I am not nor have I ever been a nurse but I for sure would never talk to anyone in such tones! This place used to be the best bet in Charleston, I don't know what happened but they don't listen and can't use meds other vets have for my dogs ears! They keep trying the same things over and over, ear drying ointment not enough antibiotics, one treatment has worked and they don't do it it's insanity! This used to be a very compassionate vet, now it's being run for money and the Drs are short and rude when I inquire again and again why my pups ears aren't clearing up! They charge outrageous price at a well dog visit after said and done. If you don't bring stool sample they will still charge you under assumption you will bring back soon. Winston was a patient at West Ashley Clinic for over 10 years, since May 2013. The reception staff and treatment team always took great care of his health needs. We took excellent care of Winston. So no matter when he needed medical care, we made sure he got it. However, our most recent experience lacked concern and compassion. We were out of town with Winston. We reached out to the clinic for advice/support after we took our sweet boy to a local veterinary clinic. We called several times but West Ashley failed to call us back until two days later. Winston had already passed by the time West Ashley got back to us. We called them back to let them know we didn't need a follow up appointment and that he passed the day before. We did not receive a compassionate and concerned response. We are highly disappointed. read more

I needed a second opinion for my 14yr old pittie, about whether or not to have a tumor removed. The first vet recommend surgery with a long recovery time. On the recommendation of several people I trust I decided to take her to West Ashley Veterinary Clinic. During the first visit the doctor was straight forward and told me that she did not recommend an expensive surgery for a dog that old. She said that this was more than likely "THE THING" and for me to enjoy the time with my pet instead of an expensive surgery with a long recovery time. She said if I wanted to go ahead with the surgery they would, but that their opinion was to give her something for her arthritis and enjoy the time I had with her. I got another four month with her and when it was time to put her down this place made it very easy and accommodating. I'm very glad I took my pup here and would definitely recommend it. read more

This is the best VET I have ever had!!! My 8 week old female Shitz tzu, they had from her first vaccine to getting spayed, they were so attentive they even mailed me a surgery shirt I accidentally left because I couldn't leave my girl or get in the car after her spay surgery! They called every few days and checked on her, they got me anxiety meds to keep her calm immediately after the anesthesia wore off she wanted to play, and were so attentive! I was a complete wreck having lost her Sister 2 months prior to getting my new baby girl, with an awful experience at James Island Vet with her from 2017-2021, I refused to take my new pup there it was so bad! I discovered this vet and would trust them with every puppy, dog I have, we moved and if needed I will come back if necessary just for peace of mind they get it right! They use rewards food, my puppy loved all the staff and Drs, was excited to see them which never happened and didn't flinch with a shot! They're worth the wait, worth getting in when you can, and they love the animals, knew her name played with her, they all talked to her, we are sad we are not in Charleston because we miss them!!! They emailed me all her records, they sent to vets where I am swiftly, and are still giving me advice on vets where I'm at now! The prices for Charleston are the lowest I encountered, it's a pricey place Vet wise this place is worth every dollar and their knowledge is exemplary!!! I called and spoke to Mallory about emailing me my dogs records so I can board him at a doggy day care. Mallory emailed me records with the Vaccine date reading 00/00/00 on all of his vaccines which they have the records for. I called back and asked if they could put the actual date the vaccine was received because boarding will need this information... ( having their own overnight kennel they should know the type of info and details needed). Lauren C. Tiereny then sent over the same email but instead of reading 00/00/00 for the date received, she wrote "given by previous vet" for the dates received. There is no excuse for the blatant laziness. I spent my time having to call back asking them to do there job correctly for them to basically sent the same email twice. They are our current vet , we have spent over $1,000 within the past 18 months with them. They have all of the previous records that we need to board him elsewhere. I'm not sure if they are bitter that I don't want my dog staying at their dingy overnight kennel or they're always this indolent. If they can't email simple records with the proper dates filled in, I can only imagine what other simple tasks they neglect or just flat out skip because they don't feel like it. They are quick and responsive and LOVE their patients. I have been looking for a good vet for my American bulldog and I was able to get him scheduled. He has been having linor seizures and they told me about a neurologist that comes in often. They are so reliable and sweet and they really want the best for your pet. I've taken my 3 pets (1 dog, 2 cats) here since I moved to Charleston in 2014. I used to live in West Ashley, so the location was handy. Now I live on JI but I like their services and staff so I still take my animals here! They send out reminders via email for check ups and medications. They also send them by mail occasionally. Staff are nice and knowledgeable. We have seen different veterinarians in the 3 years of going here - all are helpful and great with my pets. The space is big and they have a separate dog and cat waiting area, which is smart. My only complaint is I wish I could pay for expensive visits in installments, but I always have to pay in full at the time of service. Great place, definitely recommended! read more

They had all day to let me know Dr Badger had shifted her schedule around bit decided to wait until I got there early for my 2 pm appointment to put in the door there was a meeting from 1-2. I politely waited 15 minutes for their meeting to end. I get Inside only to find out that Dr Badger was not in the office but decided she was gonna work in the N Chas location today. So here's your rescheduled appointment. Aaaargh!! Not to be all negative but this just seems to happen every time I have to come here. Dr Badger is great with my dog and I am willing who wait for her. I just would've liked a phone call to let me know she was in N Chas and I could have made arrangements. Amazing vet! My dog is my baby and I am very skeptical as to who I take her to. The techs are great with your animals, very patient and sweet. You can tell they love what they do. The vets are also gems. I never felt like I was being rushed out and they took the time to answer all of my questions. When one of my dogs needed to be seen ASAP they were able to fit us in within the hour. I have called for advice a few times as well and they are always helpful and quick to respond. I use the grooming salon as well. I am always pleased with how my dog looks and the price is very reasonable. When I first moved here with two geriatric dogs, I picked this vet because it seemed to be the best one in West Ashley. we've had many problems at the vet office with Vets, specially Dr. Spitz telling us incorrect information. She told me my dogs heart murmur had gotten worse and that she tested for heart worms and pushed the canine cardiologist hard. She said that it wouldn't be more than 150 dollars. when I called the cardiologist they said it was 700 to walk in the door. later, another vet called me to inform me my dog did not test positive for heartworms, it was a mix up. we've also brought our cat in for his kitten shots and they mixed up him and his chart and the correct vaccines with another cat that was there. When they informed us about the mix up they said it wasn't a big deal. which I disagree. all and all the staff seems overworked and underpaid and they are a very expensive clinic. proceed with caution read more

I found great reviews for west Ashley clinic and requested an appointment easy online form and appointment scheduling. However, upon receiving a response confirmation I asked pricing and for a simple meet and great they charge $180-$200! That's insane! I can not imagine how much their other services will be. I'm very disappointed with West Ashley Vet. We have been going here for years. I was desperate to get an appointment for my cat that was clearly ill and explained that we could not get into the emergency clinics the night before. All the receptionist said was 'sorry we are double booked'. That was not helpful. Let me start off by saying that I'm a veterinary technician and just moved to SC from MA. Previously, I worked in a shelter for many years - so I understand the struggle of shelters AND veterinary practice. We adopted a dog from a shelter down here and had a certificate for a free exam. Now, I get that nobody wants to do things for free and I would never have requested to receive anything above a basic exam free of charge, but I asked the doctor to check things and he just simply wouldn't do it. He said all was well without even taking a LOOK. That is so crazy to me! I just wanted him to really look at the dogs skin because it smelled "yeasty" to me and also to check anal glands because he had been at them (I know I can do it myself but I didnt want to!). Nope. I ended up contacting a veterinarian friend for advice and purchased duoxo on Amazon to help with his skin and expressed the anal glands myself. His skin seems better now.... Wicked annoying. To be fair, the doctor (who's name I don't remember right now) was VERY nice and the front desk staff were friendly too. But I won't be going back. read more

Well, West Ashley Vet Clinic is our best vet yet, and they have a high bar to get over. I would highly recommend Dr. Irwin and his team. They are friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and progressive. Though they have been at this awhile, you can tell they follow the latest advancements. Dr. Irwin also gives you feedback on how to work with your dog, not pushing it on you, but helpful tips and tricks that a vet just learns dealing with dogs. To give you an idea about his staff, one of them carried my German Shepherd dog out to the car after surgery, because she "does it more often". I was perfectly willing and able; they just go the extra step at West Ashley. Thoughtful, kind and focused on the pets as well as their owners. I really can't say enough good things about them. Our dog has received a check up, blood work as a part of that, chipped, xrayed (hips) and has been spayed by them. read more

They quoted me $1,500 to have 3 teeth extracted from my dog and my new office gave me a $500 estimate. Are you kidding me?!?! Easily one of the better clinics I've been to. The yearly physical is very thorough, and the shots are over quickly and relatively painlessly. My dog is a 'fraidy cat and he didn't even really mind this place. The vets know how to work with really skittish dogs. On the other side of the house is the pet care center. Rates are super affordable, and if you use the vet next door all the information on your pet is right there for them to pull up. My dog was boarded for three nights with absolutely no issues. They also sent me an adorable card welcoming me to the clinic! This place has the personal touch but with the professionalism and cleanliness of a large clinic. I still love this veterinarian office, they're fantastic. I just took our second cat for his annual rabies. They were so gentle and caring for him! They want to have a "no fear" experience for all animals so they provided a towel with catnip sprinkled in one spot and a popsicle stick of spray cheese in case he wanted a snack. I especially appreciate that they have separate waiting areas with a barrier for cats and dogs. My cat is afraid of dogs so he's much more at ease without seeing the dogs on the other side of the barrier. Once we were in the exam room both the tech and vet were kind and gentle to him. They worked on getting him comfortable before jumping into any examination. They were quick and efficient with the exam and rabies shot. We were in and out in less than twenty including wait time and checkout time. Every time I come here they have amazing customer service and are running on time. The techs and the doctor were so good with her, it was one of the most painless experiences we have had thus far at a vet in the 6 years we've had her. They didn't try to sell me any goofy products or unnecessary exams, the facility was spotless and even the photographs on the wall were nice to look at. I've seen pretty much seen every vet in the clinic and all of them have been wonderful with my Shih Tzu! They give her lots of attention (which she loves) and are very gentle with her. I have been able to get same day and next day appointments every time I've called. They seem very knowledge and keep me informed about what is going on with my dog. The only reason I did not give 5 stars, is because on once occasion the receptionist did not acknowledge me when I came in, and actually took two other clients before me that came in after me. It wasn't until I said something to her that she asked me if I needed any help, although I was standing at the desk. That irked me! However, as I said, that was only once. I am the proud parent of a nervous pitbull who HATES having his nails trimmed. I visited West Ashely Pet Care Center as a walk in hoping they could work some magic on him, and although they couldn't restrain him themselves they had me walk next door to the vets office where there are more hands on deck. With no appointment they immediately said they could work him in. Michelle at the front desk was more than welcoming and accommodating. It took three people and a muzzle but they got his nails trimmed and even took the time to sit and feed him some cheese afterwards as a peace offering. I am new to town and had been reading reviews on different clinics around me, but with this visit West Ashely Vet Clinic won me over. We have been going to West Ashley Vet since the late 1980's. The care our dogs have received through the years has been superb. One example: One of our dogs (a hound mix named Riffraff who passed away in 2009) had a possible case of canine Ehrlichiosis. I have been a client of this practice for almost three years now. Ever since we moved down from Long Island, NY. I have truly loved so many things about this office. I loved the high tech office where blood work is done right there many times while you wait. Surgery is done there... I could go on and on. But the one thing you can't get everywhere, and I don't care what kind of technology you have, is customer service and compassion. Today we had to say goodbye to our dear cat Annie. Dr. Van Liew has recently been treating Annie for an inoperable tumor and a back problem. I chose not to try surgery because Annie was 19 years old. It was extremely important to me to not only keep her comfortable but to make sure that she maintained a good quality of life. Dr Van Liew estimated that we would have a couple of months with her. She prescribed pain meds and an anti inflammatory. There were times when I had called just to speak with her about Annie's declining condition. She called me back and truly took the time to hear me. Yesterday I knew today had to be the day. I called this morning and Michele at the front desk helped me set up my appointment. She truly cares. She understood and I didn't have to say much as I have been so choked up. Laura, and the rest of the techs there are just amazing at each visit with our pets. Today was a rough one. I can't begin to tell you the comfort and care that each person working there gave to my husband, my daughter and myself, but also for Annie. This truly was the most loving way they did this. I have had to put pets down in the past, but never here. This was done where Annie was comfortable and peacefully laid to rest. Dr. Van Liew, you are so much more than a doctor. You are a gift. You have shown me how to treat Annie as a hospice patient without ever telling me that's what you were doing along the way, until today when you mentioned that to me. I needed to go through the process. You allowed me to to do that. I will forever be grateful to you for what you have done for me personally and for our beautiful Annie.
