I'd honestly be curious to know just how many locals know that this place is still in operation. I mean, this place has been around FOREVER. They do a pretty good job with dramas, especially when hosted in the smaller more intimate theater on the base floor. Where things get blurry is in the big theater upstairs. The entire property is in desperate need of some TLC... Firstly the Youngstown Playhouse is square in the middle of a pretty bad neighborhood, so don't linger around the area. Secondly, the building & property have been allowed to fall into a pretty significant state of disrepair, however, it is much nicer on the inside. It's really a shame, moreover, you can tell this place used to be pretty special in it's hay-day. Thirdly, the biggest issue is their sound system- it's awful. Every time I have seen a musical here I can't understand half the lyrics. The sound just comes out distorted. Do yourself a solid, come see a drama or comedy & you will have a good time, just pass on the musicals until they upgrade their sound system.

I recently attended Wicked: For Good at the Canton Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio, and…read moreunfortunately the experience was overshadowed by a situation that should never have been allowed to continue. Throughout nearly the entire movie, two girls (roughly between 9-13 years old) were loudly giggling and talking. At one point, someone from the theatre came in, told them to quiet down, and then left. The noise immediately resumed and continued for the rest of the film. This alone made it extremely difficult to enjoy what should have been a great movie experience. When the movie ended, the same two girls ran up and down the aisles screaming. I later learned they were either the children of, or under the supervision of, a theatre employee -- specifically the same person who briefly told them to be quiet earlier. They were also seated in a rear section where patrons are apparently not even allowed to sit. There were very few people in the theatre, which made the lack of enforcement and professionalism even more noticeable. If this is typical of how screenings are handled, it raises serious concerns about management and customer experience. I believe the audience deserved better intervention during the film, and frankly, an apology or compensation would be appropriate given how disruptive the situation was. The Canton Palace Theatre is a beautiful venue with a lot of potential, which makes this experience all the more disappointing. I hope management takes this kind of situation seriously moving forward so guests can actually enjoy the movies they pay to see.

The ceiling of the theater shows a dark starry sky with clouds that rotates around, which is a super cool feature. The ushers were helpful pre-show. My biggest complaint is that the lobby is ridiculously small/crowded for the amount of people the theater accommodates.

The Keybank State theater is the first and largest of the Playhouse Square theaters constructed…read more Known for it's extremely long lobby you can see huge and beautiful murals on all 4 sides. The theater's history dates back to vaudeville where live stage shows were presented featuring long gone celebrities such as Abbott and Costello, Jack Benny, and Judy Garland. It later became a movie house before transforming into what it is today. Due to it's size it is able to present musical extravaganzas such as "Hamilton", and "Miss Saigon" which was the reason for my visit. My husband and I had great seats but they felt hard and we were cramped. Seems like they should have updated these as well. Before entering the theater you pick up your Playbill or whatever they call it here near the end of the lobby. Friendly people known as "red coats" are extremely willing to help you with whatever you need. I was excited to see the updated production that dated back to the 90s. The performance started out okay but we had difficulty hearing part of the opening scenes. Were it not for the fact I'm familiar with this production I would have been lost. Miss Saigon is an outstanding production of survival during the last days of the Vietnam war. We meet 17 year old Kim, forced to work in a bar run by the notorious Engineer-expertly played by Red Concepion. She meets and falls in love with Chris, an American GI but torn apart during the fall of Saigon. She, for 3 years tries to find her way back to him, who has no idea he has fathered a son. The story is heart-wrenching since one can only pity the fates of the mixed breed children as emphasized in the number "Bui doi." The songs are phenomenal but the best part is the use of special effects. The famous helicopter scene is recreated with such authenticity it makes you wonder how it is done. Along with a Chinese dragon and a Cadillac on stage, exceptional singing and solid acting, the show itself is definitely a 5 star rating in my opinion. The restrooms are in the basement right outside the doors leading into this theater but they have first floor handicapped facilities available. Since this theater sits behind the Connor Palace theater you can exit via a side door instead of waiting a long time once the show is over. That works if you have orchestra seats and you get out fairly quickly. The Keybank theater is one of many theaters which are all connected which is better known as Playhouse Square. Preshow talks are given in the "Allen" theater about an hour before showtime and in addition to a parking garage you can find street lots nearby as well as places to eat. With the exception of the cramped seating and some poor acoustics this theater hosts some of the finest productions I've seen during my visits here. Definitely recommend "Miss Saigon" if you are here or if it comes to your city. Take the time to check out the architecture and the beautiful murals in the long lobby from the 2nd floor food area. It's worth seeing if you have the time.

Kent State produced a play every Sunday in its theater. I thought we needed more art in the East Liverpool--Wellsville area. So did a couple other guys, one of whom worked for the East Liverpool radio station.

Great acting, good music...NONE of the original songs, almost 3 hours long, cut a bunch of scenes, added scenes....it was soooo disappointing. We almost left in the first 30 minutes, but I was expecting it to get better. ALSO, 99% of the cast was LP alumni, not even students. They were all adults, bios in the books about what college they're going to, and most even ALREADY GRADUATED COLLEGE! Plus they hired an Orchestra. All old dudes on the instruments. Omg it was bad! I will NEVER recommend any musicals here to anyone. Every one we've gone to at Western Beaver has been amazing. This was the worst musical we've ever seen! However, when singing with the band playing the words either merged with the music or the words are total overlays by the music! We love talking plays, without music! Music plays would be better if the voice is amplified louder or the music is dampen! Parking is paid parking on two floor roof Restrooms are in the basement with only stairs! Restrooms are clean and large, but long line waits. Performances are professional quality and sometimes performers are brought in for their specialty's!
