I have been sitting on this since earlier this year when I brought my cat here as she had something going on with her ears and it was the closest clinic so I figured I would give it a try. I should have made this review sooner but was honestly a bit traumatized. The vet made me feel extremely uncomfortable with the way he roughly handled my cat. I thought maybe it was just a bad first impression and that maybe I was being sensitive given that it was my first time there but after reading all of the reviews and the defensive and borderline argumentative and aggressive responses to them, I can see that this is a pattern of behavior and not just a one off experience. The vet was VERY rough when handling my cat and very aloof the entire time. He had absolutely zero bedside manner. He was roughly grabbing her face and prodding her like she was an inanimate object instead of a living, breathing animal with feelings. He swabbed her ears very forcefully as well. They also have a very large dog that roams in and out of the exam room which made my already skittish cat even more unsettled. The vet techs on the other hand were amazing and were doing everything they could to keep my baby calm while the vet was roughly grabbing her face. I have a new cat and was considering bringing her here but will be going elsewhere. read more

**updated** (ZERO STARS) MY PARENTS DOG DIED, this vet refused to run blood work on him. Which is his primary vet. NOW THE DOG IS DEAD!! If I could give ZERO STARS I WOULD!! DO NOT GO HERE!!!! If you have a large breed dog beware!!! Refused to take care of him!!! They say they are trained to handle larger breeds or dogs with anxiety from being in a place they aren't familiar with. My parents dog a 5 year old Rottweiler 90lbs went in because he was having seizures like 2-3 weeks ago in December and they just had started. The vet said he was being too aggressive, so that day the vet gave him gave ear/flea medication and sent him home with a sedative pill and reschedule him for his next visit a a couple weeks out without doing any blood work to see what was causing him to have seizures in the first place. Since this is the reason they brought him into the vet because they were told it was an emergency and he had to see a vet right away since the seizures were close so close together. Instead of trying to help they Rescheduled him for January pretty far out if you ask me especially for seizures.. cluster seizures at that.. they could have gave my parents the pill in advance since he's been there before or have him come back a day or two later but no sent him home with nothin to help. Now this is where it gets scary my parents dog went into a seizure for over two hours on Friday and would not stop shaking and convulsing and had to be rushed to the emergency vet Put on medication and sedated, now my parents dog looks as if he is about to die and hasn't moved in two days. And still is suffering from seizures it's the saddest thing I've ever seen. (We called OAKWOOD first that day but they said there was nothing they could do at this point but prescribe him medicine.. pretty much helpless the entire time also I need to mention the appointment they scheduled was for this upcoming Tues. so all of this possibly could have been avoided if he would have said it was serious and scheduled it earlier or we could have taken him to another vet that cares instead of waiting... we thought by him saying we could wait everything would be fine and wasn't serious) BIG MISTAKE!!! Even with medication at this point I think it has been prescribed too late and should have been taken care of at the first visit. If you have a large or somewhat skid-dish dog DO NOT GO TO THIS VET. They are not properly trained to handle animals of larger sizes and instead of doing their job they well refuse service and say it is for safety concerns. And neglect the well being of your dog basically just brushed him to the side because they aren't equipped to handle an animal of that size. The dog has never bit anyone, but was scared in an unfamiliar environment. He has been there before and has never been sedated at any appointment... so if he They also had a mussel on him.. They refused to take care of everything the day it needed to be done and this vet is to blame for the animals passing.. no blood work was done at all and we told them he had cluster seizures. They just sent him home like everything was cool and said come back in two weeks. Which led to him being pretty much paralyzed if blood work was done the day of and medicine prescribed we probably wouldn't be in this position right now. Worst decision I ever made was taking him to this vet that day instead take your dog where they actually care about the animals. Instead of putting of serious situations. If it were a child that had a seizure would you just send them home? No, and pets are some peoples children as a vet it is your job to take care of these animals as if they were your own. I REPEAT DO NOT GO HERE. IF YOU HAVE A LARGE DOG OR CARE ABOUT YOUR ANIMALS WELL BEING. Its unacceptable and your office is accountable. Update your safety protocol to have larger animals sedated before hand or possibly offer it or only take cats if your scared to work with dogs and will decline to work on them. An animals health should not be neglected to the point of DEATH! read more

Honestly it did not seem like the vet likes cats or has ever owned a cat. He was indeed hard to hear especially over my cat hissing. There were two big dogs in the waiting room who were waiting to be taken back. Obviously having two big dogs made my cat anxious. When the dogs were done with their appointment one of them was bleeding all over the floor. Which I'm not sure why the bleeding wasn't stopped before he left the room? So when I did take him back he was already very much stressed out. He was hissing because he was stressed. And the vet started stressing me out when he wrestled my cat to cut his nails. I understand that it was most likely for safety to cut his nails to give him medication but I am more than capable of doing it myself when the cat is not stressed. I had already told him that I have in fact given him oral medication before. I didn't ask for his nails to be cut. I have no problem doing it at home. I just wanted to know why my cat has been vomiting. I did get some antibiotics. Saw on another review he left a very unprofessional comment (He might here too). I felt like I was treated like a child and that I don't know the cat I've had since he was 4 weeks old. They also accidentally over charged me and instead of refunding it, they gave me credit instead Maybe he's great with dogs. Dr. Bielefeld has been rude both of the two times I've come here for a basic service on my cat. Does not answer direct pet-related questions and couldn't complete a cat claw trimming because he didn't want to inconvenience himself. He did half the paws and said he was done. The staff is nice but the doctor is extremely rude and no regard for the paying client and pet patient. I've never experienced a veterinarian like this that cannot control a 10-pound cat in a calm manner. read more

I've been taking my dog, Wilbur, to oakwood vet clinic since I adopted him in February of this year. I have been to many vet clinics in the Dayton area, as I have had pets my whole life. The dr and his staff are some of the friendliest and loving people I have met. My dog is actually excited to see them every time he goes in. I've yet to take my cat, which I have had since 2015, as she is up to date on her shots, but I am sure once I do take her they will treat her as lovingly as I do. I've taken my cat to at least three other clinics in the area since I've had her and I have never been as impressed as I am with the staff at OVC. The prices are also EXTREMELY reasonable. As a single young homeowner price CAN also be a factor for me, but every time I take my dog to them I'm blown away at how inexpensive it is, as I've taken my cat to places that have cost well over $200 for a simple checkup. As the other reviews have said, the Dr can mumble, and sometimes he can be hard to understand, but if you don't understand ask him or his assistant to clarify themselves and they will be happy to do so. The dr is VERY much an animal person, as well as all of his staff, which is very important to me, as well as the rest of his clients. I have never been to a place that calms my nerves (I panic over the smallest things when it comes to my babies) as much as this place has. As long as OVC is around I know I will have a place which I can trust to give the best care to my pets. I will never go anywhere else! Thank you so much oakwood vet clinic. When our dog had his surgery at another vet's office, he had complications and suffered for an entire week without any solution from the vet. This vet uses laser surgery, which would have prevented the pain our dog experienced. Our cat had his surgery here and had zero complications. He acted like nothing had happened a few hours post surgery. We have brought our 2 cats and dog since then to this vet for the last year and a half. We love our vet! And he ALWAYS trims our pets's nails which is the cherry on top!!! read more

Do yourself a favor and go to Kettering Animal Hospital. Here's why: I am in town for the holidays and needed an urgent chest X-ray for my dog to rule out pneumonia. He's been recently diagnosed with a disease that makes him prone to aspiration, so pneumonia is a big concern for me (he's had it twice already this year). I made an appointment with Oakwood Vet Clinic and told Jessica, the receptionist, that my dog is wary of strangers and it's best that their staff ignore him and don't give him eye contact until he has a chance to warm up to them. This rule goes double for my dog since this is a new facility for him and he doesn't know any of their staff. He's a nervous guy and came in shaking from fear. When the vet and vet tech came in our room, guess what? They stared at him as they entered and he immediately reacted by growling. Off to a bad start. Next, the vet told me he didn't read any of my dog's medical records that were faxed over the day before, so I had to explain everything myself. Another red flag. The last straw came when the vet came back in the room (after I suggested he go read the records) and said that my dog must be sedated for the X-ray. My dog has had numerous X-rays over the past year due to his condition and sedation has never been required. (Interestingly, Jessica the receptionist mentioned sedation when I booked the appointment, which leaves me wondering if they drug all their patients unnecessarily.) I declined the sedation or any services from this clinic. As we were on our way out the door, I asked for my dog's records so I could take them to Kettering Animal Hospital, which is just a short drive away. The vet REFUSED to release the records without charging me a fee. He wouldn't give care to my dog without drugs, and then tried to ransom my dog's vet records for money on top of everything else. Further, in plain sight from the reception counter, I saw a boxer tethered to a cabinet with no one paying any attention to her, and she was crying. The "office dog" was roaming around off-leash with no supervision and no isolation from patients for disease-preventative reasons. None of what I saw or experienced was professional, sanitary, caring, or safe. Your pet (and my pup) deserve far better than what this clinic can offer. PS my dog got his chest X-ray without sedation in a walk-in appointment with the friendly staff at Kettering just after this incident!! read more

I have been a client of Oakwood Vet clinic for over ten years. I have multiple cats, mostly rescues. Dr. B. has performed everything from nuturing and treating a wild feral cat, to teeth extractions, tumor removals, ear surgery and euthanasias. When one of my elderly cats had a tumor on her thyroid, Dr.B spent time researching both the condition and the recommendations for performing the procedure. Then he shared all the data with me. The procedure was a success and added years to her life. To say Dr.B. is a competent vet is a bit of an understatement. When I bring a new rescue in, the exam is complete. The animal is checked and treated for everything from fleas and worms, to ear mites and blood work for FLV and FIP. The staff is caring, helpful and knowledgeable. This is a vet who is committed to continuing education. He stays up to date on current medical treatments for animals. He performs laser surgery, which is less painful than regular surgery and sees to it that the animal's pain is managed after procedures. A scope is used check you pet's ears and teeth. You can see right on the screen what's happening inside their ear canal and mouth. And you're given options as well as recommendations for treatment. Clearly, I'm a huge fan. I have tried other vets in the area. One told me my cat's strange enlarged pupil was just a symptom of old age. Dr. B. immediately recognized it as a not uncommon form of cancer. The cats was in terrible pain because the condition advanced to Glaucoma. Dr. B was able to refer me to a specialist who was able to help my cat and treat the condition. Many vets in this area are very nice. However, I've never met one who was as good at diagnosis or as thorough with treating my animals. Patty Bommarito read more

I have only been once, but had a great experience. Techs and vet were all nice and seemed to care about my cat. They worked us in on the same day when our previous vet could not. The price was great considering we had an overnight stay, thanks to a new patient discount. read more

I have been to several vet clinics and Oakwood Vet is the best that I have been to. They are always prompt, courteous and I think the Vet is fabulous. He is so calm and knowledgeable. My pet who does not like to be held or handled does great at the vet office I will continue taking my pet there for as long as I have her. read more

After reading the scathing review posted here on Yelp I had to speak up, because this is totally NOT my experience. I usually go to a veterinary clinic closer to home (one town over, where I live)....but when I have had difficult situations, I trusted Dr. Bielefeld because he is an amazingly good vet. My sister has been a client of his for years and recommended him because he keeps current on vet publications, he gives very thorough exams (much more than any other vet I've known), and he is very motivated for animals to *not* suffer or be in pain. I think he was one of the first, if not the first vet in the Dayton area, to do laser surgery because it was better for the animals. That's a very expensive piece of equipment, but even though Oakwood veterinary clinic is a one-man practice, Dr. Bielefeld spent the money so that the animals would have a better surgical experience. As for my personal experience with Oakwood Veterinary Clinic: my golden retriever developed a tumor on her gums. It was a form of cancer that had a high rate of returning, even after being surgically removed. My vet at the time wanted to do the surgery but said that she might have to remove part of my dog's lower jaw...."but they can do fine without their entire jaw" (yeah, I was dumbfounded by that comment as well.) There was no way I was going to go forward with the surgery without a second opinion, so based on my sister's recommendation I went to Oakwood veterinary clinic (her vet). As an aside, my sister is a former NIH research scientist, published in international scientific journals, who is very precise and reads vet journals herself, so she expects her vet to be both skilled and familiar with the latest research. She would never put up with a substandard vet, so I take her recommendations seriously. So, I took my golden retriever to Dr. Bielefeld. He did the surgery on Kimmie and did it so well, that the cancer never returned. While that might have just been luck I don't think so....and it was quite a contrast to my vet who was contemplating removing part of Kimmie's jaw. Both during the consultation and with the aftercare, Dr. Bielefeld and his staff were very kind. It was obvious that they cared about Kimmie and wanted to help her to get well. At NO time did I experience anything like the person who posted the 1 star review. I'm not related to anybody at Oakwood veterinary clinic, I just have experienced first hand their excellent care of my pet. Further, my sister has been their client for at least 10 or more years. She fosters for 2 of the larger local rescue groups, and so she has been to the clinic many, many times. All I have ever heard from her are comments about their kindness, friendliness, and the superb care that Dr. Bielefeld has given both her own pets and kittens who come to her sick and sometimes need extra help to recover. Because I've heard of her many experiences, and because of my own experience, I think fairness dictates another view of Oakwood veterinary clinic, which is why I'm giving them a 5 star rating--because in my experience, they deserve it. read more
