Driving on the beach just feels weird to me but my daughter really wanted to visit so we went to see what this experience was all about. The Oceano Dunes cover 1,500 acres and are a huge draw for ATV's, Razors, four wheel drive and motorcycles. It is open daily from 7am - 10pm for day use. The beach area can handle normal cars and trucks. We arrived late in the day and there was not a ranger in sight. There is a small fee of $5.00 to take your vehicle on the beach. We paid by the honor system since the fee station was closed. After we paid, we went ahead and drove down the driveway onto the sand. Speed limit is 15 mph. We did not go far but found a great place to park and take in the views. The second time we went back for sunset and parked in the paved parking lot instead. Everyone that was there was having a great time with campfires, waves rushing in and out, dogs and kids running around. The temperatures were perfect, just a light hoodie was needed. Overnight camping is available but does require a reservation especially during high season. My grandfather spent many summers with his buddies camping here and fishing away the days. It did feel good to be here knowing this was one of his favorite getaways. This is definitely a unique experience. read more

This is near Pismo Beach and it can be an adventure. You are allowed to actually drive onto the beach and park your vehicle so that you are closer to the ocean. We had done this before, and we watched a couple cars get stuck in the sand which we really wanted to avoid. This time either the tide has washed out some of the sand or it have been compacted down by the beach services because there no patches of heavy sand that prevented us from driving the full length of the beach. We then came back near the entranced and parked and sat in the back watching the ocean. Unlike the last time, we left before sunset. But overall the experience was great. read more

When was the last time you actually got to drive on a sandy beach( 15 mph max) in your own vehicle literally a few feet from the waves with the tide coming in? We got to do this twice at this fantastic Ocean Dunes venue in Pismo Beach. A different sensation, fun, the wind, the waves, the sounds, the seagulls just a few feet away.; lovely and friendly folks setting camp; campfires allowed, beautiful pets and dogs also enjoying themselves. Then you get to drive backwards towards the shoreline just 8 or so feet from the water, move your foot under the rear bumper of your Jeep Grand Wagoneer opening the hatchback and lay down with the seats down next to the hummus, veggies and smoothies taking it all in. Just $5 to do this. Love that they have trucks actively going down the 4 mile stretch looking to help you if stuck or need any assistance. Loved this! read more

We stumbled onto this little gem after driving from Pismo Beach Pier. It's a pretty cool place where you can actually camp right on the sand and drive onto the beach. The dunes are huge, the views are great, and it's definitely a different kind of beach experience. Just come prepared and 4WD helps. Especially since we saw a few vehicles struggling to get out of the sand. It even reminded me of the classic My Cousin Vinny scene where the car gets stuck in the mud -- of course, you can't really compare, but it made us think of that scene. What a fun experience we had as a family by taking our jeep on a ride on the beach. Oceano is the place to drive your cars on the beach and the dunes. So much fun. I had been wanting to do this for a while now and finally had a chance. While going to Cambria on a mini vacation we stopped by here to enjoy the ride. Incredible experience. Did some Summer Beach camping and had an excellent time! We went from Sunday to Tuesday and let me tell you, coming during the week is a hack; lots of space in between the campers, and like always very friendly campers all around! Below are some tidbits and helpful hints for the primitive beach camping at the Oceano Dunes: * This is primitive style, meaning there are no designated campsites; come early to get the best spot options. Also, I highly recommend bringing stakes and some sort of bright tape or rope to cordon off your area * You can make campfires on the beach and buying local wood is encouraged rather than brining your own from different regions * There are toilets intermittently placed along the beach (some are porta-potty and some are a concrete chamber)...if you are able I recommend getting a portable pop-up toilet and tent. Ours was a lifesaver. * For those that need to deflate their tires, there are trucks that drive along the beach periodically and offer air (for a nominal fee) * Bring a shovel! read more

Impending Dune 1,500-acre Coastal Sand Dune that the state allows access by vehicle. The beach itself can be driven on/by pretty much any vehicle (AWD/4WD preferred obv) but the dunes need to be driven on by ATVs only. One can provide their own ATV or rent one from several companies in the area--but beware you need to certified by the State to get a rental to drive on the dunes. I believe it's just a couple of safety classes and your g2g, but it's been a while since I've looked into it. Anywho, we only came here to watch a sunset and it was magical. Seems like a great place to visit as it's a meager $5/per vehicle fee to access the beach and then you can have at it to your hearts content from sunrise to sundown. Fun area but gets very, very crowded during peak times. The beach area is nice as the vehicle traffic is limited to 15 mph. The rangers keep a pretty close eye on this but when they leave the beach speeders will speed. The recreation area has room for dry camping. The dunes area gets chaotic, please use caution and keep you and your family safe and alert for bad actors that fly through the dunes without due care. That being said it is an amazing and unique land use area especially for lawsuit happy California. Come prepared for the time you plan on staying as the closest stores, gas, and supply stores are all pricy, ATV Rentals are available and the equipment seems to be decent. There are quite a few 2 wheel drive cars that come to this area but that doesn't mean people don't get stuck or in danger, drive within your own skill set and limits to have an enjoyable time. I had been to the Central Coast several times but did not know there was this area to drive your car right onto the beach! There is also a section for ATVs along with rental shops and if you walk far along enough, you can walk the sand dunes which is what I did. There were signs when I was out there saying the sand was quite soft and since my car is low, I was not comfortable driving through on my own. It's probably about a mile of walking to get to the section without vehicles but it is so worth it. The scenery is just otherworldly and I was lucky enough to be there during golden hour and sunset. My partner and I camped here with our dog earlier this year and we had such a great experience! The camping area is dispersed among the recreation area, you can pretty much camp anywhere between certain mile markers. There are pit toilets throughout the park for camper use as well. When we went it was the "off season," so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We did some 4-wheeling on the dunes with our truck, but there were also buggy and ATV rentals available at the entrance to the park. Fires are ok on the sand as long as you only use natural untreated wood. Bring tables and water as they are not supplied (dispersed camping, remember?). But the sites were like, $8 a night for 10am-5pm the following day. Even day use doesn't close until like, 11pm! A great deal for a beach getaway!! Highly recommend!!! read more

Wait what? Yeah, we already knew about this one-of-kind playground after riding atvs here years ago. We drove our truck right on to the beach last weekend and into the dunes. It's pretty wild! People come from all over to ride their atv's or whatever apparatus they have.. Cost is $4 which wouldn't hurt anyone. Thats for the entire day and yes, you can leave and re enter later on. You have a couple of options. You can park your car and then go walking on the beach or you can drive whatever you drive right onto the beach. The sand is packed so you can take a 2 wheel drive car out onto the beach. You can drive for about 1/2 mile before you will need high clearance as there is a shallow creek of 8 feet to cross before you get to the actual playground which are the dunes. Then, you're truly on your own. RV camping? No sweat! There are thousands of campsites and motel rooms to stay in as you would want to spend more than a day here. Gotta be alert and take your time. Some people are full throttle individuals that may not be looking for you. There's a danger factor to help ratchet up the adrenaline! One of a kind experience that I highly recommend. Take the car, bike, RV, whatever you've got. There's pizza and other delights nearby so you can enjoy your hot food on the beach. Best time is as the sun's going away. Super bummed about our experience this time. Will definitely be coming again when the reservations are lower. We have come to the dunes many times but this year was like no other. We noticed once we had gotten there that people were blocking off entire sections with caution tape not allowing anyone to get near their "spot". Unfortunately we went up and down the entire beach multiple times and wouldn't find ANY spots. Being there are "499" available spots I was shocked at how limited the spaces were this year. Thankfully a kind couple allowed us to set up in their area since it was just my husband, my daughter, and I. However, a group of people deemed that we were "too close to their spot" and expressed their frustration. As we were unhooking and setting up our site they were just watching us and it was over all a super uncomfortable experience. I understand wanting to be secluded but it is pretty ridiculous to block off entire sections and be upset when someone sets up near your caution tape. Mind you we were by their caution tape not their trailer!!! We are kind and reasonable people who don't like to intrude so we decided to book at a near by RV resort instead. I would urge anyone coming this year or any years in the future to get there early and have respect for others who pay to camp at the beach as well! We all want to enjoy the same beach and it's a bummer when you are made to feel like you don't belong somewhere you paid to be. read more

You can drive your car on the beach! We drove down right at low tide. We only had a 2 wheel drive and entered from grand street entrance down a steep hill and fishtailed through the sand out to the next street and out pier ave. It was scary and fun at the same time! A car wash is a must after driving on the beach. The last thing you want is your vehicle to get rusty because of the salt water. There is a car wash at the Chevron on Grand & 13th. Keep going straight out the Oceano Dunes exit until you hit 13th. It'll be on your right side. Get "The Works" because it washes the underside of the vehicle also. Now for my review. What a great place. I've never driven on the beach before. Stay on the wet compact sand and you will have less of a chance to get stuck. Even saw a group riding horses. What is this talk about being able to drive my car right onto the beach and drive off highway vehicles OHVs in the Sand dunes?! Well it is dune true! Right in the town of Grover Beach and Oceano is the Oceano Dunes SVRA. It's right on Pismo Beach and operated by the California State Parks. There are two entrances to the Dunes. The entrance furthest south is the closest to the dunes. Daily pass $5, in and out privilege allowed for the day. But if they fill up, too bad. Overnight camping is $10 a night but those reservations are made solely online. Don't expect to show up at the gate and expect a spot to be available. For more deets look, go the the state parks website. Cars can drive onto the beach, 4wheel drive is recommended though. Stay close to the harder packed sand to avoid getting stuck. First time visiting Pismo. Family wanted to check out the dunes. The state or park website is a bit confusing but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND making camping or day use reservations online. Not pricey at all too, especially for camping ON the beach. Directions getting there were super simple to follow. We had two vehicles driving down to the beach & both were capable enough, one was a 2 wheel drive, & the other was a small Honda. Beach is BEAUTIFUL!! Omg the drive along it alone was amazing. Once you pass the atv rental sites whatever you see available is yours for the picking. Don't tear down the caution tapes, people put those up for multiple reasons; personal atv space, space for the littles to play safely & ward off atv riders from veering too close to their sites. Our truck did get stuck a few times, & they have officers patrolling up & down the beach for help. My suggestion, do not forget a shovel. If you're not traveling with an RV that has a toilet, I suggest setting up camp near the porta-potties. There are no showers on the beach but there are some locations off the beach that I heard of that are coin operated for showers. Sand to walk on was nice & not pebbly or HOT where it hurts. We also set up camp near the ATV rentals so that we didn't have a far walk. The dunes were equally as amazing as the beach. So many dunes to explore & have fun. Even though it was packed, with everyone spread out all over the place it can easily look like you have the entire place to your party. Sunset view & camping on the beach is DEFINITELY a must do again. read more

Mood- OHV/Dunes/Work Upon entering it is a madhouse. Everyone is lined up waiting for the rangers to open up so they can be paid and allow you on the beach. If you are just walking on, there is no fee. However if you are bringing all of your OHV's, Trucks, Camping - there are fees. Have you ever went on an adventure in a CanAm but your view as you come up from a 40ft dune is the ocean? If not, get your toys and head on over there. This was not like any other place I have been too. Everyone was riding on their Atvs, OHV's, Trucks, and Jeeps. So many people and so much to see all while on the beach. There are so many different sides and things to see while you are visiting these dunes. There is a part on the backside that has trees. The visuals you will see are amazing. SO many photo ops. This place is several acres huge, take a map and pay attention to your surroundings. It is very easy to get lost if you have never been here before. However be smart. Dont go down into something if you cant get out, dont go extra fast up a hill if you dont know if there is a deep bowl on the other side. And most importantly I cant stress this one enough." PAY ATTENTION TO THE LITTLE KIDS" Have fun, ride hard, race, drive it like you stole it. But be smart. All it takes is one wrong move at the right moment. Would most def recommend - pricing is beyond reasonable for a day pass. there are lines that go all the way back to PacHwy - so if you have reservations for one of the rental companies plan accordingly or you will be late. Super fun place to drive around with ATV. For $5 you can have fun in this recreation sand dune all day long. Some people would set up a fire place and watch to sun set. It's a beautiful scenery. You can rent ATV's right next to the entrance. Costs vary depending on the types of vehicle starting about $50 to $70 an hour. If you have your own ATV, you can definitely try it out here. But please don't drive your SUV off the path into the soft sand dune area. I got stuck in the sand even though my car is an off road four wheeler. I was fortunate to have a Good Samaritan rescued me. This was a great experience for my husband and I! For just $5 you can drive out in the sand and stay for the entire day! We had some cinnamon rolls from Old West Cinnamon Rolls, found a nice spot, and sat and ate them while watching and listening to the waves. It was pretty cold and super windy, but we stepped outside, took pictures and enjoyed the view. Overall we had a very good time. read more

Nice beach but beware. This is one of the remaining beaches that allow vehicles onto the sand. Crazy drivers all day long. We got an AirBNB near their entrance and it was busy. There was no way I would let my kids go okay by the water I supervised (not for fear of the water but of the crazy drivers) they have dune buggy and quad rentals. Bathrooms are available and camping on the beach, renting a condo in beach and they also had some motels and mobile homes for rent. Walk to the visitors center and lagoon. Stores and restaurants nearby. A great food stand right there. Fun Fun Fun! read more

The beaches (Pismo Beach, Grover Beach) are absolutely breathtaking. The drive along the highway itself already gives you the most beautiful panoramic views of the sloping hills, with the coast stretching as far as the eye can see. And let's not forget that admission into the beach is FIVE DOLLARS!! For ALL DAY admission to the Dunes!! What a steal! FYI the entrance is on Grand Avenue. It took us awhile to find it because it's not entirely clear on the website. And considering that other beaches have metered parking, if they have parking available at all, Pismo is worth it just for the price of admission. AND you can take your car down to the sands. I recommend spending a day here, sunbathing, swimming, picnicking, and enjoying the lovely, azure skies. Take in the sunshine. Walk along the shore. The water is so clear and blue. Not too cold, but the air is cool and breezy. Pack blankets, chairs, snacks and enjoy the view. A lot of cars camp out here for the day and bring footballs or frisbees to throw around. It can be a bit windy so pack light jackets or dress in layers. read more

Such a fun spot! We just wanted a day out at the beach and away from busy tourists and this was the perfect spot. It is the only coast in central California where you can actually drive your vehicle along the shore. There wasn't much people at all and the dunes are near the ocean which makes it a perfect family spot. Vehicle riding is the only thing allowed in the dunes right now due to Covid so, no quads or any other 4 wheel motors. Note to self; before heading into the dunes let some air out of your tires, so your less likely to get stuck. In the evening, you can light a nice little fire on the beach and enjoy the ocean breeze. Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area might be the only beach in the entire state of California where you could drive your vehicle off the pavement and onto the beach... and allow the waves to crash on your wheels. First time I saw this, oh about twelve years ago, I couldn't believe my eyes! What with the discharge prohibitions and very restrictive receiving water limits, I figured that was the first and last time I would see this happening. At the same time, I wondered if there is allowed anywhere else in California. Alas, twelve years later, this is still here and it is still allowed. AND... so far, this is the only place in California I've seen this allowed. I mean, the general public aren't even allowed to enter the LA River! Yes, we have a river. Google Conan O'Brien laughing at our cosmetically-enhanced waterway, it is funny! Everyone I was with agreed that it is only a matter of time before this is dis-allowed. All it would take is for one of the campers to lose control of their campfire, or a big fight, or a collision, or someone getting hit, or one of the vehicles breaking down and spilling something... before all this will be no more. Aside from the adverse environmental impacts of allowing dozens and dozens of vehicles on the beach, it is certainly a unique experience. There are also rental companies on-site and just outside the beach who rent out ATV's so you could zoom zoom zoom over those unbelievable dunes! You could bring your own vehicles too. Make sure it's either a 4-wheel drive or otherwise capable of navigating over this type of terrain. There is a one-time per-vehicle entrance fee good for day-use. The sunset is incredible! There is a bathroom facility right at the entrance. Port-o-potties are found in the dunes section. Overnight camping is allowed. Camping looks more like RV's parked in a parking lot. I don't see how it could be good camping if you're planning on setting up a tent on the beach. I mean, the tides... and then you're RIGHT NEXT to another car/RV. You most likely won't get a view if unless you put a stake as close to the water as possible. And then the rising tide will force you to move. read more

Following a sign off the highway for Pismo Beach, we reached a ranger station, and paid a $5 fee for entrance. The kind fellow asked if we'd been there before, and when we replied in the negative explained, "You can't drive your vehicle on the sand to the north, but you can drive anywhere on it for the 4 miles south of here." Wait, what? We took our map and pulled through, then realized we'd entered Oceano Dunes rather than our intended destination of Pismo Beach. I didn't even know such a place existed (it's the only CA State Park that allows this). Thankfully, we'd rented a Jeep, and I just started driving. At first I kind of hated it 'cause I didn't know what in the heck I was doing, but then it was actually kind of fun. Driving on the beach felt kind of adventurous and exciting, maybe just based on the novelty alone. My tip: If you're just trying to get around in the easiest manner, stay on the flat, wet parts of the sand, and avoid the drier, fluffy parts. Or do the opposite if you're looking for more action! We saw a lot of people letting air out of their tires, so there's definitely something to that, and I'd do a little research regarding the benefits if you think you'll be spending some time here. I'm sure it's worth that extra effort. There are two entrances, and while we had no line on our way in, there were about twenty vehicles waiting to enter at the southern station when we exited there, so either the Northern one is a better bet, or you just want to come earlier in the day to beat the rush. For us, we just drove a bit, parked, walked to the water, realized this wasn't the relaxing beach we had in mind, and left. I think it's super cool a place like this exists (we saw buses driving on the beach, for heaven's sake!), it just wasn't for us. But if you're a fan of motor sports, I'm sure you'll find this amazing. They allow camping, horseback riding, and I think you can even rent ATVs and dune buggies right in the park (but don't hold me to that). read more

My wife and I came here to relax and enjoy the beach on a day trip, and we enjoyed every moment of our experience here. The wind had kicked up pretty good and it was fairly cold while we were there, but there was plenty of places to sit and relax while we took in the sights and ocean air. Oceano Dunes is a beach where you can pay $5 and drive your car onto the sand. We came here a little bit before sunset and it was gorgeous. The beach is very clean and there are multiple locations to rent ATVs to go adventuring in the sand dunes. There were lots of RVs and SUVs there - most of which paid for permits to stay overnight. Luckily for us, we showed up during low tide. I was ecstatic to find complete, whole sand dollars at Oceano Dunes! Some were white, brown, purple, some had barnacles.. some had the animal still in it, some were furry... but OD is littered with sand dollars! I had so much fun collecting them. Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area - Bond fire till 11 pm - Parks Near Me - Oceano, California

I bought a Subaru Outback last year and was looking for some fun places to drive "off pavement ". I was up in the central coast California area and came across this place on the map. Great deal $5 for all day on the beach. You can drive on the beach and there are sand dunes you can drive also. I didn't have a lot of time as it was the day I was leaving to come home, but I paid the fee and drove up & down the beach at waters's edge for an hour. I can't wait to go back and spend more time. Maybe rent an ATV to ride the dunes. People had tents and RVs there were picnics, people wind and kite surfing. read more
