You need some dopamine? Your dog needs some dopamine? Look no further, this is your go to spot! Dogs, dogs, dogs, everywhere, hence the ocean beach dog beach name. This was our first time here and we weren't sure what to expect but what an awesome beach where dogs can be off leash and go crazy. This is basically like a playground for dogs to have fun, socialize with other dogs, and get some water time in. It was super cool to see people come together and let the fur babies play.

I brought my 11-month-old Pitbull puppy here and he had such a great time! So many fur babies running around, unleashed in their own paradise. I kept my pup leashed as it was his 1st time. Everyone there was super friendly and understanding. I loved seeing responsible dog owners throughout. The beach is clean and has free parking. I recommend getting there early to make sure you find a parking spot without hassle. I will definitely bring my dog here again as we had a beautiful day.

What a nice and clean dog beach! The sand was so soft and there was a lot of space for your fur baby to run around and mingle. My family had a great time just wading in the water and watching all the dogs play including ours. Will definitely be back here when we are back in town.

Great spot to bring a dog! Very walkable to local food spots. More of a walking beach, would not recommend setting up a blanket since there are a lot of people and dogs running around

Dear beautifulbig Husky dog, my dog is smitten. Barky: "Thanks for the kiss!" When people and pets get along with each other, it makes me smile.:) My little rescue pet pal is scared of other dogs, he's had a tough life! But the veteran beach dogs here gave him a warm welcome and even a big hug! I left a few peace signs in the sand in your honor. I hope we can all learn to be as welcoming to others as the big beautiful beach dogs here. Five stars.******

LOVE that no leash is required and can play in the ocean with your furry friend Dogs here were well mannered and the dog parents were attentive on our visits. Parking is free (but you may need to walk just a little.

I love dogs!!!‍ My client, and I had a nice time petting all kinds of dogs. There was the pug whose name was potato and she definitely looked like a round potato. They have doggy bags, but you should bring your own Water and the surf is up!‍ Six o'clock p m.

Our dog loved the atmosphere, easy surf with tiny waves, all the other dogs and sunshine. Perfect spot for an outing with your baby.

A dog's paradise! There's a large parking lot available and a considerable amount of space edged by the ocean and channel for your pups to play. After visiting Ocean Beach with my sister and her dog, we made sure he got some time to play in his favorite place in the San Diego area. My gf and sister took him way out across the expanse. So far, in fact, that I lost sight of them! I was wearing socks and shoes and didn't want to remove them. Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself immensely sitting on a bench dog-watching. So fun to see the different types of dogs and behaviors. This is a popular spot, and little Jasper made a friend along the way.

My 16 year old dog loves coming here with me! One of the best dog beaches in California

My favorite place to come with my dogs. San Diego is very dog friendly but this is a special piece of heaven if you have dogs. I usually travel from LA and stay near this beach with my dogs. I've been coming here since I first adopted them and now they are 16 and 12 years old and can't run so much on the beach but love walking here with me. This beach is filled with amazing people with friendly dogs: all shapes and sizes, friendly people and amazing energy. I've come at 8 am and as late as 5 pm and I'm alway happy to come here with my dogs. I've always walked her but there is plenty of free parking. If I ever leave LA and move to San Diego permanently, this dog beach would be a main reason for me! If you have dogs, come here and enjoy the lovely and clean beach and mingle with other dog lovers.

MY DOG'S HAPPY PLACE (5 stars) This place has really grown on me. Especially my dog! My little fur ball is a rescue, fearful yet protective. Through the years her confidence has built and she can now roam this beach like she owns it. We are regulars and a lot of people know her as the "pink shark pom". We do visit other beaches but this one hits differently! I get a lot of questions and asks from other dog owners about safety and logistics before bringing their small dog here. It's pretty safe but I would still keep a very close eye and keep close to your small animals as there are ALOT of large dogs roaming freely. Sometimes some big dogs do approach a little too playful for my senior dog and she gets scare and protective and I do have to grab her and carry her in my arms. Most of the big dogs are at the front part of the beach and it gets less congested when you walk north. I'd say 97% dog owners are responsible, but I have seen a few where dogs get a little rough or dogs chase smaller dogs towards the parking lot (they can get hit by cars that way) and the owner doesn't do much to stop the chasing or separating. Just be mindful this is a leash free beach and anything is possible. Smaller pets should be watched carefully and do your part to protect your fur family member - don't get too "trusty". I love how this place seems to be bigger or just as big as the human beach next to it. A lot of non-dog people spend time at this part of the beach and it's comforting that people feel comfortable around all these leash free dogs. After 6pm dogs can go to the other beach where it's human only most of the day. As a rescue, I feel place has truly helped my dog opened up!!!

Ask the Community - Ocean Beach Dog Beach

Are there restrooms?

Yes. There are regular public restrooms nearby with outside showers as well.

Are there dog-friendly restaurants nearby?

Some restaurants with outdoor seating. But not sure what do you nearby, because I don't think they are walking distance, you probably need to drive.

Looking at having a dog beach day, mid August, are there any CV-19 changes, ie Parking lots still closed? Masks? No laying out? All still enforced? Any info is helpful.

Parking lot is open, mask on, sunbathing ok just keep 6 ft with others

Is this beach open since COVID?

It is fully open. Some people wear masks, most don't. Super awesome fun always!

Is this beach currently open now that CV-19 restrictions are lifting?

Yes! But parking lots are closed- so get there early to find street parking!

Has this dog beach opened back up yet?

It opened at the end of April. However the parking lot was not open and they had restrictions like no laying out, ect. Keep moving rules.

Does anyone know if it's open right now?

It is!! (:

Is Dog Beach currently open? I'm concerned about fully open access to the parking lot - street?…

The dog beach is OPEN! People are very respectful of maintaining distance. You still have to keep walking or running so no laying in the sun while the dogs play... Parking lot is closed but usually you can find street side parking within two blocks… Read more

Is this beach off leash 24/7?

Yes

Am looking at going to Ocean Beach with my pups on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend (not Sun & Mon). I've never been over a Holiday. Too busy? Too many dogs and too little parking to make the out of town trip worthwhile? Thx!

Hi Julie! My wife and I and our two dogs just returned from OB where we spent Easter break week. Happy to tell you that, just like last year, if you go during the week there is plenty of parking in the middle of the day.… Read more

What time does it open? Can I take my dog at 4am?

The parking lot closes during the night and opens again in the early morning but if you park elsewhere you can go to the dog beach at anytime as far as I know, at least I did.. The earliest I was there was 5 a.m.

Has anyone had a problem with fleas or ticks after visiting the beach?

We haven't had any problem...bring flea / tick spray if you feel so inclined, though.

What's the best time of year to visit Ocean Beach/Dog Beach. Will there still be plenty of dogs (and it is warm enough to wear shorts) in November?

You can visit Ocean Beach Dog Beach year round, there will always be a at least 10 dogs. Historical Ocean Beach temperatures for November are: Minimum 42°F… Read more

Are there public bathrooms nearby?

Yes there are restrooms/showers at the end of the parking lot. It isn't super close, but like a 2 minute walk.

Pretty cool place....large patch of grass with many concrete benches. No shade except for the perimeter....but seems like a good space for sure. Plenty of parking. There is plenty of parking - we've come at all times of the day and have never had an issue. You climb up a small hill and at the top you reach a large open grassy field. The trees are surrounding the border so you get a little bit of shade on the edges depending on the time of day. Also around the borders there are concrete benches to sit at, but we usually bring our own chairs. Our dog loves the open space here! So much room to run after her frisbee or chase other dogs. She definitely had good interactions with the dogs here, most seem very well socialized and the owners we've met have been friendly. Some things to keep in mind: - There are no poop bags, so you should bring your own. For a place that doesn't have them available, most of the owners here appear very responsible and have their own to clean up after their own pet. I've seen other parks with bags on site and the owners still don't pick up after their dog. - there are no water stations/fountains. However there are bowls around so you can bring water to fill them. - there are no fences. So once you climb up the hill, you're in an open park that has a natural barrier of shrubbery but I think there could be potential for dogs to wander away or out of it. We feel comfortable with our pup because her recall is pretty good. - lastly, no bathrooms!
