Dog heaven! Free and open beach for dogs and their parents to run free and frolic in the ocean. Free parking on street and in lot, we actually stayed in a condo right next to the parking lot and it had a back gate so we had easy access to the beach. Yes, agree with other reviews about the dog pee stench as you enter the beach area but once you are either on the grassy area or on the beach, you don't smell it...limited to the entrance area. The beach is nice and for the most part parents were on top of cleaning up after their dogs. There were some dogs running free with no immediate supervision so there were poo piles here and there. There are signs at the entrance warning about bacteria in the water, which makes sense given you have tons of doggies peeing and pooping in the water. There were plenty of people swimming and surfing so it didn't seem to bother some. The weekend gets very very busy so be aware. Our girls enjoyed their week at the beach! read more

My dogs love this beach! They can run, swim, and play freely. The beach is clean and well maintained. My dogs like splashing in the waves and play hard until they tire out. The various dogs and their owners we have met here seem friendly and we haven't had any issues. Parking here is tricky; there is a lot, but it's always full, and the beach can be very crowded, even after 6 pm. You will have an easier time finding parking in a residential neighborhood further down and walking since this area is very walkable. read more

We were in town for a quick visit and came to this beach - sans dog. We were still welcome. In retrospect, bringing a toddler to a dog beach was probably not my smartest parenting move, but she stayed up in our arms the whole time so it was a nonissue (and also a bicep workout). My own pup is too reactive to come to an unstructured setting like this, unfortunately. This beach is surprisingly clean considering the target audience. Other visitors were great, and we weren't the only family with a small kid. Free parking (street and lot) was fairly easy to find on a weekday afternoon despite it being pretty busy. I really appreciate how well behaved the dogs were and how attentive owners were, there were no issues. read more

What. A. Treat! Took my doodle, Kai, for her first ever visit to the ocean! She ran and ran on this unleashed dog beach for an hour the first morning and many more the next 3 days! Met all kinds of dogs with their hoomans and had the friendliest and funnest interactions. Everyone was chill and easygoing regarding their dogs. We all cleaned up messes quickly and trash cans easily accessible. Everyone hoomans wise either playing with, walking alongside. Chasing, or talking with other hoomans . This is truly dog heaven!! So glad we stayed the closest you can to this beach as it was a 3 minute walk from our hotel room! A San Diego favorite! For pup lovers everywhere, Ocean Beach Dog Beach is heaven. It's a big, sandy stretch where dogs run the place and humans simply tag along. No leashes and no pretense. Just pups of all ages and all kids running wild along the Pacific shoreline. You'll see golden retrievers, pit bulls, Min Pins, poodles, Chihuahuas, French bulldogs, German shepherds, so many labs and Goldens sprinting, rolling and splashing and having a grand time. Ever so often there is an irresponsible owner either not paying attention to or picking up their pup's mess. And sometimes a fight (seldom in my years of visiting here). What you will see more often than not is a pup using the actual ocean as their toilet. Other than those things, this place is perfect. The beach itself is long, open and often busy with more pups then humans. High tide, low tide -- it really does not matter. And it is pure entertainment. My favorite is when people (myself included) come without any pups and spend the day sunbathing and swimming. And there have been many times our pups have made good friends with others (Frank, where are you?!). Overall, it is a very friendly and wholesome place to be. It gets insanely busy in the summer, especially the parking lot, so we usually forego and wait for local summer. The bathrooms are way on the other side, so plan accordingly. And there are trash cans on the actual beach, but no bags (grab some out front, or bring your own). And be careful. The current gets very strong and it has happened a number of times that a dog and human have gotten swept away. Keep an eye on your pup, pick up and enjoy. read more

I brought my 11-month-old Pitbull puppy here and he had such a great time! So many fur babies running around, unleashed in their own paradise. I kept my pup leashed as it was his 1st time. Everyone there was super friendly and understanding. I loved seeing responsible dog owners throughout. The beach is clean and has free parking. My absolute favorite place to take my dog. It's chaotic, sandy, loud, and completely wonderful. You'll meet tons of friendly people and even friendlier dogs. Be prepared, though--this isn't your chill, quiet beach day. You can lay out on the sand, but just know you're gonna get splashed, slobbered on, and probably have a few dogs kick sand all over your towel. It's part of the charm. A game of fetch quickly turns into a community event with three other dogs joining in. Sure, it's messier than your average dog park, but it's also way more fun. A dog's paradise! There's a large parking lot available and a considerable amount of space edged by the ocean and channel for your pups to play. After visiting Ocean Beach with my sister and her dog, we made sure he got some time to play in his favorite place in the San Diego area. My gf and sister took him way out across the expanse. So far, in fact, that I lost sight of them! I was wearing socks and shoes and didn't want to remove them. Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself immensely sitting on a bench dog-watching. My favorite place to come with my dogs. San Diego is very dog friendly but this is a special piece of heaven if you have dogs. I usually travel from LA and stay near this beach with my dogs. I've been coming here since I first adopted them and now they are 16 and 12 years old and can't run so much on the beach but love walking here with me. This beach is filled with amazing people with friendly dogs: all shapes and sizes, friendly people and amazing energy. I've come at 8 am and as late as 5 pm and I'm alway happy to come here with my dogs. I've always walked her but there is plenty of free parking. If I ever leave LA and move to San Diego permanently, this dog beach would be a main reason for me! MY DOG'S HAPPY PLACE (5 stars) This place has really grown on me. Especially my dog! My little fur ball is a rescue, fearful yet protective. Through the years her confidence has built and she can now roam this beach like she owns it. We are regulars and a lot of people know her as the "pink shark pom". We do visit other beaches but this one hits differently! I get a lot of questions and asks from other dog owners about safety and logistics before bringing their small dog here. It's pretty safe but I would still keep a very close eye and keep close to your small animals as there are ALOT of large dogs roaming freely. Sometimes some big dogs do approach a little too playful for my senior dog and she gets scare and protective and I do have to grab her and carry her in my arms. Most of the big dogs are at the front part of the beach and it gets less congested when you walk north. I'd say 97% dog owners are responsible, but I have seen a few where dogs get a little rough or dogs chase smaller dogs towards the parking lot (they can get hit by cars that way) and the owner doesn't do much to stop the chasing or separating. Just be mindful this is a leash free beach and anything is possible. Smaller pets should be watched carefully and do your part to protect your fur family member - don't get too "trusty". I love how this place seems to be bigger or just as big as the human beach next to it. A lot of non-dog people spend time at this part of the beach and it's comforting that people feel comfortable around all these leash free dogs. After 6pm dogs can go to the other beach where it's human only most of the day. As a rescue, I feel place has truly helped my dog opened up!!! read more

The Ocean Beach Dog Beach is one of my dog's favorite places. The OB Dog Beach is shaped like a triangle where one side is the parking lot, another is the Ocean, and the third is the San Diego River, with a large sand area in the middle. The off leash area is big and includes soft flat sand, and both ocean and river access. Dogs love chasing a ball into the water on a hot day. Pro tip: bring a towel and head to the grassy area for a good wipe down before heading to your car, and take a dog water dish for your car because your pup will be thirsty afterwards. There are two main negatives... the parking lot is small and crowded so you might need to circle around or even park on the street and walk in (but don't worry, the lack of parking spots does not mean the sand or water will be over crowded because it is plenty big. The other negative is the overwhelmingly strong pee smell as you walk down the sidewalk to the pedestrian entrance (it is a dog park, after all). That being said, I keep going back. Okay, there are a couple other hazards that are a given at a dog beach: you will have sand in your car afterwards (but that is a sign of a good day), it is a dog beach, which means that dogs will use the beach as their restroom, but most owners who care enough to take their dogs there will pick up after them so I have yet to see a pile of No. 2, and you do run the risk of other dogs not playing nice (but I have not seen that happen either). read more

We drive all the way from Lake Elsinore to come to this beach. Wide open beach, protected by break walls, well groomed, sandy, easy to walk in/run. Guards on duty on weekends when we go. Parking is free and usually get a spot. All dogs are friendly, people pick up after them which is key as many at our dog park are assholes who don't clean up after their dogs. read more

It's taken me this long to finally write a review of this dog beach. I lived in san diego for most of my life and I've brought all my dogs here. I have 4 dogs now but never had less than 2 dogs all my life. My longest living dog, neko loved it here. Neko was 20 when he passed. When I first brought neko he loved it. Surprisingly the beach is huge and the pet owners are very respectful. Neko is a medium size dog. Maybe 70lbs or so. The other dogs there were mainly huge dogs! I've noticed coming here frequently that often times there were much bigger dogs. What's cool is that I brought all 3 of my dogs at one time. Neko was already getting old and taka was a 110lbs young Siberia husky. Hana the smaller of my dogs at 50lbs joined us. My dogs didn't get anxiety at OB dog beach. The other owners were aware of their own dogs and poop! So my 3 dogs got to run around with their leash in the wet sand. It's definitely nice to see them around other dogs and not hostile. Now taka is 135lbs so he's a bit intimidating. I just like the beach so much, due to the size and it being pretty clean most times. This is also attributed by the pet owners. They are so nice and they are carrying poopie bags. read more

Loved it, especially for my girls. I lost one this past Friday (white one) to IMHA. I am so grateful that I took them to California from Nevada and they were both born in NM. My one is older and I was doing it for her because of all the personal crap we've been through but it seems like the crap hasn't ended. Anyways it's a great place to take your dogs as long as your dogs are socialized and you are able to let them have fun. I say this because we ran across this guy with his pug and he wouldn't let it off the leash and would pull unnecessarily at it causing other dogs to react to the pug. What an idiot but there has to be one in every bunch. It's huge there, parking is a little hairy, but it was a great experience, especially the memories now. Thank you! read more

One of our favorite dog beaches here in San Diego! We came here early Saturday morning a little before 8am and luckily found parking. Keep in mind the parking lot fills up quick especially on the weekends. This dog beach is located right next to Ocean Beach but there is a designated off leash dog area for the dogs to roam around. Our dog loved this beach since the water was very shallow and a huge area to run around. No one was swimming in the water when we went, so we assumed this beach was just for the dogs. There are trash cans available throughout the beach but remember to bring your doggy bags to keep the beach clean! All dogs are welcome but remember dog etiquette when coming here! My furbaby Niko said 5 stars for sure! This was our 2nd visit here, both times were on his birthday. My first visit last year was a little overwhelming. He stayed on the leash. This year no leash and he loved every minute of it. I went after work and found parking right away. All the doggies were so nice and Niko had a great time. There was a horrendous smell going on near the jetty, but In by same area I saw plenty of fish jumping out the water which I thought was pretty cool. We've been coming here for years, and now we actually have a dog! Much, much better than Rosie's Beach in Long Beach that we just went to; also better than the Del Mar Dog Beach. You can read other reviews for more details. We've just always loved it and the entire surrounding area. This is where we always take visitors. Then down to Sunset Cliffs and Point Loma. One day I want to explore the Mission Beach area but honestly it seems flat and boring and the OB seems prettier and with more personality. read more

I finally made it to Dog Beach!! I was missing the company of my dog, so my manfriend took me to Ocean Beach (Dog Beach) in July 2021. Parking can be a little challenging, so definitely some patience required. But all is forgiven as soon as I step onto the beach. OH MY GOODNESS. Of course there's poop in the water there's dogs everywhere and I'm sure some things cannot be contained. There's a cool calm area for dogs/people to jump in and then there's the ocean waves to enjoy, jump in and fun to watch too. 10/10 your dog and you will have the best time.
