We have been bringing our cats here for over 20 years and they have been the best! They have taken care of all of them from newborn to our aging pets as they have passed and we couldn't have asked for better care. Everyone from the front staff to technicians to doctors are friendly, professional and always show they care. They always take the time to pass on knowledge, answer questions and make sure we understand the care needed by each cat we have owned whether it's just annual vaccines, teeth cleaning/removal, diabetic shots or specialized care and medication. My little baby kitty (she's not a baby...she two but she's MY little baby) came down with fleas and whatnot and I was worried about her general health. I brought her in and we were seen at our appointment time. The front desk seemed like they genuinely loved pets. This is a plus, because I've been to places where they look annoyed by the pets for some reason. Anyway, we got into the room and the nurse assessed my baby. After doing a quick check and getting an idea of what needed to be done, she went to get the vet. Our vet was very nice and quick. She cleaned my kitty's ears out (she was getting an infection, and what might've been mites) and made sure her shots were up to date. Products and services weren't pushed on me, and they didn't make me feel bad because I didn't want a service (which has been done at a vet I previously took my kitty to). That was appreciated and I plan to keep my baby at this vet. read more

I was very disappointed in the quality of my visit. I am new to the area and this vet is 5 minutes from my home so I thought I'll try it out. After adopting a senior cat from the local animal society I was given a voucher for a free examination. I took the cat for the exam at 2:30 and wasn't seen until 3 for an appointment i was told would take 20 minutes. While there I asked about some discharge from her eye and her sneezing. After the less than thorough exam they told me the eye was fine but she had build up in her ear that they needed a culture of to diagnosis accurately (no monetary discussion at this point). They also told me it didn't appear she had been spayed and suggested I contact the animal society to have that taken care of. After the culture was taken from her ear they brought me some ear drops and sent me on my way. I had asked about cost to spay my 4 year old 90 lb dog while I was there and was given a quote of nearly $600!! When I went to leave I was asked to check out and $97 later I was on my way. After completing the ear drops as prescribed, her eye much worse now and closing up, I scheduled to have the animal society reevaluate the cat I adopted that "wasn't spayed". I asked kindly for them to look at her eye while I was there. I find out she is in fact spayed and has an eye infection. I was given medication for her I and sent on my way without a charge! Needless to say I will not go back to that vet for my cat or my dog EVER, because I believe they are just there to collect money and have no concern for the well being of the animals. I don't mind paying for veterinary care as long as I am receiving proper and effective treatment at a reasonable price, and they didn't give me either one of those. read more

As far as staff goes, you can't get better than Northwoods Vet Clinic. I just adopted a cat, and they were very welcoming and reassuring for my first visit. They handled my cat with care and helped me understand some essential information. I will say their waiting area is extremely clean and pleasant smelling, but the retail shelves/walkway is a bit cramped. Also, I waited at least 20minutes, even though I arrived on time. Perhaps they were still filling out paperwork for me as a new patient? Overall, a wonderful experience and only blocks from my home! read more

I definitely appreciated how nice the staff and doctors were with my dogs. There was a short wait (5 minutes) to get to our room, since an emergency had come in ahead of us. The waiting area is separated, one side for dogs, one for cats, and the walkway between is rather narrow. Additionally, there is a bookshelf holding meds along the walkway, which makes the space even more difficult to traverse.. Add animals to the mix.. yeah, maybe not my favorite situation, but everyone was friendly and it was no issue for the staff to navigate around the dogs. We had to wait for a while once we got in the room (10-15 minutes) on a tech to come in and confirm that we were doing a wellness check and which immunizations I wanted. It took a while for the vet to come, but he seemed well acquainted with my dog's breeds and was able to discuss issues with me without making me feel like an idiot, which I always appreciate. The vet was quick with the immunizations and neither dog reacted at all. Of course, their favorite part was the peanut butter they got as a treat. The rooms looked older, as was the table, which was not adjustable, which is nice for us big dog owners. My least favorite thing was that my dogs had to be taken into the back for weight/blood draw. Call me overprotective. Prices were reasonable and the location is convenient, so we will probably be back.. hopefully next year for wellness visits, and not before! read more

Dr Burgette is in my opinion one of the best vets we have ever worked with. She's patient and loving towards our animals and she takes time to explain and educate us so we can make the best decisions for our pups. In fact, we followed her from another clinic. Dr Burgette saved one of our dogs lives and she cried with us when we lost another. I can't recommend her and any place she chooses to practice from enough. read more

I have used this vet on and off for years. When I was with other vets it was due to those vets being the vet of a rescued pet. I have decided they are going to be my only vets from now on. I went in yesterday with a semi-feral cat. They were just over the top caring and providing the best ever care to my sweet but scared kitty. From the moment we came into the office and were offered a Feliway towel for him to the offer of a neuter on the spot since "he is here and sedated". How caring and open to doing the best for a scared kitty and concerned mom!!! I will never go to any other vet no matter the circumstances! I wouldn't recommend this Veterinary Clinic. They seemed to be more concerned about adding to their pockets than helping their client-owners find the best solution for their pet and situation. The last two times I took my dog there, the techs and Veterinarians were very timid. My dog was having skin issues and they were so timid and scared that they didn't even "physically" examine her. I basically gave them free money for an office visit to hear them regurgitate exactly what I already knew and explained to them what I had already researched. I also told them I didn't want to put my dog on Apoquel because I had read about the potential deadly side affects, but guess what... they still suggested the medication for my dog anyway despite me telling them I don't feel comfortable giving that to my dog. Just recently they refused to fill a Cephalexin prescription I requested for my dog to ensure her anal glands wouldn't get infected. My dog had been scooting and releasing a foul fishy oder from her anal area on and off for about a month. I explained to the lady on the phone all the dead give away symptoms my dog was experiencing and they still denied my prescription request. I found out through Chewy Online Pharmacy that they denied the prescription, They didn't even have the decency to call me and let me know why the request was denied either. So I called and they gave me the "your dog needs an exam excuse" etc etc. My dog just had an "examination" less than a month ago before the request was made. In SC, at minimum, as long as you have a VCPR (Veterinarian-client-patient relationship), a veterinarian is required to fill a prescription request. Cephalexin is an ANTIBIOTIC, its not like I was requesting pain killers for my dog. Its standard for vets to express and wash/clean the area where anal glands are and prescribe your dog antibiotics. I had already given my dog a bath and expressed her anal glans, But yet they insisted my dog receive an examination to ensure the glans were expressed and to make sure there weren't "any internal injuries". Take my word for it, this vet is just like most doctors they just want your money and they know you'll do/spend almost anything to make sure your babies/pets are ok. read more

If you're looking for great and compassionate customer service, this is the vet to go to! I noticed my cat had worms, and they got me an appointment same day. My cat had managed to escape when i took her outside to go to her appointment. I managed to catch her, but then i was running super late. I called Northwoods and they were super understanding and told me not to worry about being late (not to mention i was the last appointment of the day, so i felt even worse about being late). Everyone was so nice and knowledgeable. While at the appointment, the vet did a full check-up and gave her some vaccines she was due for. She needed two different medications for her worms and one was a pill. I explained to the vet that there's no way my cat was going to let me shove a pill in her mouth, so he did it for me! What a relief! I've never seen her so calm in a situation like this. At the end of my appointment, they even gave me a free sample of flea/heart worm/worm medication. They answered all of my questions and didn't rush me whatsoever. And wow the prices were way lower than i thought they would be, so that was a great plus. So, we chose this vet when we moved here one year ago on the recommendation of an acquaintance. They have been 'okay', but I have had some issues here and there. First, being that they were closing their office once a month for a "staff meeting" and not sending an email out to let clients know. I went one day (and it was out of my way to go), used my lunch break to go and get heartworm and flea and tick meds for my dog - only go find their door locked and a sign on their door. Next, their prices! Extremely high. Not to mention I felt like I was being nickel and dimed for lots of things. I've had pets all of my life, and know what's needed, and what's not. Then there was the time when I had to make an appointment to get my dog's nails trimmed. He has some anxiety about this, so it was recommended that I pick up what they called a comfort pack to give to him some hours before the appointment. When I got there, they made us wait for over 45 minutes! That really did not help his anxiety, and by the time they did come to get him, he was so worked up that it was like he had never had the comfort pack!! What's the point of having an appointment if you have to sit and wait for almost an hour??? Also, it took all of 5 minutes for the girl to do it, and when she came out with him, she said "he would need a larger dose of the comfort pack next time." No thanks! The straw that broke the camels back was when we brought him in last, he had to have the K9 influenza vaccine, which requires a booster a month after the first one. They told my husband they would call to schedule that. When no call was received and I realized it had been a while- I called. They said it had been too long and he would have to have the first one again...at my expense! (Another $50!). They said "an automated email had been sent", and that bc of that, they weren't willing to help with the cost. I checked my email several times to make sure I had not received an email...nope...no email! Then it occurred to me that maybe bc it was automated, it could have gone into the junk mailbox. Sure enough- there it was!! If they rely that heavily on automated emails and don't have people can actually do their job ( and do what they say they are going to do- Ex: call to schedule that appointment!) than we need to find a new vet! I asked for our records to be sent, and they could have cared less! All they would have done is take partial responsibility and split the cost (since they didn't do what they said they would do in the first place!) and everything would have been fine. I hope it was worth it to them to lose a client, and believe me when I tell you that when friends ask me for a vet recommendation, I will be able to tell them where NOT to go. read more

I cannot express how grateful I am for the wonderful care that my animals received at both Northwoods Veterinary Clinic and their sister clinic West Ashley Veterinary Clinic. The doctors and staff at both veterinary clinics go above and beyond to provide compassionate care to their clients. Having moved from Baltimore to Charleston, I had no idea where to take my animals for care. I had gone to a few veterinary clinics before finding them and once I found them, I knew my animals were going to be taken very good care of. Having worked in veterinary clinics over the past 15 years, both clinics surpassed my expectations of client and patient care. All of the staff from the front to the back are personable, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I am very sad that I no longer live in the area and am able to take my animals here.
