I grew up going to this store back when it was in a warehouse on 2nd Street. I recently moved back to the area after living in other states and have never found a shop that has as much variety and decent prices. I was glad to see it still operating twenty years after I left Corvallis. I'm not fond of being overly watched whilst shopping- which is why I give 4 stars. Had a truly bizarre experience with a sales person. I was getting some advice on beading supplies. I showed the sales person a cell phone picture of some of my beadwork and they were highly offended. It was a very normal necklace. The lady acted like I had ruined her day. Never going in there again. She said people show her their work all the time and she should not be subjected to such a thing. Pictures of beadwork? In a bead store? How outrageous! The store seems popular, but not everyone on staff is a people person. If you're going to be offended by pictures of beadwork, then go sell something else. With her personality, she would be great at selling bomb shelters, cemetery plots, dismemberment insurance any number of things come to mind. May pictures of ugly beadwork follow you all your days. read more

Northern Star has always had an interesting selection of crystals, clothing, cards, books, and jewelry. When I needed a new ring, Northern Star was my first stop. I lucked out, because Kenzie was there to help me. She identified my ring size, and then told me the price range of the three shelves of rings. I was impressed with Kenzie's knowledge - she easily identified each gemstone of the rings I expressed interest in. And she was wonderfully patient as I tried on and considered the possible choices. I was happy with the wide array of designs and gemstones, and glad of the price range from very affordable to moderate to expensive. Found beautiful rings that fit perfectly. Me and a buddy were visiting Corvallis yesterday while it's doing some window shopping in the downtown area the owner or whoever was managing the store came out barking at me and my buddy telling us to move along we're scaring people with our phone cameras and we weren't allowed to window shop then also denied access when we went inside the store and told to leave. I love supporting small local businesses but this is a store I would NOT SUPPORT. RUDE, Entitled, and out right unprofessional. Windows are meant for looking through, if you don't want eyes looking in, put up blinds. read more

Today I brought 2 of my out of town friends to Northern star. We are very compliant with the mask wearing policy in Corvallis. We were looking to buy some incense and do some shopping. Walking in we went directly to the back of the store where the incense was. My friend briefly pulled down her mask and smelled the incense package she was abruptly told to smell the incense through the mask. We were clearly isolated in the store nearly 20 feet from anyone around us. The moral of the story is ......you have paying customers coming in that are compliant and no one near you. Can't we all respect each other at least with a little common courtesy. read more

The workers here don't care about how you feel or what you want are just plain rude will not return.

I was walking down the street when this shop caught my eyes, so I went inside and was immediately greeted to a barrage of uncomfortable looks and gazes by the employees. After looking around I found that the only sizes they had in the store was 2XL + so I left. Then my mother called me on facetime and while talking I mentioned the store and was showing it to her on video. Then one of the employees come out and asks me to stop recording the store and move to a store that's closed even though I was on the public sidewalk and was within every legal right to record or do as I want on the public sidewalk. Not only are these people rude and make you feel uncomfortable, they seem to think they can take away your 1st Amendment right by filming or taking pictures or any establishment I want. An employee kicked me out because I took my phone out to text my Mom and she said she felt weird about me using my phone in public. I was in complete shock, I've never heard of anyone having a problem with a customer using their phone in public. read more

I was really disappointed with this store and how everything is organized inside it. You are not made to feel very welcome or if you "aren't a hippie" you don't belong. Came all the way down from Portland to check it out with my wife and needless to say between the rude staff and lacking product. It is not worth any sort of trek. read more

I was shopping here one time and all the workers started yelling and bitching at some kids outside taking a video?? Seemed like they were more concerned with them than their actual customers... the kids weren't bothering anyone or being out of line. But the staff kept going outside and antagonizing the kids filming. Making a big scene in front of customers for no reason. THE STAFF HERE ARE VERY RUDE, ACT ENTITLED AND ARE SCARED OF CAMERAS! This place was rotten to me and my two friends. We went in last week and my friend has a lung condition so she's unable to wear a mask. She has a card with her at all times. We were confronted about her not wearing a mask and when we showed the mask, they still asked us all to leave. My friend, still understanding, said she would wait outside so my other friend and I could shop. That still wasn't enough for these people. Where do I begin? I walked in to get some supplies because I'm starting a new hobby for 2023. When I was walking around in my baggy sweats. A lady wearing glasses and a mask came up to me and said "you need to pay for those items you stuffed in your pockets". First of all, my father is a preacher, I am a devoted Christian and stealing is a sin. I would never do that. I told her I'm unsure what she means. She continued to say "those items you're stealing". Ok I know I have some weight to lose for the new year, but I have a rare condition that doesn't allow me to workout like everyone else, but assuming that I'm shoplifting because my clothes are big on me and because I'm wandering around? I showed her all my pockets and she continued to follow me around. I feel so embarrassed. I feel like she was fat shaming me and so I just walked out. How awful to assume something like this with no proof. I'm completely shocked how this lady acted towards a potential new customer. read more

Northern Star is hardly Corvallis' "only hippie store" with Golden Crane nearby, along with Grass Roots Book&Music. Northern Star has plenty of beading supplies, smells of incense, plenty of crystals, you name it. It feels like a little bit of Eugene in an otherwise "town and gown" kind of place. The clothing selection has plenty of variety. The people are friendly, there's always something interesting. If you need to pack up some patchouli, this is the shop to go. read more

Now, perhaps I'm a bit biased because my girlfriend works for Northern Star, but it's really hard to beat the store that offers everything under the sun. Honestly, I don't like the fact that my girlfriend works there because now I can't get her anything for her birthday from NS. While I'm learning more and more how to use my artistic side I find the knowledge of the staff at Northern Star beyond useful. Cindy, the store manager, is great at explaining how to do even the simplest tasks to a novice like me while coaching up those that happened to be more advanced. You couple that with the price being right for all the different knick-knacks as well as the ridiculously fair prices on the beads then you are looking at a great store. But, they take it one step further at Northern Star. They fix your broken chains and string your beads for you for free or for a VERY inexpensive price. I'd take them up on it too because all the ladies there are very very very talented. read more

Antoinette at Northern Star rescued my favorite necklace on the spot the night before was to leave on a business trip. I'm so happy and grateful for her expertise. While she basically figured out how to secure my stone with knots and a bead application, I marveled at the shop's impressive selection of affordably priced, fine semi-precious & gemstone jewelry-- and artisan jewelry supplies for those more nimble-fingered than I. Definitely not art supplies. But if you want malas(sp), tapestries, beads, inscents, curios...this is the place. They also do custom work.

I called to ask if they had cone incense, and I believe I spoke to Emily. I'm not great at remembering names, but she was so helpful and even went to check the store's stock for the scents I was looking for. When I got there, she showed me the vast incense selection, with boxes of cone incense for only $1.25 each! They all smell wonderful. The store is very colorful, fun, and has extremely reasonable prices. I will definitely come back the next time I'm in Oregon! read more

I love this place! I've been here 3 times now and every time I go in, I always find something new to take home! The people who work here are super nice and really helpful as well as patient. I got some feather extensions and the nice lady Emily was willing to put them in my hair for me too!!! :D They have a great selection of beads and incense. If you're into faeries and dragons, this place has a lot of those as well. There's a lot of interesting things at Northern Star. This place is great. Must visit. This has been my favorite store in Corvallis for a decade plus, now! It's filled with all sorts of fun things and smells of good incense. This place is fab for beads and jewelery making stuff! They also have a ton of other great stuff! I'm a huge fan of their body jewelry selection and prices, both are phenomenal. They carry alot of Hippie type stuff, but there's a little bit of everything when it comes to decor and neat little items. There is also a decent little area with clothing and other items in the back of the store. If you're really into a place that's "different" this is a good one to go to. I've tried to have them order things for me before (when they didn't have a particular bead in the size I was looking for) and they've never called me back. read more

I've always loved the selection of beads at the store - and the service has been wonderful, but my recent visit really inspired me to sign up for a yelp account just so I could share my positive experience. Came in looking for a very specific bead - and when a staff member led me to a close match (impressive how quickly she was able to lead me to this particular bead), I asked for advice on how to paint it another color. She gave me a suggestion, and then offered to test it on the bead for me. I ended up walking away from the store with exactly what I was hoping to find. They really care about their customers, and remind you why we should shop local! read more
