All of the food was extremely fresh. The service was good as well. We have two complaints: 1. The seating area inside is really like a cafeteria. The ambience could be a little more welcoming. We opted to sit outside on the covered porch which was an improvement. 2. There is no view of the water but instead we looked at a cluster of industrial buildings. Overall, we recommend going when in the area.

Picked up some fresh oysters in the Shell to prepare on grill for dinner. The oysters were not real big but they were pretty fat inside, much better than what I had gotten from Kellum Seafood back in Virginia. I also picked up some fresh Black Sea Bass. The oysters were very good and Sea Bass excellent. I still will not buy Crabs from them because of our previous bad experiences, note, I said experiences as in plural. When I brought it to the managers attention, he said that the quality of the Crabs were not his problem, he takes what they sell him. So I get my hard shell crabs elsewhere.

My brother-in-law found O'Neal's Sea Harvest and we planned a lunch stop there while driving to the OBX. The restaurant looked somewhat unassuming from the outside but that didn't stop us! We walked in, ordered then grabbed a table on the front porch. I ordered the fried fish and shrimp basket with pickled beets and slaw. Hubby ordered the fried fish basket with onion rings and slaw. His brother ordered the soft shell crab basket with fries and slaw. Our sister-in-law ordered the fried fish basket with potato salad and slaw. Everyone absolutely loved their meal! The fried fish was flaky and super moist. The light batter was true perfection. Some of the best fried fish I've had. I throughly enjoyed the pickled beets, something not commonly seen on restaurant menus. The slaw tasted fresh, a little sweet and was chilled well. The fries were seasoned and crispy. To finish off a fantastic meal, we all shared a slice of the pineapple cake. Possibly the best item I've ever had with pineapple, it was so very delicious! So moist and flavorful with a nice amount of perfectly sweet, cream cheese icing. It was a truly spectacular meal start to finish! We would all highly recommend it.

What a gem! So glad we stumbled upon this quaint seafood market and lunch counter. It is our first trip to Roanoke Island and we have spent time exploring all the nooks and crannies. The village of Wanchese, on the south end of the island, is a quiet yet bustling working waterway. There is no effort spent attracting tourists. One would choose to visit Manchese to eat some of the freshest, most delicious seafood on the outer ands and to get a true sense of the commercial fishing industry. If we were staying longer, O'Neals would be our go-to seafood market. Everything in the counter was very recently swimming in the ocean and local waterways. You know that fishy smell many places have? You won't find it here. Fresh fish smells wonderful! The lunch menu is fixed with daily specials. My husband and I shared the fried shrimp and Frisch-of-the-day, drum, basket with coleslaw, fries and onion rings. There were many sides to choose from. The picture says it all...... lightly breaded, fried to perfection, light on the seasoning which allowed all the flavors of the seafood to shine. We purchased two frozen crab cakes to take home for dinner and made a second trip to the counter to buy a slice of homemade Oreo cake (a local islander makes cakes from her 70-year old grandmother's recipe.) perfect end to a most delicious lunch. The people are authentic and welcoming. The lunch crowd I a mix of island visitors and local fisherman. The indoor dining room is clean and open, with porch seating available. We will be returning here on all our trips!

The menu is pretty simple. The po boy that was pictured earlier was a special (unfortunately for me). They change specials daily and they don't know until 10 AM of that day what their specials will be. I forget what it was when I went October 1- but it didn't interest me. So, I went with their soft crab BLT. Fresh crab and yummy. I don't live nearby- so of course I had to get some souvenirs too - a cup and a long sleeve shirt (green)- because I have too many short sleeve white or black shirts. The lady who serviced me is very friendly. You have to order your food by 330 PM. They close at 4 PM. Wish they stayed open longer, but maybe they wouldn't have the demand?

Fresh off the boats, this fish market has a great variety of seafood. The people are friendly and the food is delicious. The smell inside is rough if you've never been in a fish market but there is seating outside.

Hard to find in Richmond so if I have a chance to get them, I jump at the chance. The special of the day was a flounder basket. I was able to substitute clam strips for other items, and the basket included a nicely sized piece of flounder (fish of the day), heaping helping of clam strips, fries, hush puppies, and slaw. "Beer of the Day" was $2.00! Wife got the cheesesteak sub with fries. All food--as they tell you when you walk in is fried--is fried. Totally OK with that and it was very, very tasty. Friendly staff, items mostly homemade, clean restaurant, a clear view of an honest-to-goodness working dock. Exactly what we were looking for for our last night in Manteo area. If you have not been to the Marina and Grill...please get there for a fun, tasty, almost entirely homemade meal at very reasonable prices, rubbing elbows with locals and people coming off of the fishing day, just adds to the charm to this slightly off the beaten path gem.

Yeah, it's that hard to find. Why? Because they are mostly a wholesale operation so retail customers are not big business for them. But if you find them, you will find an absolutely huge selection of local seafood - the largest we found anywhere in OBX area and we have been to almost ten seafood retail outlets. There are about 15 different kids of local fish (not stuff like salmon that are as local to OBX as they are to, say, Oklahoma) and tons of crabs. The prices per pound for the fish start at as low as $1 and change per pound. We bought #1 live blue crabs for $2 per pound - it's much less if you buy half a bushel or more. While we were there there was a 18-wheeler loading up to deliver a pallet of seafood somewhere. For a huge selection of very inexpensive, fresh, local seafood, Gray Beard's is it.

This year we got our crabs from Capt. Malc's (put your Dirty Dick's jokes away, thank you very much). Our order of a half bushel (about four dozen --- enough to feed 4-6 people) of number one Jimmy blue crabs were steamed fresh and perfect, timed to the very minute of our scheduled pick up --- a luxury indeed! Due to an unusually small gathering of relatives and friends, this was the first year we did not procure a bushel live blue crab and steam them ourselves in our rented beach cottage, a dinner-act that has become something of a tradition for my family. Putting the task into the hands of another had us both thrilled with the possibility of convenience as well as wary of the probability of disappointment. To put it in the plainest terms possible, Capt. Malc's donf*ckaround when it comes to doing blue crab so right that qualifies as magic to believe in. Eating on them steamin' hot 'n' seasoned crabs in the comfort of our beach house for a grand total of $50 while knowing that patrons of Captain George's restaurant across the street were likely paying as much PER PERSON for far inferior seafood almost gave the four of us something to talk about at the dinner table.
