In early 2021 they changed their policies and no longer accepted makeups for missed sessions, and also did not allow family members to use any of the extra sessions (which they had previously allowed) We must have missed the new update to the policies. In January of 2021, my sister in law passed away from cancer. She left behind two boys, my nephews, ages the same as my own. Long story short, we missed many of our classes during our time in mourning and supporting our family. When we did get back to resuming our sessions, we were disappointed, frustrated and shocked to find out that my nephews were not allowed to use the countless credits for classes we had racked up. In disbelief, I spoke to the General Manager, Micky, who refused to let my nephews jump into classes with my kids, "because the policies changed" and "because my nephews were not registered at The Little Gym". ***Keeping in mind, my nephews USED to be allowed to use our credits even though they were NEVER registered with The Little Gym. In further disbelief, I contacted the OWNER of The Little Gym in TriBeCa, including the memorial service info and tributes about my late sister in law who had passed away, in our communications. The owner said he was 'sorry, but would not make any exceptions despite the extra ordinary circumstances'. My hope is that after reading this, parents will stop wanting to continue to support this awful place.

The classes are small -- at most 4 kids, each with a…read morecaregiver, but most weeks we have been just 2 or 3 pairs -- so we get a lot of attention and individualized guidance. This allows for a calm, warm environment. Kendall has been a wonderful teacher. Due to her getting injured, we've had a few substitutes. They've all been wonderful, and each has emphasized different skills and brought a fresh approach with my child. We are so grateful for this place. We also like all of the staff, who are warm and friendly. My 2 year old knows them all and looks forward to seeing them each week. They have now updated their policy to allow for one make-up lesson per month. This is really great -- especially during cold and flu season. I took one star off because the changing room is a bit awkward and the floors could be kept cleaner. It's a co-ed locker area, with some private shower stalls and private changing rooms, but the showers and changing rooms are at opposite ends of the locker area. The built in locks on many of the lockers don't work or are stuck on lock position. It's all good, definitely not a reason not to bring your kid here, and we make it work. (By contrast, we had taken our older child to the JCC at this age: it was crowded, loud, followed a script that couldn't accommodate different kids' needs. We kept trying with the JC summer camp for 2 years, and he still can't swim! It turned him off swimming and only now, at age 8, is he starting to warm up to the idea of learning to swim -- mainly because his younger brother is loving it.)

They are also very good at keeping the parents in the loop - many texts, emails at the end of each camp session, weekly Zoom meetings, and calls when necessary. I became curious because I've been thinking about preschool options for my daughter, so I decided to stop and observe for a few minutes. I parked the stroller and sat on a bench some distance behind the group. The children were about to play together, and I simply wanted my daughter--who is almost 11 months old--to watch other little kids having fun. I thought it would be a lovely experience for her. Unfortunately, it didn't feel welcoming. The teachers seemed very young, and I sensed from their expressions and body language that they wanted us to leave. Trusting my instincts, I quietly left. As we walked away, my daughter kept looking back. She didn't understand what had happened. The experience made me a little sad. I was once a teacher myself, and I always believed that kindness, patience, and making people feel welcome are just as important as teaching lessons. Children learn not only from what we say, but from how we treat others. I hope every place for young children is filled with warmth, inclusion, and compassion. A school should be a place where the next generation learns to embrace others--not to make them feel excluded. Every child deserves to grow up in an environment where they feel surrounded by kindness, love, and a sense of belonging.
