It pains me to post this but I've given the owner 2 requests and over a week to reply an:
Dear Lynn,
I came in to your salon last Saturday and I have been very stressed about my haircut since then. I believed that Michelle having 85 5-star reviews on Yelp would be the perfect fit for a correction of a previous bad haircut. When I made the appointment and she said the salon was NY2LA, I was very happy since I am from NY but she made no mention of being from NY herself and it made no difference to her. I told her on the phone I had short hair and I needed a shaping. Instead, what I found was typical Valley girl who did NOT listen to anything I asked her to do and did something I asked her not to do because she talked incessantly about herself while I was trying to be quiet so she could concentrate.
I was 5 minutes late and apologized; I tried to ease into the conversation by admiring her crystals. Then I proceeded to tell her EXACTLY what I wanted her to do. And that includes the technique to use. I was very clear I wanted her to simply remove all the ends left over from someone using thinning sheers and a blade before. I specifically told her, "no thinning shears, blades or texturing." Showing her, I pulled the hair between my fingers, taking small pieces at a time, demonstrated a "straight or blunt" cut with the scissor and then blending the same all the way up. I said I wanted to grow out the shortest hair on top so that it would ultimately become shoulder length again. I also said if I had the terminology wrong to please correct me. She didn't. She stopped listening right then when she said, "you should just grow it out and come back." What? I just wanted a TRIM. Truthfully Lynn, I should have left then but I couldn't. I took two buses to get there. And since I did get a haircut (of sorts) that whole conversation was meaningless.
But what happened next was very disturbing. She started by telling me her family which was interesting but then she went on to ask me if I had a boyfriend. When I said no, she asked me if I wanted one. I said yes. Well the next thing I know she's telling me all about her unseemly love life! For real? So now I am trapped into giving her dating advice and engaging her into conversation further. And Twice she asked me the same question she had asked me before.
When I told her I was losing hair to female pattern baldness and I have attempted to cover it up with a Long Pixie, I expected a professional to say something helpful like, "I know this can be frustrating; I have had a few women clients who are experiencing this...I've found this product to be helpful or have to heard of or tried...?" What she does is pull back her bangs to show me the same area on her head and said monckingly, "then I must have it too." Again, I should have left but didn't.
When she gets to the bottom at my neck, I see in the mirror she's using the thinning shears! WTF?! I said, "you're using thinning shears." She did half the bottom and said, "I could stop." NOW? She simply didn't pay attention. She proceeds to defend the use of them by saying, "it's different using them on the bottom then on the top." Pardon my French but BULL! The shears have teeth and it removes EVERY OTHER PORTION OF HAIR, LEAVING SPACES that will curl. This creates ends...the very same ends that I came in there to remove! By then it was too late. The side she started on is missing hair and the side she stopped at has too much hair.
When I said I needed the bangs to be cut sideswept to lay like a wing and it didn't, she said, "you have to curl it that way." No, you don't have to curl, blow or iron it that way, you have to CUT it that way. I had explained that because I was losing hair on the sides, the bangs had nothing to hold onto. The bangs are choppy and won't stay back. Since I haven't wet it yet, I shudder to think what it will look like afterwards.
back. It means they know it doesn't look good. When I said 'this is sticking up' she
It is ALWAYS a bad sign when a stylist has to be asked for a mirror to see the said, "no it's not." When I said that the bottom was flipped under, she said, "that's what your hair does." No, it doesn't. It's not my first short hair rodeo. If it was cut the way I demonstrated it would lay properly, period.
All because she didn't LISTEN to me to begin with. Hairdressers need to understand that the client knows their own hair better than they do. I'm guessing that the people who weren't satisfied just didn't write reviews. Because I know I will.
The only thing I will give her credit for is the blowout.
I'm disabled on a fixed income, and that was $60 cash, gone. I even asked a cousin last night at Thanksgiving if she would trim the bottom for me but she felt uncomfortable and she said no.
Honestly, when I heard the remnants of a NY accent, I wished I had seen you instead. read more
