Order (Pre-order pickup):
· Traditional
· Lilikoi
· Guava
· Ube
· Total for box of 8 = $30.59
Prelude:
· The first question everyone will want answered is how it compares to Hawaii... IMO, I think it's just a tad unrealistic to make this comparison because in Hawaii, most of us are likely on vacation, in an amazing setting, walking around with an all-around happy feeling. If you expect to have the same reaction you had walking out of Leonard's, you're setting yourself up. Go in knowing fresh malasadas don't grow on every corner in the Bay and you'll be alright.
Pros:
· Contactless pickup in an easy to find, open parking lot, with convenient freeway proximity.
· Fair sized with a light, crispy exterior and a soft, reasonably airy interior.
· Dusting of sugar was just right for me - a bit less than you might have had in Hawaii, but I don't like things too sweet, so this was okay by me. (The label does say you might want to add additional sugar).
· Lilikoi and Guava hit the mark for me. Pungent, flavorful with just the right volume of filling - enough to enjoy, but not so much that it's overpowering.
· Traditional was solid as well. It's a good variety.
Cons:
· Ube. I love ube everything and this was a bit bland for me so I was a little disappointed. It could be that I ate it after the other three, but I feel like I've had stronger flavor in other ube foods before. I think ube is subtle by nature, so maybe a tad more sugar or more filling would compensate?
· No, it's not quite as light and airy as Leonard's, but since it's pre-order for pickup, I don't think they're made to order on the spot. When I picked mine up, the box was a bit chilled and there was also reheating instructions on the box, so yeah, a giveaway.
· I tried storing some of the leftovers in the box and some in the fridge, overnight. Either way the texture declined on the 2nd day and of course, even more by the 3rd day. If you're giving these as a gift or want maximum enjoyment, I suggest eating same day. If there is a better way to store overnight, I think a small addendum on the label would be helpful.
Comments:
· The box lists two reheating instructions (Microwave and Oven). Don't use the microwave - go the extra step and use the oven. If you've ever put bread or a bagel in the microwave, you know how bread type products become dry and chewy.
· If you're craving a malasada and going in with realistic expectations, I think you'll be satisfied. I will likely order from here again. read more
