Trying to cancel North Star Service for months. Sent in a signed Notice of cancellation. They say they never received it. Now we are being charged a monthly charge for the next 5 years. In further conversation they are trying to get us to reinstall at a lower rate and reduced period of time or pay $2707. We just want out as we requested with a signed document mailed within 12 hours of signing the contract. read more

Horrible experiences throughout! Shoddy installation, multiple service calls, only problem is the service contractor always wanted to come out after 8:00 pm.... &..... they wanted to charge me $75 per visit to repair their shoddy installations. Trying to finally discontinue the agreement, of course...finel print. 18 month automatic renewal contracts unless they receive "written" notification 60 days prior to the conclusion of the original terms. What?????? When I spoke with them last year about discontinuing, no mention made. My 5 year contract ended in August, the Northstar Home Security system does not work now in November and hasn't for months. When I called to cancel, they told me I would have to pay for another 18 months because of the automatic renewal. When I said I did not authorize a renewal on a system that does not work, they said I still had to pay for another 60 days until the cancellation notice was processed. Do not get involved with Northstar! You will spend hours on hold and not get any help. They are a ripoff. read more

Technical issues with equipment, camera firmware updating for several days. In that time my car was broken into under faulty camera. Northstar tech support manager said it was my responsibility to monitor and troubleshoot cameras several times daily and took no responsibility for Northstar shoddy equipment leaving me wide open to theft. Poor poor customer service. I intend to buy out of my contract and get some real security for my family. After I do I will tell every home owner I know to avoid Northstar! read more

If I could give a negative star I would. Got the service on a 42 month contract in which I erroneously assumed Id actually h ave serv ice for 42 months. The camera door bell worked for about a year. The it stopped. After 4 25 minute tech support phonen calls they sent me a internet booster. When that didnt work they sent e a new door bell that I was focred to install myself bc there is NO REPAIR when the qequipemtn fails. When it didnt work either they said I should call an electrician (my new Ring door bell works great so it is not my electrical sysgtem) . Then the alarm itself started going off randomly even when it isnt armed. Called tech support numerous times but they were unable to make any improvement so I unplugged gthe system bc I was tired of being awakened in the middle of the night by fasle alarms. But even though NONE OF THE SYSTEM WORKS and no one is avaiable to repair it I am stuck paying the rest of the contract for the next 8 months.. TOTAL RIP OFF! read more

We had two of the reps show up yesterday. One the " intern" one was the "trainer". Reminded me of a tag team. Took up a few hours of my lazy Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed the " we are here because you were chosen to be one of our test market people" that was a very deceptive sales tactic. Why not just be honest and forthright. Hi we have free installation for your home all you have to do is pay the monthly fee of $53.00 and a contract you can not break for three years. My husband heard 15 minutes. I had actually thought about getting the alarm. My husband said... Gut feeling, no. Sorry guys intuition always wins! Glad we didn't buy into it. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! If I could give a zero star I would. I was a customer for 14 years always paying on time. I gave them a months notice to move my equipment to my new house and they could not fulfill my deadline. Instead acted as though it was not an emergency. I am a domestic violence survivor, which they knew. I just had 3 surgeries from breast cancer and would not be able to even fight back if attacked. Do you think they cared?NOOOO. So when I switched to a new company who does care and came with equipment the next day, Northstar wants to charge me a fee.....are you serious!!!! read more

The last 8 days has literally been hell. A window sensor went faulty and caused my alarm to sound at random times day and night. At minimum 8x per day I have to turn it off and wake up all night to do the same. I called North Star Tech support & was given instruction to disable the window and the panel kept resetting causing the alarm to trip day and night into the morning. By day 3 I was told the panel is faulty as well & a new one will be shipped. During the course of the next 5 days I made 14 calls to Tech Support because none of the suggestions made the previous calls silenced the alarm. Today the panel arrived & I spend almost 2 hours on the phone trying to self install the new system. I was told a technician would cost 100$ & although I've been through all 8 days of little to no sleep, constant buzzing of the alarm, the fee would likely not be waived. After expressing my disappointment of having to unsuccessfully navigate these issues, the tech guy gives me a speech lasting almost 6 minutes of how North Star is the leading company, and no other alarm company gives deals they way North Star does. No empathy expressed what so ever. This whole ordeal is a nightmare. I literally fell off my ladder while on the phone with tech support trying pull the panel off the wall. It was mounted on pretty tight. Buy a dog! Sleep on your porch! Do anything but buy a security system here. read more

I have been with Northstar for a little over a year and they are, by far, the worst company I have ever worked with. When I use my alarm system I have frequent false alarms, sometimes as many as 2-3/week. One of the first times this happened, I was out of the country. Northstar called and said someone had been detected in my home and the police were dispatched. I was told I would receive a call back and I waited for over two hours. When I called them back, the rep put me on hold, then came back on the line and asked me if there was anyone who could secure my home immediately. I explained that I was out of the country and asked if I had been robbed. They wouldn't answer. They said it was important that someone go to my house right away. I told them my mother had a key, but it was the middle of the business day and she works for a VP at a big corporation. It isn't easy for her to leave her job in the middle of the day. The person on the phone insisted it was important so I called her at work and she left to secure my home. Fifteen minutes later, I received a call from the police department. It was a false alarm. I never received an explanation from Northstar. They couldn't tell me why it took two hours to confirm a false alarm or why it was treated like a legitimate break-in. That's not all. Nearly every interaction I've had with this company has been mishandled. I had to spend hours on the phone with their customer service reps to do something as simple as change my billing method. (I got married and changed my direct deposit to a joint account with my husband.) Every time I spoke with a rep I was told the change had been made. The following month I would discover they were still drawing from my old account. This caused several overdraft fees. I spoke with 3-4 different people before a rep finally informed me I would have to call another company because they had contracted someone else to monitor my account. They said Northstar was still handling my customer service but they couldn't change my billing. It took them several months to figure this out. The rep apologized and offered me two free months of service for my trouble but, just like every other conversation with a Northstar rep, this wasn't done. I had to call again the next month to ask why I had been charged during one of my "free" months, only to discover they had no record of my two free months. This was eventually corrected but I had to spent hours on the phone with Northstar. By this time, I was so fed up I asked for them to cancel my contract. I was told it can't be done. No matter how they have mismanaged my account, Northstar intends to get their money. I've had so many false alarms that I've been fined by my city for wasting public resources. I no longer use my alarm. Northstar has sent techs out to fix the problem on two separate occasions but they can't figure out what's wrong. I got so sick of wasting my time and money that I filed a report with the Better Business Bureau but it was more of the same. Northstar offered me two more months of free service. When I insisted I wanted to cancel my contract, they simply stopped responding. read more

These guys are truly advanced in deception. I worked in alarm monitoring for several years. So I was curious when I went to my 82 year old grandmothers home and saw she had an alarm system. I asked what they were charging her and it only got worse from there. My grandmother is being charged just under $75 a month, for an alarm system with land line monitoring. Any other company, including the big ones, this is less than $25 sometimes less than $20 a month. I called Northstar and began asking questions. 1.) I was informed they convinced my grandmother to sign a 5 year contract. Do NOT do this guys. If you have to sign a contract, never sign more than 2 years. *she still has 2 years of this farce of a contract left* 2.) She has a sensor that has not been working for almost a year, but they want $99 to send out a technician *this will come back up in just a minute* I called Northstar at 11:44 this morning, with my grandmothers full knowledge, permission, and information. I got my first answer at 11:50 by Sarah. She told me that the bill is $66 a month + tax for monitoring. When I asked what it was about the way they are monitoring that was $50 more a month than everyone else, she couldn't answer me. I asked what i could do to lower the bill and she said the only person that I could speak to was the upgrade department. At 12:01 I got Makenna on the phone, in the upgrade department. She told me the only way to lower my bill was to upgrade and coincidentally extend the contract. I told her there would be no upgrading or extending. I asked her what exactly the $75 a month was paying for. She told me the monthly payment is for; equipment, monitoring, customer service access (like the ability to call and speak to her....her words, not mine), and tech support access. I asked how much of the $75 a month was for equipment, she said she couldn't tell me because it is all written up as one monthly sum. I asked how much was the charge for the equipment as a whole, that should be on the contract correct (she agreed yes they put that on there), but said she didn't have access to see that part of the account and I would need to talk to an account manager. I got put on hold, she came back after a few minutes and offered to have someone call me back, I stated I would gladly just hold. At 12:22 I got account manager Zach. He also could not tell me how much of this $75 a month is for equipment, nor how much they charged as a whole for the equipment. He did tell me they charge for monitoring based on how many things they are monitoring for you (HA!). He stated they are monitoring a medical pendant (my grandmother has no idea what this is and was never given one), as well as "a few sensors throughout the house, and a keyfob". This is absolutely ludicrous that they think people actually buy this nonsense. When I told him that $75 a month for landline monitoring is about $50 too much he said " did someone tell you that you have landline monitoring, you don't". I said, how is that because I have a landline, I stated I wanted it monitored through the landline (speaking as my grandmother of course). He said "well the panel we installed has a cell chip in it, so the landline is just a backup". In case you are wondering, you do NOT have to monitor through a cell "chip" or a cell box. You can absolutely monitor through a plain old landline. But they cannot charge you for it. Zach then informed me that I am also being charged for having VIP warranty access. I asked what that meant and he said that in the even of needing a technician, it is a drastically lowered amount of $30-$35 instead of the $99-$129......so they are robbing you blind at install, monthly, and on the off chance that you need a technician. Bottom line, Zach told me that unless I was willing to extend my contract, there was nothing they could do for me. I informed him that I wouldn't extend this contract for anything, that as soon as her time is up, it will be cancelled. (actually it will be cancelled in writing at least 6 months in advance, with POD, because I have 0 faith that they aren't shady in their auto renewals also). I know this was long, but hopefully, this helps you to feel confident that you should not in any way be giving this company any of your money. Again, I have worked in this industry for several years, so I assure you, they are ripping you off at every turn. read more

Incredibly difficult to end service with this company. If you do not send them a cancellation request in writing 60 days before your contract ends it automatically renews for 18 more months. I would like to start out with DO NOT SIGN ANY CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY. My wife was having trouble sleeping at night while I was gone at work. She was afraid of being home alone and someone breaking in. We discussed purchasing a security system but had plans on moving within a couple years so we agreed to purchase one after the move. One day I come home from work and a Northstar Security salesman is at my door. He gave his speech and and the end I told him that we weren't going to buy one until after we moved. He told me that there is no fee for moving and that they will leave the old unit in your house and install a new one in your new house free of charge. Well I no longer had any reason to not purchase it. So that day we did....and the nightmare began. With the market in the tank we decided to rent out our house because we would be unable to sell it in the market. We had finished packing and were going to move in a couple days so I called Northstar to advise them we would be moving so would need to schedule and install date. They told me that they needed a tech to come to our current house and remove the system...at a fee...and then would install it at a later date at our new house. I argued for forever trying to explain that I wouldn't have purchased the product had this been true. But they told me that since I don't have any proof on any signed contract that they wouldn't do anything. They uninstalled the unit, left a gaping hole in my wall that I had to fix. After our move my wife and I went on a walk. We left our phones at home. During that time our alarm system was tripped....were assume from someone breaking in. We didn't have our phones but when we came back we noticed we both had missed calls and suddenly realized that we had a break in. Our Northstar alarm system and been activated....AND SENT THE POLICE TO OUR OLD ADDRESS!!!! We had missed calls from our renters confused about how they tripped an alarm system. I called the company asking for our contract to be terminated and they refused to let me speak to the legal department saying the only way to get into contact with them was by letter. I wrote a letter explaining every issue I had (If i did that here it would be 3 pages long) they told me that if I wanted to break the contract I had to pay the rest of the service term...5 years. I tried to call again to talk to the legal department but they would not allow that. I then went to the Better Business Bureau and after a couple back and forth attempts they offered to pay one month of service for that. Unacceptable. My wife has zero faith in our alarm system. The service they provide is supposed to be comfort in knowing we are safer. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM. This has been a nightmare. They lied to get me to buy the product, they charged me hundreds of dollars to change addresses. They installed it incorrectly. They dispatch police to the wrong house, after I remember the tech calling them and telling them the new address. In order to get a tech to come to our house we had to work around the techs second job that he had so he was only available certain days because of his other job. I have had pretty good experiences with Northstar. They have pretty advanced technology and I like being able to alarm my house from a keypad or my phone. The hold times are also reasonable when you call. When my alarm did go off recently, the police came instead of a security guard, which is great. The only negative issue I've had is a lack of communication sometimes between our local installer and Northstar in Utah. read more

Horrible customer service! My parents had this service, signed a contract in 2014 for 60 months (5yrs). The service NEVER worked right, and my father who signed them up has since passed. Since my mother no longer needs it (she has home health aids with her), we called to cancel. They said they got a "verbal agreement" several moths ago to extend the contract until 2021, so to cancel, we need to pay almost $2,000 - SCAM is all I can say. So if you have senior parents, make sure you stay as far away from this company as possible. In order to even try to cancel, we have to go to her family doctor and get a letter stating that she has had dementia for over a year - so she couldn't have verbally extended the contract. If I could leave a zero-star review, I would! We have been paying NorthStar for five years and would keep using their service, but we are moving to an area that has no internet or cell service. When we called to cancel our service, they tell me about this auto-renewal clause in the service agreement and that I only had three days to get out of it. I was never informed of this clause by your D2D sales rep, and I don't appreciate you trying to squeeze me for another 18 months of service. If they were a legitimate company, they would have given me notice that I was coming due to the end and asked if I wanted to renew or let me go month to month. But no, they want to send someone to my new property and set up all the devices and have me pay for a service that no one is monitoring. For a company that hires BYU Students and is based in Utah, I would've expected better. Bottom line, never do business or sign up with this company!. read more

Would rate Nortstar an absolute zero if it were an option. This by far was the worst experience. It diminished the excitement of being a new homeowner. The extortion fee has been paid to get out of this horrible agreement. I had only been a Customer for 2 months!! Short term financial hit, but long term peace of mind is priceless. We got the system installed in 2014 and have had numerous problems. Whenever there was a problem with the system they tried to not have to come out. And if they do they charge you even for their faulty equipment. The panel went out and I needed support, they wanted me to open all the sensors and get the serial numbers so it could be programmed. It turns out that they reused some of the sensors from my previous security provider. And there final answer was to send me the new panel and told me to install it myself. Also, I had trouble with the second garage door, it would go off every 3-4 minutes. After several calls they finally sent a tech and he said the sensor was in the wrong location. So he replaced the sensor and changed it's location and then left. The next day it started doing the same thing. I finally had to just bypass that sensor so we could get some sleep at night. Then I had sensor batteries that started failing on the old ones they reused and when I called them the support line wanted me to go and open all the sensors and tell what kind of battery they needed. Then he wanted me to go and buy them. So in 2018 when we had about 9mos left on the service agreement, they show up and offered to add a doorbell cam and a fire sensor. After they left we found out that they extended the agreement for another 5 years for about $400.00 worth of add on parts. So fast forward to today I call to disconnect our service which we have had for about 9 years. They told me that I would have to pay off the rest of my agreement. Oh and by the way the extension that was added was not from the date of upgrade it was an extension added to the original agreement date. So after 7 years of service I still have to pay for another 3 years to drop the service. Their unscrupulous business practices need to be investigated. Anyone considering their system don't. And if anyone shows up on your porch to sell the system to you slam the door in their face! Or better yet, let your dog out and have fun!!! read more

I would give negative stars if I could. I posted on their facebook page and they promptly deleted it...and did not respond. Interesting. When we first signed up with Northstar, we were promised working equipment and monitoring by their company. From the beginning, we had issues with our motion sensor as it was continually set off by our 18 pound cat. This is the same cat the installation technician looked at and said it would be fine since the equipment only detects objects larger than an 80 pound dog. We had technicians come out and were advised it just needed to me adjusted or moved but the equipment "seemed" fine. During one of the false alarms, we were called by Monitronics. We were slightly confused as we thought we were still being monitored by Northstar. We re-explained the situation and were told that Monitronics would send a tech out. The technician in fact did come out and replaced and repositioned the motion sensors. Strangely, during this visit we told by this technician that our cat could in fact set the motion sensor off but there wasn't anything that could be done and we should probably arm the windows that open to the area the motion sensor is protecting. Unfortunately, this wasn't initially disclosed, was at a substantial additional cost and Monitronics was not willing to absorb any of that cost and we sure weren't willing to front it. This tech further advised that he would check back in with us and if we were still having issues, he would see if there was anything else he could do. We did not hear back from him and the problems continued...the alarm continued to be triggered, the police continued to be dispatched and our motion sensor continued to not work as we were promised it would. Today, as I was leaving to run errands, I set the alarm as intended in the "away" mode and within a few minutes of leaving the house, I was called by your call center advised the motion had been triggered...but there wasn't anybody else in the house - except for our 18 pound cat. The false alarm was cancelled but upon speaking with my wife, I found out she, our teenage daughters, and the nanny who watches our smaller children have all been setting the alarm in the "stay" mode when they leave so as not to trigger the motion sensor, and have the police dispatched yet again. Besides the fact it is a complete waste of valuable police time and resources, there is a substantial expense associated with each false alarm and it is pretty embarrassing to be known as the house that has an alarm issue. It is furthermore a complete waste of my time having to contact your company for help so often as well as having to respond from work back to my house to ensure the security of my property. We have been having nothing but unresolved issues since shortly after the installation almost two years ago and we are beyond frustrated. At this point in time, I have lost complete faith in this company and it's ability to protect my family and my home. The security of my family is of utmost importance to me and I am no longer secure with the competence of the system which was installed into my home with specific promises, nor the ability of this company to ensure that security. read more

A Northstar salesman rang my doorbell and told me that he was UPDATING my alarm system equipment for my CURRENT alarm company. He was not. He was actually there to get another customer for Northstar. I usually turn away people who come to my door trying to sell something, but because this guy LIED about his reason for being there, I let him in. That was a HUGE mistake. Sales rep started by asking me if I still used Vivint (I had Vivint's yard sign). I said yes. He asked if I had a certain panel and showed me a picture on the tablet he was carrying. I said yes. He asked if Vivint had informed me that the panel was being recalled for starting electrical fires. I said no. He said that Nothstar is hearing a lot of Vivint's customer's saying that and he pulled up a website showing the recall. Out of concern for my family's safety, I signed up with Northstar. When I called Vivint to cancel my service they asked why and I told him. The Vivint rep had heard nothing of the recall and asked that I send him a link to the website. While on the phone with him, I search for the website showing the recall and...IT DOESN'T EXIST!! In fact, I can only find references to Vivint's panels being HIGHLY rated. Infuriated, I call Northstar to cancel. When asked why, I inform the young lady of what had happened and told her that any company that allows it's representatives to use slander to sell it's product is not a company I want to do business with. She said she would look into it and have someone call me. No one called me...I had to call them. They REFUSED to cancel my contract. I opened a BBB case. They STILL refused. One year later, they are STILL refusing. They lie to get into your home. They will say ANYTHING to sell and it's perfectly acceptable to them. Oh and that "3 days to cancel" that is in their contract? That expired while I was waiting on a "call back" that was never recorded! Beware! 1 star is too high. Very dishonest. We have had a security system from ADT for years. One day while my parents were in town and I was at work, a Northstar rep showed up at my house telling my family that he was with ADT and was there to "upgrade" our system. My parents and significant other (who was home by then) thankfully called me at work to ask me about our system and during that conversation, red flags went up. I told the "ADT rep" who was really a Northstar rep that I wanted to read over all the paperwork and that he could come back another day when both homeowners were home. Luckily, after looking into it more, we noticed that Northstar is a completely different company scamming people into signing contracts with them by telling customers they are just upgrading their current contract. After telling the Northstar rep where he could go, and calling ADT, we were able to get a free upgrade to our system... but with the company we wanted and without a scam. read more

They came in selling a promise that if I didn't like the alarm system or that if it didnt work for us that they would take it out and repair anything that didnt look right. They ruined two doors and multiple drywall spots and one plug. They said in the contract it states they wont fix anything. However the salesmen they had come over promised to take care of everything no matter what even if he had to come over himself. Neither the company or salesman did anything to fix the situation. My parents, who are in their 80's, were approached by a young salesman from this company. He not only misrepresented the company and terms of the contract, he flat out lied. They were told the contract was only 1 year, now they find out it is 5 years. My father was not given time to find his glasses before signing because the salesman said he was in a hurry. We have asked the company if they will cancel the contract as the equipment stopped working. The Northstar refused and is demanding we continue to pay even though we have no working alarm. Our next stop is the States attorney general. read more

Before you buy anything from Northstar, read the hidden reviews. I'm not sure if Northstar is paying Yelp or what, but there are 144 hidden reviews that almost all give this company a 1 star rating. My business partner lost his home in a flood in Oct. of 2013. Complete devastation to his neighborhood. The city turned the entire area into a park. Despite his home being a complete loss, Northstar Alarm refused to let him out of his contract. To this day (two years later) they withdraw the monthly charge from his account for service to an alarm for a house that isn't there. We will never do business with these blood suckers again. This company is shady and will put your info. into the credit bureau. It actually sets you up on an installment agreement and your beginning balance is typically over 3800. + They make everything sound great when you are getting your supposed FREE system and then tell you they only do auto credit. OK, if that is true how can they put you in collections? and report to credit bureau when they are cont. to remove funds from MY account and never once have they failed to get my money on time (me not knowing I was basically under a credit agreement). NOT a truth in lending was ever given or never was this explained. I have never paid late one time. I just happened to find the reporting by beginning to view my credit report (I highly recommend you view yours often). THIS COMPANY SUCKS IN EVERY WAY. THE MONITERING SUCKS, THE EQUIPMENT SUCKS AND THE SERVICE SUCKS. SCAMMERS AND CONSUMERS SHOULD NOT USE THEM. read more

I have to echo everything that all other reviewers have stated about the poor ethics of this company and its sales tactics. The sales rep convinced me that my current in-house alarm system was old and outdated and had poor cell reception, proposing to install a better system for me. What they installed after the fact was far from better technology. He also told me to sign the contract under false pretenses by pressuring me to acknowledge that Northstar was not responsible for buying out my existing contract but assuring me that he would issue me a personal check to cover the existing contract. After giving notice to Northstar that my contract is void for the reasons listed above and informing them that I had called my bank and issued a stop payment on Northstar, Northstar proceeded to sell my contract to a company called Monotronics which began autodrafting money from my bank account. I would never do business with this company again. I would never turn over the security of my home to a company that acts this unethically. I hope that everyone who has had an experience like mine will contact their state's attorney general and Utah's attorney general as well as file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and the BBB. This is the absolute worst company! I have called several times to get information on when my contract ends but apparently only one person can give me information but he is never there and even though I am told someone will "absolutely" call me back no one ever does. My husband works for the government and we were transferred quickly to another state. I have tried to cancel my contract but you cannot cancel for any reason for 5 years! Now I am stuck paying for an alarm that I can't even use! Run away from this company! They have horrible customer service! I would give zero stars if I could. read more
