Details/ Background: Took one private surf lesson (1-2…read morehours) while in Hawaii. I'm a novice who's had 2 or 3 semi-private lessons about once per year for the past two NJ summers. My last surf lesson- over a year ago- was unfortunately stressful and resulted only in killer full-body workout, 100% falling in the water. I've been wanting to try surfing in a warmer climate and different instruction to rekindle my excitement and hopefully catch some waves!! Very happy with my experience with Hans & my instructor, Jimmy. What I appreciated about Hans: 1. Scheduling: was able to book the day before. If hoping for semi-private or group, plan in advance. 2. Facilities: clean, attractive, decent merch, easy parking across the street by Honolulu Zoo. After the session, there was clear protocol for discarding / sanitizing used rash guard + shoes. 3. Introduction: quick but thorough PowerPoint presentation with examples of what to do / not do while in the water, followed by on-land demos. What I appreciated about my instructor: Jimmy was easy going, confident, and catered to my experience and stamina (I am relatively very healthy but don't workout or swim regularly). His vibe made it easy to relax and apply simple techniques to the time in the water. Jimmy shared stories from his person experience and prior students that were insightful and relatable. Jimmy is a natural encourager and demonstrates a genuine confidence in his students in their ability to surf. Jimmy also demonstrated an intimate familiarity with the beach and water. He was able to pinpoint the distance out into the water that would yield the best result for the appropriate amount of effort based on my goals. My surf goals for this session were pretty mild-- #1: get out there #2: have a good time, feel comfortable and ENJOY #3: catch 1 or 2 waves (even kneeling would have been great). With Jimmy, I easily surpassed my goals-- got out there had a GREAT time caught several waves (standing) and finished about half to the very end of the wave, coming back down on the board for smooth completion. I would definitely recommend Jimmy for instruction at Hans Hedemann Surf School. I only wish Hawaii wasn't so far from home or I'd already book my next session!

He was flexible and kind enough to fit me into his schedule within the next hour. He prepared three boards for me to use. Ash taught me things that I didn't even know, despite having surfed many times for many years. For example Ash taught me how to line myself up with a marker on the land, taught me how to paddle more efficiently, and how to turn in the water. Things that I didn't even know I could be doing better. Before even getting into the water, Ash was teaching me things to look at and watch out for from observing the ocean. What an amazing experience!…read more We booked for the 9:30 glow paddle and got a call around 5pm asking if we would switch to the 7:30. No big deal, we were happy to switch. We are a family of three, and I guess that's the cut off from other reviews. We showed up to the meeting spot at the time we were told and were met by our guide. Come to find out, the other people booked for the tour had cancelled, so it was just us! We got on our boards and got going. We learned so much! And being it was only our little family, we got to ask so many questions and go at our pace. We paddled around and got to go under water falls. Our guide was so kind and so knowledgeable. After we were done we were super hungry and headed to L&L for some plates. I wish we would have gotten to the PCC just a little earlier so we could have enjoyed the food trucks or other dinner options on site. We will definitely recommend to anyone who comes to visit us!

Then a friend told me about their experience with the North Shore Keiki Surf School program just for Kids. I signed my sister up right away. She had so much fun, Stephanie paddled out with her to a Safe location where the waves were a lot smaller than the rest of the Surf Breaks along the North Shore. I was even able to walk along the beach and out to the point, where I took some amazing photo's of my little sister Surfing. There were many Sea Turtles swimming right next to the reef. The views of the mountain were breathtaking. Elleise asked if we could come back and Surf on her birthday so all her friends will Surf with her. It is such a relaxing ride along the coast as the waves crash along the shore and the breeze off the ocean keeps us cool. This place is absolutely horrible. It was a waste of my time and gas to drive all the way out…read morethere. I made a reservation online for 6 people and 6 balls to rent. I wrote in the time that I wanted to start which was 1230 pm. I show up at 1230 exactly and go to check in at the outpost Hut. The 2 guys inside the Hut tell me they didn't see my reservation and they rented out all their balls to a group that just came in..... So...we had to WAIT until the group was finished to get the balls to play.... On top of that, I paid $10 per person to play, and the guy in the hut tells me there's only 6 or 7 holes available since they use the course to pop fireworks off of. New years was about a week ago!! You're telling me, you're too lazy to put back the holes for a whole week?! Cmon man..... Then, I ask for a cart to put all our stuff in and he tells me that they don't rent out carts but that I could get one at the golf hut. So my mom walks all the way over to the golf hut for them to tell her that they don't rent out golf carts for soccer golf......?! So then after all of this, the guy in the outpost hut tells me he will refund me the balls we rented as a way to make up the unfinished course and the time we had to wait for the balls to come back. That was nice of them.....except for the fact that he didn't do it!!! He was straight up lying. Bc i kept checking my account and I didn't see no refund pending from them.... So I waited 2-3 days then I finally call them back checking up on the refund. Explain the whole thing and I'm pretty sure the guy who answered the phone was the same guy who told me he would refund it to me the day of my reservation! So he puts me on hold and tells me that a manager has to be the one to refund me. So why did that guy in the outpost hut tell me he was refunding me if he really wasn't?!?! To top it all off, the course looks like crap. And they don't even have a score card to give you. Good thing I took a picture of their somewhat course layout so I knew where the heck I was going. The course is literally just grass that is so overgrown and bumpy that you cannot even call it foot golf. Save yourself time and don't go here.
