We drove 97 miles to see if he could fix a couple reels my father and I used fifty years ago. I have to say I was saddened that it was not worth it because they don't make the parts. Very unprofessional fishing shop. I dropped off a reel to get serviced and was told that the usual turn around time is 6-8 weeks which I agreed to. Literally the day after I dropped it off I received a call from the reel technician Wally saying it was ready to go and I can come pick it up. I specifically told everyone in that shop the day of drop off to call me ahead of time before any new parts were installed because I wanted a price breakdown. These guys just went ahead and installed it and expected me to pay for whatever the charge was. I was already a bit annoyed by this but since the turn around time was so quick I was willing to pay for the services. Upon arrival at the shop I could tell instantly that the reel was not serviced properly and that it actually sounded worse than it did before I dropped it off. I left the reel in the shop hoping Wally would fix it in a timely manner. I was told I'd get a call the next to find out what's wrong with the reel but it never happened. I had to call them and was told "hey bud I'm sorry I'm partially deaf and couldn't hear what was wrong with your reel I'll give you a call on Friday to let you know what's going on." Well, Friday came and went with zero phone call. Here it is a week later and I'm calling the shop again only to be confronted by Wally accusing me of trying to rush the process of fixing my reel. "I ordered the parts and they came in and I'll have it done for ya hopefully by tomorrow." So once again this guy is running up the bill trying to charge me an undisclosed amount without even notifying me. This shop is an absolute joke and I would not recommend them to anyone. Now I have a reel that isn't working properly and I have to find another shop to hopefully fix whatever the hell this guy Wally did. It's incredible how dis functional this business is run. 0/100 don't step foot in this store unless you want to be taken advantage of. DO NOT GO HERE. For all I know these guys completely jacked up my reel and I may have to just purchase a brand new one. Ridiculous read more

If you are a fisherman that needs to get hard to get live bait, this is a great place. Some of the best surf bait is bloodworms, and they never have a shortage of that. They also have all the terminal tackle you need. Very helpful staff. read more

The old man who drives the super duty truck with PCBT on plate was very rude and aggressive to me while I was minding my own business near my parked vehicle in Oceanside. If he can't see well he shouldn't be driving! I was surprised at how someone driving a company vehicle would have the audacity to yell at a stranger/ pedestrian standing next to a parked car. If you can't fit the large truck don't drive through the tight space! When I'm a pedestrian it will be your fault if you hit me. Someone who has such poor special awareness should not be driving such a large vehicle! He's rude and a safety hazard for being a poor visually impaired driver. I will never do business there! We live in Orange County, but frequent this area because of Camp Pendleton and a number of our timeshare locations in Oceanside and Carlsbad. Went to shop to buy some salt water lures. I was the only one in store and 2 guys were sitting behind counter chit chatting and basically ignoring me there whole time. My first experience was lacking. No advice. Ignored while at counter. Was out of popular hooks. I promised I wouldn't return. By fluke, I needed some line and they are convenient. So I popped in. Left a rod which needed a small repair. They said it would take 4-6 weeks. Over 2 months later, still not repaired. Called the shop 2x over the last 2 months, nothing but excuses and lack of any insight to why the rod was not repaired. They committed to call me to provide an update on where it was in the repair process...nothing from them! They just continued to make up excuses. Walt the owner is a good guy and it's sad that parts of his business, isn't as buttoned up as it should be. I will continue to support them, just not rod repair. I assumed they ignored me because I was a woman, but after reading the reviews, maybe that's just how they roll? No one acknowledged my boyfriend or I for ages (~20 minutes) and when we went up to the counter to ask for help, they would only talk to him, and completely ignored me, despite us both needing new poles. If I asked a question (to Wally, I believe), he would only look at my partner when he responded. The other thing that bothered me was that no one working in the store was wearing a mask, and customers weren't required to do so either. I work in healthcare with elderly people I wouldn't feel comfortable going back for that reason alone. Giving it two stars because they're well-stocked for a small shop and have decent products, but I wouldn't go again due to the dismal customer service and safety concerns. read more

Wanted to give a quick shout out to this shop for their awesome customer service! I came across this shop on Instagram while searching for weeks for a particular Penn reel that is super hard to find bc of supply chain delays. I called the shop in the morning, they had the reel and were willing to hold it for me and also spool it with braid. I actually live in LA (again, no shop in my area had the reel) but I had someone local pick it up for me no problem. This place is awesome. I brought my Son there tonight to look at lures while I asked about restringing my reel with higher test line so I can catch bigger fish. I also had intended to buy the "salt" equivalent to the rod and reel I already had so we could fish in the ocean. You are probably starting to realize I have no idea what I am doing... haha. Yes I am a fishing kook, but I am also not afraid to ask questions. ANYWAY. The staff could have easily sold me some expensive line and salt water rod combo with a bunch of salt water lures BUT instead the guy clued me in on the fact that... 1. My fresh water rig didn't need new line, what I have is just fine, and told me to learn to use my reel in order to catch bigger fish and not snap the line. 2. I can use what I already have in salt water. 3. That includes my lures, "fish have no arms"... He then helped me figure out what kind of deeper ocean rod and reel combo would be good for what I am looking to do, suggesting I come back when they are in stock. Seriously small bait and tackle shop and bad service. They were out of braided 30 lb line, which is frankly crazy for a tackle shop. Employees are too good to help out. One even said "why are there so many people here." You'd think people stopping by your business would be a good thing. Showed up 30 minutes before closing time and they said they were closing and we should have arrived 10 minutes earlier. We drove to Angler's Tackle just up HWY 5 who helped us out 5 minutes prior to closing. Spent about $200 there on braided line, fluorocarbon and mono as well as some other miscellaneous items. Seriously, not all Bait and Tackle shops are created equally and my experience last month with Pacific Coast Bait & tackle was undeniably AWESOME! For several years I was going to a different North San Diego business for my saltwater hunting needs. They were pretty good and I had dropped several hundred bucks buying spearfishing and fishing equipment from them. I even wrote them a 5 Star Yelp review. Then came the day when I went in to buy only a new fishing license and lobster card. The owner was at the counter ringing up two other customers and, after he was finished, he continued to chat with them, even though he saw me waiting. At one point one of the guys he was talking to pointed at me and said, "I think it's his turn now..." and the owner of this business shrugged his shoulders and then turned his back to me and continued his long winded conversation. WTF?! 20 minutes later, when he was ready to help me, he said, "I want CASH ONLY for a fishing license and lobster card because I don't feel like paying the extra percentage to a bank/credit card company for something this small." REALLY?!?!?! Yeah, I was pissed, but I also respect small business owners. Rather than dish them, I deleted my 5 Star Yelp review, vowed to never come back, and that I would find another place to take my business. So I asked around and several of my surfing bros recommended Pacific Coast Bait & tackle. After reading the previous Yelp reviews about poor service I was hesitant but, hey, nothing could be worse than what I went though the year before at the other business. So this place is a little hard to find since it's right on the border of Carlsbad and Oceanside. The good part is that it's almost directly across the street from yummy Angelo's Burgers, in a small strip mall, on the east side of the street, and they have plenty of free parking. Walked in and saw two young guys at the counter. "Hey, how's it going?" one of them asked. "We're just ringing up another customer and we'll be with you in a sec." the other said. "Hmm, not bad." I thought. Within about 2 minutes one of the guys asked, "How can we help you?" "Umm, I just need to buy a fishing license and lobster card." "Sure. Just need your Driver's License." "Uhh, is it okay if I pay with my ATM card?" I asked. "Of course. Why not?!" he said. SCORE!!! So I looked around the store and found that they really have a really respectable selection of excellent fishing, spearfishing, and outdoor equipment. Their mark-up is fair, the inventory is well organized, and I ended buying a few other things while waiting of them to ring up my license. "You know I'm really glad I found you guys. You were a little hard to find but I'm stoked to find a new Tackle Shop!" I said. "Thanks. Most of our business comes from word of mouth and repeat customers." (THIS speaks VOLUMES!!!) So, yeah, what the hey, the guys who work here are young, but they really knew their stuff when I talked to them about fishing, spearfishing, and even surfing. I mean, it's not Neiman Marcus, nor should it be. The unpretentious quality of Pacific Coast Bait & tackle is really attractive. If you want someone to serve you a drink and wait on you hand and foot then go shopping for your fishing stuff at Orvis! After shopping I'm back in my car, answering a quick text message before starting the engine when suddenly there's a knock on my driver's side window. I roll it down and it's one of the guys who helped me. "Hey, you shouldn't leave without this. You left your Driver's License on the counter!" he said, out of breath, after running out of the store to return it to me. How's that for customer service?! I asked for advice and was completely steered in the wrong direction on a fishing spot 3 miles away from the shop that should have been obvious. Came here yesterday and noticed 2 guys working. One talking to a customer and the other in the back assuming he was working. The customer left and the guy at the resister walked in the back and started to talk to the other guy about his sister and then about his girlfriend. I must had to have been there for 15 mins looking at rods and reels. Had one in my hand ready to buy when they started to talk about being hungry and one was going out for food. After he left I waited for the other guy to ask if I needed anything. Nope he walked to the back and never acknowledged that I was in the store. I quickly returned the rod and reel and walked out. Not even then did he ask if I was ok. Very unprofessional and not aware of customer service. I would rather pay more money for any fishing product at another place. I knew of this Bait and Tackle shop from passing it by over the years. Now I have a 6 year old boy and he's been asking to go fishing. Through good behavior he earned a fishing rod and reel but we needed some bait and some know how to go lagoon fishing. I did a little research on line to develop my rigging and then we headed over to Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle. I told Scott what I wanted to do (slider sinker rig) and asked him if that was a good way to go and he said yes, got me the sinkers, hooks and then to the bait. He said that the bloodworms were good for off the lagoon. I said okay lets do it; then he forewarned me that they bite :-O What? Like how bad can a worm bite? Well obviously enough to warrant discomfort, so he offered to cut their heads off for me !!!! Yay! I got my fishing license since I would be casting and reeling it in and off we went. So we took our little rod and real and bait and tackle to the lagoon off Tamarack. I cast out a few times then my 6 year old son cast out and guess what? A good local bait and tackle shop. While they really cater to the local shore/pier fisherman, they also have the supplies for the offshore action in case you need that up as well. I mostly get lots of plastics and other light tackle here for lagoon fishing. They also have frozen bait and live worms if you prefer. Prices are reasonable, but as is key to any small or local business, they have good customer service. Catch them when the store is empty, and you get some entertaining fish stories. I always like a place that will give you advice and tips to a novice. Some places or people tend to brush you off if you don't do the "Big Boy" tuna/marlin fishing, but not here. This is a good little shop. Been going there for years. Don't be afraid to ask "dumb" questions. They really try to encourage people to get into and enjoy fishing. One thing you should know, though, is the majority of the customers that go in there are extremely seasoned anglers. So when you have questions and they start telling you something, they naturally assume you know what they are talking about. If you don't, just tell them. They will break it down for the beginners. You just have to be able to swallow your pride a little and let them know that your a beginner angler and need a more simple explanation. read more
