I ventured into a most interesting establishment in Winona this Friday evening, and it proved to be precisely the tonic I required. The dining room was delightfully serene, with only a select few patrons present a peaceful arrangement that I found immensely welcome given my disposition. Upon my arrival, the gentleman assisting me extended an incredibly warm and friendly greeting. His attentive hospitality was thoroughly consistent throughout the evening, and I found the caliber of service to be entirely satisfactory. After requesting the menu to review their selections, I settled on the Pork Belly Tacos. The waiter politely inquired if I would care to include a side of rice with the dish, which I gracefully declined, and my order was processed with admirable efficiency. I must also commend the interior architecture and design. The venue possesses a wonderfully historic, old-world soul, yet it remains impeccably well-maintained and structured rather than ruined. What a great place! We got reservations which help since this place is popular. We came for early dinner. We ordered a mock cocktail and their chardonnay. We had the wedge salad and caesar's. Garlic shrimp and mussels were our mains even though they are appetizers. The brought yummy slices of focaccia slices. The wedge salad is huge using romaine not head lettuce. lots of bleu cheese and bacon bits and cherry tomatoes. The caesar's salad was good. The mussels were fabulous. Slightly spicy. Portion size was amazing. The service level is top notch. Very attentive without being a bother. The bill is a bit weird. They add a credit card charge. This is a really cool restaurant in a neat building. We tried a bottle of the Sancerre wine and it was delicious. The folks eating with me enjoyed the veggie risotto, beet salad, and pulled pork and brisket sandwiches. I did not care for the lamb gyro. I wanted to love this place...but the food didn't live up to the price or the ambiance. I had scallops. They were overcooked and overly salty - the saltiness was something I heard from others in our party whether the pasta or the Cuban Sandwich. The risotto was OK but not anything special. For starters, the bartender had no concept of how to make a brandy old fashioned. But...it really continued with the polenta/morel appetizer. If anyone has ever ruined a morel in my nearly 60 years of foraging and eating them, this place took the prize. No flavor and pure dirt and grit. The beet salad was completely flavorless. I was entirely disheartened with the scallops, while cooked to perfection, they were gritty and served over a risotto that had a fake cheese sauce which made me want to vomit when the flavor touched my lips. . The waitress kept taking away full plates of food and never once asked if everything was okay. We have eaten here before and LOVED it, however Saturday night was a complete waste of money. The finish was the "rhubarb" cake which lacked rhubarb. Big disappointment all the way around. Perhaps new chefs? I won't be in a hurry to return. A Pleasant Surprise. I am gluten free and website was quite descriptive. I called and asked and the receptionist was exceptional. She was knowledgeable, articulate and a great resource. We came to to the restaurant based on that conversation. We we not disappointed, my wife had the scallops and I had the brisket special. Both were exceptional, one of the best meals I've had lately. The service was amazing. The waiters were so nice and attentive, but I was a little disappointed by the food. I had their special Birria taco burger, and it was very very salty. Also, the sauce they put on the side was frankly just gross. My boyfriend had the Nosh burger and it was the most weird tasting burger I've ever had. It's not that it was bad. It just wasn't normal. We ordered the beet salad, wagu beef with Korean fried rice, paella, and matcha cheesecake for desert The beet salad was good- warm beets with sweet crunchy walnuts however it's a small serving. The wagu meat was very tender and had good flavor, however the rice, in my opinion, not savory, but spicy- the true Korean flavor was not as authentic- it was mostly gochujang flavored. The paella was very good- it would be nice if it was made with chicken - or an option with chicken. The matcha cheesecake dessert was light and airy and perfectly sweetened. Not too sweet. Lovely. Who would have thought that Winona was a foodie city? We recently had a chance for a short trip to Winona from the Twin Cities and were thrilled to discover some great eateries in Winona. Leading the list for us was Nosh. Nosh is definitely a restaurant that reaches the highest of gastronomic delight. We had limited time for our visit but sought to maximize our ability to sample some of the dishes at Nosh prior to a concert we were attending that evening. We began our dining adventure with Creole shrimp cocktail. It was served with a Chipotle lime cocktail sauce. It was a delightful combination that definitely satisfied our palette. Next up were bowls of cream of butternut squash and apple soup served with wild rice, couscous, chili oil and chives. It was a great melding of flavors that we really enjoyed in such an interesting combination. We then moved on to roasted exotic mushrooms that consisted of roasted oyster, shitake, and cremini mushrooms in a cherry cream sauce served with grilled bread. It was another treat that we greatly enjoyed. Running out of time for our visit, we had to skip out on the main course and moved on to dessert. We had a couple of different desserts that were unique, beautifully presented and tasty. Our table service was exemplary as our server would magically appear whenever needed and was extremely helpful in making choices of things for us to try with limited time. Nash always delivers a great menu with various items updated regularly. The atmosphere is vibrant. You should call for reservation, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Nosh is probably the best or second best restaurant in Winona. I ordered the hanger steak, which was excellent. It was accompanied by broccoli which was perfectly cooked, but the potatoes were kind of hard and dry. I wish they would mix up the potato choice for the hanger steak once in a while, They had a shrimp cocktail special. It was as good as any I've had in Florida or other coastal areas. We've dined here a few times and have always left wanting to go back. The drinks are delicious and there is a large selection. The desserts are always wonderful. Our entree this last time was so disappointing it has left me always choosing another "special occasion" dinner option. The hassleback potato was delicious. The Brussel sprouts were good but slightly over cooked. The prime rib was almost inedible. It was super dry and even the jus it was served with couldn't save it. Between 2 of us, we ate maybe 12 bites. We ended up taking the rest home and cutting it up for the dogs. The salad we started with (something with a poached egg) was incredible. The other two people with us throughly enjoyed their meals. I was just super disappointed with ours. I would still recommend NOSH to anyone looking for a higher end meal in Winona. read more

Incredible experience! We sat outside and were seating quickly at around 6:00/6:30. We ordered the Asparagus soup, wild mushrooms and the pork belly tacos and this was an incredible meal -- probably one of the best I've had in a while. The perfect amount of food between two people that allowed us to try a fair bit of options. So many unique options and a great range. I dined at Nosh a couple of weeks ago while visiting old friends from my WSU days. All I can say is - wow! The restaurant scene in Winona has improved dramatically since my last visit four years ago. The menu at Nosh has a lot of variety and as a pescatarian who also needs to eat low carb, I had no trouble finding good options. We started with a shared appetizer of dates stuffed with blue cheese and rolled in chopped nuts. It was simple yet with complex flavors and textures. The sweet creaminess of the dates offset by the salty funk of the cheese and slight crunch from the nuts was a study in delicious contrasts. I then had two more appetizers to round out my meal. Two perfectly seasoned and nicely sautéed crab cakes with a slightly spicy aioli went quite well with the mussels in curry broth I selected as my "entree". The mussels were plump, tender, and delicious. And the broth was divine. I'm sure that diners who don't have to pass on the toasted bread that comes with it enjoy soaking up every last drop of the perfectly seasoned and warming goodness of the broth. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions. We also enjoyed the creative cocktail menu. Finally, we were seated in the dining room off the main area by the bar, which made it easy to enjoy a relaxing meal and catching up with each other. I had the seafood paella and it was excellent. I was very impressed for Winona to have this restaurant. I agree that the beer menu can be improved especially having a brewery one block away but the cocktails were great. Let me start this way, she's a 7, but charging prom queen prices. Yes it's a good 4 stars as the seafood paella entree was exquisite. Tasty, robust, filling and leaving me wanting NO-thing. I was coming off an extremely disappointing 4-forkful warm beet and arugula salad. That was a joke. Portions 4-5x this whiff at a salad would have been a correct exchange for an $8 plus item. That said, the Paella was flat out worth all of it! I'm blown away with their "skillet" version of this delectable seafood dish. The Scallops, mussels, shrimp, chorizo and snapper mingling on the jambalaya-type rice was a uuuuuge YES. The wine list was top notch as well. My only suggestion would be to stop trying to be that high end "go-to" place. You do you, the staff do not fit the suit/tie bunch soooooo ..... Sure, I'll drop $60 on this solo meal but that seafood and wine will keep me thinking it was a firm but fair arrangement. read more
