I've been stopping here for years, but I haven't stopped in a while. This is a great little store. There used to be a Burger King, but it was replaced With a Mexican place. The Mexican place has limited hours. I haven't tried it yet, but when I do, I will write a review. The convenience store and the gas is open 24 hours. There is a post office here, but there is no counter service. It's primarily. P.O. Box and mail pick up by local residents. They do have a 24 hour mail drop, with pick up in the early morning. The convenience store is nice. It's clean, and the people are friendly. I like the decorations in the store. It has your usual. Beer, wine, food, snack, snacks, sundries, and it also has a small hardware section, which a good amount is winter gear. It has a small but nice souvenir section as well. Prices are pretty typical on some items, and then on others, they are a bit higher. I got an amazing beef jerky, and the price was reasonable for what I got They do sell chains in the winter time, but believe me, you are going to pay for them. There's plenty of parking, including truck and RV parking. There's also a popular snow park in the winter time. The elephant in the room, is, of course, the gas prices. You are pretty much in the middle of nowhere, with only a few gas stations in the immediate area, so you are definitely going to pay for gas. The best thing to do is fill up in Sacramento, Auburn, or Reno. The gas in Colfax and Truckee is a bit higher, but still well below what they charge here. I like this store. I will be back. What a well stocked, small store for travelers passing through. There were pumps and plenty of parking out front. They had plenty of snacks on the shelves and many drinks in the refrigerator section. I was surprised about the amount of snacks and the selection of snacks they had. This store is clean. The lady who checked us out was kind and helpful. I would stop here again to get snacks and fill up next time I am passing through. It is definitely worth checking out. read more

More than a Shell gas station, this is also a convenience store and a gift shop. I stopped in for my second cup of coffee and sort of hoped that the power outlet next to the post office was live. It was not. This is getting pretty high up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, some 5200 feet. You'll notice that you're maybe just a little bit out of breath from any exertion. But it's entirely passable and has been since covered wagons passed through here in the 1840s on the way to find gold in California. This is an excellent spot to stop for gas and stuff. Great selection of snacks, drinks, basic snow needs etc. and basic automotive needs such as windshield solution. Great prices they don't gauge you. All the employees are really nice and helpful. The bathrooms were clean. We usually stop at the exit with subway but this is now our favorite spot. read more

Bathroom smells really bad and not clean. Went to purchase some items. The cashier didn't offer me a bag. After I paid I asked for a bag, she bagged my items and said it will be 10 cents. Unfortunately I didn't have 10 cents on me, she said you can pay with your card. Are you kidding me? I spent $20 didn't get a receipt and $150 in gas! What is this world coming to? We stopped here to get gas driving back home from Reno. The store inside is super cute I love the decor and they also have so many things that you could grab for snacks on the road. They have hot chocolates. They even have an option for an abuelita hot chocolate, the Mexican chocolate. Anything you can think of for snacks, frozen sandwiches Icee drinks and lots of sodas to choose from ! Very big soda machine .They have clean restrooms, which is a must when traveling. On the side of the road where the gas station is they had an area where they had kids playing in the snow I seen that it says $25 for parking to play on the snow. I didn't even know they did that. I may have to bring my kids to play in the snow here! In the store they also sell a lot of things for the snow !! Which is pretty convenient if last minute, you see the snow and decide to just to just hang out for a minute you could just buy anything you need for the snow at this store! Overall, super fun store to look at things to buy like souvenirs, snacks, and to use a clean restroom. read more

I find this to be a handy convenience store - bigger than most, they've got a large selection of items... foods, drinks, bigger selection of things like jerky (which I'm a fan of). Most convenience stores have maybe, what, two brands of jerky? This place has probably at least six brands... a few well-known national brands as well as local and regional brands. They have a lot of other things too - even snow boots! (makes sense that there might be a demand since the park across the street is used for sledding in the winter time. The prices aren't Walmart or Costco prices... but hey, you're at a desolate store up in the mountains next to a freeway - what do you expect? All things considered, I didn't think the prices were crazy-bad... they were pretty much what I expected. I grew up in a small town in the mountains, and all of our prices were higher than in a biggish city. The bathrooms are hit and miss... pretty much like most service stations and/or convenience stores. I don't hit it every trip, but I'm glad it's here. I participate in an overnight event held in the park across the street every year in late June, and it sure is handy for that (they have bug spray!) read more

Cool little gas station store. This is a place you can look forward to stopping at for needed fuel during a long car ride. Bathrooms were also nice and clean. Down side is men's bathroom is a one person only but at least us girls had the privilege of a 4 stall bathroom . Staff was friendly and helpful. Don't expect cheap prices though. This is a cool place to stop in the Fall, Spring or Summer months. Great convenience store with the look and feel of a nostalgic General Store with lots of stuff for kids to look at. Particularly the ones below discussing chains...how many cities did you pass BEFORE you hit Blue Canyon? lol Also, Most of you are from northern california..its not like you couldnt have picked up chains at your local walmart when you KNEW it was snowing up North. I will give a thumbs up to Nyack Shell. I had several occassions met with them and they were always very pleasant and helpful. When I was younger, I had many personal problems and found myself literally abandoned in Nyack...the folks here allowed me to use their phone to make several calls, use their facilities and fed me while waiting over 8 hours for help to get to me. As a much older adult, I always stop by this shell when I'm up north. Whether I need to or not, I always buy something to return the good deed that they did for me. read more

This used to be a stop we would make to grab a bite at the Burger King which is great. And get snacks from the store before heading out driving again. Sadly we have decided to no longer make this one of our stops, because as truckers we have trash we need to dis guard of, my husband went to throw a trash bag away, we know as drivers to not throw a larger bag in small trash can, so he went to throw it away in the back and an employee came running out saying no no... that bag is too big. It was a regular size bag which was not half full...the point being is that this very cute gas station has truck driver parking in front which we were thankful about, but why not place one or two trash cans out there for our fellow truckers who I'm sure give great service to small mom and pop shops like yours. Once you pass a certain elevation you'll notice that gas prices rise with said elevation. So it's not a good deal up here, but it is one of the few gas stations in the area. The charm comes from the fact that they have Shell artifacts like a gas trolley from yesteryear, and strangely, quotes put up and signed by celebrities like Sean Penn and Robin Williams on their walls. read more

Yep I am one of those idiots that waited till here to buy chains... 68 freaking signs on the way that tell you to be ready to chain up, and I wait till I get here. Anyway, I got the cable type chains, price was $68 dollars, checked online when I got home, the price was pretty reasonable; they could gouge the customer and charge pretty much what they want. You don't have much choice once you reach this"point of no return" Gas prices seemed pretty fair for this high up. Coffee was good, restrooms were clean enough. Well this little Shell station is The Hub of the community of nyack, there's a little convenience store and gas station, the post office is next door there's a parking lot across the street for semis, and a little park across the street the other way. When we ask where the town was we were told this is it, this is the whole town. So if you'd like to explore the entire town this is the place to stop. We came here because our radiator broke.. and needed some tools for a quick-fix. I called in first to make sure they had the tools we needed to spare unnecessary miles in case we drove there and they didn't have the goods. When I called, someone promptly answered the phone. The man said he was pretty sure they carried the stuff, and before I could say anything he offered to place me on hold while he made sure. "Yes! Thanks!" I can appreciate the gesture of going the extra mile! So we came, and sure enough the gas station there was crazy packed that day. We picked up everything we needed, plus a few cups of delicious hot cocoa. =) I would have given this place a high 5 star rating if it wasn't for the ridiculous long line for the ladies' room! There is a Burger King adjacent to the convenience store. But the line for this was even LONGER! I waited about 45 minutes in line just to place an order! If the line goes out the door, I wouldn't recommend waiting guys. They ran out of things like buns, ketchup, and chicken strips. Nevertheless, the workers there were energetic and patient with the grumpy customers! the cashier even said that that day wasn't that bad! That's so insane. We were taking a spontaneous trip to Reno, we got caught in the snow on I-80 without chains. We were told to turn around and try the Chevron off of Cisco Grove. We did, without hesitation or checking out the car we were quoted a price of $150 from the men behind the counter. We declined and went on our way. I checked on Yelp and came across this location. I called and Andrew answered, it must've been about 3:30am and he was so helpful and answered all my questions. Over the phone he quoted me a much better price and said he would check the tires when we arrived to be sure. Long story short we bought the chains we needed, he told us who could help to get them installed and even gave us a quick lesson on how to do it ourselves if need be! (This was our first time ever using chains and driving in snow.) He was so nice, patient and helpful and we appreciate it very much. Thank you Andrew. Ps. This Shell station racks in the bucks because of dumb people like myself who did not heed the winter storm warnings or the 10,000 signs that told me I will need chains for my tires. Anyway, I was mildly irate having to stop and pay the $70 for the chains and the $20 to get someone to put them on, but it was a good experience, people were friendly and the station has some really cool posters and old photos to look at as I waited in line for an hour behind the countless others like me who thought "eh it's just a little snow". I'm grateful for them stopping me for the chains as there was no way my little Corolla would have made it! read more

Stopped here Monday morning 7/10/2017 around 6:30 am to get snacks and bait for fishing trip to Donner. Did not see any baskets so had to put stuff on counter, Clerk started ringing up my stuff before I was done, when I asked where stuff was he looked at me like I was stupid. I don't tolerated that kind of attitude, prices were way too high. Gas prices are outrageous, do yourself a favor and buy gas in Auburn or Reno BEFORE crossing the mountains. No need to stop here ever, they have nice toilets on Donner Pass rest stop 20 miles eastbound and Gold Run rest stop is just 13 miles westbound. I won't be stopping here again. read more

Had a little problem with this place. Besides being very rude and unhelpfull they sold me the wrong size chains. Never having needed chains before I didn't know. Anyway went up the road, had to stop to put them on. There was a very nice cal-trans person there and he attempted to put them on for me. Well guess what they wouldn't fit. They were to small. With the help of the cal-trans person I was able to get turned around. He led me down the hill back to this rip off place and with his help I returned the chains and got a full refund. I will never stop at that super ripoff place again even if I have to pee, will stop alongside the road before stopping there again. read more

Lesson, when you buy the chains, go to your car and read the tire size again on your car. MAKE SURE they are the correct size for the actual tire you have on your inadequate Pruis or whatever you are driving over Donner Summit. When we got home, our son informed us that he had dropped his PS game in the snow.....I called the Nyack Shell hoping someone found it and turned it in, someone did!! There is a place high in the mountains just off the mountain pass that is snowy when no other place is snowy. At this magical place you can procure fuel for your chariot, foodstuffs for the journey ahead, liquid refreshments, trinkets in the native motif and items bearing the crest of the regional governing body. There is land for chariots of great size and I'm told the King of Burger himself resides at this place. Come hither, wayward traveler and find thy respite. read more

I hate to see all these negative reviews of this place. I see people complaining about the Porta Potties they have, but I have never even noticed them--there are actual restrooms in the building that have always been clean and well stocked, or relatively so. For the last eleven years, I have been commuting every two weeks or so from Reno to Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties. I always plan on stopping here either en route to or from the Central Valley. Their store--recently remodeled, by the way--has everything a traveler might need to survive a trip up and down the Sierra. I choose to stop here because it is very easy to get on and off the freeway at this exit. I very seldom eat at the attached Burger King, but the couple of times I have eaten there I have had no complaints or problems. read more
