It has free parking, and you can just walk down the hill for a bit of respite and look at the ocean. The dock usually has tons of local fishermen and people bring their beach chairs to just relax. Sunrise and sunsets are great to see native bird flocks in the area, and just before the ramp to the dock, the Deering center has restrooms and picnic tables if you're looking for a mountain feel cabin and woods feel to your picnic . The dock is currently closed for renovations, but can't wait to see what's done for the reopening on April 2021!!

There is a lot of history here at this 15 acre preserve. The land is currently owned by EEL, the…read moreDepartment of Environmentally Endangered Lands. The preserve is named after Hattie Bauer a school teacher, whose pioneer family homesteaded in the early 1900's. Hattie passed away in 1961. The land became a private farm in 1922 and a year later it was sold to Lee Arthur Fennell who turned it into one of Miami's first roadside attractions, Fennell's Orchid Jungle which opened in 1923.. Four generations of the Fennell family occupied the land for 70 years until 1992 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed the attraction. Fortunately for the Fennell family their luck changed when they won several million dollars in the lottery. Shortly after that the land was was purchased by the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program and Florida Communities Trust who turned it into a preserve. In 1999 Orchid Jungle was designated as a historic site by Miami -Dade County. The preserve has a loop trail with interpretive boards. Some of the old historic Orchid Jungle buildings remain but you are not allowed to go in them. The trail goes through a tropical hardwood hammock lined with gumbo limbo and oak trees which add to the feeling that you are walking in a jungle. The preserve contains rare plant species including ferns that grow in the solution holes formed when acid rain eroded the oolitic limestone. The Miami-Dade Parks Department periodically runs $6 guided hikes through Hattie Bauer. Call (305) 242-7688 for future dates.

Pine Shore Pineland Preserve is a small ecologically important natural area located in the middle…read moreof a neighborhood in Kendall. The pine rockland ecosystem that is found here used to cover 185,000 acres in Miami-Dade County. Now there is only 3,700 acres left outside of Everglades National Park. One percent of the rocklands that used to exist are now under the protection of EEL, the Endangered Lands program. Rocklands are at a very high elevation making it the logical place for the early settlers who came to the area to build. As more people built on it, the more they disappeared. These ecosystems are important because they are very biologically diverse, containing over 400 native plant species. Many of these plants are only found in this ecosystem. Rocklands provide protection for animals. An atala butterfly once thought to be extinct has found refuge on EEL lands. They also provide a critical stop for migratory birds. Raptors who live here help to control the insect and rodent population. Rocklands also filter our drinking water. There is no parking lot here although you can pull over on the swale. There is a short trail that cuts through the preserve. Along the way are interpretive signs explaining the importance of the rocklands. The more people learn about these critically important ecological areas, the more they will want to protect them out. So go out and explore and take only pictures and leave only footprints.
