2019-09-07. St. Lawrence Apple Festival. There wasn't a Yelp site for the Apple Festival itself…read more(and being a yearly event, I'm not about to make one), so the Festival Committee site will have to do. They deserve the credit anyways for making this happen every year. This year marks the 27th year of fundraising the Parish has organized for the School. The ever popular festival in Shelby Twp. this attraction is open to the public with free admission and free parking. The location is the grounds of St. Lawrence Parish and Catholic School on Utica Rd, just south of M-59; home to the Mustangs. The venue is their rear parking lot, their courtyard, and a part of their baseball diamond. It supports an amazing cause as all proceeds go directly to the School. The event is largely supported by Alumni, local businesses, and volunteers. The Midway is hosted by TJ Schmidt & Company (I'm not sure if they're paid a set fee or if they're one of the sponsors). Parking is mainly across the street in their overflow lot, but they have crossing guards posted in several locations directing vehicular traffic. Their front parking lot of the school is reserved for those with a Handicap permit. St Lawrence also provides a golf cart shuttle for those that may need assistance, or have a hard time travelling on foot. The Parish remains open for afternoon mass, and you're free to enter, light a candle and say a prayer. Being a Midway, there are no restrooms, but there are port-a-potties with a wash station. There are also hand sanitizing stations at most food stalls to help prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. If you're really hard pressed to use their port-a-Jon's or if you're with little ones, you may also use the restrooms inside. The main big top tent at the entrance has your food, beer garden, and live band. Apple pie is the showcase of course, but they also have Rinaldi Polish Sausages, pierogies, stuffed cabbages, golubki, shawarma, pizza, burgers and fries, and the list goes on. Outside you can find your typical Carnie fare of popcorn; candied apples; cotton candy; all your deep fried goods like a bucket o fries, corn dogs, elephant ears, funnel cakes, oreos, snickers, chicken tenders, and the list goes on. Pretty much anything you can think of bettering and frying... Ride tickets are $1.25/ea, and all day wristbands are $22. Some rides require you to be at least 48" tall. Average ride is 4 tickets, so wristband break even point is 5 attractions. Hours are from noon to midnight, so if plan to make a day if it, the wristbands are an excellent value. Midway games run anywhere from $1 to $10, are not too difficult to win. Note: They accept credit cards, but there is a $3 service charge. While the rides are not as thrilling as those you find at Cedar Point, they're not bad for a Midway. Rides like the Zipper that thrash you about inside a cage, a mini drop tower, the swings that put butterflies in your belly, bungee trampoline, the centripetal and centrifugal forces of the Gravitron or the Wipeout, the hand gliding experience of the Cliff Hanger, and the classic Ferris Wheel. They have one lone haunted house ride. There is also a kids zone with some appropriate attractions for the little ones which helps make it an event the entire family can enjoy. We came late in the afternoon to try to grab what was left of daylight. After a couple of hours, we dined on glorious fried foods, then went back for round 2. After dark is a whole different experience. All the rides are lit up and the place has an entirely different vibe to it. The music at each ride is pumping out harder, louder, and there seems to be more energy in the air. The evening's are also more populated as the teens come out in larger groups. All in all a good day of fun can be had, the lines are never too long, and the footprint of the grounds are not so large that you'll be exhausted getting around. There are also benches and tables littered throughout to give you a place to rest if needed. There are constantly people coming and going so the place always seems packed, and if you have dietary limitations (who's allergic to fried foods?), you can always leave for dinner and come back later! 4 stars for the event itself, +1 for the great cause it supports, an honorary 5 stars here!
