This place was cheap, friendly, and fast! What more do you want? I guess some folks want to be pampered, and there's nothing wrong with that. But, for me, it's hard to be $28, a crisp lager in hand, and out the door 30 minutes later! The vibe isn't overly masculine like some barber shops. All types of folks come here and all types of folks cut here. The woman that cut my hair was apparently the daughter of the owners. She was really friendly and a great conversationalist. I've been here a handful of times. It's probably one of the most affordable barber shops in the city. I've paid as high as $40-50 in other spots in Anchorage for a simple cut. Here, I've paid between $20-30 for the same service, depending on the barber. For whatever reason, the establishment does not set prices. Rather, each individual barber does. I find that odd, but it's not unique to this barber shop, at least not in Anchorage. One thing that is unique about here is they have a liquor license. They don't advertise it, but they do. If you're wondering why they have a sign saying you must be 21 to drink, that's why. Just ask. They have a few different beers. Complimentary. One consistent theme I've noticed is I'm usually not in the barber chair for more than 15 minutes, no matter who cuts my hair. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like they could take a little more time to do a little better job, like a washing the gel out of my hair before they cut it or using a straight razor on the back of my neck and sideburns. I have noticed the barber picking up the pace as more customers pile in behind me, especially as closing time nears. Again, maybe not a bad thing but I personally do not mind waiting, but I do mind feeling rushed. read more

In Anchorage temporarily for work and I have been putting off getting a haircut but I have waited too long. I cant wait until I get home so I turned to yelp and found that the barbershops in the area were either under reviewed or just didn't look that great. I finally settled on Northern Lights and I am glad I did. I stopped in around mid day on a weekday and one of the girls (there were three barbers in there) was finishing up with a customer. I sat down with one of the other two and explained my concern with finding a "new" barber while away from home. She quickly made me feel comfortable and I could tell she was confident and competent. Great haircut, listened to me and did exactly what I was looking for. Reasonable price, ample parking out front, comfortable shop, and three very friendly ladies running the place. I will definitely return when I am in Anchorage! read more

Very good barber, and as advertised, there was no wait. The barber was quick and knew what she was doing. I will definitely visit again if I need a haircut in Anchorage. This is the second and last haircut my husband will have at Northern Lights Barber Shop. I never write bad reviews, but this one just had to be done. It appears that the barber had one hand tied behind her back and a blindfold over her eyes!!! It looks like she use the shortest size clipper blade she had....that is until she got to the top of his head then jumped 3-4 sizes bigger. I am not sure why she would let him walk around town with her name and shop all over his head. This is the worst possible advertising ever!!!! It looks ridiculous!!! It is a good thing that love is blind. I just look at him and think....poor guy, so sweet and now so sweet and goofy looking!!! Shame on you! read more

They were Professional, nice, they had a cute dog, (bonus), and they cut his hair exactly like he wanted. Before I share this review, I want to say that boyfriend has come here before and has had great haircuts. He chooses to come here to support local business. HOWEVER, today he went to get a haircut before being in a friend's wedding and was very disappointed. He had a woman who has been there just two weeks and left with a very uneven haircut and after had to go to a different barber to have his hair fixed. The second barber was very surprised and questioned how this person was allowed to cut hair. Luckily the second barbershop was able to fix his hair but had to make it shorter than he wanted. Hopefully this location provides more opportunities for practice and training so that this negative experience can be avoided for future customers. read more

Nice place. I came in on a Saturday and had almost no wait. $17 for a cut, which seems okay for the Anchorage area (a little bit pricey for someone from Arizona). It's not really what I think of as a barber shop. The staff was all women, which is cool, but there wasn't any of the normal shooting the s*** that normally happens in a barber shop. Also, the other barber shops I've been to in the lower 48 usually have a back rub after the haircut, as well as a rinse (without shampoo). This was just a quick cut and out the door. The magazines aren't fresh. One of them was a car mag with a 350z on the cover (which ended production in 2008). But as far as the haircut goes, it was good and fast. read more

Extremely disappointed. Ugh. After reading the reviews I had high hopes for this place because finding a good barber shop is like finding gold. I got my haircut by Dar. Nice lady and pleasant conversation for the short few minutes I was in the seat. For that and the safety protocols they follow I'll give them two stars. My hair was long because I hadn't had a cut since before the pandemic. I told her I used to be in the military and I retired about 8 months ago, and that I used to get a 1.5 on the sides and short on top, but that I wanted it longer. I said I wanted a 2 on the sides, slightly tapered and a little long on the the top, about 2 inches and showed her a generous amount with my fingers and said we could take more off the top if necessary. I thought I was pretty clear about that especially after using a visual hand gesture for reference. Well I guess I wasn't clear enough about any of it cause I got butchered! I mean it feels like I'm having flashbacks like I just got a bad BX cut. At least those were only $7-8 bucks. I mean it's not a horrible cut if I wanted a military buzz cut, but that's exactly what I didn't want and I thought that was pretty clear. She didn't listen very well or just wasn't paying good attention. I got a 1 on the sides, at best, faded/blended high, and not even an inch left on top. She was using clippers on the top and I just knew that was a bad sign. She did leave me a poof of longer hair that was pretty ridiculous up front, which I asked to be cut down to look a little more normal and she did use scissors for that. But overall it's nothing like I asked for and very, very short all over. I'm seeing spots where it doesn't look even too. I wish I could go somewhere else to get it fixed, but there's hardly anything left to work with. Bad hair cuts are the worst.! Luckily it still grows back, but I'm still extremely disappointed and won't be back and I wouldn't recommend this place. read more
