Blue light is always a great time. I come here frequently. However whoever the security person checking for IDs was last night at 12am was extremely rude and unprofessional. I walked in with 2 friends. The security person was out of sight sitting down. My 2 friends didn't see him and walked in. He stands up and starts shouting "hey! Hey!" And immediately called them derogatory names. I told him it was no problem I will get them to come back to show their IDS. He didn't apologize and continued to look angry to a point where I felt very uncomfortable. Please have a talk with your employees about professionalism and respecting customers. Vibe was cool a lot of people so you can have your own fun, as a bar this isn't it. I had inconsistent charges for my multiple rounds. I was ordering mezcal neat all night, in the beginning of my night I had saw my bartender serve me 800 conejos but the product tasted like cheap tequila with no smoke, I later ordered the same at the bar next to it then got actual mezcal. This isn't cool and I believe there's something sketchy going on because when I went to the other bar again I got the same result with my order. If they're filling empty bottles with other inventory and selling it at the labeled price I believe it's illegal and false advertisement. Also every tab had an auto 20% gratuity. Keep this in mind when paying cash especially because it's not coherent when you don't have an itemized receipt presented. Their toast POS showed me I was paying 20% with options for 2-5% more to tip?! Cray when I am not even being served what I want. This place is a joke! The security guard/bouncer was allowing his friends go in before anyone in the line. When we were trying to get in they asked for a CREDIT CARD to get it. When we refused, they said "well then you can go now". What kind of business is this? Like who asks for a credit card to go inside? One of our friends complied and offered her card. When we get in, we were seated and were suppose to get taken care of, instead of getting our drinks from the bar. No lie, we waited 20 mins for the server to come. At this point we had enough and just got up and left. We went to the bar to get the Credit Card and the Bartender didn't even know what card was ours; She wasn't even aware we were sitting there. I've never seen anything go down here, though most that dislike it would think otherwise. If you bump someone don't be a dick about it, just say sorry and keep it moving. Most people are cool. It can be sweltering at times. The dance floor err meat viewing room is in the rear. So typical; people come out and onto it and then graze and gawk for too damn long. What to do when it's late night and your on the prowl. Right ? Great people watching. My favorite perch is a table which is opposite of the ladies room. Although as the night moves on, the chorizos are alert to it and then line up the hallway blocking view. WTF. Weekends are often filled with ladies in scantily clad outfits and legs for days. I said great people watching right? You will see the best and worst lines thrown at ladies. The best yet: Guy: Where you goin' girl? Gal: Home (The space between them now halved) Guy: Can I come? The lights go dim when the night lingers onwards so make sure your beer goggles are clean and working. I've seen some potential hookups end at the doorway. There is a bright light out there for the door man to check IDs. Plus, the entrance is right on the street, so one could spill out onto oncoming traffic. Try not to drink too heavily. There are a couple awesome bartenders which will give you a gracious pour for your cocktail. This spot is on my to do list when the night is late and I can do for one more drank. (That was on purpose) The weekend DJ is nutty bumpkins, son. That means the mix he's throwing out is off the chain. Usually something you could get out of your seat to move to or bob your head to. It alarms me a bit when some bars get a shitty record on Yelp. Like is it really that bad of a place or is it something else. Let's recap, heavy pours, decent prices, peoples of all colors which is not the typical Chicago bar crowd, whatever that is. Blue Light, oh Blue Light, crazy, crazy, Blue Light. Oh what trip to Underbar is complete without taking a step into the wild side into Blue Light? While my friends were smoking, I peeped cross the parking lot and saw a stack of dudes outside Blue Light smoking while a girl in a white cocktail dress came out of Blue Light looking like she got out of Studio 54 or some jazz. A bit more motivated, we marched in to Blue Light and met great opposition when we got inside as this bar was loud blasting B96 tracks with the peacoat mafia shuffling in and out and rubbing up on everyone. At one booth featured a girl giving a guy a lapdance while pregnant girls were abound hopefully NOT imbibing alcoholic beverages. Ethnicities of all kind were represented and Blue Light had a tinge of the UN all over it with a chance of international incidents. Despite the chaos and pandemonium, the bartender was quick to ask for drinks and I made note even though I am on drinking hiatus until April 2nd. We got our drinks and speared ahead forward into the vice locked line to push to the back room and the dance floor. It was even tighter there as one guy was humping his less than attractive date using freakdancing moves in the confined space. We pushed and continued to the very back where we found seats and room to breathe. Eventually the monkey show started to abate and there was actually room to dance. Unfortunately, no one in this bar was going to dance as it was a total sausage fest with an estimated 12 guys for every girl. Good for the ladies, bad for An Unstoppable!! In the corner where some people dancing in their seats, too lazy to get off their ass while someone left a giant, giant stein filled with margarita. When the lights came on and the bouncer started yelling for everyone to get out it was as if someone had unleashed a torrent of cockroaches out who all were scurrying to get away. The music was off, the lights were on and it was everyone's last chance to take off their beer goggles before making the wrong decisions that define drinking as dangerous. While waiting outside ugly dudes were hopping into cabs with ugly girls looking as if they had won the lottery. I couldn't help but wonder what the morning would bring them! read more

The song with this title by Bloc Party is a real crowd pleaser. Whenever the band breaks this one out, it's a really amazing performance with Kele Okereke bathed in the eponymous stage lighting and the crowd clapping along like they're at Reading or something. Simply a wonderful love song. Too bad the bar with the same title sucks so badly (and that Bloc Party can't sue for defamation of character). The bar Blue Light, full of douchebags and douchebagettes, would never be able to appreciate either the song "Blue Light" or the irony of it being played here while they try to hook up late night. Arriving just past 2:00 a.m., the modus operandi of Blue Light was very apparent. The DJ was spinning nothing but R&B hook-up music and it was a swirl of hair gel and cheap American beer. And that was just the chiller back room (which I shouldn't even mention since that might be the bar's only saving grace). The front room was a madhouse of people who seemingly couldn't make the pickup at the 2:00 a.m. Roscoe Village bars. There's apparently a better beer selection up front, but the back bar doesn't even serve Guinness (or even PBR, just Miller Lite and such). Drinking my Budweiser and listening to Ne-Yo, I couldn't even believe this place was on Western and was saddened that it seemed to be packed and wouldn't be closing down soon. Word on the street (from a former employee of this bar before its remodel into a giant douche) says this chad bar used to be better (though apparently still awful). They might have even played "Blue Light" at Blue Light at one point. read more

We were all told that 'it wouldn't change' with the new ownership. So I'm biased. I tried to give this place a chance, really I did. I will never come to this establishment ever again. I was looking forward to this "nice 4AM bar" that one of my co-workers has been talking up for the last few years. She and a few of my other co-workers called me up and had me drag my lazy butt to work at closing time so that we could go to this amazing Blue Light bar where the service is always great and the male bartender in the back always knows their orders. We all pile into cars and convince a couple other friends of ours who were already out to come meet up with us. Now, my coworkers are wearing tennis shoes and their work tops. I am wearing nice shoes and a nice top, but, hey, I wasn't the one serving beers all night. We meet up with our guy friends and us ladies get through the door, no problem. However, our male friends (who are Hispanic) are stopped at the door and told they can't enter. We ask why not and this huge European guy informs us that they are wearing tennis shoes. Seriously? The girls I was with were wearing tennis shoes too! We point this out, and then the big bouncer tells us that he doesn't like our male friends attitude. Those guys had maybe said two sentences asking why they couldn't come in. Hmm... me thinks this tis a race issue? My friend that comes there often asks the female bartender if she recognizes them b/c she and the guys had come there so many times before. The female bartender, about 5'5"-5'7" with brown hair then yells at her, "WHAT? I DON'T KNOW YOU! YOU LIAR!!" This was my first experience and I thought it would be awesome, but they lost all of our service that night. Not only that, but I always have friends coming into town and I will specifically tell them to avoid this late night spot. The only good thing to come out of that visit was the guy outside telling us where to park. He was really nice and he doesn't deserve to be standing outside in the freezing cold - send the fatass who doesn't like "attitude" out there, and maybe that jerk of a bartender who needs to learn some manners. Meh. It's a late nigh hookup bar/dance club. If that's your sort of thing, then it probably merits four stars. I came in here looking for a drink after a long night of work, and wasn't really impressed by the place. I can attest to the fights here that another reviewer mentioned though. So my ex used to go to this bar with coworkers (amongst other people I DIDN'T like), so he soured my taste for the place, but the new owners are awesome! The bartenders make my drinks just the way I like them. Most of the old locals were SUPER friendly, so I hope they stay and bring more of the same there. Despite their intimidating size (& glad of it 'cuz they keep the peace), the security guys are teddy bears! The new crowd is not much to my liking right now, but I'm hoping that's only temporary. My favorite time here was the last time I was here. My friend isn't the friendliest. I don't know why she let some drunk white girl sit down with us, let alone talked to her, but she did. (For the record, I'm the only drunk halfie she likes, and even that's debatable.) I was just sitting there quietly enjoying my beer when she pointed at me and started crying, because I didn't like her. Our conversation went something like this. (Looks at my friend and points at me) "She doesn't like me." "...uh, I didn't say anything to you." "YOU DON'T LIKE ME!!" "...alright then." Somehow, I ended up the shoulder she cried on when the guy who was getting her wasted and grinding on her left her for another girl. "BUT HE TOLD ME I WAS PRETTY!!!" Seriously, I don't know why my friend let her sit down with us. I may have inadvertently started a couple fights here. My bad? As long as you leave fast enough while guys are fighting, you're good to go. Other than that, Blue Light isn't completely awful. WORST. BAR. EVER. I miss the dive! It was always a great time, a great mix of people, and the busted darts were the greatest. I remember the carpet-covered stage in the back, and for some reason, I remember them having hula hoops on a few occassions. And a real glass??? Ppppsssshhh, no way! Plastic or nothing. AND NOW??? A place that's trying waaaay too hard to be something that it just isn't capable of being, EVER. Some of the bartenders are nice, but there is one absolute *sshole that was working the front bar a couple of months ago. He was rude and somehow managed to pour the WORST patron shots. How do you f*ck up straight patron??? Well, he managed to do so. And he also got p.o.'d when I called him out on pouring me the wrong cocktail. I'm never speding another dime in that dump. A few weeks ago I was out and randomly and met this guy from LA. It was his first time in Chicago and he had been here for 4 days and had only been exposed to the touristy bars and pubs in the city. He seemed a bit disappointed. After several drinks and a 2am closing at the location where we met, he asked if there were 4 am bars here in Chicago. I said hell yeah, let's go. Of course then I have to put my money where my mouth was-and think real hard about where the closest 4am bar is to my place...first one that came to mind: Blue Light. For months I have driven past this place, dying to know what it is all about. I've just been so curious and promised myself someday I would make it there. We arrived around 2:30am, we were dressed pretty trendy-I had on my favorite Zara Skinny Jean, with a large cuff, black fitted jacket and these amazing, leopard print heals. He of course, being from LA, looked amazing! He had on this great button down, with a real casual cord blazer, a great pair of jeans and a really cool scarf. So we walk in, and immediately look at each other and laughed. Not only were we the tallest folks in the bar (he is 6'2" & with heals I was 5'10") we were the whitest. This can be a little intimidating at times, but we had already been drinking and could have cared less. We headed to the bar, got our bourbons and just took the atmosphere in. Then we noticed the backroom. Once we got back there and realized it was a dance floor and they were playing awesome rap, we were geeked. We spent the next 1.5 just chilling to the music and in our own little world. We were feeling it that night. Lots of PDA going on around us, so we felt very comfortable being together--like I said, in our own little world! The patrons of the bar seemed like a tough crowd, nobody I would want to start shit with, but on the other hand there were no fights and didn't seem to be any issues while we were there. As much as we stuck out like sore thumbs, nobody cared. The bartenders were prompt, friendly and seemed cool. I will definitely be returning to Blue Light, but probably only with a male chaperone or a group with girls and guys (wishing my LA date would return to go back with me!). I've seen this place's cool sign from the Western overpass for years. I decided to stop in Tuesday night yesterday after leaving another bar. Me and my buddy were going there for the first time to check it out. I waited at the bar to place a drink order but the bartenders were too busy on their phones or chatting up their buddies to notice. Place was not that busy either. Actually the old Bluelight didn't have that many cops hanging around like Paul & Joes (which is now Underbar) did. But now it's no longer a dive, which I liked. It's all new, new golf and bowling games, so now there are cops o'plenty just for that golf game. I went Wed. and it was a good time, my friend was DJing great music, pretty good crowd and lots of cops. Which isn't always a bad thing. Worth checking out and 3 damn nice bathrooms! Thank God!! Usually at 2:30am on a Saturday morning, slugging down PBR and trying to keep my head up. I always end up at Blue Light when I am shitfaced drunk and should have been taken home, probably hours before I came in the door. We came here for my birthday after we closed the Bob Inn. Me and about 10 of my friends proceeded to have them open the back so we could take that bitch over. We stayed in the back corner 'till they literally turned the lights on and herded us out the front door. In that time, I saw two of my friends get friendly, two of my friends argue loudly, and me and my friend almost fight some douchebag who tried to grab my other friends ass. And I did this all while constatly holding full whisky shots in each hand. Man, it was a kick ass time. Now all my friends say they'll go out, "as long as we don't end up at Blue Light."
