This grand opening and renovation has been showing up on my newsfeed for the past month or two and I finally came for open play today... and while the price was great $10 for 2 hours (during grand opening week) however Velto was not it. We came with a large group of friends (20+ people) and practically booked out the open play several times that they ended up opening up more slots and courts for it, everyone knew everyone.. literally. However the lady working there kept barking orders into the speaker phone every other shot that it was so hard to focus on games itself. First of all this is open play not boot camp, second of all we are all friends. There's no reason to be dictating which courts which person should play on... after nonstop barking into the microphone for the first 15 min straight it just killed the whole vibes. We alI just wanted a moment of peace and silence to focus on our games. Everyone i came with echoed the same thoughts. While i understand that 6 people per court allows for the best rotation, some people rotate courts so that they are not stuck playing the same people the whole time (at least that's how it is in every other locations open play) the lady was like YOU CAN NOT HAVE MORE THAN 2 paddles queueing at once... if we don't mind waiting an extra game and we are fine waiting an extra game or two... does it matter if there's 2 stacks queue? The other courts would have no wait and they can play back to back games.... what's the issue? We are all friends there and she was aware that we knew each other from the beginning. Cons: #1 the lady and her damn speakerphone telling us not to piss her off (like.... lol?), the court absorbs the bounce, the back two courts have a weird slope that you are practically running up a slope after serving or if you are running backwards to try to hit a lob you need to watch your footing cause of the uneven ground.. one of my friend tripped and ran into the wall cause of the slope. This is kinda surprising cause I was watching videos on my feed of them digging up the floors and laying new flooring etc. The overhead lighting blinds you, the kitchen and the court is the same color and the lighting makes it hard to see if a ball is in or out cause everything is the same color. There is no water fountain. Pros: although the temperature didn't work for me I appreciate that they had the heat on and was not cheap with the heat, I just wished that it was lower cause on the back court it hits you in the face every time you pass the mid court. there was ample seating around the courts and I can appreciate that they put effort into the aesthetics with the plexi glass and there is a locker area and vending machines incase any one was hungry or thirsty. note to management- explain the rules in the beginning of open play and then just let everyone have fun. there is no reason for your workers to be interrupting the games and barking orders every 5 min

The vibe was weird from the moment I stepped onto the roof. There was man sitting on the edge of the front desk with my yoga instructor and it wasn't clear if he was an employee of Cosmic or the hostel; he was smoking a blunt and kept talking about how chill the vibe was but didn't make me feel chill. It wasn't a real conversation, he kept telling me to relax, to look at all the people and see how relaxed they were, and every time I tried to speak he would talk over me with more stoned nonsense. I just wanted to check in, so I put my phone onto the table and made extended eye contact with the woman instructor. She asked for my name and email, which I did NOT want to give with this weird rando hovering close enough to touch me. I smiled and held up my phone, and she asked again. Great looking out. I reluctantly gave my info, took a yoga mat as far from anyone as possible, and got myself set up. I got up to use the bathroom, and the same man asked, "Leaving already?! Where you goin?!" To the bathroom dude, I'm going to empty my bladder, please leave me alone. The yoga area is separated from the lounge area for hostel guests, and during the class it became clear he wasn't an employee of Cosmic, but just a random dude who decided to insert himself into the class and the instructor wasn't able to control him. He was dancing in the lounge section by himself, periodically yelling things like, "Release the dragon!" It was annoying and out of place. The instructor started the class with "Well now that summer is almost over" and the audible grown from the people there facing another COVID winter with new mask and vaccine mandates was enough to make her backtrack and say, "We're at the height summer". Don't start a class with negativity like that. As for the yoga itself, the sound system they used had some feedback and quality issues, the roof isn't flat but has lumps and curves that make lying flat or balancing on one foot extremely challenging. The instructor seemed like she was still getting her sea (roof?) legs with her routine, direction, and confidence, which I don't mind, everyone starts somewhere and she was making an effort, that's what counts to me. What was less comfortable was encouraging people to video and photograph and tag the gym on social media during the class. On the one hand, this is how businesses get promoted. On the other, I don't want dudes getting up to take "promotional videos" of my downward dog that I didn't consent to. Also, can we please put the phones away for a YOGA CLASS, if no where else, and unplug during this time? Maybe the biggest disappointment besides the creeper was the fact that they didn't schedule their class to coordinate with the sunset, the surrounding buildings block it. We had 15 minutes of sun before it set behind the buildings and a chilly shadow descended on the roof. So.....this wasn't a sunset yoga class, this was a post-sunset/twilight yoga class. Not what I would have signed up for. I'm giving three stars only because this is not a review for the venue itself, they had to work with the hostel who didn't build their roof for yoga and who don't have control over what their guests do (if the dude was even a guest, I really don't know). But I really hated my experience.

Fully staffed on a Sunday and the workers were very welcoming and helpful. The pool here is spectacular. (Photos while patrons are in the pool ate strictly prohibited) so I was able to grab one quick pic before swimming classes started. Lockers are the more modern type with codes so you don't have e to bting a lock like some older rec centers require. Family bathroom/change rooms so parents with little ones can assist is a plus. Gym equipment was plentiful at the time we visited. I like the indoor walking track. Full calendar of events from dance, workouts, swim lessons etc . You're bound to find something to interest you. Media rooms and after school activities for kids. Indoor basketball court. Facility indoors and out very clean. It's new and I hope they upkeep this building. There's no car parking lot so street parking is the only option. Bike parking available Trains and buses are very close by so that's a plus. My favorite thing about NYC Park rec centers is membership cost- Free for kids and young adults up to 25 years and the very affordable rates for adults and seniors.
