I can't say enough about our great experience at Northland Outfitters. Our party of 4 were a week away from a long-anticipated canoe trip in the Boundary Waters when wildfires closed the entire park. We were scrambling for a backup plan when we found Northland in Michigan's magnificant Upper Peninsula. With the barest sketch of a plan we called the folks at Northland. They put us up in a bunkhouse, helped us plot routes for multi-day canoe trips, offered fishing advice, provided livery service and generally saved our vacation. Their campground along the banks of the Manistique river is beautiful--see the amazing Thomas Dambo sculpture, Benny the Beard Fisher Troll--and the owners and staff amazingly friendly and kind. --Robert B. read more

the service was nice a super nice lady by front desk with two large dogs but sleeping so they won't harm you and bernadoodles. nice short walk to the troll and a phone stand so it's super easy to get water and whole troll in the pic. if you do go don't get any squishy toy, bad quality mine popped already and barely touched it read more

This was great fun. Benny the Troll has unending personality and charm. The detail on his fingers, toenails and face are quite remarkable. Just a short walk from parking lot. First stop in shop to pay the $10 fee per person. Totally worth it. Beautiful surroundings, water sports, cabins, and nice gift shop. read more

Stayed here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend and absolutely loved it. We stayed here for about six nights in the deluxe cabin and it was a great place. Our cabin had its own bathroom which was great rather than using the bathhouse bathrooms (even those weren't bad and looked nice inside). We went sightseeing throughout the UP from here and went kayaking on the river through Northland where they'll drop you off then you kayak back to the site. The shop was also really nice inside and had some neat stuff. The campground itself was small but quaint, no one was noisy or annoying while we were there. Benny (the wooden sculpture) was fun to take pictures with too. Sad the old owners have left and sold it recently but am hopeful nothing major changes about it. We definitely plan on coming back in the future if it stays the same or is even better! read more

We reserved a canoe for the 4 hour trip through the Seney NWR. Northland Outfitters had our canoe set up and ready to launch on schedule. Before we left, the person at the counter told us about a few particular hazards to watch for and how to get around them. They float that stretch occasionally themselves and cut openings around log jams when needed. And there were plenty of logs and rocks to navigate around on that trip, but nothing that our modest paddling skills couldn't handle. It was a beautiful, quiet afternoon float--quite a contrast from some crowded rivers downstate. We finished the trip a little early, but our shuttle driver was at the take-out waiting for us. NO has a nice gift shop, and we got a couple of t-shirts with some cool logos. We took a walk around the grounds too and it looked like a promising place to camp next time we're around these parts. Of course, we had to check out the troll sculpture (see photos), as you must if you come here for a paddle. read more

Absolutely love everything about this place. Camping, kayaking, Benny, and even their shop rules. I have been camping at their sites twice, but I end up using their portage service for kayaking as often as I can in the summer season. Camping here is such a wonderful experience. I'm usually a rustic and private campsite person but they definitely break the mold here. I have never had an issue with campsite neighbors, everyone is respectful and the staff really encourages everyone to be chill. The staff here is really what makes this place shine. Everyone clearly loves what they do and are always willing to go above and beyond. If you're looking for some outdoor adventures, fun in the water, unique gear and gifts, and a firsthand look at some incredible art (Benny the troll), look no further. As of May 2022, Northland Outfitters is under new ownership and management. The new couple bought the place almost three weeks ago. They have already started updating the place and have big plans for the cabins on property. The gift shop is cute with new merchandise coming in and needing to be hung up. Great assortment of items for men, women, and children. We rented kayaks for a 4-hour float. We launched from their location and a guy came to pick us up. He was early and we were on time. The float was fabulous! Today is May 23 and Spring is still just starting. The water level is high, but not as high as a month ago. The water is moving at about 7 mph and will slow as the water level decreases during the Spring and Summer. Numerous trees have fallen into the river. If you're new to kayaking, a 2-hour float will avoid the biggest obstacles. Experienced kayakers will enjoy the winding river and its natural obstacle course. read more

We loved our campsite overlooking the river. The campground is very pretty with trees and a central pond with fountains. There's a fairly new bath house with showers that's kept clean daily. We took one of the boat trips 2 1/2 hours and our guy dropped us off upriver right on time. We were given a good explanation of the hazards along the route and we ended at the outfitters property right at the estimated time also. The owners are very friendly and helpful. All of the staff was extremely friendly and they have the place looking. They have made improvements lately. If you're looking for a place to spend a week or day, I wouldn't miss it. read more

Visited to see the T Dambo troll sculpture ( which was amazing) and walked around the campsite. Wonderful sites and cabins. Everything was clean, spacious and well done. The camp store was nicely stocked. Great staff who were attentive, helpful friendly. The kayak and canoe livery looked great. If you're looking for a float or a nice to stay- Do Not miss this spot! This place is a hidden gem! Absolutely beautiful campground, quiet and cozy. when we checked in the owners were extremely accommodating. We had our site pre-booked, and they even let us choose between all the open sites which one we wanted upon arrival! We did a road trip from the lower peninsula and mentioned that we had been sleeping in the car. To top it off, the owners gave us our own tent, cots, and latter ball set for our site to be more comfortable for the night. The bathrooms are clean, spacious showers and there's a cute little trail leading to an awesome sculpture. Large sites, So much to do here and the owners are extremely accommodating and friendly. I wish we could stay longer. read more

Wow!!! This place is absolutely amazing with a wonderful family running this! They had everything and more that we needed. The campsite and cabins were very clean. Bathrooms and showers were cleaned daily. This was a perfect place to stay for the week with our family! We will definitely be back! read more

Went on a kayaking trip thru Northland Outfitters with 5 of my buddies. A large tree fell in our path, swept away our things, and had us stranded in the wilderness. With DNR and state police on foot, Dan from Northland came out on a Kayak to rescue us. He guided the remaining kayaks to safety while the rest of our group continued on foot. He even brought along music to calm down the vibe. Once we made it back safe, Dan was even able to recover our lost gear in the dark. He's quite a river monster - should consider doing guided tours around the area. These guys know what they're doing! read more

Only visited for a kayak trip on the Manistique river with my wife and two young children. Trip was great. Kayaking equipment was all nice and the person we worked with was very friendly. Turned out to be a great first kayaking trip for the kids. read more
