Family Dollar is sort of hovering between Marshall's on the higher end and Dollar General on the lower end, but closer to the latter than the former in terms of quality. As I've noted elsewhere, you can't really get much for a dollar anymore at the Dollar store, and it's become just a low-low-end version of Target or Walmart without a huge amount of cost savings. This particularly Family Dollar is on the busline and is walkable to some of the closer Schenectady Neighborhoods, but I've found the staff unhelpful and there are no longer the kind of random lots of things that one can find with some delight at Ocean State Job Lot (or in days gone by, Pier 1). One plus for this location is it's right next to the Hellas bakery/Coffee Stop so you can get a nosh before or after browsing, but that and $1.59 will get you a cup of coffee.

The seafood counter was stocked with center cut pieces of Salmon. Checkout was efficient. The cashier packed delicate items with care. I needed help loading my car because I had many bulky and heavy (for me) beverages. A pleasant worker was available quickly to load my car.

So if you want to pay $80 for a cotton print tablecloth, in theory you can be helping the world out. Oh, the problems in execution, though. They can't really tell you how much of the money goes back to the native craftspeople, nor much about the sourcing or labor conditions. It's like Fair Trade coffee - you have to take somebody's word for it, and the word is passed along by the telephone game. I'd actually be willing to do this on faith if the crafts and items here were really unique or even to my taste, but they seem a bit mass-produced to me and without the hallmarks of individual craftsmen, so I'm not only not terribly interested in the goods but I'm highly suspicious of the general claims. This may seem a bit scroogey of me, but I think on the whole if I want to stimulate development in the third world I'll extend a microloan over the internet (very direct and very cost-effective) or buy somebody a share of a goat. I would normally just settle on the usual three stars, given my cynical skepticism above, but the hideously steep prices push it from "would go back and check it out occasionally" to "not going to bother" territory.

The restaurants are great and the theater is huge. There are some decent clothing stores and fun shops like lush and bath and bodywork's etc. It's a fun place to kill a few hours or a whole day if you wanted! It can be dirty in the bathrooms but I think that it's just that busy all the time it's hard to keep up with.

That's just the look and feel, aesthetically very old mall. I wouldn't be able to tell about service bc I hardly saw anyone with uniform that looks like they work for the mall operations. As for shops, there are quite a few decent stores - Zara, H&M, Victoria Secrets, Primack, REI, very typical mall brands. If you ever need something, outfit for something, hit this mall up. I'm excited to see a Singapore Cafe type spot is opening soon! Can't wait.

I was there today…read more(May 28 - noon) and whoever was working at the checkout was rude, impatient and could care less about delivering a terrific experience. I'm a Platinum customer and have been loyal for years. If Hallmark cares about sending the very best this person isn't helping you to deliver that message. Give it some thought they're not helping your business. Not sure I'm coming back when you're treated like this.

The staff was always friendly, which is the most important thing in a store like this. One thing I missed about other Hallmark branches was the 40%-50% discount on Christmas ornaments the day after Christmas. Here, they offered a discount but it wasn't as generous. I suppose I shouldn't fault them for that, but I rely on those sales to decorate next year's tree!
