fulfilled.
