I literally brought beer, cigars, and bourbon ready to sit and wait; that was not the case! Lasting maybe 5-8 minute stops and depending on the amount of fish being caught, you either sit and watch or grab your rod and prepare for a fight. It was an adrenaline rush every time. Our boat hit the maximum amount of fish allotted to us by day 2. The Lo-An was spacious enough for 40 or so, but I'm glad we only had 18 anglers. Bedding was not luxurious by any means but a triple bunk twin sized mat. Two bathrooms with showers and an eatery seating about 16 people. Service was AWESOME! As a newbie, the deckhands were hands-on and help with tips and making sure you caught your lot! They helped from everything from setting up your rods, making sure you were able to catch your fish; to just making sure you were comfortable. Our Chef was amazing! Chef Raul busted out some gourmet style meals from Scallops, Pork Chops, and Duck Pancakes; yes, you heard me! Captain Adam was spot on where to go and when to go. Many times, he'd jumped down to help with the deckhands and much was appreciated by his humble demeanor. In the end, I don't know what the old Lo-An was like, but the New Lo-An definitely exceeded my expectations! Enjoy!

The harbor has a mix of shopping, dining, whale watching, and other assorted businesses to check out. There are restaurants, coffee shops, boat rentals, jet ski and kayak rentals, places to store your boat, souvenir shopping, etc. There is a lighthouse, and there are sidewalks so you can walk from one end all the way to the other end out by the ocean. And down by some of the boats are plenty of seals / sea lions to check out. They like to hang out on the dock sunbathing, fighting, frolicking, and general shenanigans. Lake O'Neill has been a destination for me and my family since 1983. Unfortunately, like many…read moremilitary MWR programs, it has seen a decline in visitors and overall usage over the years. That said, this place is amazing. If you have access to Camp Pendleton, it's absolutely worth the visit. The improvements over the past few years have been impressive from the RV campground and miniature golf course to the well-maintained sports fields and picnic areas. The entire park is clean, and it's obvious the staff takes pride in maintaining it. The employees are always professional, friendly, and welcoming. They do an outstanding job keeping the grounds looking great. It seems like Lake O'Neill has been somewhat overlooked since the Naval Hospital closed, but I'm grateful that commands continue to hold events and celebrations here. We recently celebrated Spouse Appreciation Month at the park, and it reminded me why this has been such a special place for our family for decades. Whether you're looking to camp, fish, host a gathering, or simply enjoy a peaceful day outdoors, Lake O'Neill is one of Camp Pendleton's hidden gems. If you have base access, I definitely recommend checking it out.
