This place is a hidden gem…read more We got caught in a snow storm on the way to Denver from San Diego. We'd spent the night in Albuquerque, and this was the last leg of the journey to Denver. But then we got into almost zero visibility on the i25 North, and even my Denver friend who was driving the Uhaul said it was too much. Since I was driving a tiny VW Golf and from sunny San Diego, I was all for stopping for an unscheduled night. But I had my dog with me! We got off the freeway (barely), turned around, and headed 15 miles south to where there were a couple of motels. I had called a different one originally, and I don't want to waste time discussing that one other than to say it may have been the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." We had driven past The Broken Arrow Motel on the way to see that Norman Bates fiasco, so I said let's just go back there. I ran inside and the nice man said yes, they accepted dogs in certain rooms, and he had two rooms available--one of which I could have my dog in. Hurray! The rooms all face the parking lot, like the old school motel ("motor hotel" is where the word comes from I believe). The rooms were clean and fresh. These are not luxurious digs, but no one should be expecting luxury in Springer, NM. The whole place is rustic; these are modest accommodations, but someone has taken GREAT CARE with the little touches: Folgers coffee, coffee maker, and creams/sugars in each room. A fridge. Little toiletries with the washcloth folded into the design of a fan next to the sink. A radiator that was great for hanging your socks on so that your feet were toasty, but also a wall heater that kept the room cozy and warm. There was a nice big heavy mug to have coffee in, plus extra paper cups and plastic cups. My friend had a bottle of Scotch and the proprietor gave him a bag of ice; we made Irish coffee and watched the snow storm. It was my black Lab's first snow and he loved it! The whole town seems lacking in cell service, and until I figured out the motel had wifi, I was standing in the street with my new iPhone software showing me where to point my phone to catch the satellite to send messages alerting of our delay (literally a video of a satellite in the sky with a beam coming down, a dot representing me, and arrows showing me which way to turn to catch the satellite signal! Who knew?) Then I realized there were directions on how to connect to wifi in the room. Duh. The wifi was a bit spotty, but honestly it added to the rustic feeling and it was all just a big adventure. It's relaxing to be a bit disconnected. It was great having the car right in front of the room, because on these long trips you're forever forgetting something in the car, and you can just run out in your PJs instead of having to walk down halls and down elevators. The restaurant across the street had delicious food. Gas station two doors down with snacks and gas for the continuation of your trip. If you are on a long trip and planning stops, or even decide you need to stop for the night for whatever reason, please visit this quaint motel. By the way when I first called there was no answer; I think, again, there is a cell service issue in the town. Don't let that stop you! Just show up. I so badly wish we'd stayed there instead of the Marriott in Albuquerque!

I even asked and saw several other people ask about more cinnamon rolls and biscuits and gravy and was told no there would not be more put out. I know one mom with small children was disappointed and then the muffins ran out too. If breakfast is posted until 9:30!then all items should be available until then. Or at least about 9:15 then start cutting it off. I think the employee wanted to get everything cleaned up and be out of there by 9:30.

During our stay, the hotel was nearly empty, which made the long second-floor hallway, old doors, creaking floors, and deep silence feel especially dramatic. At one point, I caught the unmistakable scent of rose perfume in the hallway. It appeared for only a second and then vanished completely. The hotel has long been associated with stories of unexplained rose fragrance, and experiencing it firsthand was unforgettable. Later that evening, four frightened college students asked us to investigate noises and a shadow they believed they had seen in their room. We found nothing supernatural, but they were frightened enough to leave the hotel in the middle of the night. Our own qualifications as paranormal investigators were somewhat compromised by martinis. I also searched unsuccessfully for a rumored trap door beneath the carpet and managed a brief look into the hotel's supposedly forbidden room. No ghosts appeared, but I did emerge from the carpet covered in decades of dust. The entire experience was funny, eerie, memorable, and completely unique to the St. James, and I have returned several times. What stays with me most is the feeling of the place. Partner had a steak--said it was ok. "Seasonal vegetables" were just plain kernal corn. Giving this place three stars for food, but the historic charm is the real reason to give it a try. The restaurant was only open Thursday through Saturday in February, so check hours if you want to eat. You can also just stop by and take a look in the lobby and parts of the hotel. I'm not saying YOU shouldn't stay here but I am saying we will NEVER stay here again…read more Backstory:  We stayed here for the 1st time last year and LOVED it, we loved the "cabin", the location; it was right by the grill, right next to the gazebo, across the street from the shopping, it was perfect for us.  We made plans to go to eagle nest again this year and made reservations in FEBRUARY and specifically asked for the same cabins and were told no problem.  We go to check in TUESDAY, August 11th  to stay until sSaturday and get placed in a different set of cabins.  When we told the office lady we'd reserved the end cabins months ago, she looked and stated that while we may have requested the same cabins, we were never actually booked in to those (and the guy we'd spoken to at the time was no longer with the company (conveniently)).  And now the cabins we requested were going to be occupied on FRIDAY.  I asked could the people coming Friday just not be placed in the cabins we were trying to be given since they weren't coming until Friday and here it is Tuesday and we're there now, she stated NO, the guy coming Friday was the Mattress King (not his real name but he does own some mattress company) and he was bringing them a sample of a mattress to consider using for the lodges.  She was adamant on not allowing us the cabins we'd requested literally MONTHS ago for this reason. Current situation:  So we take the cabins she can give us and no mention was made at check in about there being a burn ban.  We grilled on a charcoal grill that we brought and had no issues that 1st night.  2nd night our friend that we're there with ( a disabled US veteran with bad hearing) is again grilling and the check in lady rolls up in her little golf cart, asked the friend a question, which he did not really hear what she was asking and the rest of us weren't paying attention,  so he just replied something like "yup" or "yeah" and she rolled away.  Next morning we get asked to leave the premises because supposedly what she'd asked our friend was "is that a propane grill?  Cause there's a burn ban and you can't use charcoal".  I mean, how does she roll up on us and can't tell the difference between a propane and charcoal grill, do you SEE a big ass propane tank under there?   So what happened was, approximately 15 hours after grilling, our friend threw the cold charcoal ashes in a trash bag, walked it to the dumpster and then unbeknownst to him, started the dumpster on fire.  Now I ask you, if the ashes were hot enough still to start the dumpster on fire, don't you think the ashes would've burned right through that plastic trash bag too?   When we tried to reason with the check in lady, she was unreasonable and refused to listen to us.  The biggest issue being WE WEREN'T INFORMED OF A BURN BAN WHEN WE CHECKED IN, we're from out of town, how are we supposed to know this?   When we tried to explain that the guy she asked about the grill has a hearing disability (documented by the US Government) she refused to listen to reason, stated her boss wanted us out and refused to refund us the money for the last 2 nights we weren't going to be there.  It's disgusting that 2 disabled US veterans were treated so poorly, and before you ask, yes she did know they're veterans because we asked if they offered a military discount.  And lastly, when we moved to the place literally across the street from laguna vista, this bitch had the gall to call those owners and tell them she had to kick us out for starting her dumpster on fire, acting like we'd purposely lit a match to it, I'm assuming to try to get us kicked out of there.  Didn't work though Karen, I mean Leanne, or whatever the hell your name is.

The exit from I 25 was well lit and we were able to find Springer station easily and quickly even in wideout conditions. This building is full of history since it was the old train people depot. We appreciate the architecture and how they have kept its historical charm. There are people out there like myself who love to see accommodations with character. I'm so over modern this blah blah blah modern that. GIVE ME A PLACE LIKE SPRINGER STATION! I love it! some other great highlights of this stay. Fast Wi-Fi., They have food available down at the lobby, filtered water in the lobby, clean bedrooms, clean towels, a mini fridge in the room, a tv, and the most comfortable beds you can sleep on. Once we arrived the girl at the front desk was helping us as soon as we walked through the door. Some reviews say the door dosnt lock but I does and the door gets stuck so that's extra protection. The lobby look like a hoarders house with the staff break room being the only thing organized. The upstairs had trash everywhere and smelt like spaghettios. The upside is they had monster energy in the fridge to purchase. Would not recommend for multiple nights but great for just one. Room was very hot.
