When people think of whiskey in Indiana's Brown County, they might think of that other place. (You…read moreknow the one.) But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process. I did, and I found it very informative! I had a new appreciation for the kind of whiskey and spirits they are making here at Bear Wallow Distillery. From the ingredients they choose to the barrels they use, they really put their foot in it, as they say. If you like whiskey, or just like to try local spirits, this is a good place to visit in Nashville.

The guy working was so nice and explained everything so we knew what the different whiskey's were. We loved it and I would for sure come back here. When you drive up, first you notice a massive amount of green land with trees bordering the property. There's a 100 acres of land, so there's plenty of green space. Down the drive, there's a parking lot next to their main building. There's space for 30-40 cars, at the very least. Walking into the building, if you look to your right at sunset (when we arrived), you'll catch a brilliant sunset past the trees. It's a wonderful time to be in nature! Once you walk down the path and into the venue, allow your eyes to soak up the cozy warmth of the wooden walls, bar, and floor. This is a lovely place! Right when you walk in there is a bar to the right and then space for around 4-5 round tables and some counters/long table space for food. Keep walking and you'll have three amazing bathrooms to your left. I know, right? How strange is it to be in love with a venue's bathrooms, but you'll know when you see it. The bathroom doors are set to slide open along the wall, and are all made of re-purposed wood from a Brown County auction (thanks to one of the owners' family members explaining this to me!). The bathroom interiors are all bright colors and nothing is gender specific. Also, it's eco-friendly! The sink water fills up the toilet tanks and there are dozens of white towels & a laundry basket. There's a larger gathering place that can fit around 7-8 round tables in the next room, and past this is a door leading to the outside. They allow bonfires, woohoo! Beautiful. Also, the land is so far away from Bloomington and Indianapolis, that there's no light pollution ruining the night sky. On a clear night, there are dozens of sparkling stars. Camping may even be allowed (it was at this event) and there's plenty of space. They have space for disc golf as well. Overall, I loved the place. I hope to attend future events at this venue. This is a family-owned property and it's the perfect addition to the Nashville/southern Indiana community!

Depending on how busy they are, you may have a short wait for a table, and your food might take a little longer to come out--but it's well worth it. Don't stop at just the restaurant. Take some time to explore the beautiful grounds, browse the merchandise shop, and walk out to Hard Truth on the Rocks, where you'll find a spacious outdoor deck overlooking the property. During the warmer months, they often have live music, making it an easy place to spend a few relaxing hours. The cocktails are excellent, the staff has always been incredibly friendly, and there's plenty of Hard Truth merchandise if you're looking for a souvenir. I may or may not have left with a t-shirt. Whether you're visiting Brown County for the day or just passing through Nashville, Hard Truth is more than just a restaurant--it's a destination that's absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.

I ordered the spinach salad and it came out perfectly. I had grilled chicken added to it. The flavor was great and there were sun-dried tomatoes, bacon, and walnuts on the salad. The campgrounds are excellent, especially Taylor Ridge. But be aware that you need to make reservations ahead of time, especially if you are planning a fall camping trip. Campsites sell out early. Shower rooms are decent, not wonderful. But satisfactory for a campground. Quiet hours are strictly observed, and the park rangers will pay a visit to your campsite if you aren't quiet after 10:00 pm Once we received a visit from a friendly park ranger when we were playing cards around 11 pm. We hadn't realized that we were being noisy at all but the ranger advised us that sound carries throughout the campground. Hiking trails range from easy to moderate. I'm picky when it comes to these 2 things, but it had to have been one of the most comfortable hotel/inn beds I've slept in. Everything was great and we've already talked about making this a yearly thing. Most of the stores close at 5 pm though which we were a bit put off by. The toy store across the way was so great though! Lots of cute shops and decent food around.
