My fears were immediately quelled when we picked him up from the bus after camp had ended. Coach Moore is fantastic! He challenges and encourages the players to strive to be their best. He gives them feedback on ways to improve and he really breaks things down so they can understand. A true teacher! I was especially impressed when I learned the organization provides a bus to take players/families to/from games. This would certainly have been a FIVE star review if the certification process wasn't soooo long. When I first heard that an indoor turf facility was opening in Williamsburg, I contacted the owner…read moreabout starting a women's league which turned out to be a terrible experience (more on that below), but first, a few notes on the facility: The field is tiny. 5 v 5 games are super tight and the ball is constantly ricocheting off players. The walls are padded which helps prevent injury, but then the ball doesn't actually bounce off the walls, instead it often ends up dying near them. The turf is enclosed with a net which makes me feel like I'm in a cage. My knees always hurt after playing there--makes me wonder, what's underneath the turf? Pickup games run $15/hour which is a lot more than other pickup games in the city. Meetup.com has dozens of cheaper options if you're looking. My experience playing in a league here was truly awful. As I mentioned, I contacted the co-owner about starting a women's league. He said he had plans to start one and asked me to help spread the word. I contacted all of the women's leagues I've played in in NYC. Registration opened in December and my squad quickly paid our dues ($180/player--around $40-30 more than the usual league fees). The start time was pushed back several times because they had trouble securing teams. One of the staff told me that the league was going to be canceled but then a few hours later we were told we could have an exhibition match in two days if we wanted to, which was very confusing. At that point, a lot of us had already made plans--especially since we were told the league was most likely being canceled. A few days later, we were told that 2 more teams had registered, and I found out via the coach and players on these teams that they were given reduced rates. Some of the players allegedly did not have to pay at all. I asked the co-owner about this and he promised me in an email that "all players will pay the same fee at the end of the day." At this point, they should have refunded our league fees and set up an all-women's pickup to drum up interest in the league, but this didn't happen. The night of our first match, the co-owner asked the team if we would be OK moving games up to 7PM (games were supposed to start at 7:30). We told him that we wouldn't be able to make an earlier start time so he agreed to stick to 7:30. A few days later, they posted the rest of the schedule and it turns out some of our games would start at 7 which would mean some of our players might miss close to half of the games. I wrote the co-owner an email asking if he could adjust the schedule and when one of his staff replied, a very rude email written by the co-owner was included in the exchange: Can you calm this person down tonight, once and for all!? Also: please don't be apologetic to her at all! I read through your emails to her and she is the sort of person who seizes upon hemming and hawing and apologies. Be firm. Not impolite. But firm. At this point, I asked for a refund because I no longer felt welcome playing in a facility owned by a person with such a poor opinion of me. While I'm willing to give a new business some leeway while they sort out how to communicate with customers, The Pitch's policies re: dealing with customer's issues are very unprofessional. The co-owner later followed up with an email in which he refused to apologize for what he said--he only apologized that I had to see his email. He also said that I had misunderstood his terminology because he was using "the British way of saying to sort something or someone out." (Note: this person is not British and anyone who has spent time with the British knows that apologizing is a very British thing to do.) The Pitch has refused to give me a refund and thus I am out $180. When I entered a team into the league, I brought with me 7 paying players, and the other teams that registered came from one of the leagues I reached out to. In the end, my efforts meant very little to The Pitch. Despite the fact that they do not think I am entitled to a refund, I have been told that they also will not let my team bring in a sub without the sub paying a pricey registration fee and $10/match. Long story short, don't waste your time and money at The Pitch. NYC has tons of parks and green space where you can play soccer for free or for a very affordable price.

Don't listen to the review before mine because it is full of complaints with no merit. The field is not tiny (especially for an indoor turf field), the ball does bounce off the wall (maybe you just have a weak leg), every turf field has beads under it (former college football player, it's a fact), and, yes, the field is caged so that the ball doesn't fly off the field (if you are playing indoors anywhere, you are technically caged, but then again that's besides the point because the whole post was full of misstatements). Sounds like a salty person who makes generalizations about everything, including all British people being apologetic, and doesn't look at the facts. I wouldn't have taken the time to write my review or defend The Pitch against the other review if the place wasn't worth it. I have truly enjoyed playing here and recommend it for anyone, including women. The ownership is great and refunded me when a pickup game got cancelled. Really happy I found The Pitch and it has made my move to Brooklyn awesome.

If you're considering soccer at Sternberg Park, save your money and start your own amateur league. You won't be wasting $150+ per person for Goals that blow away in the wind Fields marked by crooked plastic cones A referee who doesn't move and can't see the game An automated phone line that never connects you to a person "Weather updates" that are completely inaccurate A league that lets certain players jump from team to team A referee who plays favorites and dismisses legitimate complaints based on your accent. If you're considering signing up for Volo Sports NYC's Sternberg Park soccer league, DON'T. It's a rip off, a disorganised mess, and borderline corrupt. Our team showed up to play one night only to find the field covered in snow. Despite this, we were ready to play. The Volo referee and rep on-site told us it was too dangerous and the game was rescheduled. We did not refuse to play we were sent home. A few days later, Volo dug themselves into a hole by claiming our team "chose not to play" and that all games had gone ahead as scheduled. This was either a blatant lie or something even worse the referee deliberately sent us home while allowing other games to go ahead. We also raised concerns about the referee's ongoing bias against our team, especially after he made comments about our accents. This was completely ignored in Volo's responses, they outright refused to even address it. Volo's customer service is beyond useless. Their phone line is fully automated, forcing you to press option after option only to end up in a loop with no way to speak to a human. The weather hotline was also completely wrong, claiming all games were going ahead despite the fact that their own staff told us not to play. It took multiple emails for them to finally admit their mistake and reschedule the game. Instead of owning up immediately, they tried to gaslight, dismiss, and blame us. The volo rep is a nice guy, but the referee, an absolute disgrace. From the start, he had it out for us, making dismissive comments, telling us to "calm down" and shut up if we made loud calls to our own players in game. Other teams roster manipulation was a regular occurrence. Despite Volo doing a roll call before each game, the ref encouraged teams to bring in ringers and some of his own friends while acting like we were the problem for playing competitively. The second anyone points out that it's possible he may not be able to see everything by standing in one place you get threatened with a yellow card. I regularly come home with ankle cuts and bloody knees from other teams player but the referee claimed our team calls foul when any sort of physical tackle is made, it's a contact sport, the game is gone. Instead of rewarding teams that show up with full rosters, they create an environment where teams are better off showing up short handed so they can get a "ref approved" ringer subbed in. It's an absolute farce. Despite the referee's blatant attempts to stop us from making the playoffs, WE STILL DID. That's how much of a joke this league is even when they tried to manipulate the season against us, we still made it. Volo Sports NYC is not just overpriced, it's a scam. They take your money, deliver a subpar, borderline rigged experience, and then try to gaslight their own paying customers when called out. The lack of integrity, fairness, and basic customer service is shocking. One of the so called "perks" of the league is discounts at a bar. Except the bar is a mile away from the field, and the discount is literally just $1 off after you pay full price first. That's not a benefit, that's an insult. If you're looking for a well run, professional, and fair soccer league in NYC look elsewhere. I give them 1 star only because their volleyball league is pretty awesome and I'm happy to admit it.

If we had been more than two people, we probably would have had to split up. Now to the action, Gotham Girls Roller Derby is no f*cking joke. These girls are out to bust some asses. You see, most Equinox locations I have visited either the main studio is tucked away partially from the gym's floor visibility or has a wall to make it a bit more private. I felt like the main studio at the Williamsburg location everyone from all angles can see you workout. The yoga studio is downstairs. Right across from the women's locker. Would have been nice if the main studio was situated the same as well. My guess is depending what time you visit will depend how less crowded or crowded it is. Personally, I have zero complaints about this location. My only complaint is I dislike those numerical combination lockers.
