When asked about insurance, I replied with my Medicare advantage plan. At that point the person with whom I was speaking stopped me, claiming that Medicare would only pay for a dietitian if there were a pre existing condition such as diabetes -- anything else is strictly self pay. Afterwards, I contacted my Medicare advantage carrier and found out this response was completely inaccurate, that there are no prerequisites for being seen by a dietitian. It is my understanding that the carrier reached out to the clinic to clarify, but did not receive a reply to several voice mail messages. Not sure whether Medicare or the disability caused this misinformation to be communicated, but my trust was lost immediately.

I'd never met with a nutritionist before, but I had been shamed by plenty of doctors for being overweight, so I was very anxious about our appointment. B was amazing. I have Hashimoto's and PCOS, which make it very hard for me to lose weight, despite working out 5 days a week and being a pretty picky eater. B acknowledged my health conditions and made sure I knew that both of my conditions had huge metabolic implications and I hadn't done anything "wrong." She never made any assumptions and was very body-neutral. The paperwork I was given says not to starve myself or skip meals in multiple places. This is not somewhere that will tell you to be hungry. We spent an hour reviewing my medical history, diet history, food preferences, and what a typical day of eating looks like. Then we covered some nutrition basics, which I found very helpful. B related things to my specific health concerns, which made it even more useful. She let me know that if this was too basic, we could move on. I'm a visual learner, and the packet has photos and charts to make it easy to read.
