In New Jersey anyone can become a tax preparer with just a $20 IRS PTIN - no education, no test, no license needed. A true CPA must complete 150 college credits, pass a 16 hour exam, complete a year of supervised training, and pass an ethics course I mistakenly assumed Lou was a CPA based on the firm's name. Unfortunately that mistake cost me: * He made THREE major errors on my return (all later confirmed by an actual CPA). * It took nearly a month for them to even acknowledge my first email. * I had to research tax code myself and feed it back to them to prove their mistakes. * When I finally spoke to his daughter, Michelle (who was working on my return despite my appointment being with Lou), she became aggravated and hung up on me. * His office stalled me for five months and then refused to amend my return despite their mistakes. * Friends who referred me are also having problems with their return.
