Get your smoke & drink on. Decent liquor prices, maybe iffy beer prices. Super nice owners…read more This is a son & pop operation in north Detroit. I was on a mission to find the highly regarded Trade Winds liquor store (the only store in Detroit, so the rumor goes, that carries Chartruese, Pimm's, real absinthe, etc. - I myself was on the hunt for ORANGE bitters), but my bartender/faux-cartographer acquaintance recommending Trade Winds to me mistakenly placed the store at Livernois and 8Mile (which it is most certainly NOT, i had the displeasure of discovering. Trade Winds is closer to Livernois and McNichols). So, as a last ditch attempt at finding Trade Winds, and having convinced myself (wrongly) that I had simply mis-remembered the name of the joint, I ducked into Tom's Liquor Palace (just below 8Mile) as it looked like the largest liquor store in the area. Turns out, this is NO Trade Winds. It's a very run-of-the-mill liquor store. BUT, it was bumping on a Thursday evening with happy chatty people, the booze prices are just a shave cheaper than I'm used to, they've got all your common brand cigarettes and cigars that you could possibly want, and they DO carry regular Angostura bitters, which is not always the case in your regular liquor shop. Also of note, the service was super friendly. In one of those few business industries where friendliness really doesn't get you anything or anywhere, if not just attracting problems, I'd say it was a nice perk. The only complaint is that I picked up an unpriced 6 pack of Tecate. They charged me just short of $11. It's usually $8 bucks plus tax everywhere else... didn't like that. I think they just winged the price instead of actually checking the books. Boo. Nothing to particularly recommend about this place worth driving out of your way, but if you live in that neck of the woods around 8 and Livernois, it's worth price comparing there. Definitely cheaper than the Livernois liquor stores just north of 8, and also on 9, in Ferndale.
