My dogs are well mannered and loved by people when they meet them. We've travelled extensively with them to high-end hotels and very casual places like this one. However, The Owner jumped away from my dogs when they approached her to say, 'hi'. I was puzzled to see that in a country setting that's supposedly dog friendly. She clearly doesnt like other peoples dogs. She couldnt even look at them. She has a lap dog. 3 times we were given the wrong pass code to the door. It was raining and I had to walk to and from to the office while getting soaked. Our dogs were locked inside the cabin that was unlocked when we got there. When they saw their mommy struggling to get in the door they started to get agitated and jumped on the sliding glass door frantically. Owner Amy got mad and said that was 'unacceptable.' She couldnt have that. 'Not gonna happen.' She then walked away for a 4th try at getting the correct passcode while muttering on. She was clearly in a huff and mad. That was strange. What were the dog fees for? And they had our credit card on file. She never apologized for the problem that she caused by having us locked out. We were wet and confused at her behavior. She never gave me a chance to respond. And our dogs were frightened. Not a good way to start a getaway. I never saw Amy, or her husband Steve for the next 3 days. Ever. No checking on us. Nothing. It was like they were 'ghosts'. You knew they were there but never saw them. I discovered a 2" thick folder later. There was a Demand List for the visitors. It was printed with black and blue letters on a dark blue background. Almost unreadable. Dogs could not be left in the room unattended ever'. Also they were not allowed on their furniture. My dogs have been on nicer furniture in nicer places without any problems. This is a country cabin. The furniture is not new. The rugs are old and faded. The bedspreads are outdated and mixed matched. Thats the first time we ever had to do that, even in high-end hotels with much nicer furnishings. My dogs are quiet and well behaved. But that was the rules. So we abided reluctantly. Also, we received no tour of the grounds or mention of the water sport toys laying about. It was a real unwelcoming vibe. It was like a dark 'Gray' cloud of gloom was hovering like a 'Ghost' overhead. We would have left the day we arrived but it was raining, late, and we were tired. It was a 7 hour drive to an isolated area. They lucked out. We did not. P.S. My husband and I run several vacation rentals in varied places and enjoy serving happy travelers.

Monica greeted us when we arrived and made us feel right at home! Our cabin was spotlessly clean (thank you, Monica!); the shower water pressure was strong and great; we had seemingly endless hot water for showers, dishes, etc.; the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking; and the bed was comfortable. The surrounding guests were incredibly quiet, so it was an idyllic little place to be. We loved the paddle boards and kayaks and used them multiple times a day. The river is what paddle board dreams are made of bc the water is so calm. For us, the availability to use these water toys added serious value to our stay and made the price of the stay a great value. We also loved paddling just across the river to Maynard's for coffee and breakfast in the morning. That was an unexpected treat to have that cozy, very affordable restaurant right across from us! Additionally, this location is the perfect access point for the ferry to Mt. Kineo, which is a must-do while you're here! The ferry leaves from Rockwood, which is three miles down the road. Another must-do is Rockwood Bar and Grille! The buffalo chicken pizza with blue cheese base was the best pizza my husband and I have ever had! We stayed in cabin three, and when we initially pulled up I was a bit dismayed because there is a not-so-aesthetically appealing little storage hut right in front of cabin three, which is a direct obstruction to the river view. However, I quickly got over that bc everything else about this place was so great for us! We highly recommend this place as an affordable home base for exploring this part of Maine! I am almost afraid to write how great this place is for fear that it will get crowded. These…read morecabins/lodge opened in 2010, and my husband and I have been visiting since 2011 every summer except one. I just returned from another five-night stay in one of the cabins that doesn't have plumbing. But, it's right along the beautiful lake. The bigger cabins are set back just up the hill a bit, so if you need your own potty and a shower, go for one of those. Otherwise, the shared bath is clean and nice. Shower towels are provided, so you only need one for swimming. Also, each cabin has it's own cast iron stove and wood provided. They are propane lit for a romantic glow each evening. All of the kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards (plus life-preservers) are there for the taking. There's a raft to swim out to, fishing if you get a state license, and a beautiful fire pit (wood provided). Hiking in the area is nice and varies in length and difficulty, so the whole family can enjoy. All meals included - Breakfast and lunch family style - all dietary needs are met - allergies, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, etc. (And a bag lunch to go). They even have trail mix and home baked goods available all day. You don't have to bring any food (and they have wine and beer available to put on your tab at dinner - and it's a good selection, too! The food this year was outstanding. Abby's soups were gourmet, and all her dishes were as good as a good restaurant in NYC. Really. Brent, the lodge director, was great as well. He and his staff were friendly, accommodating, and informative. He takes pride in providing an amazing stay. This year there was a guitar, banjo and ukulele on the hearth in the lodge to pick up and play. There's a ping pong table, games, puzzles, books, etc. - and looking out at the view from the lodge is it's own activity. Gorgeous!! Katie brought a solar telescope to look at the sun. Very cool, and last year we looked at the moon and some planets. She also led a fun, educational program identifying skulls. DO NOT GO IF YOU NEED TO BE CONNECTED TO THE WIFI ALL THE TIME. I got a few texts, but not all went through --and it's not that kind of place anyway. My iPhone was just a camera for this trip. GO THERE UNPLUGGED FOR THE PERFECT STAY.

As was the sunset: reds and pinks and oranges and golds. We couldn't have asked for a lovelier way to finish a day of hiking in Baxter. The property at 5 Lakes Lodge is beautiful; from the expansive green lawn to the tiny private beach, there are plenty of places to sit and watch the loons. The rooms themselves have been meticulously loved and maintained by the owners. It feels like staying in a (fancy) log cabin, only with a spa-like bathroom! Did I mention the views of Katahdin? Just wow. The only hiccup for us was with the hospitality itself. Unlike others' experiences, we felt that owner Rick was gruff with us. It took several back and forths just to reserve the room itself, after that we never received any confirmation email, and when we asked about whether he and his wife were vaccinated/what their masking policy was (considering Millinocket was considered a highly transmissible area at the time) he was quite brusque. Also, while the check-in policy said anytime between 3pm and 9pm, at 5:30pm we received a phone call sternly asking why we weren't there yet. Then, when we declined breakfast in the morning to sit by the water in the sunshine with our coffees, he was outright annoyed with us ("what do you mean you don't want breakfast?!"). Deb, on the other hand, was very friendly and a joy to speak with, but she also seemed quite surprised that we would want to be outside instead of their incredibly hot, closed-up kitchen (where the TV was on, news blaring) on such a beautiful summer morning. I believe these current owners tried to sell before the pandemic and didn't, so maybe we just met them at the wrong time of their BnB owning journey.

The bed was great, the in-room bath great- we just struggled with the owners. The man and woman here make great food and definitely maintain a beautiful property- however I felt reprimanded in every step I took. We had just hiked Katahdin and the car was full of crap, so around 9PM we went out and grabbed some stuff. The male owner came out and asked us what we were doing. Very aggressively. Just grabbing clothes man! We were being quiet and respectful, it was quite alarming. We got breakfast in their B&B kitchen before heading out, and again, the man owner was very cruel. At first I thought he was kidding around, but nope, he is just that mean. Also bad was asking privately the woman owner for an extra roll of toilet paper as we were out, and she berated me for using toilet paper in front of the entire breakfast room full of people. Several times. It was humiliating. It's a view that can't be beat, and I'm really grateful I got to stay here, but I can't recommend a place that is mad at having well-behaved human beings in their place. If you're gonna charge that much for a room, let your guests feel like they can exist without being a major burden to you. Like, what? Sorry.

There is a co-ed bunkhouse, separate mens and ladies composting toilet block and showers with solar hot water. No electricity otherwise. Each cabin also has a privy. Gas lanterns in the cabins. Everything is exceptionally clean and the AMC staff in the lodge provides 3 hearty family style meals a day included in the price of your booking. (sample dinner menu for one evening: home baked biscuits, Italian mixed green salad, roast pork with onion sauce and gravy, green beans, baked potatoes and sour cream, fruit cobbler for dessert, lemonade) The camp is surrounded by superbly marked trails snaking off into the mountains and the website gives good guidance on what to bring and what to expect. There are canoes and kayaks available for use but you must bring your own mountain bikes if you want to do any biking. There are board games in the lodge but you'll need to bring your own lanterns since the gas lamps in the cabins are not that bright. The website doesn't tell you how amazingly hospitable, approachable, and friendly the staff is. The access road is not paved but our little Kia handled it okay since the weather was perfect and we drove slowly. A 4x4 would be preferred.

We were hoping to enjoy a "Dark Sky" experience but was let down by mother nature both nights overcast and rainy skies. Overall, we made the best of it with board games in the Lodge, some canoeing and kayaking, and a small hike. If it wasn't so far of a drive from were we live, we would attempt to go back and try again to see the "Dark Sky".
