Matt's calvacade of comics is one of those diamonds in the rough, it's not a store to bypass when you're in the area, I've been buying from Matt's since I was 16yr old and still return all the way from lebanon knowing everytime I'll get a fair trade, value, or purchase EVERY TIME.. ya the store has a little clutter no big deal when you have something for everyone.. Made a trip from Junction City to Corvallis just to check this place out. First time in there and I am not at all sure what some of the reviewers are talking about when it comes to this establishment. Looking from the outside, I wouldn't think there would be here. The front is rather unassuming. However, the store is pretty deep. Yes, it is very cluttered. They have more merchandise than they have room for, plus I was told they have an extensive warehouse where they keep additional comics that they use for replenishing. When you buy a comic, they take a picture of it to send to someone in the warehouse so it can be replaced. They can also have the warehouse personnel look at the additional stock if you don't find the comics you are shooting for. I haven't tested this yet, but I took a card and was told to send an e-mail with my list and they will look into it for me. I'm going to send them a list soon. My friends and I were immediately greeted and asked if we needed help finding anything. It really isn't that difficult to find things in my opinion. The employees were moving things around the numerous comic boxes they had. So occasionally I had to move merchandise over so I could look at the next box. Not that big of a deal in my opinion. They have a huge selection of board/adventure games, figures, comics, pokemon/magic cards, and other collectibles. Now let's look at the comics again. They aren't unreasonably priced. Yes, some older Hulk issues where he fights a bunch of nobodies are $3-$4 each. To me, unless it is important to the character development, I don't want to pay that much. I did find a bunch of Dr. Strange that I didn't have for $1.00-$2.50. I can live with that. A buddy visiting from Idaho found bought a bunch of comics that he can find in Idaho -- for about twice the price over there. Seeing the great pricing, he jumped all over a lot of them, especially Teen Titans that he just started collecting, many of which were under a dollar each. It would take a considerable amount of time to really look through everything they have. It is just too much to take in at one time, even though we spent 40+ minutes looking around. The clutter does make it kind of cumbersome to get to comic boxes at times, but it really isn't hard to work around. The employees greeted everyone that I saw walk in the door immediately. They also checked on us a few times to ensure we were finding what we were looking for. They were friendly and helpful in my opinion. I will absolutely be back again and I intend to look into sending them a list of my hard to find issues to see what they come up with. If I get a quick response -- either yay or nay -- I'll consider bumping up my score to 5/5. read more

Not only is it the closest collectable store near me. Its the best. Hands down. I have been a collector for quite some years and I have also been to a ton of stores. The staff is extremely helpful and patient, large variety of product ( pokemon cards can be scarce at times but thats everywhere ), and it's just a very down to earth environment that gives you the comfort of finding exactly what you want. Matt's pretty much a comic book institution in Corvallis. Not only does the store have a huge selection of books and graphic novels, there are all sorts of games, collectibles, manuals, a large selection of Dungeons & Dragons materials, apparel, posters, and hard to find items. It's a lot of fun just to go in and browse through the massive amount of merchandise, find your hidden gems, and visit with the store kitty cat. read more

My 8 year old son says that this store is great because of the selection of Pokémon cards, board games and Magic cards. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, and have given good advice on games that our family can enjoy together. read more

It's a throwback to the pre X-men movies comic book stores. It looks cluttered because they make sure to try and take in quality games, comics, cards, toys, into a very tiny space. If they don't have it they can get it. They offer great advice. A couple of things I've read in here that should be refuted: 1-Safety of the area: I don't know how one could find a "rough" neighborhood in North Corvallis. 2-Cluttered: Yes. Yes it is. Like any comic book store that is worth it's salt, it is packed to the gills. Sure some places have 8000 sq ft. and can afford it, but comic shops ain't exactly known for being highly profitable ventures. 3- Service..... I don't know how one experiences shitty service here. Wow! Not to throw shade on the previous reviewers, but I had a very different experience than they did. I'm thinking they read the less than positive review about not being a helpful staff because I was met by the opposite. They were attentive, helpful, engaging and knowledgeable. There were at least 4 people working there on the Saturday morning I stopped in. Was it cluttered? Yes. Was it a mess? No. Did the staff know what they had and have a method to the way things were stocked and could they find it if you asked? Yes I like comic books, and I like Funko Pops, they had those. Do they have more table top, board and card games than comics? Maybe. They have a lot of stock and in the conversation I could overhear they have a lot of knowledge and experience with your card based gaming lifestyle. Check them out, the neighborhood is not shady, they're up the street from a school. read more

More of a mess than a cavalcade. I was able to find a rare comic book in which the hero battles the Book Worm, but other than that, it's one of those "go there once" places. The service is OK; it's family-run. The collectibles, comic books, are randomly dumped around like an episode of Hoarders. The place is messy&dusty. Matt's is in a questionable neighborhood, surrounded by shabby, shady businesses. There's plenty of street parking, but one doesn't feel safe. The place could use some serious cleaning&renovation. It looks like the 1993 quake hit it&that it never recovered. The service is meh, sometimes friendly, sometimes not. This place looks like it's been through the Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, when it needs a Dawn of Justice. read more

I've been here twice. On the first visit I was looking for a board game. I went in with my kids and was duly ignored. After about 10 minutes I asked for a recommendation and was met with much chagrin. We wound up buying a game that was recommended to us that, perhaps, wasn't so stellar. Fast forward six months and we return. Similar situation, we were ignored for ten plus minutes while a pile of cash was burning a hole in my pocket. Two employees, both 10 feet away, never acknowledged my prescence. Never asked what I was looking for. Never said or did anything. I was willing to drop good coin on a game but I'd like some basic level of customer service. We left without buying anything even though I wanted a new game. Bad service is typical in these comic shops; "Matt's" really ups the ante though. I'll go to Pegasus around the corner or visit Ye Olde Amazon.com Shoppe in the future. You gotta shell out a premium for games at local places, and I have no problem supporting them when their service is half-decent. Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons has better customer service than Matt's. I haven't even mentioned the lack of organization, the filth, horrendous parking, the high prices, etc. Matt's is a disaster and is the epitome of what's wrong with gaming culture. Matt's is an acquired taste. Its definitely messy and hard to find things. I have defaulted to to asking the staff and they have always been helpful and pleasant. I'm more into D&D and Board games and they have a decent selection of games and better yet, used games, that I can check out. Its worth a visit, but I would understand if its not your style. read more

Very reasonably priced, found some deck boxes that I wanted for $2 less than at Top deck. Very down to earth, when I went here, there was a friendly cat and a baby. Didn't mind the "mess" too much. One of the best collections of Doctor Who items that I have seen so far in a shop. read more

I've been collecting comics since 1986. So, I'm mostly looking for pre-1986 comics. Matt has a great selection of comics from Silver Age to present. I always check out comic shops wherever I travel, and Matt's is one of the best. My main criteria is selection and price. Yes, I can find any comic on Ebay for cheaper, but half the time they never show up. So, I prefer shopping in person. I can hold it in my hand and closely scrutinize the condition. Matt's has a good selection of Silver in VG/fine condition, so they are good for collecting or reading, but not usually investment grade. They have more stuff than room, so it is like a treasure hunt. If you need a clean shop, don't come here - it is FULL of cool stuff. They also have a lot of games and MTG, but I'd say the main reason to come to this comic shop is for comics. read more

Been going to Matt's for about 5 years now. They have it all. Comics, board games, toys, table top games, dice, pops. A huge back room for learning and playing games. Matt and the other staff are always so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Great place to meet new people too, ive met some new friends playing Magic the Gathering and Heroclix. So I moved here 2-years ago and decided to give matts another shot. When he has older books in and you catch him at the right time you can def score some good stuff and decent deals but it's all timing. New release is hit or miss and most stuff tends to go to staff or pull list so that is timing as well. Still messy with stuff every where but I've just gotten used to moving boxes if I need to. Older books you need to ask about seeing them. The store is def magic the gathering focused with other board/card games and pops if you're looking for that. With the next closest store 30 minutes away this is the best choice in town. Just take a minute to get past the clutter and things will start to make sense. read more

I enjoy going here. The staff are very friendly, and there always seems like there's so much to check out. Like others have said, the shop is pretty cluttered, but luckily with the Matt Cave opening up over in Albany, we'll see some of this go away. I go in here looking for board games mainly, and sometimes I wish their selection was a little bit better. It's not that they don't have games I don't want as much as they have games I already have, so maybe this is partially my fault. However, they do welcome trade-ins, which is a really nice feature of the store. Obviously you're not going to get top dollar for your stuff, but it saves me the trouble of trying to sell something online. Price-wise, they're stuff is a little above what I usually like to pay. I don't mind helping out the shop a little bit, but going online is usually cheaper, even with shipping factored in. read more

Decent board game store. I am not big into comics or collectibles, so loss of stars there. Seems a little messy with all the different items they have on display. Often hard to see what they actually do have, but that's pretty typical of a store like this. Staff was not overly friendly. They were more concerned with things behind the counter than engaging with customers. I do appreciate they have sleeves in stock as you can't seem to get very many different sizes at a typical store anymore. read more

The place is a mess; piles of stuff everywhere. There are cats wandering and climbing all over the place and on the merchandise. Today, I went into the store and there was a stack of t-shirts with cat hair all over them. To top it all off there was a pile of cat vomit on the shirts and the top of some back issues. I go in there occasionally to look for comics, but I'm done with the place. It just grosses me out. read more

While in Corvallis i have visited Matt's a few times. They do allow trades for old comic books and comic book memorabilia. While you may not get the absolute top dollar, they do give you more for in store credit which allows you to trade comics and what not for some of the new stuff. The store is slightly crowded, but i've seen much worse. I was able to buy my girlfriend ,who is a huge marvel fan, a memorabilia present that she actually enjoys, and that i found for quite a few dollars less than i had seen anywhere else. The store almost seems to not have enough staff at times, but i blame the economy for that. If you are looking for games and comics, then Matt's is guaranteed to have it. I would highly recommend and to look past some of the disorganization in favor of the quality of the merchandise. read more
