We ate at Sugar Shack twice while we were on our outer banks vacation. This is a relative cheap eats (hard to find anything truly "cheap" on the outer banks nowadays) no frills place where you can either sit inside or outside at picnic tables. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. The menu has a wide variety of fish and seafood options with the usual sides such as onion rings (they are great!) and French fries. The platters come with Cole slaw and a side of your choice (from their list). Servings are generous. They serve beer on tap and in bottles. We had both the fried and the grilled (skewer) shrimp (a dozen big ones!) and the fried tuna. It is less expensive than the next door Sugar Creek Seafood Restaurant. But it serves up the same sound sunset water views, and you can walk on the dock, gazebo and pier after you eat! read more

We've been doing takeout from Sugar Shack for a number of years when we're in Nags Head. The fish is usually fresh and freshly prepared, perfect for a quick takeout dinner. This year, we were surprised to see an online ordering option which we quickly took advantage of. It was nice to be able to place an order online early in the day for a dinner time pickup, and other than a little confusion about menu options (which necessitated a quick call that easily resolved the confusion), the online ordering was easy. I arrived at the appointed pick up time, and was immediately told it would be 15 more minutes as they were in the middle of a rush. (The three young men working there were clearly working as fast as they could to fill orders!). In the meantime, I enjoyed checking out the small inside, complete with fresh fish displayed) and a walk around the surrounding dock. We finally got our order about 20-25 minutes after the requested time. After a five minute drive back to the house, we dug in. The fried entrees in our order were all good, except for an order of fried okra which still had some raw batter. The grilled entrees were okay, but overcooked, ranging from mildly overcooked to nearly inedible. Out of our nine entree orders, all were correct except for one which had an incorrect side. Overall, this was a disappointing experience from a place we've loved over the years. We'll certainly try again, but I hope for a much better experience. read more

Love the views, service is good. We ordered 4lbs of steamed Alaskan snow crabs. They were $28 a lb! At home in md we can get them for about $15! I wish they would put some apple cider vinegar in their pot though when they cook them. It really helps balance out the fishy taste. They also mixed in some king crablegs in our meal which I didn't care for considering I don't like them nor did I pay for those. read more

My mom needed a break from my dad so I took her for a ride up the island just, to get her out of the house. I'd been to Sugar Shack in the past and thought she'd enjoy lunch there. Unfortunately, her first impression was really bad. She is quite disabled and uses a walker. The handicap parking spaces weren't really paved, I'm not quite sure how to describe it but it was kind of a honeycomb of concrete with the holes filled with sand. Getting her walker over it was nearly impossible, though somehow, we managed. I had to pull out and pick her up in the center of the parking lot on our way out. Also, the handicapped ramp was rather steep and was difficult for her to get up. While significant, I'm glad to say that this was the only glitch during our visit. The indoor seating area is small but there is plenty of room outside on picnic tables. You order at the counter - the menu is on a chalkboard but they also have printed menus if you'd like. We were told the fish of the day then given a couple of minutes to decide. I opted for the shrimp and flounder with okra and my mom stuck with just the flounder with fries. Both of us were thrilled with our meals. My mom's meal had two pretty good size filets, a giant pile of fries and some slaw. The fish was fried up perfectly and the fries were different in a really good way - I'm not sure if you'd call them battered or what, but they were soooo crispy and absolutely delicious. The slaw was fresh and crispy and a nice complement to the meal. My meal came with one filet and a good portion of nice size shrimp. They also were just right. The okra was fried crisp - no hint of sliminess that you sometimes get with okra. Next time though, I was going to be sure to order those wonderful fries. We finished our lunch and continued on with mom's break from dad. But, that's not the end of my Sugar Shack story. The next day, I had to leave my beloved Hatteras and head back home. I was all packed up and I planned on grabbing lunch on my way off the island. I was driving right past Sugar Shack so my lunch stop was a no brainer. This time i ordered a shrimp plate. I can't tell you how many shrimp there were - I was going to count them for you but I was eating while driving so thought it better to just let that pass. The shrimp were awesome, they really were. And this time, I did get those extra crispy strips of potato we call fries. Everything was delicious. I hated leaving my family, I hated leaving Hatteras, but at least I did have a good send off. During my Yelp OBX exploration I discovered Sugar Shack, adding them to our 'must-try' after drooling over photos of their "Shack Attack Po Boy". When we arrived, the place was a bit mis-leading- first I worried I got the address wrong because we only saw the Sugar Creek restaurant, then when we found the shack upon entering we saw the fish market, but we finally located the menu, realized we were in the right place, and were able to order. I was super bummed to learn they had removed the Shack Attack Po'boy from their menu. I had to opt for trying the combo po boy offered (including only shrimp & oysters) with a side of slaw, corn on the cob, and an order of hush puppies appetizer. They had indoor and outdoor seating, we chose their gorgeous outdoor patio, overlooking the water. The sandwich was quite large, packed with freshly fried seafood. I thought they bun could have used some love (by either toasting it or adding more sauce smothered on) and the seafood could have had bolder seasoning, the sandwich was quite yummy but really relied on the yum yum sauce. The coleslaw was quite delicious, not too heavy on the mayo, the corn was super juicy and sweet, and the hush puppies were crispy, with a dense moist inside filling, not too greasy. Went out to dinner with family and out of 8 of us only one of us had a decent meal. My husband got the oyster poor boy and enjoyed it. My peel and eat shrimp was way over cooked. The buffalo shrimp did not have buffalo sauce but the same sauce as the poor boy. My granddaughters hamburger wasn't fully cooked. She said it was cold in the center. We stopped at the Sugar Shack on the recommendation of a local resident of Nags Head, and we are so glad we did. The raw oysters were varied in size and all were delicious. This was our first time trying Hatteras style clam chowder and I think it may no be my favorite style. There was lots of flavor with just a hint of heat. We followed with the fish and chips. The fish was white and flaky and crispy and not greasy or soggy at all. The chips were crisp and cooked to perfection. In addition to the tasty food, we appreciated the friendly and prompt service. Since the weather was chilly, we are inside; however, there was ample outdoor seating overlooking the sound. We ordered more food than we thought we could eat because everything looked so good. And we ate it all! We also decided to get steamed shrimp, a quart of the Hatteras clam chowder, and banana pudding to go, to pair with a large salad for dinner at home the next evening. Our dinner began with a cup each of the clam chowder and crab soup. Plenty of seafood with just the right amount of flavors broth and veggies. We then shared the calamari appetizer and the egg rolls. They were both hot, crispy yet not oily. Perfect flavors and such a nice complement to each other. Finally, she shared an entree of grilled shrimp and scallops wrapped in bacon with sweet potato fries and slaw. It really makes the difference when each item is made from scratch and served fresh. I usually take photos and they would have been mouthwatering; however, we were so hungry and the food was so delicious that it was half gone before I remembered the photos. The owner was relaxed and engaging, giving us the background on the business they bought and updated. His passion for what he does shows. We were bummed that they were closed Tuesday and Wednesday as those were our last two days on the island. Thus, our take-out decision. My family ordered the fried flounder and really liked it, it was coated with a light batter and fried to perfection. The sweet potato fries were outstanding, wish they had given more. So there's the Sugar shack where u can pick up fresh seafood and eat outside! Adjacent to it is the fine dining sugar creek (this review is NOT for that restaurant) We got calamari on special (which was good not chewy, clearly fresh), beer, lemonade, mahi bites, shack salad shrimp, and shrimp po'boy. Between the atmosphere and the food, I highly recommend! For the po boy, I recommend no tomato sauce but the bang bang sauce and shrimp stellar! Our waitress, Savannah, was wonderful. She was kind and attentive. The food was phenomenal. Highly recommend the salmon with risotto. HOWEVER, the ladies that do the seating need to be more conscious of where and how they seat people. We were a group of 7 and got squished into a 6-top table. I did ask if they had a better table for 7 was told no. As a I was sitting on one of the ends of the table my chair was CONSTANTLY being bumped from the back by not only the customers sitting at the table behind me but also by waitresses trying to SQUEEZE by with plates full of food. read more

Overall the food was fantastic. I ordered the combo po'boy and it was phenomenal. The sweet potato fries were some of the better ones I've had in a while. I also ordered the steamer special that had a dozen oysters cooked to your style and a half pound of shrimp. The oysters I got raw and were amazing! The shrimp is the only thing I wasn't impressed with. They were overcooked and not the best due to that. Overall I would 100% go back for the oysters and po'boy sandwich. read more

Couldn't taste the apples but something else was with the beets. I love beets but didn't care for this.
