On a recent rainy Saturday afternoon, my boys and I enjoyed exploring the museums and galleries at Ogden Union Station. Admission was practically free, and we enjoyed the several museums on-site. We loved the Browning-Kimball Cars Museum, which highlights the Golden Age of motorcar history with a display of unique and one-of-a-kind automobiles. We also enjoyed the Browning Firearms Museum, which showcases the legendary guns designed and manufactured by Browning Arms Company, located in Ogden for decades. The Utah State Railroad Museum was also fun and included many interactive exhibits that my boys loved. They also enjoyed watching the model railroad trains move around the various displays. We had a terrific afternoon at Ogden Union Station and had a great time exploring Utah's rich history together. Thanks! read more

Discover how how the west was won at the historic Ogden Union Station. So much to see at this location but I came for the trains. Large selection of engines and railcars that are very well maintained. These are not new show pieces, but retired work horses from the past that really let's you walk through a different aspect of American history. You can see and the smell the history of these cars. Engines are well documented and a docent (Norm) is on site to answer questions. It's really self guided friendly which allowed us to go at our own pace. So much more to see on other visits from cowboy and classic car museums. All contained in a beautifully maintained Ogden Union Station. I would recommend that this museum work on an audio tour so you can hear the sounds of the past as well. read more

This repurposed train station is the home of several interesting museums, each deserving its own review. We visited the Railroad Museum, the John Moses Browning Museum and the Browning Kimball Car Museum. Normally, admission is charged for each museum, but we happened to visit on 'Free Day'. The Railroad Museum contains so many artifacts of a bygone era, wooden trestles and steam locomotives. There is a display of the different types of railroad ties, not neckwear, the generally wooden timbers holding up the tracks. Some were concrete and even some exotic experimental materials. Many classic photos and nostalgic displays, as well, including a wonderful display of pocket watches, and an explanation of how important and meaningful they were to the development of the railroads. Some model trains are running inside, and the real ones are on display outside. The John Moses Browning Museum is not for everybody. It's all about his firearms. Virtually every handheld firearm in WW2 was developed or invented by John M. Browning. Several prototypes, one of a kind, are on display, including the classic 1911 and Hi-Power pistols. Yes, there is a room devoted to machine guns. His machine guns currently adorn modern American war vehicles, and almost all the aircraft of WW2 and Korea had Browning M2 machine guns tucked in their noses or wings. The man was a genius. The Browning-Kimball Car Museum is a collection of breathtaking cars from a very bygone era. The colors, the size, and the proportions of these vehicles are mind-boggling. Their condition is pristine and a sight to behold. The way they are displayed is no doubt due to the size and shape of the available space. Don't miss these museums at Ogden Union Station when you are in the SLC/Ogden area. read more

If you have a train lover in the family this place is lots of fun. Unfortunately they do close early like most of Ogden establishments. Also they clearly don't take security measures that seriously because a lot of the trains have been completely trashed. They don't keep up on the maintenance of the trains on the outside so it seems very dangerous around those areas. Overall unsure if I would visit again. read more

Union Station is an amazing location in downtown Ogden and has history on top of history as the hub of early train transportation for the country. They have a number of small museums, displays, and full-sized trains on display outside to look at and walk around on. This review is specifically for their hosting of our Christmas luncheon this year and they did a fantastic job! The tables looked festive and beautiful and they set us up with everything we needed from a large screen and projector to a microphone and speakers for our presentations. We ran into a slight problem with getting audio from our presentation laptop to the speaker system and they were able to quickly iron out the issue before everyone arrived for our luncheon. Great location, great staff, and a great travel destination. Overall a fantastic place to visit! read more

A hidden gem in Ogden and well worth the relatively cheap cost. This is a collection of small museums in Union Station, highlighted by the railroad museum that goes into a detailed history of the western expansion of the Union Pacific railroad info Utah. They've recently expanded and added a more interactive section as well, which my 5 year old really enjoys, which of course includes a large array of wooden tracks and toy train cars. Also on site are a firearms and classic car museum. The museums themselves are quite small, but a fun way to spend an hour or two. I only took a star away because catching them while they're open can be a challenge. Business hours are limited as it is (4 days a week from 11-4) and not always reliable. They will close whenever other events are happening at Union Station, which is relatively frequent. The past half dozen times we've attempted to visit during regular business hours, they've been closed exactly 50% of the time. But if you have a flexible schedule, it's well worth rolling the dice and killing a couple of hours. read more

This museum has lots of potential but it fails to deliver. Its split into two sections, indoors and outdoors. The indoor section gives a good history of Ogden and the development of the railway system. There are some model trains exhibits towards the end but most weren't working. The ones that were, only on train was running. The Outside section has potential but its disappointing. You can walk next to the trains but you can't enter. We've been to other train museums that have exhibits setup in the trains so you get a feel for different generations of trains. read more

I always enjoy this place. Has an awesome history of the Utah and American railroad and how important it was to establishing the west and America. There is also a huge browning gun museum here as Browning was founded just north of here. I recommend it as a place to get out the sun and relax and read up on history if you're in to that sort of thing. read more

If you love trains you'll love this place! The building in itself is gorgeous. The museum is decent sized (for a train specific museum) and has enough stuff to keep you and your kids entertained for a day of learning. The trains outside are free to the public and very neat to see! They even sometimes have trains come through that are not permanently stationed here. If you like pressed pennies they have machines too. Nice little gift shop. Nice train store inside (where you get and make model trains, toys, etc). I haven't eaten at the restaurant but it seems busy every time I've been. read more

This has to be one of my favorite places in Ogden. The history and memories are as thick in here as the air in Utah County. The Union Station represents a time that has almost left us but is still young enough that most of us remember pieces of it. I think you would be surprised that when you pry the kids off the Xbox or out of the home theater, they will actually enjoy this place. The museums inside are fantastic and the best part is they are generally staffed by someone with firsthand knowledge of the exhibits and from that era. If you ever long for a good visit with a passed grandfather or grandmother, this is the place to get it. T There is a good restaurant in the Station that is reviewed elsewhere (Union Grill) and several shops, boutiques, and even a couple of art galleries. The Union Station is from another era. It is fun to visit and I often long to go hear the stories, see the trains, and get back in to a piece of history that is slowly fading away. read more

My kids absolutely loved this place. We could have stayed all day if I had the time. There is a cute gift shop and great diner on the premises as well. The train museum was captivating. I learned a great deal of railroad history from the exhibits and the kids loved seeing the artifacts and model railroads. The Browning museum was also enriching and enjoyable. The train cars outside the museum were perfect for my two kids with boundless energy. They climbed and looked around and marveled at the huge train cars. We will definitely return when we are back in town. read more

Nice historical building in the heart of Ogden, UT. The fountain was not on when we were there so it was not as photogenic without it. The museums inside the building seemed pretty cool, but we did not have time to explore them. The various locomotive trains that were parked outside the Union Station building were very cool. This is a GREAT place for a family outing! I've lived in Utah all my life, just outside of Ogden, and I'd never been here before yesterday. It was only $15 for a family pass to the museum, and we had a couple of hours worth of fun for that. There are tons of interactive exhibits and what kid doesn't like trains?? The Browning and Classic Car exhibits were also very interesting. The building itself is just lovely. Next time we will be sure to ask for a tour of the train cars outside, as you do have to ask before you go out there. read more

I dropped by to view both the station and the Eccles Rail Center (roliing stock outside). For those of you wondering if you should visit, here is a list of the railroad equipment http://utahrails.net/utahrails/ogden-equipment.php Luckily for the railfan, the most significant pieces are under a protective structure. I have had the good fortune to see UP 844 operate out of Cheyenne, Wy; here is UP 833 with her tender (centipede wheel design). In addition, there are no signs which keep the interested from climbing on the locomotive. Another show stopper is the UP DDA40X #6916; her livery is certainly stunning. Finally, saving the best for last is the UP gas turbine GE GTE 8500 #26 (Big Blow) which is one of two remaining with us today. As for the Utah State Railroad Museum, there are many interesting exhibits and displays concerning the history of railroading in this part of the state. read more

This place is super cool. Especially to this girl who's dad has worked on the Union Pacific RR for his whole life. We came in here to grab lunch, but our experience was much more than that. We loved the train engines outside. Especially the Olympic car! So cool to see that history. All the old engines were awesome and I enjoyed reading the little history blurbs about each one. The inside is breathtaking. Altho we did not pay or go on any tours, we loved what we could see! This is a very cool spot and I would recommend it to anyone! read more

The museums here are a bit lackluster but the lovely architecture and history of the railroad in Ogden absolutely make Union Station a must see Ogden attraction. They have a small kids area that my young children enjoy. We have an annual pass to the Dinosaur Park and we get free admission on weekdays. This was so much fun! 4 different museums under one roof. The train museum is really incredible, and is the show piece. Our group actually came because of the Browning museum, and it was impressive too. We weren't expecting the smaller museums and they were a nice surprise, especially the car one. This is one of those wonderful old train stations that houses a train museum as well as a gun museum while still fulfilling its original function, although now that's more of a sideline. The museums were, and probably still are, amazing. In the very early 80s Alan and I took the train to visit my brother and his family. Having seen "Silver Streak I had lustful/romantic visions of the stateroom, but it was an upper and lower berth which filled one side and the side-to-side motion of the train hurt my back. No snuggling for us! A year or two later when Tam and I traveled to see them we had seats that were akin to the most comfortable airplane seats of the time. We took sleeping bags to serve as comforters and the ride was much more comfortable. There was a posse of children on the train, the older ones looking after the younger ones and Tam, at 10 or 11, was one of the older group. They were able to wander the train largely unsupervised. Going home, our train arrived at Union Station around midnight, which seemed very cool. A few years later the train began stopping in Salt Lake City rather than Ogden. We decided it made more sense to start flying again and that was the end of the train rides to Utah. More recently the station has become home to the Union Grill, a very good restaurant if memory serves, galleries and concerts. Last night's jazz concert was held in the Grand Lobby. The newspaper had listed it as starting at 7:30 so when we arrived at 7:20 we were late for the 7:00 start. Rows of surprisingly comfortable folding plastic chairs were laid out and more were set up as latecomers arrived. The audience was large and attentive w/ people of all ages, some students taking notes and a large number of well behaved little ones dancing to the music while parents and grandparents watched them fondly. The acoustics for the music were stellar. The group started out as a quartet or quintet and gradually added members. Outstanding were Don Keipp on drums and vibes and the bass player, also a psychologist, whose name escapes me, both professors at Weber State. Other musicians on electric bass, trumpet and sax delivered performances that varied. The announcements from the stage were almost completely unintelligible, the words lost to rapid speech and the high ceilings. The program consisted of jazz standards and we enjoyed it. It was a terrific use of a civic resource and I'm glad Jim saw the announcement and put the article on the refrigerator so we didn't miss it. read more

One low $5 admission for four museums and two art galleries in Ogden's old train station. It sounds like a big extravaganza of museums, but it's not a big as you'd think. It still took 1 hour, 40 minutes to visit. Among Union Station's, this one didn't have as much character. My ranked list of museums and galleries: - Eccles Rail Center (4 out of 5 stars): Located outside of the train station with a dozen diesels and a 4-8-4 locomotive. Try to have a docent open the military hospital car and the mail car. At opposite end of station is a snow blower with a giant red fan used to clear the tracks. - John M. Browning Firearms Museum (3/5): I didn't expect to like this because I know and care very little about rifles. The collection is big and was a good experience. - Utah State Railroad Museum (3/5): Exhibits mainly focus on the building of rail lines like the Golden Spike and the causeway line across the Great Salt Lake. - Wattis-Dumke Model Railroad Museum (3/5): Located at the end of the Railroad Museum, various major train projects in the region are recreated as HO-scale models. - Browning-Kimball Classic Car Museum (3/5): Cars of award-winning quality, but there were only 13 vehicles. The focus was narrow with American cars built in the early 20th century. - The Gallery at the Station (1/5): During our visit, they were selling works from children's book. - Myra Powell Gallery (1/5): Tiny permanent art collection. read more

We were here for Zombie prom 2013 and for a couple before that and the building is really pretty from the outside, if you look at it as an architectural find. Inside is dated but beautiful. It would be a great place to host events because there is a large room that can be used as a dance hall and then some other rooms that you could use for other purposes. read more

This is very nice historic site and a msut to visit if you are in Ogden area. I took some visitors from overseas and absolutely enjoyed it. They loved it so much they actually refuse to drive back to SLC and took a commute train instead. read more
