Dr Frank and Vanessa are so caring, thorough and knowledgeable. My girl has been coming here for years even though she's only been seen a few times we wouldn't go anywhere else. Dr Frank explains more than enough about the diagnosis, treatment and expectations. The pets are lucky as most human physicians do not spend that much time or explain that much about findings and conditions. I am a nurse and was able to understand but a layperson may not get all the detailed info just because of medical jargon. They are good at following up with you either via phone or email. I am really liking my pet's knew vet! Kristen at the front desk is a sweetheart. The vet tech is knowledgeable, friendly and also very kind. Dr. Frank spent an extensive amount of time explaining things about my pet and how to care for him. He also advised against certain products on the market that are not FDA approved or contain ingredients harmful to a pet, but not listed in the ingredients. He has decades of experience. We discussed diet, allergies, heart worm hotspots, and preventative treatment options. We are on the same page as far as preventative measures, and treatment. The prices are very reasonable, as well...charging half for neutering what other vet wanted to charge. HUGE plus...and closer to home! She is cold and was seemingly not interested in conveying information that would have made our conversation go a lot smoother. I had to get it second hand from Midtown technicians (who were lovely). While my trip to Midtown Animal Hospital was going to be temporary until I bought a car, I've decided to stick with them. My first yelp... I'm going to compare Dr. Frank with our previous VCA clinic vet. Took my newly adopted dog to his free vet visit at the VCA. The vet from the VCA clinic checked him out and the assistant came back with a $300 estimate. This included a blood test, fecal test, a lepto vaccine and heart guard for 6 months. Took the same dog to Dr Frank. I left paying under $60. This included physical exam and fecal test. I didn't need blood work- from the same paperwork the VCA looked at regarding the dogs history- Dr Frank found info that stated the SPCA already tested the dogs blood and it showed he was negative. As for heart guard- Dr Frank had a sample- so he gave it to my dog for free. Dr Frank said not to give the lepto vaccine because it was unnecessary due to my lifestyle (lepto is something dogs catch from wild animals urine- ie: camping,hiking). I was in the office for an hour and a half. Why did it take so long? Because Dr Frank is thorough. He taught me a few tricks with how to remove plaque from teeth to save me money so that I won't have to take my dog in for a $170 dental cleaning. He taught me how to clean ears and clip nails, which brush, shampoo and so much more. At the VCA clinic I saw and spoke mostly with the 'vet assistant' then after being checked out, the vet came in. At the northgate pet hospital, it's only Dr Frank no middleman :) Other than that, the place was clean and the receptionist was pleasant. read more

We initially came here because he was the cheapest in the area for putting your animal down... we walked in and we're helped almost immediately by Vanessa, who was courteous to our needs and emotional state. Dr. Frank conducted a final check up for our cat, and was able to diagnose a problem that 3 other vets before him had not even bothered to try without expensive chemical testing. He took the time to accurately diagnose our cat, provide VERY AFFORDABLE care/surgery, and even kept the option open to put our cat down if he was wrong. The man knows what he is doing. First of all i give 0 star to Dr Frank because of the permanent damage he has caused my dog mentally & physically. On august 09 we checked my dog Princess to get her teeth cleaning done which took 11hours and princess came back with 3rd degree burn. Half of her body is completely burned from the heating pad the vet used to keep her warm, it Caused from pressure, heat & not changing her position. She was left on a heating pad to burn alive. This is absolute animal abuse & Malpractice. Dr frank didn't wanted to work with me so i was left with $$$ medical bill & cost of her creams, medication etc. My dog didn't deserve to go through all this pain that happened BECAUSE OF HIS MISTAKEEE I REPEAT HIS MISTAKE, which apparently he is blaming its an infection. I took her to specialist dermatologist of animal and the result came back as "Thermal Burn". As a good honest person i wanted to work things out with him & left him atleast pay his medical bill & refund my money back but he left me no choice. Here i am writing this to inform you guys Please Please save your money and protect your fur baby from him. I WANT JUSTICE FOR PRINCESS. When my family and I moved to the Natomas area, we had to find a new veterinarian for our (then) 4 dogs. After trying a different veterinarian, we decided to give Northgate Pet Hospital a try. My husband took two of our dogs (a GSD and GSD mix) to the very first appointment. The appointment took over FOUR hours, just for the exam...no bloodwork, no vaccines, no tests that would require additional time. While I don't doubt that Dr. Frank was thorough, 4 hours is way too long for a well-check on 2 dogs. One of my dogs suffers from bilateral hip dysplasia and an arthritic hind right knee, and is on NSAIDS indefinitely for her discomfort. As a result, she has to have blood work-up done every 6 months to continue her prescription. We were quoted $85-95 for said bloodwork. Fortunately, I am employed in a laboratory that performs veterinary chemistries/hematology, and so I called and asked if I could have the blood run at my work, and then bring the results to the appointment to save a little $$$. Then, all of a sudden, they wanted thyroid levels run on my dog, too. And a CBC. And a urinalysis. The quote became over $170. I got the distinct impression that they were trying to make things difficult for me, hoping that I would throw my hands up in the air and finally consent to have the work-up done through them, but of course I can't say for sure. I'm not a veterinarian, but the degree of bloodwork they were suddenly asking for was akin to what you would run on an elderly animal about to undergo anesthesia, not a dog continuing a Rimadyl prescription. Anyhow, just got a bad vibe from the place, personally. read more

Not impressed. My daughter and I took our 10 year old male dachshund there for a tumor in the perianal area, and requested a biopsy. I'm a human medical doctor, and had already treated him with a course of antibiotics and an attempt at incision and drainage under local anesthesia, which yielded no pus. It was clear that this wasn't an infection or abscess. Instead of doing a biopsy, Dr. Frank gave me a lectures on totally unrelated issues like ear care, heart murmurs, nutrition etc.. My dog then endured a painful rectal exam (for which I was charged an extra $ 22). Dr. Frank then diagnosed "abscess" and sold me a round of super-expensive antibiotics (I could have obtained an equivalent antibiotic for a fraction of the cost at Walmart). I emailed him 2 weeks later that the tumor hadn't responded (as expected), asking for a fine needle biopsy. Dr, Frank never responded. I eventually took my dog to another vet who listened to me. A biopsy was done the same day. Diagnoses: Perianal adenoma - a benign tumor that is testosterone dependent and responds to castration. My impression of Dr. Frank is unfavorable. read more

I have used a couple of other vets in the Natomas area, and when I needed to have my dog neutered, the price seemed awfully high. A friend told me about NPH and I called. The price was $130 less, and the service was wonderful. They stayed until 7pm because my dog was still groggy from the anesthetic, and they didn't want to send him home that way. My dog was afraid of the cone, so Dr. Frank took it off, and told me to put Campho-Phenique around the wound as dogs don't like the smell. It worked very well. Several months later, because my dog is so naturally fearful, they actually gave him his rabies shot in the parking lot, because my dog didn't want to go inside. Their prices are very inexpensive compared to the other vets in the area, and Dr. Frank is very caring and knowledgeable. The receptionist he has now is wonderful, so I'm assuming she's different than ones he may have had in the past. I highly recommend NPH. read more

Let me first start by saying we've used Dr. Frank as our vet for the last several years. Luckily our animals are very healthy and have just needed routine exams and vaccinations. I've had dogs, horses and other pets my entire life so I consider myself well versed in basic veterinary care. Most recently, I had a very unfortunate and bad experience with this particular vet, which included lack of punctuality, lack of professionalism, lack of compassion, and very poor bedside manner! I brought my 2.5 year old dog in for what appeared to be an anal gland issue. For starters, I had a 7am appointment, to which I arrived to early even though I knew I'd be their first appointment. The first staff member, a vet tech, didn't arrive until 7:02am and proceeded to drink her coffee, smoke her cigarette, and evidently finish getting ready in her car. Not the greatest impression. Next, the receptionist arrived at 7:12am followed directly by the actual vet, Dr. Frank, who apparently is the only one capable of unlocking and opening the building. If you own and operate a business, arriving late is unacceptable. Every single staff member including the doctor was late!!! Once in the exam room, I gave the vet tech the run down of the situation which was the sudden pop-up of anal swelling 2 days prior with no prior symptoms. Afterwards, Dr. Frank came in, asked several questions and proceeded visually examining my dog and mildly palpate the exterior of the anus, no actual rectal exam given at this time. Almost, immediately and in a very dry, non-compassionate fashion, Dr. Frank explains that he thinks we may be looking at a tumor due the positioning of the swelling and the "mass." He proceeds to explain the treatment of the "tumor" and depending on the size of it, included the removal of my dog's anus, part of his rectum, his tail, and part of his hip, plus possible chemo-radiation! At this point I'm in tears, completely taken aback by this potential diagnosis. Dr. Frank still wanted to initially treat it like an anal gland problem but had already jumped to a tumor...absolutely frightening! This is my baby we're talking about!! Trying to trust the "expert" in front of me, I agreed to scheduled my dog to undergo an anesthetized procedure for 2 days later to make sure it was just an anal gland, and if not an anal gland to possibly biopsy the "mass." Meanwhile they sent me and my dog home, offering no pain relief or course of antibiotics or any form of treatment to the pup. I had to prompt them and ask for any sort of pain management for him when it was clear that he was in an immense amount of pain and was to wait 2 more days for relief. After discussing the situation with my spouse, who was also shocked, saddened and angered by the prospect of our fur-baby having a tumor, we opted to get a second opinion from another vet who came highly recommended by a dear friend. They worked to get us in the very next day. This vet thoroughly examined our dog via rectal exam and told us with confidence that it was just an anal gland abscess! Needless to say, our pup got some initial treatment that day, she started him on antibiotics, and scheduled him for a later date to complete the rest of the treatment once the swelling was decreased. Phew! No jumping to conclusions, immediate treatment, no random tumor diagnosis, prompt service, very compassionate, and very reasonably priced. Our pup is now back to his normal self and on a strong road to recovery. I was highly dissatisfied with how Dr. Frank jumped so quickly to a rather serious possible diagnosis without even thoroughly examining my dog and I was highly dissatisfied with him and his entire staff arriving late! I will NEVER recommend a single person to this office and he has permanently lost us as a patient. read more

Dr. Frank is a very caring vet. I appreciate his care of our animals over the last 8 years. He is very thorough and learns all the pet families names. He does talk a bit, I don't think he lectures at all, just wants to make sure the message is received. Plus, he is about the best priced facility if you do not have pet insurance. I recommend him emphatically. Granted, his receptionists have not been the best - however, it is the extra care he provides that I appreciate. He takes the time to explain clearly and in layman's terms what's going on with your pet, to give you options for the best care, will guarantee pricing for future recommended care, and will even share with you recommendations for where to take your dog along on a snowshoeing adventure (plus give you suggestions for how to keep your dog safe on the journey). I highly recommend Northgate Pet Hospital. Perhaps the only drawback (simultaneously an enormous benefit) is that Dr. Frank does not have a Vet Tech, so does all the exams, shots, etc himself. read more

I did a lot of research online, particularly Yelp, to find a good vet for my 3 lb Chihuahua. I am new to the Sacramento area and needed to have her teeth checked out because I know if you don't, they can really have problems in the future with losing them. Also, since my pup will have to go under for the procedure, I wanted to be able to trust the doctor completely! I found Dr. Frank and I can honestly say that he is the most thorough vet I have ever been to. He took care of my dog and checked everything about her down to every aspect. Most vets just do the bare minimum of care and questions, rarely delving deeper into what is going on with your dog... he didn't just address what I was there for, her teeth, he wanted to make sure her overall health was addressed. He truly cared about her well being. And, not only were his prices VERY reasonable - re-checks were no charge at all and hiis dental care prices were less than half any other vet I've heard of on the internet. He is careful and caring and doesn't add up unnecessary charges but made sure my dog was taken care of completely. Even the time I was running late and he was pressed for time, Dr. Frank went through every detail with me in a very caring way. I would give him more than 5 stars if I could. When I first went to Northgate Vet I loved it. Dr. Frank was thorough, explained everything clearly and, more importantly, he got the job done! I recommended him to my uncle who was also very impressed with him. My mom decided to take her 13 year old staffy mix to see Dr. Frank about her recurring skin problems and I went with her. I was so embarrassed and outraged by the way Dr. Frank treated my mother! Every time she tried to ask a question or explain something about what has been going on with the dog he would cut her off saying she was wrong. Several times he made extremely rude comments blatantly suggesting that my mother's house was filthy. A few of his comments to her: "If you kept your house, carpets and dogs clean you wouldn't need to use febreez, it's like putting on perfume when what you really need is a bath." He also told her, "The once or twice a year you vacuum and shampoo your carpets, don't use carpet shampoo. They should be steam cleaned." As well as, "You should probably borrow a vacuum cleaner every once in a while and vacuum the house really well and then have professionals come and steam clean the carpet." Those were just a few of his comments to my mother... who, by the way, is NOT a dirty person. I could understand those comments had we walked into the vet's office filthy and unbathed, looking and smelling like we lived on the streets.. but that is not the case. These rude comments started when my mother refused an expensive and unnecessary fungus test. I explained to him that the dog has had the same recurring skin problem for over 7 years and that we have been to many vets and spent a lot of money on tests and have never gotten an answer as to why it happens. I also explained that anti fungals have never worked and that the only thing that clears her skin up when she has an "outbreak" has been antibiotics. (Antibiotics have no affect on fungi) He proceeded to insist we needed the fungus test anyway and when we refused again he ended the office visit saying that we had taken up too much of his time and now he was a half hour late for his next appointment. He even refused to trim the dogs nails and give her a rabies shot, which were two of the three reasons we scheduled the appointment. Needless to say, my family will be returning to Bradshaw Vet... They are a little pricey but at least we aren't going to be insulted just to save a few bucks. read more

I am 58 and have been dealing with Vets for MANY years. About 2 months ago I went to Dr. Frank and Justine. I can't sing their praises enough. They are thorough, explain EVERYTHING and follow-up on my pets. My "boys" as I call them are my children and I would do anything for them. The caring and sincere nature of Dr. Frank and Justine is above and beyond ALL the Vets that I have ever gone to. I will continue to take my current pets there (one is 13 and the other 19) and plan on taking future pets there as well. I just hope they never move...when you get the very best you want to keep it. Don't be fooled by first appearances. This clinic isn't flashy (though it is very clean), one of the receptionists can be a little cold, and Dr. Frank can tend to be a little overly thorough in conveying his observations, but you can bank on getting unsurpassed care for your pet at a very reasonable cost. We left another Natomas clinic after it became part of a national chain and at each visit we were seeing a new Doctor. We were referred to NPH by a friend and Dr. Frank has taken exceptional care of our three dogs in the years we've gone to him. He has worked with us to combine services and allowed more than one pet per visit to reduce costs. When our Chow Chow had an issue with his mouth last November, Dr. Frank knew right away it was serious, though he wasn't alarmist, and provided us several courses of action. He could have ordered a whole bunch of expensive tests that would have confirmed what he saw on the x-ray and in the biopsy of a small lump, but it wouldn't have changed the fact that our dog had bone cancer in the jaw that had almost certainly spread. Dr. Frank could have prescribed all sorts of heroic measures and likely prolonged our dog's suffering for a few weeks, but instead showed immense compassion for all of us and made saying goodbye to our dear friend more comfortable than we could have imagined. Dr. Frank cares a great deal for his patients, as well as their human companions. We highly recommend Natomas Pet Hospital! read more

Ok, so anyone who has anything bad to say about Frank and his costs, is automatically ignorant. Frank is the best Vet I know! He is ALWAYS helpful and ALWAYS takes time to help you understand and answer any questions you may have. He may not have the best people skills at times, lol (and his receptionists kind of suck), but hey, they aren't our doctors. And anyone who says he takes WAY to long, well that's on them. From my experience, he is the most thorough Vet and constantly asks if you have any questions. So if you want him to do a quick and careless job and not help you understand, then don't go here. I trust him 100%. He does not low ball you in ANY way and always gives the best advice that he can. And with costs, wow. This man is straight forward with you and he will tell you his honest opinion if it is worth it or necessary. I brag about him to everyone and they say their Vet isn't as good. I will ALWAYS bring every dog I own to him. And one more thing, he told me one time he used to help stray dogs, but it ended being too much and can no longer so it. My dog has a knee issue and Frank told me that he himself has the same problem and refuses to do surgery anytime soon because it would take him away from his clients. How dedicated and awesome is he? If you think about it, it's also sad. So to ANYONE who talks crap, they are those types that are selfish, like to complain and expect everything to work in their favor. Frank you are awesome, I hope you don't listen to those people. I am VERY greatful you are my dog's Vet. Keep up the amazing work :) read more
