When we had to rush our dying beloved family dog to him because she suddenly crashed while waiting for our at-home euthanasia appointment, he showed nothing but arrogance, annoyance and complete lack of compassion for both our much loved Maddie and our grieving family. The fact that he was greatly annoyed that he had to put her to sleep on such short notice was palpable. He acted as if we were bothering him and he was doing us such a great favor. He even roughly shoved her head over to the side while trying to find a vein in the only front leg that she had. She was still awake while he did this, and it was all I could do not to say something to him at that moment. I wouldn't recommend this vet or his clinic if he were the last one on the planet. Dr. Bodman should not be allowed to work with ANY animal, let alone someone's family member, as we considered our dear Maddie.

On Thursday he was worse. I called the office asking for Dr Carroll to call me so I could know what my next steps should be. The girl said he'd be in later that afternoon. He never called. On Friday the girl called first thing in the morning and asked if he improved. I said no. She said Dr Carroll would call in between visits. I called again later in the day to see if he available and she was condescending saying he'll call when he can. They close at 6pm so I called at 5:50pm to make sure he didn't forget. She calmly said, unfortunately he left already!! My cat was so bad he came out from under the bed once but immediately ran back upstairs under the bed and had stayed there all day! I was furious! I was yelling! She was so condescending and just acted like a victim because I was yelling while never apologizing! I asked for the manager. I was put on hold for 10 minutes and she came back saying the manager left and the owner could call me the next day. I said obviously they don't give a **** about us and we will go elsewhere! I got wonderful help and care at Berkley Vet Center who were compassionate and caring. They didn't have an appointment available but referred me to Garden State Animal Hospital in Toms River. My boy Lou got excellent care and the treatment he needed, and he is doing great today with proper medication! In the future my new vet will be Berkley Vet Center. I prefer a holistic approach, but it's hard when In my experience many holistic vets don't want to deal with the mainstream side of medicine (tests, procedures, medication, etc.) when just managing the holistic side is a full-time job. As a result, I usually have to have two vets and they don't always agree on a treatment approach, which can be a problem. But somehow, Dr. M manages to do both and make it look effortless. It's the ultimate one-stop shopping for pet care. She offers cutting edge technology that I was not able to find anywhere else so I gladly made the three-hour round trip from my home. And look forward to doing it again anytime I need to. I appreciate that she is so knowledgeable and generously shares that knowledge - talking to her is like chatting with a friend, a brilliant friend. As busy as she is, she never makes you feel rushed and gives you all the time you need. The whole staff is amazing - shout out Anthony, Laura and Danica! Everyone is kind, compassionate and friendly, and the office is so homey it makes you feel like you're going to visit friends who just happen to be amazingly talented. Thank you all so much for taking such good care of my Riley.

I had a troubling experience at Southern Ocean Animal Hospital and feel it's important to share so…read moreother pet owners can make informed choices. The visit involved our family's young puppy, who had a single fractured tooth. I was present, responsible for the puppy's care, and fully engaged in the appointment. The clinic recommended a full dental cleaning, X-rays, and up to three possible extractions--a plan that felt excessive, especially for a puppy. I sought second and third opinions from other licensed veterinarians. All of them agreed the original recommendation was unnecessary. The issue was resolved with one simple extraction--no full cleaning, no X-rays, no multiple extractions--at half the cost and with far less stress to our pet. This was never about money--it was about care. I chose not to proceed because the clinic's plan didn't align with standard veterinary practice. In addition to the aggressive treatment plan, I was disturbed by how I was treated when I asked questions. When I requested a clear explanation and an estimate, the practice manager (who is also the co-owner and the veterinarian's spouse) became visibly irritated and abruptly walked out of the room without answering or providing a quote. That level of unprofessionalism was shocking and disrespectful. What followed was even more concerning: an emotionally charged, unprofessional phone call from the veterinarian, in which he raised his voice and defended his staff rather than addressing my concerns with objectivity or care. I also question the clinic's ethics. They later referenced what they claimed was surveillance footage and quoted my child (inaccurately) from inside the exam room--raising serious privacy concerns. And while the practice manager is described as a "scientist," I could find no public licensure or credentials listed. If such titles are being used, transparency is essential. As a professional and an attentive pet owner, I expect respectful, informed, and compassionate care. That is not what I experienced here. Veterinary care should be rooted in medical necessity, empathy, and ethical conduct--not personal defensiveness or intimidation. Our pets deserve better. And so do the people who advocate for them.

If I could give negative stars, I would. I brought my 2-year-old kitten Pearl to Southern Ocean…read moreAnimal Hospital for help on October 23, 2024, because she was suddenly and seriously unwell. What I thought would be a simple vet visit turned into a nightmare I'm still trying to recover from. No Consent, No Estimate, Just a $750 Bill Once at the vet, I was never given an estimate or consent form outlining the cost of the procedures they planned to perform. I was emotionally vulnerable and desperate to help my cat. They ran tests and gave treatments without telling me what anything would cost, then handed me a $750 bill I had no way of anticipating. I asked if we could work out a payment plan and they refused. I paid the $200 I had on me and explained that I would come back the next day with the rest. Police Threats Over a Google Review What happened next was surreal: I received a call from the local police saying I'd be charged with "theft of services" if I didn't pay the remaining $450 (after they removed the cost of a specialty cat food the vet tried to sell me) by the next morning. Then I found out that the vet had called the police not because I hadn't paid in full yet (despite leaving a deposit and promising to return), but because they were angry I had left a 1-star Google review. Posting a completely unprofessional reply to my review filled with personal attacks and lies about me wasn't enough for them--they actually called the police on me and had a lawyer send a threatening letter demanding I take it down. This is a blatant misuse of the legal system to intimidate and harass me, all in an attempt to silence a truthful review and violate my First Amendment right to speak out. The receptionist even confronted my partner while he paid the remaining balance for me and accused me of "defamation," implying that they would still be coming after me for retaliation over my review. This was after receiving the full payment within 24 hours as agreed. Refused to Release My Cat's Records Even though they received full payment the very next day, Southern Ocean Animal Hospital still refused to release Pearl's medical records to another clinic weeks later. Whatever they said about me during their call with St. Francis Vet led to that clinic--despite our longstanding relationship--also refusing to treat Pearl. This caused a heartbreaking delay in the care she urgently needed and prolonged her suffering during an already critical time. With nowhere to turn and now being blacklisted by my usual vet, I had to enlist the help of family members to get treatment for Pearl. She was getting worse. The other vet and my family made the decision to end Pearl's suffering on November 5. I was starting a new job, and mourning my dying cat while trying to navigate threats of legal action and intimidation from the same people who were supposed to help her. They Billed Me for a Test They Didn't Even Complete Southern Ocean Animal Hospital charged me $68 for a fecal test but never completed it. I was given a specimen cup to bring back but never allowed to return with a sample -- and they still billed me for it. The police officer called after I made the payment to thank us for clearing the matter up so quickly and also mentioned that SOAH was upset about the Google review and I wasn't allowed back. That is fine--I would absolutely never return there, but I should be reimbursed for the test that they never completed. On top of that, they shorted me on the medication I paid for upon returning to pay the balance, which contributed to Pearl's continued decline and unnecessary suffering. What They Did Was Heartless and Vindictive When I contacted legal counsel, even the representative was shocked. They confirmed there was no legal basis for the threats I received, and that withholding records like this can be a serious ethical concern -- especially when it impacts an animal's care. Pearl had to be euthanized shortly after being seen by Southern Ocean Animal Hospital. I'll never get that time back, and I can't help but wonder if she could have been saved or suffered less if I'd taken her anywhere else. I've reported this business to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. I urge anyone reading this to think twice before trusting them with your pet -- especially if you're vulnerable, grieving, or financially constrained. I came to them for help, and instead I was bullied, overbilled, threatened, and gaslit -- all while watching my kitten suffer and die.

Lastly, she does little things that make you appreciate not only her approach with your beloved pet, but her value as a business person. She will use generics where possible, as opposed to most vets who will cash in on selling brand names. She will, at times, sell you things for her cost or VERY close to it.
