Wanted to love it!! Beautifully presented food with above average taste, however hard to get service, more by nature of the operations than any one particular server. The gin bar was very interesting, and they have a small counter in the bathroom where you can take empty bottles home for decor, which is neat. We reserved a table for 2 at 9pm and arrived at 9-had to waited for 10-15 min by the packed bar (with little standing room) before getting a table. From here we were constantly flagging down waiters for service. The bread was brought with olive oil but no plates, and the bread had probably been sitting for a couple hours before our arrival as it was hard. We shared a number of small plates as those looked the most interesting. The gnocchi-chewy and the sweet potato flavor was good, and the amaretti biscuit crumbles on top with the savory dish was the most memorable. The octopus was charred and a little bitter, and the chickpea soup special was rather grainy-like watered down hummus but I suppose that would be chickpea soup. Also had tagliolini with caviar. It seemed that all waitstaff were working all tables, and while the service was quick after we had caught the attention of a waiter, it was weird to Flagg down four different people to order dinner, dessert, ask for missing plates, etc.

The restaurant boasted a beautiful ambiance in contrast to the rest of the city. I sat outside in the front with a view of the river. The interior felt more formal than the patio and the bathroom area was memorable as it felt like walking into a little garden. The bread plate was quite good with the most memorable option being the saffron rolls. We dined for lunch at which time there is an option to purchase two plates for 20 euro when one plate is approximately 15 euro, so it is a good deal. Soup served at lunch was lacking in flavor. It was a plain puree with oil drizzled on top along with a few seeds to texture, but I couldn't identify the type of green vegetable puree that composed the soup due to the lack of flavor. The salad was stunning with colors, edible flowers, and great flavor. A solid plate. The house white wine did not disappoint. It was balanced and crisp. My friend had the pork and reported that it was very good and the plating was contemporary and beautiful. The crudo was what I opted for due to the waitress saying she could eat it everyday. It was much smaller than the portion of pork. I do not have a big appetite and it did not satisfy me. The flavor was fresh and simple, but without any memorable, so I was disappointed that it was so plain and so small. The waitress was patient and had a sense of humor. Her English was very good and she seated us although the lunch hours were about to end. Overall, it seemed the plates were highly variable in how much we enjoyed them.

After a challenging 40 hours in Venice due to the "Acqua Alta", my travel companion and myself needed an amazing meal. My friends from Milan kept telling me to head to this region for dinner and drinks. After hopping on the easy tram, we ended up at Officina 12. We were both craving the Milanese dish that is yellow risotto with saffron. One with a veal and one without. Our server, and I apologize for forgetting his name, was delightful. We ordered the bruschetta to begin, which he helped us pair a wine with. Then my friend ordered the risotto without veal, and I ordered mine with. Insanity!! Pure deliciousness. We dined well and enjoyed life Milan style.

Ok first: the food here was amazing. The appetizers that we had: the calamaro in plancia, bruschetta, and the gambero mazara were amazing. The calamaro had a great smoky flavor and it wasn't chewy at all. The bruschetta had probably some of the freshest tasting tomatoes I have ever tasted. I would highly recommend this even if you don't like tomatoes. The gambero mazara was made really well and was overall satisfying. The main dishes were slightly bland in comparison. The breaded veal (cotoletta Milanese) was slightly bland and a little dry. However, the portion that they gave made up for the slight bland flavor. The desert is a must. The tiramisu was SUPERB. Great softness and perfect sweetness. The wait staff was amazing and interacted well with our family. The location was right next to the canal and the air was nice. As for room, there was limited outside seating but there was a lot of space inside. Overall great place and would highly recommend.

I've travelled to many cities over the years and this restaurant has the best T-bone steak in the world! You just can't beat this combination of flavor & ambience. Splurge a little & get the T-bone, you won't regret it trust me.

Go here immediately. What an amazing find in the middle of so many tourist traps! The food was very inventive and absolutely delicious. I had the burrata and the squid lasagna. I really liked their drink selections, and the waiter gave me a great recommendation for a wine. I was also able to get a sweet view of the canal. Everyone was extremely pleasant and attentive. I have nothing bad to say about this place. If I weren't so full, I would've loved to try their sister gin bar. It looked really good. One word of advice - if you're going to eat outside, time your visit to finish eating before the sun sets, or you'll be mosquito food. That goes for all restaurants in the area, not just this one.

Pinch is a total replica of American hipster craft cocktail bars, in Milan. The bartenders wear suspenders and do tricks with shakers. I'm waiting for an ironic mustache, preferably like the Moretti guy has. The drinks are exceptional. When I was there, they had one made of green tomatoes and mountain pine liqueur that was a taste party in my mouth. The aperitivo snacks are also really excellent, a small tray of various interesting crunchy things. No potato chips -- we're talking samosas in wonton wrappers with sweet chili sauce, Indian curry rice, a ham-arugula roll, and baba ghanoush. My second drink didn't quite match the first, but it was close. Also, the only bar in Milan that gave me *zero* grief about wanting a simple glass of tap water. In fact, they just give you one. Mega bonus points for that. I'm sick of paying for "aqua panna Toscana" that I neither need nor want. Been drinking Milan tap water in my hotel room for four days now. It's fine. Pour it on. Food offerings from the regular menu are a little hit or miss, but on the other hand, I had kind of stuffed myself with aperitivo. Had I been hungry, might've been a different story.

Pinch is a new bar right in Ripa di Porta Ticinese, not in the pedestrian part of the Naviglio, which means they don't have outside seating - except for the tables at the windows. It has a retro vibe, as if you entered a 1920s bar, dim lights, soft 1920's music; elegant but not ostentatious atmosphere. The cocktails list has about 15 signature cocktails, all with an explanation of the alcoholic level (medium or high), taste (fresh, spicy, bitter, etc.) and of course the ingredients, classic cocktails with a twist, made extremely well, with good ingredients. They also have a food menu but I didn't check it out since we were there for the aperitivo - which then turned into after-dinner drinks. I had the "South of the Border" with tequila, chartreuse vert, lime juice, sugar syrup and fresh mint, it was fresh and delicious, then I had another one and another one... just to be sure they were made perfectly ;) For the aperitivo, our cocktails were 8 euro each and the waiter (who looked like Robert Pattinson) brough a small tray with some snacks: rice and salad in small glasses, chips, mini-sandwiches and a couple of vol-au-vents - not enough to fill our stomachs completely but also not the average greasy aperitivo food. Nice staff, a full bar with quality bottles and clean bathrooms complete the experience. Too bad it's far from my house, but worth the subway trip back!

To start, my friend and I tried the red mullet with chestnut creme and the spicy duck with pumpkin fritter. Both dishes were delicious but I especially liked the duck. The depth of flavor in both the tender meat and the fritters made for an auspicious start to the meal. We followed up by splitting the Spaghettoni "Benedetto Cavalieri". I can tell why it never leaves the menu. So simple, but perfectly executed. Finally, the pork belly. The star of this dish was the celeriac cream. So refreshing next to the heavy pork belly. The food was great but what really stood out was how nice everyone was! The service in the well-appointed dining room was top notch with wine advice and care to describe each ingredient, but the folks at Belè went even above this. In a careless error, I left my phone at the restaurant and it was too late to retrieve it before an early flight the next afternoon. The restaurant helped me get it shipped back and stayed in contact to make sure I received it. Go for the food, stay for the wonderful people, and check for your phone before you leave!

Be ready when the waitress comes because this spot can be quite busy and they have a lot of ground to cover. Semi-pro tip: Whatever the question asked, the correct answer is "Si!" (this worked for me!) The salami and cheese appetizer was wonderful, with at least four kinds of sliced, flavorful preserved meat and wonderful cheeses including handmade, fresh mozzarella. In fact, when you add on the huge, free basket of focaccia and other types of bread, the appetizer alone is enough for four people. As for pizza, the dish here is not the thin and crispy style available elsewhere in Milan. Instead, it is a huge pillowy slice with whatever toppings you select. The small slice is massive and cannot easily be consumed unless you are very hungry. Alternatively, you can take as much time as you need since, in common Italian fashion, there is no rush. Savor and enjoy. Finally, for the ultimate in taste and texture, try the gnocchi with four cheeses. It's creamy, cheesy goodness with a slight pungent bite of Gorgonzola mixed in. This definitely blows away every Mac and Cheese on the entire planet. Bam. Done! Winner!!!

We wanted to take our guests to the Navigli district to show them the river, have a great meal and experience the nightlife after the sun went down. I emailed several restaurants along the Navigli a few days before to ask if they would be able to accommodate 28 people. For one reason or another, I couldn't get anyone to take us! But Mattia Bilotta at the Asso Di Fiori - Osteria dei Formaggi emailed me back right away and was happy to have us. He asked that we pick a few antipasti, a few primi Piatti, a few secondi piati and a few desserts so that they could be ready in advance. When we got off the subway, there was a lot of graffiti on the walls of the buildings and I was worried that I was in a bad part of town as we walked up to the restaurant. But once we reached the river from the subway, I felt better about it. And when I entered the restaurant to let them know that we were here, there was a huge stuffed cow in the middle of the dining room! I knew the kids would LOVE that, but I was not prepared for how much the adults would love it. Once we were seated, Mr. Bilotta brought out a small black board with the meals we agreed on in advance written on the menu. He also allowed us to order the specials of the day, which were written on a big black board on one wall of the restaurant. This meal was everyone's favorite of the trip, by far. Every dish that came out was more incredible than the last. Each person ordered what they wanted, but when the food came out, it was so delicious they were compelled to pass their dishes to people sitting around them saying, "you HAVE to try this!!" We sat and laughed and ate for hours. Some people even ordered more entrées after they were done because the food was so good! Visited June 2013
