I have to give the staff and all those dedicated volunteers 10 stars! For the President and co founder, Stephanie Ryan, and the Board of Directors, they don't deserve any stars. Concerned volunteers/donors have been voicing their concerns regarding the animals welfare and safety on Facebook. Every single comment and concern has been deleted and they have been banned from posting anything on the Oahu SPCA Facebook page. Some of left reviews which are still posted. I guess they can't delete those? It is the responsibility of the Oahu SPCA to provide a safe and healthy environment for the animals they rescue. This is not the case. There are too many animals and understaffed. With this situation, the animals are being neglected and not taken care of. The President, Stephanie Ryan, continues to bring in feral dogs and has no plan for rehabilitation for them. They are left in a kennel and no trainer is ever hired to work with these dogs, so they will never find a forever home. She puts the staff and volunteers safety in danger when they have to go into the kennel to clean or try and get them out for a walk. Dogs have been in their kennels for almost a year before anybody can get them out. This is clearly animal abuse. Stephanie Ryan feels that every walking space should be filled with a kennel/dog. The dogs are stressed as these kennels are so close together. The kennels are not strong ones so when the dog jumps the kennels get close to each other and the dogs start showing teeth and aggressiveness to each other. Clearly, the dogs should never be put in that situation. Stress brings on health issues! The shelter has not had any electricity since the end of May 2013. Hawaiian Electric turned of the power due to a very dangerous situation. There were live wires and the power should have never been hooked up. They said the shelter is lucky nobody was killed as it could have done a lot of damage! Since there is no electricity, fans cannot be turned on to help cool the shelter. Poor dogs/cats they had a rough summer with the miserable heat! The shelter is running a generator everyday as the main source of energy, which is not safe and must be a violation of what the fire department's code is. Stephanie Ryan wants to continue to house dogs in the back outside where it FLOODS. The dogs are in the cold and wet and FLOODED area when it rains. There is no drainage. She is aware of this situation and yet had men come and set up two more kennels this week in the already OVERCROWDED area. The shelter leaks so the dogs inside are vulnerable to flooded areas in their kennels and standing in water. The kennels are so tight together that they can't be moved from the leaks. Each time it rains and wind blows, parts of the roof fly off where holes become bigger and more leakage. I hope nobody ever gets hurt if EVER big parts of the roof fall in. The cats are now housed in the same building as the dogs. Its noisy with all the dogs barking all day. Four big kennels are shoved in a small area. Its hot and just a miserable area for these poor cats. Stephanie Ryan knows all of this but has done nothing to make sure these animals are safe. The air that the animals, volunteers, staff and the public have to breathe can't be good for their health. A shelter housing live animals should not be in the smack dab of Campbell Industrial Park. She has FIRED dedicated/long time/loyal volunteers for voicing their concerns. These volunteers spent countless hours and their own money helping to take care of the animals. She did not like what they had to say, so she asked them all to find other volunteer opportunities. Who would FIRE great people who care for these animals? Just because they were the voice for the animals? She is a bully and continues to bully her way regardless of the safety and welfare of the animals and the people. It is time for her to step down as President and let someone else who really cares about these animals and the community take over and help it succeed. The Board of Directors needs to resign as well, as they have been inactive for a very long time. Thanks to our community/donors/volunteers for keeping the Oahu SPCA afloat. The animals need us to be their voice. Their health is at stake and we owe it to these animals to do something about it. read more

A couple of years ago, we adopted a dog from the OSPCA. We were treated very well and are very happy with our dog. Recently, we decided it was time to add another dog to our family and went back to the OSPCA in hopes of finding the perfect new dog. Since our first encounter with this shelter, they have moved to a new location. We can't even believe it is the same organization! The shelter is now located in Campbell Industrial Park in an ugly broken down warehouse building where it is noisy, dirty, and, in my opinion, unsafe. I realize that financing an operation of this scale in this day and age is very difficult, but if you can't do better than this, the management should certainly consider scaling down the operation or going out of business and giving their assistance to other shelters in the area. Since its inception, the OSPCA has been able to get many dogs and cats adopted out or fostered and this is definitely a feather in its cap. However, I was appalled when I walked through the current facility and saw dogs still there that I had seen two years ago when they were at Barbers Point. In the publicity announcing the move to CIP, the president of the OSPCA stated something to the effect that the animals would be housed in such a way that they would be in a setting that would be rehabilitative and open. Walking around the new location, I was dismayed that the dogs didn't even have a small play yard. I asked a volunteer how the animals were exercised and was told that volunteer dog walkers had to take them out for individual walks each day; there was no open area where they could play around off leash and/or in groups. If the move had just taken place, I would be inclined to say "all in good time," but the move was, I believe, several months ago. Shouldn't a play area have been fairly high on the priority list for the well being of their dogs. We didn't go into the cat area, but just glancing toward the building where the cats are housed made us feel that the cats are no better off from this move than are the dogs. If an animal has to only spend a couple of days to a week here, I would say, okay, due to lack of funds, this is the way it must be. But to have dogs that have been housed at the OSPCA for more than a month (not to mention those who have been under the shelter's care for more than two years!!) leaves me praying that these animals can survive without the added emotional scars of being kept in such a disagreeable setting. read more

I am trying to help the Oahu SPCA but was told I need to work with the president and co founder, Stephanie Ryan. A couple other people have posted their comments on the Oahu SPCA's Facebook page as well. I believe Stephanie Ryan has deleted all of our postings. The shelter is in bad shape. We are trying to help these animals but have been totally ignored and our posts deleted. There has been no electricity since the beginning of summer, which was shut off by Hawaiian Electric. Come to find out there were lots of live wires and people could have been killed. The electricity was hooked up illegally. Dogs are kenneled outside where the live wires are. The dogs/cats were hot all summer long. The fans could not be turned on to help cool the shelter. The back area where dogs are kenneled floods so dogs are in standing filthy water. The shelter is over crowded. Dogs are side by side to each other. The kennels are rusted and falling apart. Parts of the roof keep flying off when there are heavy winds. The shelter roof leaks. The list goes on. I hope they find another location. I can't imagine the air that these animals, staff and volunteers have to breathe is any good for their health. The shelter is right in an industrial area -- Campbell Industrial Park. I was told that Stephanie Ryan, president and co founder, FIRED loyal/long time volunteers for speaking up for the animals. She did not like what they had to say and instead of addressing what was possible, she asked them to find other volunteer opportunities. Who FIRES volunteers who come on their own free time and spends days/countless hours working with the animals so they can find a forever home. Stephanie Ryan that's who! The staff and volunteers do a great job with what they have to work with. With a president and board of directors, you would think their priority concern are these animals but its not. The Oahu SPCA is understaffed and have way too many animals to take care of! Something has got to be done and it starts from the top. We are the voice for these animals and by turning our heads and walking away, we would be doing a huge disservice to these animals who deserve better. Without the community and volunteers, the Oahu SPCA would not survive! They need a new president and board of directors who CAN and WILL make a difference in these animals lives! read more

The Board is responsible for the state that the shelter is in, and they must be held accountable. Many employees, volunteers, and supporters are asking questions with the ultimate goal being to help the shelter animals. Our comments have been deleted and our profiles have been banned from commenting on their Facebook page. Many of us, both staff and volunteers, have been fired, for asking questions as well. At least I can make this review... Hard to put one star, when the staff and volunteers are some of the nicest and most dedicated, hardworking and loyal people you will ever meet... But the Board gets one star. Those that are active are in the board want an ego boost or a photo op; the others are silent... Are they still there? Did they get kicked out of the board? Do they not care???? I don't know. But I see something seriously wrong with the way the board operates, and their negligence is why the Oahu SPCA is in such bad shape. Yes, we need the community's support, but the community can't support a corrupt organization. Fix the issues within the board, and I guarantee, you will have plenty of support and volunteers and donors. When is your next board meeting? When was your last meeting? If you are voting on new board members or new employees, surely there will be minutes from those meetings? As well as documentation of proper voting and a majority rule. I personally would like to see the minutes and votes on recent board meeting. Show us you are making progress to get the Oahu SPCA moved to a suitable and SAFE location. And that the animals are being taken care of, is priority #1. Public Relations doesn't mean a thing if you as a board aren't doing even the bare minimum of making sure the animals have a suitable location, but the Oahu SPCA deserves far more than that. The employees and volunteers deserve more. Your donors and supporters deserve more, or they will give their support or donor dollars to an organization that actually listens to and appreciates their most loyal people and always strives to improve. The Oahu SPCA is stagnant. Please spend less time on the cameras and do what is actually important. There are lives at stake here, and it's pathetic to find out that the board is more worried about their popularity and self image. read more

Even though the adoption fee is a bit higher than others I really wanted to support this location since it is no kill. My wife and I came and visited a dog we saw online and were interested in adopting on a Saturday. The location is pretty bad it looks run down and dirty but I put that out of mind because it was a no kill shelter probably operating on a low budget. We spent a half hour visiting with he dog we were interested in, and my wife fell in lover with her instantly. After talking it over I decided that we should come back the following day to visit one more time then make a decision since this would be our pet forever. So we returned Sunday. After spending a hour with the dog on Sunday we made up our minds that this was the pup for us so we asked what to do next. The friendly volunteer said we needed to talk to the lady who handles the adoption process. This lady (who was not friendly or accommodating) said the next step is filling out a application then giving them time to look it over then they do a verbal interview. We immediately filled out the app and were told to come back the following Friday for a interview... They told us this was standard and that the dog would not be adopted. They would hold her for us. We didn't want the dog to be adopted so we asked if there was anyway we could interview that day. She said no the dog needed shots and was not ready to be adopted anyway so if we came back Friday she would be ready to go home with us. My wife called the very next day to make sure the dog would be held since we were both already pretty attached, and to check if it was possible she came in for a interview sooner than Friday. She was told the dog was adopted that morning. When I asked how that is possible since we were told you have to wait for your application to be reviewed then do a interview I was told someone came in that morning spent 15 minutes with the dog filled out a app then was interviewed 10 minutes later and took her home... So my experience at the Oahu SPCA would best be described as heartbreaking. It felt like we were brushed aside as potential adopters by the unfriendly paid employees here and treated with kindness and patience by the non paid volunteers. If anything it should be the other way around. read more

I am saddened to see so many negative reviews about an organization that does so much with so very little resources and assistance.The Oahu SPCA is still in it's infancy. It's had it's growing pains as all new organizations have but not once has the care of the animals wavered .The mention of adopting out sick animals intentionally cant be true for the mere fact no shelter adopts any animal out with a complete health guarantee.No shelter can guarantee 100 percent an Animal they adopt out is 100 heAlthy.This includes all shelters even hhs.I also see mention of filth and bad smells. It's an animal shelter people - it's not going to smell like a rose garden and even in the most sanitary of conditions may still not look flawless as the shelter is housing animals.I was happy to see the Oahu SPCA has opened a low cost spay and neuter clinic to further assist in saving more lives through sterilization.Please understand their fees are higher than the humane society but it is just to cover care and veterinary expenses.The adoption fee does cover spaying,neutering,vaccines,deworming,microchipping,and any care incurred while with them.to my understanding,HHS has budget somewhere around 8 million while SPCA struggles with a mere couple hundred thousand a year to operate and care for the Animals entirely.SPCA cares for well over 200 animals daily with few staff and depend on a dedicated volunteer source.Once an animal is accepted into their program,they are part of their Obana for life.They only euthanize severely ill animals that can't be treated medically.The shelter may look like a prison to some but for most of these neglected animals it's the only home they've ever known.Please adopt from the shelters on Oahu . Whether it be SPCA or HHS.Either way you are saving a life. read more

I actually came across this place while I was seeking emergency services for my pet. I needed urgent care and they didn't have any immediate openings, but I booked an appointment anyway. Unfortunately, I ended up taking my dog to the vet hospital, paid about a thousand dollars, and was told the surgery he needed to save his life would cost me another $5000. I didn't have the money, couldn't get a loan, and sadly thought I would be spending my dog's final days by his side...Fast forward, I get a call two days later to remind me about my appointment. Just as I was going to cancel it since I thought he would have to be put down, in a final act of desperation, I asked the girl on the other end if they would see my dog with his condition for a consultation. When they said yes, I confirmed the appointment. Bless the staff and the doctor who are so compassionate, they fully explained everything, what my dog needed, and how much it would cost. I was shocked!!!! His operation was affordable!!!!! They took him in immediately, and I'm glad to say, he had his post-op appointment and is doing well! My gratitude to them for saving my dog's life? I will educate people about their service and their mission, give contributions to their agency so they continue to provide a valuable service to other animals, collect donations of items they may need, and if time permits, volunteer at the shelter. I read the other reviews, and maybe Oahu SPCA wasn't the right vet for those people with unfortunate outcomes, but for me, it worked. read more

I volunteer for the first time today and got to meet the people who are there day in and out. I was a little worried about volunteering there because I had heard such negative things about this place but I am happy that the rumors aren't true. The place looks run down that's true but the small group of staff they have are caring and work very hard to make this humble shelter a home for these homeless pets. I observed how people quickly judge this shelter by the standards if Humane Society but I can say that I was happy to see how they treated people bringing in a stray. With compassion and the woman also educated them. She couldn't take in the cats but willingly helped the family with options from seeking help from another place to giving them supplies to help care for the pet until it can be placed. I will definitely be back to volunteer and before you judge this place please volunteer so you can see what really goes on. The staff there especially that office lady gets five stars for their compassion and hard work. read more

Please don't take any cats to this shelter if they are not friendly. My brother and I witnessed them release a cat one day when we took his dog to get fixed on a Sunday. There was a lot of commotion as this cat they had taken in bit an employee. I then heard the girl say she said to release it. Next the cat was on a leash flipping around as she dragged it out of the door and into the parking lot and released it. Is that what they do? Take cats in and release them? Do people donate to this organization thinking its a no kill place? This is very disturbing to release the cat into a place that its not familiar Now another cat is in the neighborhood. Like any neighborhood needs more stray cats. A no kill rescue group? Sad! read more

I found these people to be very rude and didnt care about about the dog that I found, they turned him away knowing that he had no place to stay and said "I dont care I have 150 animals to take care of" with that kind of attitude you shouldnt be working at a rescued shelter, your mission to rescuing and re-homing is full-of-crap!! read more

Props to these guys for being a no-kill shelter, thus the star, but they are dirty, so unprofessional and at times down right rude. Stephanie and Jody continuously don't return calls, are nasty on the phone, and generally impossible to talk to. I wish there was another option for dogs on our island. read more
