There are so many beautiful and spirited dogs and cats to adopt. The cages are large with cots and seem clean. The staff were polite and were ready to help in getting the animals adopted. Adoption fees that I saw can run up to $300. I saw tortoises, guinea pigs available for Adoption also. There is ample parking in the front and rear of the facility. Clean and convenient bathrooms are nearby for humans. Please adopt or donate if you can. I had my eye on a cute dog. Hope u find the perfect pet here.

We adopted our precious doggo from HHS! We were helped by two staff (I think I remember their names were Madison and Lauren?), who went above and beyond to help make a last minute adoption happen by staying overtime on the eve of July 4! Our dog has heartworm disease and HHS generously covered costs of treatment (which includes sedation) through PACT, but there were a few concerning hiccups regarding veterinary care. She needed sedation for the heartworm injections, which required a signed consent form that I was not aware of. After dropping her off for the appointment, I received a missed call asking for verbal consent. I called them back and they said they already gave the anesthesia and she was doing well in recovery. (Alarming to say the least that they proceeded with treatment without consent). After returning home, we were given a sheet of paper regarding exercise limitations. When she started to experience side effects of her medications, I called frantically to inquire if we should bring her in. I was told if I read the many papers given at discharge, I would be aware the side effects are common and expected. She kindly apologized after I notified her that we only got one sheet of paper, so she emailed her paperwork to me afterwards. We've also been given the incorrect quantity of pills three times, so it was a little frustrating since I've needed to return to HHS three different times to get the correct amount of medications (no, I didn't count the pills while I was physically there because I trusted them, but after three times, I've learned my lesson/found an excuse to go see other dogs). My hope is that the veterinary care can improve some of the processes so owners and pets can be well taken care of! We understand that HHS and the staff are doing their best, so we are ultimately forever grateful to HHS and loving our life with our dog! Please kindly consider adopting from HHS, even if you're looking for specific breeds! I've seen Siberian huskies, German shepherds, Australian cattle dogs, Labrador retrievers, Pomeranians, and more! They often have "clear the shelter" events that can reduce the adoption fee by 50% or waive it completely!

I was a little hesitant to go to this place... maybe it's Hollywood movies that got this stigma about dirty and dingy places like this... BUT not this'd place. i was very pleased to see the animals in good condition and their environment, too... We got there on a saturday. So, im expecting this places to be super busy.. Yes, there were a lot of people. But, the place is massive. I didn't realize how big the property was. They have different sections for different types of animals. My favorite was cat section...

Visiting da doggies...... My beloved Makana crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few weeks ago, and I must tell you that I haven't really gotten over the loss yet. I find myself sometimes looking for him whenever I step outside of my door, only to see an empty doggie bed. Feeling a bit lonely at times without Makana, I figure I'd visit the doggies at the Hawaiian Humane Society. I haven't been to the Hawaiian Humane Society in years, as the past 28+ years of my life, two Golden Retrievers had kept me company & occupied my heart.. Now that both Goldens are gone, I may one day consider adopting a rescue instead? Although I am not mentally and emotionally ready to adopt yet, it was nice to visit the Hawaiian Humane Society to see the various doggies. I came across a very cute doggie today, and his name was Nathan. Although Nathan was a wee-bit shy, I loved his shy and mellow demeanor. After hanging out by Nathan's dog pen, Nathan slowly warmed up to me and even allowed me to pet him through the fencing. Lol! There are so many animals that need a good home. Instead of purchasing that purebred doggie, you may consider adopting one of these beautiful doggies from the Hawaiian Humane Society.

This was our first time to the Hawaiian Humane Society. I wanted my friend Janey to know what programs were available. I did get confused and found out that the Hawaii SPCA is the one that does the "take a dog for a day" program. BUT, they have a great Couch Crashers program where you foster for a week. Some of the dogs looked so sad. I wanted to take them all! But they look like they have enough food and water and a safe place to stay. Though I'm sure they really want their furever homes. But people should definitely come and look for a four legged fur baby, They have cats too! If you arrive and there's no parking in the front, go around to Kahena Street and you'll see additional parking. We didn't realize this until after sitting in the front lot for 10 minues.

We come to visit the Hawaiian Humane Society at least once a month. I take my daughter here to play with the animals. This location is big, they have a lot of animals there too. She loves playing with the kittens. The Staff and volunteers are really friendly. Everytime we leave, she always ask to adopt an animal. Maybe one day.

My boyfriend and I went to just look at the cats but we all know it's impossible to just look! We came across this sweet little kitten and it felt like he had chose us. He sat in our laps and slept like a baby! We have a 12 year old cat at home and felt like she needed a friend. We were guided through the adoption process by one of the kind volunteers. We appreciate all of the staff and volunteers who take such great care and provide so much love to these sweet animals. All animals deserve the most upmost love and care possible. We are forever grateful for the Humane Society and their ohana. Remember adopt don't shop!!

Hooray! It has been a long time in planning, but a parcel of land gifted in 2017 by D.R. Horton is under construction. The new 20,875sf campus will not only house six adoption pavilions, but will also include veterinary services for the shelter pets, an educational classroom and admin and a dog park! I am so excited to finally see the structures being completed! The corner property makes HHS visible to the public and will allow volunteering by Westside community and adoptions so much easier. Hawaiian Humane Society's mission to "promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals" needs your help! Please support! Reminder: the in person 32nd annual PetWalk is on October 29, 2022 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Set up your team now and support a worthy cause!

This place is awesome. They took in a few animals I found fast. They also were a big help contacting an animal owner. I enjoy Donating dog and cat is here to help.

We've been on the lookout for another "child" and had some time to kill before dinner and our flight back to Maui, so we popped in on a whim. THE PLACE: Getting here was a chore in itself as they're located on a one-way road which forks into a freeway on-ramp. Horrible Google map directions didn't tell me to stay left at the fork and I found myself on the freeway and going in the wrong direction. Re-route! It wasn't as spread out or big as I had anticipated, especially for being on Oahu. A small retail area is up front with the animals housed within three or four open-air cottage-like structures, separated by species. There weren't too many dogs to choose from when we were here, a good thing overall, but unfortunately we left empty-handed. The majority of the dogs were too big for as we wanted one that could fit in a washtub to be bathed and would be better suited to our existing-sized canines. Kennels and public areas were clean. OVERALL: I'm all for adoption vs. buying from a breeder!

Stray injure dog injured my yard!

I have an unknown dog injured in the yard and they wouldn't come to help! They told me I would have to secure the dog first before they come! I told them I had a dog bite on my eye and it ruined my eye my entire life! I will never donate a penny to this place ever again! Luckily HPD is coming! I had to post one star, if I had a choice I would post none!

See Coco!!! We came here because we're in the search of a young male dog, but also one that's bigger then our other dog. We wanted to make sure we met the dog with our two kids too for compatibility. When my husband first saw Coco, we fell in love. We were planning on scheduling a day to bring our other dog, but when we checked the website, we found out the Coco got adopted. We were so sad but so happy for him since we heard he was at the Humane Society for a while. This place is amazing. The facility was really nice, clean, and just open. We loved being able to just walk around freely without being hammered by someone. When we found a dog we were interested in, the staff was great. They had a closed off area where we could take the dog & also an area/garden where we could walk the dog with leash. All in all, we had a great experience here, even though it wasn't time to adopt yet.

Ask the Community - Hawaiian Humane Society

Do they allow black cat adoption in the month of October?

Humane Society is still running NO adoption fees on all adoptions (cats of any color) and at both campuses.

Can we return in 30 day if we can't take care?

While you may always surrender an animal there you won't get a refund on your adoption fee. Consider before you adopt, very traumatic for the pet to be returned.

Do they accept unexpired wet dog food for donation? The website only says "dry dog food".

Not sure, but there are other non-profits such as Poi Dogs and Popoki that would!

Does the HHS do shots and vaccinations for stray kittens you want to adopt?

All animals get their vaccinations besides rabbits who dont get their RHDV shot there, unfortunately.

Are they currently open during our "stay at home" orders?

They are open by appointment only

The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary isn't what you'd think; it's mostly a safe zone for feral cats. The smell is immediately noticeable when you get out of the car: feline feces. The hot day we were there just made it worse the longer we stayed. The coolest part of this place is that the property owns a number of World War II era tunnels. They were used for munition and food storage before being decommissioned. Now the sanctuary uses them for large rummage sales to raise money for the property. The tunnels smell old; they're humid and a bit uncomfortable for people bothered by that type of climate. They offer $5 historic tours with a guide at noted times, so be sure to be there early if you're interested. Now for the unpleasant things. We brought our dog along and I felt unwelcome. I was so confused due to the name. Asking about the makeup of the animals they care for (as stated above) it's only cats. After we did our shopping, the dog and I waited outside. It was unbearably hot in the sun. We waited under the tarp area and were quickly met with fire ants biting our feet. Going under the trees, the smell was even worse, and immediately our feet were covered with flies. They were unrelenting. It was then we headed back in to the tunnel - I'd much rather deal with humidity than filth. In come the volunteers. I was reprimanded and rudely talked to on more than one occasion while I was minding my own business. No details are necessary, only they were "yelling" at the wrong person. It really turned me off to wanting to come back or bring others here. I'm unsure about their mission even less so when rudeness is all I experienced; outside of the stench that is.

First, the parking is very limited and you might have park a block away or so in the residential neighborhood. If you park outside, be aware that there is a very long and very steep driveway that you would have to walk up to get to the bunkers. Be prepared for a long hot tour if you go during the summer like we did. Bring water to hydrate and make sure you use the restroom just before you arrive because there is no public restroom. The fee for the tour is only $5 and $3 for children. Unfortunately our 11:00 tour was very large with about 70 people attending. So, as we enter the bunker we crowd together so we can listen to the tour guide but the air gets warmer because of everyone's body heat so you start perspiring from the start. The tunnels add to the acoustics so that with a large crowd you can hear everyone talking which makes it hard to hear the narration. People started shushing others but that only made them talk softer which really didn't help because their voices still can be heard in the tunnels. They say that the 1:00 tour is the least crowded so that might be the best option if you want to go. After the first half hour we gave up. We were dripping with sweat and frustrated because we couldn't hear the narration so we cut our losses and left. What history we did manage to hear was very interesting so I may return when the weather cools. There is also a thrift shop in the bunker where everything they sell is really cheap. My wife managed to find a few items and it only cost her $5. All proceeds go the the animal shelter so your money goes to a good cause.

Follow-Up Review This is a follow-up review we did not want…read moreto have to make. This is not the response we were expecting from the owner, Alex. Unfortunately, rather than an apology or accountability, we were met with personal attacks. We were called hoarders, accused of being uncaring pet owners, and labeled dishonest. These accusations were hurtful and unprofessional. Support of Expansion We want to clarify that we have never been unsupportive of her business expansion. As an entrepreneur myself, I genuinely celebrate growth within our local community. Supporting local businesses is especially important here in Hawaii. Our concern was never about expansion it was about a personal invasion of privacy that made us uncomfortable and unable to maintain trust within our home. Passport & Privacy We have video surveillance showing that more than just the back of a passport was visible. The passport was opened and viewed. Regardless of intent, a passport is a private legal document containing sensitive personal information. It does not pertain to dog walking services and should not be handled or examined by a service provider. Refrigerator & Freezer Our surveillance also shows our refrigerator and freezer being opened unnecessarily. A personal food item fell out, was used to cool down her face, and then placed back into our freezer. There were no personal ice packs present only our food items. This was unexpected and inappropriate. "Hoarding" Comment We appreciated that chewed items were removed that day when our dog chewed up his slow feeder bowl. However, being publicly labeled as "hoarders" is inaccurate and damaging. We had storage containers stacked in a room partially used for storage something common in many Hawaii households where space is limited. This does not constitute hoarding. We maintain our home responsibly. Service Length & Charges We reviewed our app conversations again and found no direct communication indicating a change in service length. We did miss a community group post mentioning rate increases. While we understand that rates may change, we were unaware that our scheduled time had been reduced. Had a price increase for a 30-minute session been clearly communicated, we would have gladly accepted it. Refund & Account We have not received confirmation or documentation of any processed refund and would appreciate a receipt for our records. Our account still exists within the app and prior conversations remain accessible. The app was simply removed from our phone once services were discontinued. The review was posted after waiting several days without a response. She also had our phone number but did not reach out directly. Reviews Clarification There were no coordinated or duplicate reviews. One review was posted on Google and one on Yelp by the same individual. No multiple accounts were created. A Google account was created solely to share this experience, as this was the first time we have felt compelled to post a negative review. Grief Statement We understand pet loss deeply and would always extend grace in that situation. It was stated that certain issues were due to grieving and needing time to spend the last moments with a senior pet. We later learned through those who knew her, as well as publicly available posts that were shared with us, that those final moments had actually taken place 5-6 months earlier (March/April), not during the month referenced. We would have responded with empathy and understanding had the timeline been accurate. However, the discrepancy left us feeling confused and hurt, as the explanation did not align with the information that was publicly available. We did not want this situation to escalate. We expected professionalism, respect for privacy, and honest communication. Instead, we were met with personal accusations that do not reflect our character or the facts. We have documentation from that time but hope it will not be necessary to share it. Our intention is simply to clarify our experience.

We talked with the people at length and they were extremely informative about all the kittens personalities. The kitten we selected is active and extremely affectionate. Obviously he had very good care. I think the Hawaii Cat Foundation does a great job for our community. As with any pet adoption you have to be willing to be honest about what your needs are and the kind of personality you require in a cat. My husband and I couldn't be happier with our interaction with the Hawaii Cat Foundation. I have been able to text and email with questions and received quick and courteous responses.

During the time the cat was in our care we managed to put weight on him and cure his condition with his diarrhea and heal its scabs..he was not healthy when we purchased. I trust the humane society to find it a safe and healthy environment, I would not recommend supporting this foundation as they are abusive to cats and extremely unprofessional.
