Beautifully rustic inside with wood paneled walls and a warm/inviting crew. We had a prepaid booking for Thursday to use kayaks. Due to the fact that hiking Baron Mountain took longer than we thought, we were really late for our scheduled time and would only have 2 hrs left to kayak for the day. They checked their schedule for openings and let us rebook for Friday instead. We got to do 4 hours of kayaking instead. So AWESOME of them. The girl who helped us move the kayaks across the street into the water on 8/7 was super nice and funny. She joked around with us as she helped us. Couldnt ask for a better customer experience. Awesome! I booked a private guide for moose watching. Outfitter was wonderful. I had booked and then had to change our dates - they were so nice and the stay at their lodge was awesome. Our guide Steve was the best, he really worked hard to find a moose, he found four for us. My wife had cared for her mom for 11 years and our trip brought back my wife. Had a great experiences with Northwoods Outfitters. Was able to make a reservation for a Guided ATV Trip via phone. When the day came the trip was great, our guide Addison was knowledgeable and easy to chat with. We went up to the B-52 crash site and then went to a great outlook on Little Moose Mountain. We saw 2 Yearling Moose on the trip and fresh hoof prints which Addison was quick to alert us of both. My husband was also able to buy a couple day fishing license from this location. We booked 2 fishing trips with Northwoods for the week of 8/16/21. August is not the time to fish for trout and salmon in the Moosehead area - Northwoods could have told us this. We caught 1 small fish in two days for several hundred dollars. We separately (not through Northwoods) booked a trip to catch smallmouth bass, and it was great - we caught over a dozen. Northwoods called on Sunday to ask if we could move our Monday trip - which we could not. The guides were not energetic and did not make extra efforts to get us to fish - they took the lazy route of fishing a close spot constantly, catching nothing, and calling it a day. I would not recommend Northwoods for honest advice or a quality fishing trip. read more

First, info on the Inn associated with N.Outfitters. I stayed at the Moose Mountain Inn. Rather old, but very clean, basic, room, with good service. They advertise a continental breakfast but cereal is less than I had in mind. They have free wifi - a good perk, and there are 8 miles of hiking trails, Little Moose Mountain, located to the left of the parking lot. Northwoods Outfitters was great. I booked a private safari and had Ashley as my guide. She is a wealth of information (a female Steve Irwin!) and her knowledge of the flora and fauna of Maine extends way beyond moose! I'm an avid naturalist and was surprised and thrilled about how much I learned from Ashley. We saw numerous moose, loon, even an immature bald eagle. I highly recommend booking a trip with this company. Even if I didn't see moose, I would have enjoyed my trip. read more

No moose at all on the private moose safari. Our guide actually said "you guys will probably have a better chance than me of spotting them in the backseat "which did not leave us feeling very confident that he would do his job. We spent most of the four hours bouncing around the back of a rickety SUV. While the canoe ride was pretty, we were surprised we had to go with our guide and only one of us was allowed to paddle. This was about 45 minutes of the 4 hour tour. And did not spot any moose. Those that were coming in as we were leaving the site said to us as we passed "giving up already? " At one point we actually just wished the entire thing was over because it was futile. read more

Stay AWAY! They charge you extra after the trip is over! We do not recommend them and will book with a different company next time! 1) Their ATV/side by side/snowmobile trail is one of the worst. You have to drive on the road (regular road and share with other trucks and vehicles) for 15 miles until the actual trail starts! Once the trail started it's still like a road than trail. 2) Their side by side rentals are in bad conditions. Even if it's not your fault for loosing a small plastic part they charge you hundreds of dollars because you have to put in a $1500 deposit! They don't maintain their rentals or tightening parts and you will pay brand new prices for any of the loose parts! Stay away from them! read more

We met up with our guide, Tim McCluskey, and the other five customers at Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville, ME. After introductions, we piled into a big van and headed out to look for moose. Tim drove to about three places where he has often seen moose before, but had no luck. Then he drove past First Roach Pond to another pond I didn't get the name of. There, we unloaded and got issued canoe paddles and life jackets. We walked downhill on a rocky path to where the canoes were stopped, Tim hauled the canoes downhill to the shore and helped everyone get situated. He went through basic canoeing paddling techniques and safety. A couple rode in the canoe with Tim, three gals rode in a second canoe and Kay and I rode in the third canoe. Tim stressed the need to be very quiet to avoid scaring off moose. We paddled a hundred yards or so and, as we rounded a point, Tim saw some kayakers parked along the opposite shore taking pictures. He understood in context this probably meant that there was a moose further inside the cove and cautioned us to be extra quiet, follow him and get ready to join our kayaks into a raft. As we went past the kayakers, we saw an average sized cow moose (500 pounds) standing nearly shoulders deep in the water and mud eating water vegetation. We eased around in front of her and near the opposite shore from her. She watched us, but was not particularly concerned about us. Tim got us positioned so that all the canoes were parallel to each other and close enough that we could hold them together as a raft. Tim then directed us to back the raft so that the rear of each kayak was in contact with the shore enough that the canoes wouldn't drift. Everyone was facing the moose which was maybe twenty yards across the water from us. We sat there for about forty-five minutes watching the moose feed and move around. We all took lots of photos and videos. Tim had some binoculars and passed them around for anyone who wanted to use them, but we were close enough it really wasn't necessary, even for Kay. Another guide and his canoes arrived a little later and they rafted up near the kayakers. Tim mentioned that the cow moose probably had a calf nearby and we all watched behind and around her, but never saw one. Eventually the moose had eaten her fill and decided to leave. We expected her to go up the bank behind her and disappear into the woods. Instead she walked across the shallow water almost directly to where the kayakers were. They saw her coming and got out of her way. The moose continued on the land, passing behind us within 25 feet or so and stopped behind some trees and appeared to be calling to her calf. We never saw or heard the calf, but we heard the cow head deeper into the woods and well out of sight. We undid our raft and paddled out into the middle of the pond looking for other moose. We didn't see any other moose and the sun was low in the horizon, so we headed back to the canoe landing. Tim landed his canoe first and helped each person get safely and dryly out of the canoe. Then he helped each other canoe land and its occupants get safely and dryly out. Tim hauled the canoes back to their storage location and secured them with a cable and lock. Many of us took photos for each other with Tim. We walked back to the van and turned in our paddles and life jackets and got back in the van. On the way back to the store, Tim slowed several times to look carefully for other moose or other wildlife, but we didn't see any. He did stop so we could take beautiful sunset pictures of Moosehead Lake, Maine on the way back. When we got back, the store was closed, but Tim told us where we could eat dinner in town and they had restrooms. Tim McCluskey was a fun guide, Very professional and knowledgable. We drove up from Rockport, ME and it was a long drive, only 107 miles each way, but that took about 2.5 hours because virtually the entire journey was on two-lane rural roads. I can't say enough about how friendly, pleasant and professional the staff at Northwoods Outfitters was. They arranged for a day of snowmobiling with their Maine Guide Steve - he was great. And a day of dogsledding with Stephen at Song in the Woods. They made sure we were properly outfitted, going so far as to check all of our zippers to make sure we had the clothes on properly. They went way above and beyond after we lost our car keys. For two hours everyone on staff did everything they could to help us find them. We were unsuccessful, but it wasn't for lack of trying. They stock very high quality equipment of every sort, clothing, gear, etc. They even have a nice coffee bar. You don't need to stop at the other Maine outdoor clothing and sports landmark - Northwoods has anything you need. read more

We had to wake up early as hell to come on this trip, but it was 100% worth it. Ashley was our tour guide, and she made the whole thing awesome. I think even if we didn't see any moose (for which we were prepared) it would have still been a cool trip. We got a motel stay included in our ticket, which was at the Moose Mountain Inn. My wife and I vacationed in Acadia N.P. for the week after Labor Day and one of the things we had to do was see a moose while we were in Maine. I have wanted to see a moose all my life, so, we drove the 3 hours from Acadia N.P. to the Moosehead Lake Region (also beautiful) to go on the Moose Safari. We chose the private Moose Safari. Our guide, Steve, was awesome. He was extremely knowledgable about moose, Maine, outdoors and all the like. He drove us out to some remote part of Maine in the forest where we canoed on a completely hidden and wild lake. The lake canoeing itself was very pretty, and the three of us were literally the only three humans to be seen or heard for many miles. Steve clearly has Eagle-eyes when it comes to spotting moose; soon after we launched the canoe he spotted a (male) moose in a bush - neither of us saw it! We quietly watched the moose and continued paddling along the lake and where he spotted two more moose (female) eating. Again, we quietly watched near those moose. On the way back was the most amazing! During the sunset, we saw a male moose and female moose. We were so close we could hear them eat, hear the water dripping off those snout, hear them grunt and we can hear and see the water going every which way when the moose would shake it off their bodies. Needless to say, we were really close and it was magnificent (but he always kept us a safe distance)! We actually had to paddle in-between the two moose to get back to the canoe launch point! The whole trip was amazing, and we will remember it for the rest of our lives! We would strongly recommend this to all moose enthusiasts. Ask for Steve! The Moose safari itself was pretty good. They took us on a canoe tour thru a beautiful lake with very scenic views. That took about an hour and a half and we did not catch a single moose during our canoe time. Then we drove thru a lot of back country roads in search of one. Eventually as we were ending and giving up hope we saw one thru the trees. We only had time to take a couple of pics of a barely visible moose and a big tour party with kids came up behind us. That scared the moose and that was the end of our tour. So have to downgrade this as even though the tour was good; we did not experience the final goal of seeing a Moose close by on a MOOSE SAFARI. read more

We did the moose safari tour with this company. Service is outstanding. Mike, the owner, was ,nice, effiicient, and accomodating. I cannot do the canoeing because my right hand was injured and he said that he can make it worked for me with one of his trusted guides, Mark. My husband, son and I were very pleased with the trip. Then once we did, she knew how to approach it to ensure that it would not run off. Tim was an excellent guide and knew how to find the Moose! It was very exciting to see a moose eating by the water as we were canoeing. On the drive back, Tim was determined to try to find another one. Surprisingly, we saw 3 more moose, a black bear, and fox. My husband and I recently visited Moosehead Lake. We had two excursions through Northwoods Outfitters. The first was a moose Safari. It was fabulous. Steve was our guide and I highly recommend him. We saw four moose, one bull. Steve got us so close to the bull that we were able to watch him eat for a very long time. He also pointed out other wildlife. While we really wanted to see moose, the serenity and peacefulness of the pond early in the morning would have been worth the trip. I cannot recommend this excursion enough. Go in the morning. Our second day we did a guided fishing trip with Eric. He was funny and patient. I am the worst fisher person in the world, but Eric was very patient with me as he tried to help me catch fish. Everyone at the shop, both before and during our visit, were very helpful and polite. They seemed to really care about us having good experiences. read more

ALWAYS have a written contract from this company on company letterhead and signed by the owner, only. Do not accept or rely on ANY VERBAL STATEMENTS! I was presented with a bill for services, that I had canceled via mail 6 months in advance of the date for the service. On the rest of the services requested, the price was changed from the price quoted on an email 9 months earlier of the date of service. The price quoted on the email bid was $590 for the services. On the bill it was changed to $950 and then doubled to $1900. Northwoods Outfitters refused to consider the mistake in billing. read more

Went on a water moose tour here and it was incredible. We signed up for a group tour but we ended up being the only ones there. The guide was excited and knowledgeable. We were lucky enough to see a moose up close and personal as soon as we got to the water. Even then the guide was determined to keep going and made sure we got to see another one. We did get rained out of going on the canoes but the guide was happy to drive us around and show us the hidden spots until the full length of our tour.
