Thank goodness the NYC Ferry continues to service rides to Rockaway Beach since I wouldn't take the MTA. Besides, it's a gorgeous, scenic ride about 50 minutes from Pier 11 /Wall Street. A recent trip ($4.50 one way) to Rockaway Beach, long lines included was hassle free and enjoyable especially on a gorgeous summer day. But the ferry isn't perfect. On a few occasions, they're known for not sticking to the time schedule. This happened yesterday. Aiming for the 5:57 PM vessel to NYC, the ferry boarded all passengers and took off at 5:36! We were lucky to arrive earlier. Overall, the NYC Ferry offers rides around Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and I think Throg's Neck (check destinations on schedule). In reference to a Yelp-related discussion with my father, I have discovered the identity of the Surly Guy and IT WAS ME! To quote the Fonz my precious rating was wr-wr-wr-wr. The machines could be more numerous and less broken, but this a great low-cost scenic option. From Wall Street, the East River option offers a great assortment of bridge and building, while the South Brooklyn choices provide great harbor views. The layout and signage could be better since this spaced is shared with NJ ferries. read more

I LOVE the new boats at NYC Ferry. I just took one last week to Governor's Island and it was so darn clean, smooth and comfortable. The boats always leave on time, the staff are quite chill and the views are impeccable (especially from the top deck). It's also dog friendly, bike friendly and electric scooter friendly! Busy Saturday at the Brooklyn pier. With a massive line and a strict timeline to get back to Manhattan, I specifically asked the NYC Ferry employee if we would make it onto the next boat. She assured me, 'Yeah, sure, no problem, there's plenty of room.' We bought our tickets and waited approx 20 minutes, only to miss the cutoff by 30 to 40 people. When I pointed out that her misinformation cost us crucial time, she just shrugged and offered another vague 20-30 minute wait. Because of the delay, we had to ditch the ferry entirely and scramble to the subway. To top it off, we're now stuck with unusable tickets since all sales are final. Mistakes happen, but this felt like flat-out indifference--telling passengers whatever keeps the line moving rather than accurate info. It's not the end of the world, but it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. In vain I contacted customer service only to get a 'all sales are final' despite our employees blatantly giving you incorrect info. Do better, NYC Ferry. read more

It's fun to take the ferry on a nice day! Sometimes it's on time, sometimes it's over 20 minutes late... but typically it's very clean on board and once you actually get on everything goes smoothly. They sell snacks and drinks on board, though I don't think I've seen anyone take advantage of that. read more

Could be a little cleaner and more organized , the bathroom is a bit of a mess :( and the employees never know which ferry goes where and from which gate , so that could caribe a bit better too . Wow very rude of all of you who left less than 5 stars! For less than $3 per ride you can transfer anywhere you like for 90 minutes, from the beaches of Rockaway up to the Bronx. Superior to any tourist dinghys. Most affordable way to catch a sunrise or sunset along the skyline. read more

We got on on Roosevelt Island after riding the tram to the island and we hopped on and off at different points. Had lunch at Dumbo market. Ever since they change the announcement volume to deafening loud it's been awful to ride. They should just use the front tv screen to show what station their approaching and currently at, and passengers should absolutely pay attention. Otherwise service never comes at the schedule time it's usually off by 10 minutes for all the lines and they sometimes wait on the transfers but I wouldn't hold my breath you just hope you get there before the ferry you need to transfer too is there. Line management also is usually a complete mess especially on 34th street, since people who are transfering are sometimes told they have to wait on the massive queue, which is unfair because your transferring. But it's better than taking the subway sometimes to Queens or Brooklyn at times, which is why I am not giving it two stars. read more

I bought tickets for a group of people yesterday, planning on bringing 2 bikes on board. The crew member tells me they are almost full capacity for bikes, so only 1 bike can come on, and denied my boyfriend boarding (as they had no room for his bike). This is after the 5 boro bike tour so we are exhausted and I have my parents with me, so my boyfriend gives me the last spot for the bike. I board with my parents and right behind me another passenger boards with a bike. Obviously confused and upset I ask to the crew how they were able to get on if my boyfriend was denied entry because they had no more room for bikes. The crew says they allowed another passenger because they "found room". I asked them why they didn't let my boyfriend on instead of this passenger who was behind us in line and was now at 9/8 capacity. Obviously this crew does not care for rules and bends them when they like. I reached out to NYC ferry customer service for a refund on the ticket that I was forced to activate (and then denied service) and rep from NYC ferry told me it is non refundable but they will be using my feedback to fix their boarding process with bikes. Well this does not help me one bit, and the best part the crew member even admitted that they had denied my group member boarding and that there was nothing they could do. (his team member) told him to not stress about it as "it happens all of the time" (yes I heard that said while I was walking up to them asking them how the refund process works, I don't think they saw me coming when they said this). I hope this feedback does help change the process and their bad customer service but honestly highly doubt it. If anyone wants some NYC ferry tickets let me know as I won't be using them anymore after this terrible customer service experience. read more

The NYC Ferry is the best way to travel. It is clean, relatively on time (worst case about 5 min delays), and beautiful. They are dog friendly and very kind to my dog! We usually take it so she can go to different dog parks. The only negatives are the price and the Dumbo port. Price wise, it's $4 BUT if you buy the 10 ticket pack, it's only 2.75 per ticket! That is less than the subway or bus. The Dumbo port is slightly confusing and always have long lines. I've been riding the ferry for years and still have to ask for assistance. Have tried ferry on multiple occasions. The stop in Sunset Park is very close to my home. So before I leave work like to check MTA trains on weekend. As we all know the MTA trains suck. Always undependable and higher risk of assault or injury. Like the police have stopped working. So I tried Rockaway ferry which is very convenient and fast. Only 1 stop from Wall Street berth. Omg I am only coming home from work. But on weekends the line is crazy because everybody headed to the beach. So then I take Bay Ridge boat which makes a few stops before Sunset Park. Overall not bad, very reliable, no crime to speak of, cleanliness meh could be better. But hey its the best $2.75 you can spend with a decent view. read more

I don't understand how people can complain about the ferry system, which takes you to places such as Williamsburg, DUMBO, Rockaway Beach, Astoria, and (the difficult to reach any other way) Red Hook, Brooklyn. There are well organized lines for each ferry. There is a spot where you can get food, drinks, and hang out at tables inside to relax while you wait at the main pier (Wall Street, Pier 11). The ferries are large, lots of seating. Seating inside if you want it cool and shady. Seating up top if you'd like to see the view and catch some sun. A one way pass is four dollars and can really get you to places that aren't as accessible by subway and are way too expensive to take a ride-share to. You can get a 10 ride pass for 27.50, though those passes expire 90 days after purchase. A ride can be up to 120 minutes long and is good for transfers within the ferry system. You DO have to get off when you reach the end of a line. There are ticket machines at the pier, but it's easier to download the app on your phone to purchase/activate tickets. The app also shows you the schedule and tells you which ferry to take to get where ya wanna go. Oh! And the ferry has a snack and drink bar. You can even scan a QR code, order from your seat, and get a notification to pick it up. There are bathrooms on board. The ferries are clean. Stop the ferry system slander! read more

I will say I have never heard of such a thing. A ferry with a bar that picks you up in multiple pre determined locations and brings you to other locations of interest. The cost is only $4 per person. The views from the ferry are amazing. The best location is the rear of the ferry as you can take close up and long shots. The cityscape was beautiful. read more

It appears the taxpayers have been footing the bill to operate the ferry system. In order to raise millions, (they think they're going to) they increased the cost to ride. I have been riding the NY ferry up and the East river for about 7 months. Sometimes I'm slow pulling up my ticket on the app. Everyone has been patient up until Nov 19 @ 5:30. I experienced a very impatient staff who insisted I get off the ferry because they assumed !!! I was treated badly as I tried to pull up my ticket. I was embarrassed and chased around the boat and to my seat where I finally was able to use the app. I tried to explain but, the young man and young girl chased me. After the app forced me to buy a 10 pk. Three people came after me. I complained to a very big person, maybe the supervisor, as I walked off at my Astoria stop. I complained to this young girl who assumed I didn't have the fare. I told them all that it was my fault for not wearing my Desert Storm Army Veteran hat. Major hidden gem alert. You can take this ferry to Rockaway Beach for $2.75 each way and it's so lovely. You get a beautiful view of downtown while enjoying the cheapest ferry ride around. If you're in the city, definitely avoid taking the A there and try this route. It amplifies the experience so much! Download the NYC Ferry app, buy your ticket online (it takes a minute), and activate it when you're on the line. The schedule is on there, too. Once you take the ferry, you take a free shuttle on the other side, which takes you to whatever stop you desire at the beach. I don't think there are bathrooms available on the ferry, so plan ahead on your way there. It's an hour-long ride. There's an upstairs and downstairs - I recommend up! Beware though: it may be delayed. On our way back, the ferry was delayed forty-five minutes. read more

September 3 was a very busy day at Pier 11, especially at 1:30PM, when boats were docking and embarking and hundreds of people were waiting on different lines. Most of the nyc ferry employees were very helpful and polite. But at least one "person" seemed impatient and shouted to those on line to get ready, which seemed unnecessary, Worse than that, a tall man wearing a fancy designer belt buckle and loosely tied half boots, who appeared to be a manager, walked around and arranged some of the nylon line separators. He seemed curt, without any sense of congenial body language. What particularly bothered me was the impolite way he gave orders, one of which was to an elderly couple to stand in line under the strong sun, when they were able, at no inconvenience to anyone, to stand in the shade. It appears that a few (and only a few) of nyc ferry personnel need some training in dealing with the public. Lastly, on one of my rides, a couple boarded late along with a huge e-bike. As the guy tried to enter the cabin WITH his bike, he was stopped by staff who informed him that he had to leave it on the front deck. My concern is if an e-bike caught fire at the location where passengers board and exit, during a fire it might seriously impede their egress from the boat. I therefore recommend that e-bikes be banned from passenger ferries. read more

People have places to be and it took way too long for ferry to come.
