It was a great day on the water with the Amelia River Cruises & Charters company at the helm…read more It was my first time visiting Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach and wanted to get an overlay of the area and the river cruise seemed like the perfect thing to get an overview of the area. And I wasn't wrong! The tour lasted about 90 minutes (and it leaves promptly FYI) and takes you along the shoreline of Amelia Island - past the shrimping boats and past a Civil War era fort - before heading towards Cumberland Island National Seashore. This is where the true fun of the tour was for me. I had no idea really the history of the island and found it fascinating how the Carnegies and Rockefellers and more of the country's elite used this random Georgia seashore as their private escape. The history of both Cumberland and Amelia Islands is incredibly fascinating and the guides for both the Florida and Georgia sides respectively were well informed and personable. Plus - you'll very likely see a ton of great wildlife throughout including dolphins and wild horses and pigs. It's a great way to spend an afternoon in the area and a fabulous introduction to Cumberland Island National Seashore/Park.

This 30-foot catamaran was the perfect vessel to explore these Florida-Georgia waters. Captain Terry was ready and waiting for us right at 1pm. It was super easy to navigate to North 14th street in Fernandina and find the marina right in time. We had some rain in the way over, but it cleared up just as we parked and embarked. Captain Terry provided safety precautions, showed up where to stow our drinks and gave us the lowdown on our route to the ocean. Once he put the sails up, the wind took us peacefully into deep blue. We saw several dolphins, 2 wild horses on Amelia island, and some pretty birds enjoying the open air. It was a romantic afternoon with my husband. We got to step away from Corona claustrophobia and feel as free as a fish in the sea. Terry even recommended The Salty Pelican, so we have another yelp place to dine in soon! Great boat for taking friends and family out to enjoy Florida's fresh ocean views and get some sun. The weather was kind to us and I only got a little sunburn. All of the guides on our tour were friendly and helpful. After a brief instructional on how to properly row in the kayak, they helped us in our kayaks. On the tour, we stopped a couple of times for them to share their knowledge about the creek itself and abut alligators. The information was very interesting. This also gave us a time to take a breaK from ok rowing as we had been rowing against the current. I definitely recommend this company and this tour. The trolley is also air conditioned which is great when the feel like temperature rises well over 100. The tour started at 1230 and lasted around an hour and a half. This was our first time to Fernandina Beach so it was a great way to see where everything is and to learn things some locals are even unaware of. The tour goes through the Historic District and we were told what was originally there and which things are still there like the Palace Saloon. The Palace Saloon is the oldest continously running bar in the state of Florida. The current mayor is also a part time bartender there. We also discovered many historic homes and learned the stores behind them. One house we went past was built over 100 years ago after it was ordered from the Sears Catalog for $1,000.-. Another highlight was 3 identical houses inside and out built by a guy for his 3 daughters. There are way too many highlights to mention. The cost of the trip for my wife, three kids and myself was only $70. We more than got our money's worth. We were also allowed to bring our 4 month old puppy with us on the trolley. Connie asked the other guests if it was okay to bring her and they said it was ok. So they are pet friendly as long as the other guests are too. Great tour!

I was recently in the area for a bachelorette party and we were looking for something outdoorsy to do that would be fun for our whole group. I am so glad we found this! Our group ranged in kayaking ability levels from quite adept to never-set-foot-in-one (me). Despite this, everyone in our group had a great time! For the newbies like me, you have nothing to be nervous about! I was pretty freaked out when I first got into the kayak, but our guides, Madeline and Rachel, were pros at making us all feel comfortable and prepared for the tour. The kayak is very easy to move around the water, and with just a few minutes of practice, I felt comfortable enough to start moving down the river. The guides will go at whatever pace the group wants to move. They are also very familiar with the river, and were able to point out a lot of cool plants and animals along the way. They even took us past the river's resident gator - from a safe distance! The tour lasts about 2 hours. I will admit that the last 20 minutes were the hardest for me, as my arms got pretty tired by then. But the more, ahem, athletic members of our group were totally fine. Despite this, I would absolutely recommend Amelia Adventures to anyone. Definitely check them out!
