While I am a member of IWLA's ARL-FFX chapter, I gotta say that the NRA HQ Shooting range is not a bad place for me to shoot now and then. Especially since the pistol and rifle ranges at my club are outdoors, it's convenient to come here when it's super windy or super rainy. You don't have to be an NRA member to shoot here, but you do get a discount. Also, there are no gun rentals at this range -- if you wanna shoot, bring your own firearms. They also have range rules on what ammo you can shoot, and they will check your ammo before they assign you a range. Thankfully, they have ammo for sale if your ammo isn't shootable at the range, and/or you forgot your ammo. If it's your first time coming to the range, you will be required to take a range safety test (if you're an average shooter with common sense, it's nearly impossible to fail unless you're intentionally trying to fail). Once you pass, you get a range card that you have to pay for, but once you buy it, you never have to pay again (unless you misplace it). Also, ladies: I recommend coming out on Thursday night! Not only do you get a discount on your range reservation, but you also get a free range card on your first visit! All in all, the NRA HQ range is great. I want to give a huge shoutout to the staff at the National Rifle Association. I thought I had lost my wallet while I was there, and without me even having to ask, one of the gentlemen immediately went back and reviewed the security footage to help figure out where I may have left it. The entire staff genuinely helped look for it and treated the situation like it mattered to them too. What really amazed me was that a few days later, I actually received a follow-up phone call asking if I had found my wallet. That kind of customer service is almost unheard of these days. Sadly, true customer service feels lost nowadays, so when a company goes above and beyond like this, it deserves to be recognized. Was introduced here via a Groupon via Guns-n-Gear for Concealed Handgun Permit training for my wife and myself. Adam was an excellent instructor and taught us the basics on a .22, resulting in both of us getting our training certs needed for concealed carry. So excellent that we've gone back for 2 additional lessons so far, and more in the future. Staff here is very welcoming. The first time you go here, they'll have you read the rules and take a small range test - you then get a lifetime range card for when you return. They do sell ammo and eye/ear protection if you need it at the front desk. However, they don't rent out guns or let you rent eye/ear protection. As for range prices per hour, it's $15/hr for members or $30/hr for non-members. The trick here is to apply to become an NRA Associate-level member for a year as that's only $10, then you're eligible for the cheaper rate. We ended up going for an annual family membership (which covers 2 people) for $450/yr for NRA members. If you're going with your spouse or significant other, this pays for itself if you're going ~1-2x per month, and if you're an enthusiast, even better! I haven't looked at many of the other ranges in the area, but if you're in the Northern VA area inside/near the beltway, this seems to be the easiest to get to and most convenient from a location standpoint. read more

The right to bear arms shall not be infringed! Card carrying member of the NRA, because I'm tired of being a law abiding citizen, and have seen my rights challenged or taken away. The second is as important as the 1st amendment, and it's under bill of rights, not permissions some whine about it. This organization and range are top notch. I'd like to thank the ladies and gents, whom are range officers here. They are professional and diligent about safety. I applaud their work with firearm safety and education too. This range is beautiful. Usually I get my "group therapy" here. You name it, you can probably fire it. Usually my 1911 goes here. I love my Kimber despite some not finding them reliable. They are and worth the price of admission. Range time is affordable here, and also the capabilities are impressive. You will have to take a safety test first time, and I'm grateful for this. Beautiful facilities. Nice range. Staff could be friendlier. They weren't rude but they are far from welcoming. Smiles seemed few and far between from the staff but they are extremely knowledgeable. Politics everywhere - Fox News and other pro-all-guns-everywhere-things. Its expected at the gun range of a gun lobbyist but someone said there are "no politics" and that just isn't true. The safety test is $10 and you get a lifetime card. Range costs for NRA members is the cheapest in the area at $15 per hour but non-members are at $30, which puts them toward the top of the price bracket. No photos on the range is very very strange (1st amendment comes before the 2nd the last time I checked.) This makes this range a bit of a no-go for my practice as I like to video myself to make technique adjustments. All in all if the facilities weren't so nice it would get a 2. Customer service means a lot and folks new-to-firearms tend to be nervous and need a welcoming face with a smile. Just didn't find that here on my visit. read more

I'm an NRA member ($10 off) and have been to this range twice on Sundays. A perfect time to get your target practice in if you ask me. There's not too many people here if you show up early around opening time. They are open Wednesdays through Sundays, closed Monday and Tuesday. I guess they don't get much business earlier in the week. First timers will need to take a VERY easy test that takes about 15 minutes to complete. One that is done you'll get a lifetime range card here. The staff is real nice and extremely patient with new people. I watched them do some 1:1 coaching for those that were struggling. Their shooting range is awesome. They have some well maintained lanes and their target system works great. Just set the distance and send it off. No need to manually hold down a button like other places. If you forgot eyes or ear protection, they have plastic ones for sale. They'll do in a pinch if you don't feel like driving back home. I went shooting for the first time at the NRA shooting range and I've been back a few times since then. I was nervous at first, but I eased up after a few minutes of being inside the actual range. I first had to take a test to make sure I understood the rules of the range and general practices. I felt very safe and the staff was constantly making sure everyone was following the rules. The few times I went, there was no wait, and we were able to get started right away. It's well worth the hour drive to this clean, safe establishment. Note: some other reviews suggest that they are discriminatory against certain races, but I did not feel that at all as an Asian female. The staff is very helpful, and you cannot be safe enough when it comes to this environment. read more

I went here for the first time last week and was very impressed. The range is very clean and well put together with a pleasant and helpful staff. I arrived right behind a group who were there for a birthday party but the staff greeted me quickly and got me squared away. With these guys, it's safety first - They have you take a short test before going to make sure you know how to handle a weapon and I counted three range safety officers who kept an eye on things. I finished shooting all 100 rounds of my ammo then thought, "where did the time go?". I would highly recommend this range to any amateur or pro shooter. read more

This range is located on the left of a big building, you gotta follow the signs. I've only been to one other shooting range, but this one is pretty decent! Came here on a Thursday night and we found out it was Ladies night! I believe there was a $5 discount. If it's your first time you have to take a little test in their classroom (don't worry it's open note). They just want to make sure you're reading all their rules and it shouldn't take more than 10 mins. The workers seemed pretty nice and were helpful since it was our first time at this range. There was even a that helped people that took a little too long to take the test. There is the first time fee so you can get your NRA range card, but after that you just have to pay to get in. They sell ammo, but we brought our own. We also brought our own ear plugs and eyewear, but they actually provide them! I thought that was pretty neat since the other range I've been to, you have to buy ear plugs/eyes or bring your own. Most of the targets are only 50cents, a couple other special ones are $2 I believe. Once you walk in, no video recording and photos allowed. This is a 5-Star firing range. I cannot say enough positive things about the Range Officers who are professional, helpful and who keep the firing line safe. If you wish to learn how use a weapon, this is the place. I have watched various instructors - both male and female - with new students of all ages, each very attentive and encouraging. There is a Monday night pistol league which welcomes all skill levels and scoring is done with a handicap. This is my first year and my husband and I will renew our annual membership-- a great deal if you are a frequent shooter. I highly recommend the NRA range for all shill levels. read more

For someone who's never been to a gun range before, I didn't really know what to expect. First we took a test to make sure we knew all the rules and regulations. After passing the test we made our way onto the range. I was very hesitant as I've never shot an actual gun before. Luckily I was with friends who were Afghan Combat Veterans and they showed me the ropes. Everything was top notch and the staff was extremely helpful. They came by our bay a few times just to check in and see how we were doing. Although I don't actually own any guns, I will gladly come back with them just to hang out. Without a doubt, this is the best range in Northern VA! It's clean, well-lighted, and the shooting lanes are spaced well and have plenty of room to either sit or stand while shooting. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Perhaps more importantly, they are safe and ensure shooters are safe using the facility. You have to take a test prior to being allowed to use the range. The staff will give you the materials to study before-hand. Some people may consider this an annoyance, but I think it's great. It makes people take things a little more seriously and helps with safety. The prices are very reasonable compared to other ranges in the area. Because it's a great range and because it has great prices, it tends to be crowded during weekends. Plan ahead. If you come on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you'll probably wait a little bit. read more

I had never been to a range, and had only shot a gun once before (a .22), so if you own a gun safe, or think highly of Ted Nugent, or scoff at Mission Impossible movies because 'he could never have made that shot,' then maybe this isn't the review for you. But regular dudes, read on! I arrived with some friends and was shuffled into a waiting room to review a few pages of instructions on gun safety and rules, and then took a short test. Then I paid $20 or so to use the range for an hour. I was given goggles and ear-muffs, and entered the range through a two-door system. The benefit of coming to a range with a few buddies that own an assortment of guns is that you get to shoot multiple types of weapons. I mostly shot .22s, a pistol and a rifle, and then a revolver in the .30s, probably a .38. I shot at paper plate targets, and there was a stapler at almost every booth to change the targets out. I think I hit a bullseye on my third shot, classic beginners luck, and my last of the day.The booths are set up nicely with a table and touch screen controls to bring the target back and forth. 1) If you want to see guys with shirts tucked into their pants, go here. 2) I thought it was funny that I was given a 'non-member' card. Look, I know I'm not an NRA member, but I don't need a card for it. I guess if I return within the year, I don't have to take the test again. 3) The staff was nice, but the range instructor was very nosy and basically had no trust in the guests. I was annoyed, but later I thought that that's probably the safest bet for a range instructor, right? He kept telling me to aim at the corners because I was aiming down. He called everyone 'Shooter," which made me think of Happy Gilmore. You aren't supposed to take photos, but I missed that part of the test, so I took one, and I'm going to share it, the photo of my first bullseye, and if they don't like it, I guess they can take away my non-membership card!!! read more

It's hit or miss here... get it? Sorry, bad joke. My first experience here was only soso. I was a novice attending a training course and the grumpy lady behind the counter didn't have much patience for my lack of experience at the range. However on subsequent trips, my mind was blown away (okay, I can't stop the bad puns), with how nice the younger lady behind the counter was. She was very patient with me and clearly pointed out where the training was to be held. Here's the run down if you haven't been here before - Turn into the NRA building, but direct your car to the right side of the building. The parking lot for the shooting range is on the bottom level all the way in the back. You have to take a 30 minute test that's open book before you get an NRA card. Even if you are not a member, you need the card to show that you know the safety rules. Then you sign up for a shooting lane. There usually is quite a wait. You can borrow the headgear and glasses for free, but I suggest bringing your own, since the equipment is a little ill-fitting/smelly. When you do get earmuffs, get ones with a high rating. Even if you don't intend on shooting a high powered rifle yourself, your lane neighbor might be, so you'll thank me for the higher DB rating. Bullets here are also a little pricey, but that's to be expected. They need to make some money! There's also a viewing window where you can see your friends. This place "hits the mark..." I know the NRA is pretty polarizing in itself, and while I don't always agree with the politics, I see them as a...wait, no, this is a review. The range has some odd hours, but the facility is nice, the current team of employee's are great, very helpful. This is a modern 50 yard range, which allows high powered rifles. So it is very common to see a few lanes with AR-15s. It is well lit, and each lane has a small table, and a full length cardboard target backing to use the provided stapler to afix your paper target. (a note on this, ALL TARGETS NEED TO BE POSTED WITH THE BULLS-EYE AT THE EYE LEVEL OF THE SHOOTER, TO PREVENT YOU SHOOTING THE FLOOR OR CEILING DOWN RANGE!) The NRA does a good job at providing classes, and the opportunity to enter into the world of "competitive" shooting. An example, Monday nights at 1800(6pm) there is a .22 caliber pistol competition that costs $11. Your scores are ran with a handicap (think golf) allowing a newbie or poor shot (like me) to actuality compete against the talent. This is a great place to teach your children to safely shoot. I do recommend wearing both ear plugs and ear muffs as if someone is shooting a rifle in the next lane it can be a bit much. There is a small store at the range with ammo, cleaning supplies, targets, odds and ends. The NRA will loan you hearing protection and Shooting glasses as needed. A note on people complaining about the "absolutely no photography" rule, which some of the pics here clearly violate, guns are seriously dangerous, and deserve your complete attention...people posing for a shot, while seemingly innocuous, could lead to unsafe action. So, keep your finger off the trigger, keep those barrels pointed downrange, and pay attention to what is behind your target (is it the backstop, floor or ceiling (or wall if you are shooting at the first or last lane. read more

If you desire to sit in the lobby all afternoon and have dropped internet connections while on your phone, this is the place to be. The seats are cushy and comfortable and the lobby is pretty nice. There is a view of the range, looking like your average range when compared to others in the area. Nothing particularly outstanding there. Your more likely to sit in the lobby and watch people shoot, and it's unlikely you yourself will be able to shoot before you get a 5 o'clock shadow. Get used to the lobby, because shooting there is what you will not be doing. Your time is better spent driving to one of the other ranges in the area. The NRA has great range facilities. There is a $10 one-time processing fee for those that have never been to the range--the fee covers the test and the card. My sons and I are from Las Vegas, here in VA visiting my parents. They offered to introduce my 11-yr-old and I to shooting for our first time and brought us to the NRA range. The staff was excellent - professional and patient with us newbies. At no time was I concerned about my son's safety. The range itself is very nice and there is a large lounge area where Grandma and my 7-yr-old son could watch us shoot. I don't have loads of shooting experience but I was in the military and did get somewhat comfortable handling firearms. I usually stop by here on Monday mid-morning and rarely have to wait. The desk staff have always been helpful to me. I usually buy a target (too lazy to pack free paper plates, I guess) and as a non-NRA member, pay the higher rate for lane rental. I find the range officers to be extremely helpful as a fairly novice shooter. They've stopped and corrected my hold which reduced my stove-piping to almost zero. They've given gentle reminders about safety items. When I first purchased my handgun, I took a course to become more proficient. The teachers were great, the class had a lot of useful content and the one-on-one hour was the best. Parking is convenient. I've been here with a social group on Saturdays and even with trying to get all of us out on the range at the same time, the wait is pretty decent, less than 30 minutes usually. Seemed like he was profiling him for some odd reason . I'm all for safety and the guy was obviously shaken and giving a good faith effort to comply but the range instructor seemed eager to further escalate the situation. Put me off even as a bystander . Range instructors like this Will drive people not only from your business but from shooting and we can use all the support we can get . The nice thing is, i usually don't have to wait and safety is a paramount concern which is why I like taking new shooters here.
