Trash. My 46-year-old fella and I (a 45-year-old gal) just went to R Public House for dinner. We had a burger and fries, my man had a whiskey on the rocks, and I had two martinis. Neither of us were even remotely drunk and we felt like walking so we started heading South. We've lived in the neighborhood for years and had never been to Oasis so we figured we'd have another drink and then walk back home. We stood outside for a few minutes, the fella had a smoke, and before we even got to the door to go in, some bearded bouncer asshole came out, said, "he looks a little inebriated for the bar" and then walked right back inside. From the look of the place, they could surely use the business. But also from the look of the place, they clearly like their clientele to be of the younger variety. Since neither of us could have possibly even appeared drunk, I can only assume a coupled-up, older pair isn't the vibe they're looking for at their bar. Keep that in mind, Loyola ladies. read more

I ended up here one night because someone had the 'bright' idea of going down to the Oasis after more shall we say, 'family friendly' watering holes had closed up shop. It's a dive bar, and it helps if the people you're with are semi-regulars who know the bartender, or at least are recognized by her. That being said, it's a really large space and it was easy for our group of 8 or so to be able to find a table without having to jostle for space or get an accidental elbow to the eye. The beer list has some surprising depth to it, although if you wanted say PBR or whatever it's there too. I can't say I was amazed by it or turned off by it but for late night drinking it's really not bad at all. read more

A nicer of nice dive bars of Rogers Park. Seated from my bar stool I inquired if they'd recently renovated or cleaned the place. It was spic and span from top to bottom of the bar area. Newly painted, cleaned venting and they spent an arm and a leg on their pool tables. Which now require a deposit for play. The reason being that they host pool tournaments for legit groups, so they have a professionally built table with custom balls and cues. Other offerings: Big Buck Hunter World, Touchtunes, open till 4 am nightly & 5 am on Saturday nights. "Packaged" bottles & beers for sale till close( youngins' this means you can take it to go). They also offer free Wi-Fi & charging for your smart phones. Either bring your own or hope they might have the right charger for you. The crowd is mixed depending on the time of day. Sometimes random transient types or when school is in session Loyola students on the prowl. Most weeks they offer karaoke and a DJ spinning on some certain day. Call or stop in for details. Most often they have daily specials on booze, beer and shots. Their shots are huge, see the photos I've posted. A decent selection of beers as well. Oh and if you see Michelle one of the many nice bartenders, she's a sweetie, so be nice and say you heard about her on Yelp. I think she might like the popularity. read more

Very sketchy college bar that is filled with underage minors. When you arrive you meet the bouncer whose sole job is to check IDs. While waiting in line multiple girls who appeared underage would have an excuse why they don't have an ID. They would flirt and ask to be let in without any identification. The front door ogre would then allow them into the bar. This door attendant would then turn away people without any justification. We watched him not allow this guy with a leg disability to enter. When the disabled guy asked why after waiting in line for 20 minutes he was informed that he did not have to be given a reason. Once you make it past the door you may have mistaken that you were in a frat house by how much cheap beer is on the floor making it extremely sticky. If you go to the men's restroom the floor is instead soaked with piss. The bar is obviously supported and known by the locals as a college hangout spot that serves minors. If it was located in the suburbs instead of the city it would most definitely be shut down. read more

This isn't a fancy place, nor is a date night place, unless you're out with me. This bar, depending on the time of day a place where you can pull up a stool and have a conversation with friends. Sort of the dive version of Cheers, without all the kitschy decorating. It's dark, the bar is the centerpiece, there's some TV's and a pinball machine, etc., you get the picture. Do not expect candles, or little vases with flowers, looking for that head over to Lincoln Park instead of Roger's Park, the vibe is different here. They have some good beers, not an extensive list, some cider and wine, but it's not a wine bar, and this was the mix of drinks we ordered, one beer drinker, one wine, and I had the cider. They also had the selection of the harder stuff, however don't go looking for a drink with an umbrella in it. If you give it some thought, what more do you need? read more

Came to oasis last night for my first time in a while. Bartender barley had her mask on which I guess that's fine but doesn't look good for business. We ordered two beers and a shot. I notice threw out the evening she didn't was her hands and she kinda looked stressed out! She's a older bald lady I mean we are in a pandemic but customers do notice if you didn't wash your hands. At the end of the bar there was a lady selling product to the bartender as well which I thought that was the strangest thing ever, like if you couldn't wait after your shift to receive or buy product seems a little ghetto! I get it we are at a dive bar but still. I notice they had Bacardi 151 which is strange because they don't sell that anywhere! I'm actually shocked they still had it on the shelf! So I ordered one shot to play a little prank on my friend! That shot is straight chemicals! Again I'm shocked they had it on the shelf. We took our shots ( I ordered whiskey) and he had the reaction I thought he would have..He took my beer drank it as fast as he could. I didn't know that shot hit him as bad as it did that he had to run to the restroom to let it all out. He ran to the restroom as fast as he could but made it into the hallway of the restroom where there was a trAsh can right there. He puked a little out which honestly it was my fault but most people have that reaction to that shot, out of nowhere the bartender is screaming for security and yelling on top of her lungs, " he's throwing up!!! Get him" I'm in disbelief this bartender would act in such manner. It's not like he was hurling and throwing up non stop he literally just let that out so fast I'm shocked she even saw. It's not like he threw up on the floor or missed the trash or anything as such! The way she acted was disgusting and I'm appalled she would treat a customer like that. Did we walk in drunk? Did we do anything in a manner for you to act the way you did? Nope! I mean I get it you were just unemployed due to this pandemic and haven't seen any action in a while, but my friend if you want a reaction we are not the people to really give it you. I once heard that nothing good happens after 2am. There's probably a very good reason that most bars close at 2am. But enter the Oasis (or the O for short). The O is the kind of classy establishment that stays open until 4am. Really kids, just go home. Nothing good can come from divulging in alcohol for two more hours. This spot is mostly all regulars. It's dive-y, but not dive-y enough to be fun. There's really not much to this place. And while the bartenders can be friendly to a regular, that's not the case with non-regulars. I've been to this place a few times. I was there in my college years. It hasn't changed in over 20 years. I'm not sure if it's the ambiance or the regulars that frequent the joint that will make you end up feeling indifferent. I have dubbed this bar the sixth circle of hell. But my friends and I keep coming back. Possibly because it's open until 4-5am, drinks are cheap, and there is the potential of doing horrible damage to one's liver and future here. "The O" is the kind of place that if you picked up a girl here, you wouldn't tell your friends about it as they wouldn't be able to look past the fact that you met in a dirty hole. God bless townie bars. Now, for those of you who don't know (which is... all of you), I grew up in a small town in Missouri. Everything closed at 9 p.m.--Except for you, Wal-Mart--and entertainment was slim for those of us who were old enough to drink, but young enough to manage multiple days of hangovers in a row. All we had were old fashioned townie bars and dives that dotted the spurs and side streets of our back-country roads. This bar is like a transplant of one of those nostalgia-triggering watering holes of my youth. I found this bar on accident late one Sunday night when I was out with me chums shredding some sweet riffs at a karaoke bar. Their night ended early (11:30, what??) and we scoured the internet looking for another place that did karaoke on a Sunday night. Oasis was the only one in RP that pulled a karaoke all-nighter, so off we went. Ladies and Gents, this place is divey as hell. Old school wrap-around bar setup, separate pool/dart area, classic arcade games, juke box, sports blaring from reitna-searing flatscreens above the bar, and absolutely zero pretension. My friends were put off by how townie and, yes, slightly grungy this place was, but my darling readers: THAT'S THE CHARM. This place is just a blue-collar-working-stiff-Norm-and-Jack-shootin-the-shit kind of bar. Not every place can--or should--be a Luxbar or a Sidetracks or any number of the other Gold Coast or Boystown shiny toy bars. The bartenders are attentive and kind, the drinks are affordable, even the karaoke isn't as invasive and watch-me-and-shut-up as most other places are. I applaud this joint. Is it slightly creepy? Sure. Has there most likely been a stabbing here at some point? Why not. Is there a really good chance that someone has shot up in the bathroom? Absolutely. But it's Rogers Park. Oasis is as close to the very best of old-school Chicago neighborhood dives as you'll find anymore. Please, let me tell you a story. My housemate and I had just moved into town turn of the millennium, and we were still partying something awful. We had a directory of places to hit between the Gold Coast and Rogers Park even before getting here, and we'd have probably missed this place, only a few blocks away from home, were it not for the neon beer signs in the window and the line to the carry-out booth at the front of the bar. In contrast to the fancy bars and clubs we'd been hitting up, this place was a dive, and a lively one. Sports played on the small screen TVs over the rectangle bar island in the middle of a smoky room, with three or four hardcore bartenders, in particular Gigi, who could project her voice across the noisiest crowd. If you acted like a halfway decent human being, she'd treat you with class; if you were a jerk, she let you know. Even crowded, if you sat at the bar and your glass or bottle was almost empty, one of the tenders, especially Gigi, checked if you were ready for another one. Drunks pelted darts at the boards, pinball machines pinged in the corner, the pool table held its own court, and after dark the place was standing-room stumbling until 4AM (5AM on Saturdays). Though clearly Bears and Cubs biased, this was a hockey bar in the Bill Wirtz era; there were as many Red Wings fans here as Blackhawks fans, and a Wings game could be caught consistently. They sold cheap beer buckets, inexpensive highballs and shots, basic smokes and fancy flavored tins of Camels; some of the regulars created clouds with cigars. That first night, my buddy and I had been at it the whole evening and were louder and wobblier than we probably should have been; before the evening was up, we found a large bouncer with thick glasses and a goatee standing behind us, and he let us know it was time for us to go. "What?" I slurred back. "You guys have had enough," he said, non-judgementally but with finality. "You're welcome back tomorrow night, but you gotta go tonight." His cool delivery inspired us to cooperate without hard feelings, and we did go back. Many times, for many years. I took friends, co-workers up to this place. It lived up to its late-night dive legend and everyone loved it as much as I did. Flash forward, right past 9/11, right past a recession, and the Illinois smoking ban. My housemate and myself pretty much got it all out of our system. We almost never go to bars anymore; no time, no inclination. On the rare occasion when we had the next day off and felt like getting out for the house, the last watering hole standing in our book was Oasis. Our most recent visit, the pool table was unmanned, one of the well-worn dartboards was subject to some aiming under the influence, and only about eight seats at the bar were populated. The smoky haze is gone, giving the place a cleaner feel, enhanced by replacement of the old TV tubes with brightly colored flat screens, still playing ESPN. Gigi's still there, manning the bar solo that night; she greeted us as we pushed through the swing doors and had our chilled glasses and tall boys on the bar before we settled into our stools (drinks are still cheap here; the tall cans are a deal). Joint thinly crowded, the jukebox, replaced by a digital player, still pumped out the same analog electric classic rock (which, by now, are probably golden oldies). We were still welcome to puff on our e-cigarettes (vapor, no smoke) while enjoying cold suds. Gigi held court, holding conversation from the center of the bar, and before long everyone sitting there were all talking across the place about everything from the Mayors Daley (Jr. and Sr.) to development around the Loyola campus (she literally introduced everyone at the bar to each other by name). I think she caught me eyeing the cylinder of pretzels by the register; before I even said anything, she scooped up a handful of sticks and served them in a cup between our glasses (alas, the bar pizzas are no more, but the pretzels are free). Then around two o'clock, things picked up with the younger crowd filing in, looking to continue their buzzes from the closing bars about the neighborhood (particularly Hamilton's down the street). Somehow, though the Loyola University kids have the normal personality disorders to get out of their youthful systems, they're not as obnoxious as your typical college crowd. I enjoyed watching the activity build, the dartboards feeling some love, the pool table finally being played, but finally it was time to go. "Good night, gentlemen," Gigi's voice projected over the noisy rejuvenation of the bar. "Don't wait so long before coming back!" I would rate a good dive bar a three, with a smile. Oasis is special enough to rate four stars, just by virtue of the longevity of its unique personality. That fifth star is for Gigi. I hate to admit this, but 13 years ago I walked into this bar and after a few drinks I thought, "I hope I never become a sad pathetic regular like these sacks of flesh who have lost all hope, drinking away the reality of their useless existence until the florescent lighting becomes the sun they shield their eyes from." *sigh* 13 years later... This is a neighborhood bar. It's a dive. Either you get it or you don't. You don't go here on dates. You don't go here for pleasantries or a spot of tea. It's a 4 o'clock bar with cheap beer. Gigi is absolutely outstanding and if you are a decent human being, you'll be treated as such. If you're an obnoxious a-hole, she'll tell you where you can go. Nicely and politely, of course - in a loud, shrill Cuban kind of way. I have met a variety of people in this bar. I met my first dysfunctional relationship. I met three of my very best friends still to this day. The women's bathroom is only one stall and god forbid a gaggle of sorostitutes manage to shove themselves in before you can empty your bladder. The men's room is scary - it just is. But there's a pool table, dart boards, a juke box and 4 out of 5 good, funny, and decent bartenders. Sometimes, they even have LIVE entertainment! Crackhead Tuesdays are always a blast when you're trying to have a cigarette outside and then you get to watch the door guy yelling at a hobo/prostitute/crackhead/all of the above to leave you alone to finish said smoke. Honestly, it's got its own strange Twilight Zone kind of ambiance. Either you get it or you don't. If you want something pretty, go downtown. ps - In regard to other reviews - sadly, I believe I know who is responsible for previous mention of gay-bashing. Oasis is definitely an interesting place. It's also definitely an odd mix of people. What I most like about Oasis, however, is that they don't pretend; they are indeed NOT pretentious. It is a total dive. The reason I can't give them more stars is simply because of that. I can neither say, "Yay! I'm a fan," nor "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" LOL But it is an alright hangout. Let's just say it's not a place I'd be proud to take mom, because it's rough around the edges, foul mouthed, often drunk filled, somewhat dank smelling, and even a little seedy at times. I've got to be honest, at first, I was nervous to enter. That said, it's a helluva lot better than the "college bar" just down the road, and once I got used to this place, I've always felt fine here. The bartenders treat me well, meaning normal, though I have seen them be crass, usually to their weird regulars. The service is fast and the prices are fair. It's a local watering hole. The music is good, not too loud, they have darts and pool tables too, and although it sometimes looks sketchy and dark, I've never had a problem here. In addition, although it's not a cute or pretty place, it's always been clean. In sum, Oasis can be crude, but I've never been treated rude. Haha! I'll be back. read more

Quicktake: Part liquor store, part dive. Lumpy dartboard and degenerate safehaven. After more popular Loyola bars such as Hamilton's close down, well then it's time for a drunken stumble off to Oasis. When you walk in you will see their liquor store/bars and 40's and hard liquor bottled all shelved up. The place has tile dirtier than an old tripped out Chinese restaurant. You know it's crazy when the dartboards are lumpy. Fortunately, there are about four or five dartboards if my drunken memory serves me correctly. There is a radiator in the room to keep you warm during cold winters and the place is usually packed with neighborhood Loyola kids who are not very good at darts. As 4am bars go, this is one of the better ones, but nothing I'd go far out of my way for unless I had a hankering for some 4am darts. Good luck finding parking, it is ridonk. read more

Oasis reminds me of a bar in the movies where the blue collar lead actor goes to drink his sorrows away after a breakup or career disaster - no music or TVs, just a stool, bar tender, and the drink. I walked down to this place on a whim to grab a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised. While this is VERY much a local dive bar, the staff was friendly and there are a couple of pool tables. There is almost a depressing atmosphere at times but you can't get a better price for a drink. Note: while they don't have food, you can order delivery to the bar. read more

What to say about this place? I guess the best advice I can give is to not go unless you are very very drunk. It is open late and the drinks are cheap but the place is dirty and gives off a unique odor. The pizza does taste amazing at 3 am but beware it is a Jacks frozen pizza- something you can make at home. Simply known as "The O" to anyone who lives in Rogers Park or went to Loyola. I once saw a guy from my home town there one night and when I asked him what he was doing at "The O", he said that he asked his friend whom he was visiting to take him to the biggest dive bar in the city and this is where they ended up. On seeing me there, he then asked what that said about me. Anyway, this is a 4/5am bar so if you want to drink late this is the place to go. There is also a significant amount of dart players and dart boards available with several leagues to join. They also have a pool table and a pool league. The lighting and ambience is terrible and you may need an oxygen mask to enter the restrooms but there is plenty of room and plenty of beers to choose from and a very diverse crowd. After about 1am on the weekends this place fills up with Loyola students after Hamilton's and the Pumping Company closes. Say hi to uncle Pauly. He will be the one of the first guys you see sitting at the end of the bar. UPDATE 6/13: Uncle Pauly died last week. read more

Oasis is a bar in the Loyola/Rogers Park area on Sheridan. I would not call it a great destination, but if you are in the area you can have a cheap drink, play darts or shoot pool. The drinks are so cheap that I did not have to pay for one. One random dude even tried to buy me a drink but I declined (I'm not used to dudes buying me drinks) and I may have inadvertently insulted him for this action. Perhaps he was a regular who likes to buy cheap drinks for strangers. The juke box works and the men's room is fairly clean, so kudos for these amenities. read more

Ok, so I have changed my mind about this place. I've been coming here more often on Monday nights just to relax and knock back a few cheap ones while catching up on some reading or chit chatting with a few other local patrons on my night off. The staff is as friendly as can be and are always fun to talk to. Drink prices are right on compared to some of the other spots in the area and there are always good specials. It's been a few years since I've been here, but I loved it when I was in Chicago. Of course it's a dive bar, but that's why it's awesome. I remember multiple nights hanging out here playing pool. I don't remember it ever getting crowded. Bartender was very cool. It's the type of place that fosters friendly bar relationships, rather than dodging sweaty armpits in a sea of frat boys. Sad to say, I've been here too many times. And once is already too many. Here's the scene: regulars that have been planted at the bar for almost 8 hours. Sloppy drunk undergrads. And a weird mix of others that don't fit into those two categories--I always fit into the 3rd group and I'm usually happy to leave. But, it is the most convenient (possibly only) 4am bar in Rogers Park...and once you've made it to 2am at other places and you've still got energy to carry on that conversation, this is the place you go. Like Meghan said, ending up at the "O" is both a win and a loss. It's surely the symbol that your bed will be showing up in the immediate future. read more

I shoot pool out of here for the APA, I know most of the bartenders, and it's cheap. So, biased? Perhaps, but you'll get that. It's a 4am bar, so after 2 it's a madhouse full of the drunk college students that just got kicked out of Hamilton's. Before that though it's usually very chill. 4 dart boards, and a 7 1/2 foot pool table. A bit of warning, lot of pool players there, so the table can get busy. But if you want to play come on by, we like a challenge. Keep in mind Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday there is a pool league that plays out of there. They are there every week, but if they are please don't ask to get on the table and then hover around like you're going to get next game, we don't usually end until 11 or later. It's a weird combination of locals bar and college bar - again, largely dependent on time of night. I've been in there several times and you see some Loyola senior that just got dumped who's pouring over his Old Style - and right next to him is some old guy doing the same thing. Weird, but usually a fun time. Just don't lock your bike up outside the bar, it will get stolen. read more
