Outings and community involvement /outreach/college student outreach etc was what attracted us in first place. The fact that it's not meeting in a church per se is another astuce as we believe the church should be out there, not within 4 walls. The preaching is Bible based, without shortcuts or deviations according to the world or current events, and practical which we feel is the most significant aspect.

Pastor Chris's messages are often grounded with relatable anecdotes and remain topical to what's going on in the world while avoiding politics. If you're someone who believes in gentle love toward your neighbor (even when it's hard), acts of service, and a desire to grow while retaining humility, you will fit in pretty well. Connect Groups are also a great way to socialize and form friendships that will genuinely push you toward becoming a better person. I feel extremely blessed to have found this place and to be able to look back on the progress I've made in my mental, emotional, and spiritual health through the bonds I've formed over the years. The choirs sing songs that are familiar & I get to sing along. The praise & worship team does a great job ushering in the spirit before service starts. It's a church open to all. It is close to the University of Chapel Hill so traffic at times can be hectic depending on what's going on in the area. The church is surrounded by eateries and shops. The church has a really small parking lot so if you're not there early, you'll have to find street parking. I'll be visiting more often and see all that First Baptist has to offer.

I just remember so many angry black people, that always talked trash about me. I'm black btw. This church was very segregated. Only had blacks in the 90s from what I remember. I hope they are blessed, but I've moved on to New Hope Church in Durham, NC. You can come as you are there, and it's a phenomenon. No place is perfect, but I CANNOT support a church that put me through that.

I went there from ages 5-18…read more I genuinely had fun up until I had to join the youth group at around 12 or so and they started teaching us insane things. Dinosaurs walked the earth with humans. The earth is only 2,000 years old. Anti-evolution. Divorce is a sin but remarriage after divorce and having another kid is an even worse sin and that said kid would be living in sin from birth(Since this applied to me, I asked what that made me and I was told my family was excused from this and I was just a miracle. Huh? How were we absolved from this so-called sin?) The LGBT are just faking and are rebelling against their parents. Those were were in the LGBT were shamed. I once walked out of a Sunday School class because the video we were watching said black people and white people were separate species. I was also the subject of some 'You have a cat? Are you afraid your mom's gonna feed it to you!?' 'You have weird slant eyes!! open them up more!!' "jokes" from some adults. This church has outdated, conservative ideas while acting like they were progressive. If I could split the rating up, I genuinely did have a fun and good time up until I was around 12 - I liked the sunday school teachers, summer faith adventure, the christmas parties, and other events they had for kids. After I joined Youth Group, though, it was about 6 years of homophobic, elitist, conservative, uncomfortable teachings. If you are not white, you will be subjected to prejudice. If I had joined the church after the age of 12, I would be giving it only 1 star rather than 3. The 3 stars are for the lovely sunday school teachers I had as a kid.

The theology, however, is considerably conservative, and despite lip-service to accepting various opinions, different views are not especially welcome. The policy towards the LGBT community is basically "to make them so uncomfortable that they would just leave". The middle and high school youth are being exposed to such things as "dinosaurs walked on earth with people". Others have experienced issues of racial slights and prejudice. If you are a conservative looking for a contemporary church home, this is a fantastic place. If you are progressive in any way, you won't feel comfortable here for long.
