Solid 4.5. Unassuming kitchen towards the back of the convenience store, this place pumps out your favorite local grinds at an affordable price. The wait time is a little long and there were only 3 folding chairs for available seating, but honestly well worth the wait. You can also order ahead online BUT it seems like you can only do so for the next day, don't expect same day online order. We got the fried chicken drumettes with Korean dipping sauce and the kalbi plate; both were absolutely great. Chicken was crispy and moist, the kalbi was well marinated. If you're getting the tossed salad option, get the poppy seed dressing, trust me. Oh and upgrade to fried rice! The Mac salad was alright, but beware huge chunks of potato. While looking at plate lunch joints in Hilo, I came across a pic from Ohana Foods which made my eyes pop out of my head!!!! What was that pic of ??? "Ohana Foods" kinda reminds me of a place I went to on Maui called - "Uptown Kitchen & Food Mart", where the business is a gas station/convenience store, and in the back of the convenience store is an actual take out food joint. After looking at da many pics, and reading Bruddah Jarrod A.'s review, I figah if I go here, garans I gotta chance dat Korean Frrrrrrried Chicken Drumettes plate! Da plate comes with a GIANT scoop of white rice, and a choice of toss salad or mac salad (I got da toss salad). What can I say about da grub??? Da GRINDZ was as advertised! Da pic of dat Korean Frrrrrrried Chicken Drumettes plate looked Awesome, but when a Bruddah get one chance for actually eat da plate.........all I can say is, Bruddah Fran get da GRINDZ!!! Those drumettes was broke da moufth ono!!! The chicken was made fresh, but the wait time was minimum. I got (6) wonderfully deep frrrrrrried drumettes, and da star was dat Korean sauce...........da Korean sauce is so awesome, good on rice, and even salad. I'm visiting from Oahu and was looking for a place to eat. Thank goodness for Yelp! We dragged our niece who lives here too. The place is basically a gas station, mini grocery store and take out. The lady working the cash register was super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the guy who took our order wasn't - very short answers and impatient. It wasn't busy either. I was hoping the Yelp reviews weren't lying. It didn't take very long for our order to come - chicken katsu, boneless BBQ chicken and loco moco bowl. A different worker who called us was a 180° difference - very friendly and thoughtful! The katsu was perfectly made. Lightly crusted, but most importantly, not soaking in oil. My wife's BBQ chicken was very flavorful. No overpowering saltiness. The rice was SPOT ON! Perfectly moist! Our niece's loco was ono with a homemade patty, but the egg was too well done (yoke almost cooked through). I would definitely eat here again read more

Didn't want to cook tonite so I stopped to get two bowls. While I do appreciate the kind service and relatively good prices, my order left more to be desired. Ordered a loco moco bowl and a chili bowl. Even though i ordered a sunny side up egg, it came to me over/hard. It's no secret that these patty's are not homemade and I was ok with that. It's just that both the gravy for the loco and the entire chili portion was super super salty. I know us local folks like salt, but this one was beyond salty. Ohana Foods Kawailani is my go to spot in Hilo town!!! If I could give this place six stars, I would. I came in hungry and left fully satisfied and ready for kanak attack with a nap and pillow Let's talk about the steak: perfectly seared with a gorgeous crust, juicy on the inside, and seasoned with intention--not too heavy, but just enough to enhance the natural flavor of the beef. It had that deep, savory richness you only get from a proper high-heat sear and a quality cut. Now for the grilled onions: sweet, smoky, and tender, with just the right char. They weren't just a topping--they were a flavor upgrade. Every bite of steak with those onions was a little moment of magic. The white rice deserves a shoutout of its own. Fluffy, not sticky, and cooked to perfection. It soaked up the steak juices like a pro and balanced the plate beautifully. The Ohana Foods location is a really great neighborhood store! Ever since it has been there, they have provided much needed items at all times of the day. Over the years owners have come and gone but it's a great place to pickup ice, or snacks and beer. I have seen some good reviews about their takeout window, so I decided to do "the test" - a cheeseburger deluxe! The first problem... I called and was put on hold so fast that I didn't realize I was on hold.... Well, I was right up the road, so I drove there faster than they could pick up. The ordering window is on the far left by the big freezers. I placed my order and was told I would be notified when it was finished. Then the wait began..... when it seemed too long, I asked and they seemed really irritated that I asked. They told me that my order wasn't finished. OK so I waited and waited and waited. My wife and I sat down on some crates after looking around and waited... I saw a number of brown paper bags sitting on a shelf. My wife asked about our order and was told "it was there". I don't know how long it was there. Whatever OK, now to the burger. Honestly it didn't seem "char broiled". It seemed fried and the lettuce and tomato seemed like it was lying around in a bin or something. I bought 2 of them, one for my Mom and she said it was not very good. Just ok. I thought so too. I was very disappointed because I expected better. When I went back to Honolulu, I got a Wendy's single and it was a lot better. I think that pastrami sandwiches and other specials must be a lot better. But this is my review of their cheeseburger deluxe. read more

Another win for food at convenience stores! Menu is posted daily on instagram with its daily specials, window to order is to the left when you walk in, portions are generous, people are friendly and food is soooooo tasty. I got a sumo sized plate of chicken katsu (sooo moist on the inside and crisp on the outside) yum! and korean pork.. the marinade of this was delicious!!!! Sooo good even later in the day! I called Ohana Foods on Kawailani St. in Hilo on Thursday afternoon and was told that their kitchen was too busy to take phone orders. So since I live less than two minutes away I drove over there. When I got there the place was completely empty and I was the only customer. The two kitchen workers were just standing around talking. I thought that's strange, this is too busy? I ordered my food and it was done in about 15 minutes. I actually believed the girl on the phone and had expected to encounter a bustling business lol. read more

Rude lot attendant old angry lady yelled at me while I was feeding my baby. I payed for gas and I was feeding my baby while waiting for my family to get food. I was literally there for 5-10min after filling up I was checking my car for a road trip. She yelled loud and with a big gesture "you guys going to get gas or what!!!" A normal person would say hello and ask. I assume she was having a bad day. I wont support a business with rude customer service. The spam masubi was dry and old. Ohana Foods is the last place to get plates of food before heading up Waiakea Uka. I love the sandwiches with lots of fresh veggies. Dad loves the teri beef plate. Burgers and other plate lunches are delicious too. Good portion sizes. Service is always good. Order at the window, wait for your food, then go pay at the register. I recently started a new job nearby. I stopped by Ohana Foods to grab a snack on my way to work and was surprised to discover that they have a kitchen in the back of the store. So I took a chance and came back that afternoon and ordered a hot pastrami sandwich on multi grain bread. It was awesome. Then I learned you can call in your order and they will have it ready at the time you request. Double awesome. I've tried the Katsu chicken with double rice and it was delicious. I try to order something at least once a week. They also have daily specials. If you call the store you can find what the special is for that day after 9am. It's a hidden gem. Oh and the staff there are super friendly and welcoming. The Good: Friendly staff and great food from their kitchen. The Bad: Parking sometimes can be tricky.. Chances I'll be Back: Yes!! I made an online order and specified a certain pick up time. I was just getting ready to take a shower when I got the text that the food was ready 45 minutes early. I had to drop everything to go and get it early. The fries were soggy and the Ono tasted like cardboard. I learned where not to go if I want good food that wasn't prepared 45 minutes early and that I won't buy from them for quite a long time. Overall ruined my evening. read more
