Sometimes, the most important lessons are learned when we fail. These kids showed up and never gave up fighting for their goals of higher belts. When they failed, it didn't matter because they kept getting up and wiping away tears of disappointment and pushed forward until they had a smile of accomplishment on their face. Master Durant is teaching these students some fantastic things in his dojo as he's leading all of these kids into greatness!! To say that Master Durant and his staff are truly incredible is definitely an understatement. The reason we wanted to join ATA was because our 6 year old was struggling with his self esteem . Our son can be very shy around his peers and struggles with social anxiety. His first two months were spent getting him into the mat and to join his class mates. Master Durant always made sure to approach him and engage him. My son slowly began to trust him and began participating in class with Master Duran (one on one). His self confidence started to grow and now my son looks forward to class and has started to engage class with the rest of his classmates. I truly feel that this was possible because Master Durant worked with him at his own pace and celebrated all of his milestones. Our 3 year old also join also tiny tigers classes and loves James. It is a 12 MONTHS CONTRACT. They will never tell you that......we found out 3 months later from another parent complaining about it. In addition to the monthly charge you also pay $60 per child for testing and to just to get a new belt. Periodically pay for mandatory expensive weapons, & uniforms be ready to spend everything is just sales sales sales money money money here. Everyone gets charged different price for the material things they sale & they will tell you $35 something e.g. for a T-shirt but your card will get charged $42. Make sure you read the fine prints, take the documents home, read everything through, and finish your full two weeks trial before committing to their one year contract. In the beginning it was all fun and worth it until they started being mean to my kids & having this negativity tension towards us. Don't expect customer service at this place this man doesn't care about you because he gets too many kids but he also loose too many kids, however it doesn't affect him since he has that contract in place he charges a 50% payout for those who wants to end their contact. I wanted to cancel my contract after 5 months into it because we just didn't feel welcome there. However, I didn't because my kids were still into it. Kevin is fake and phony the first 1-3 months then after that you will see the true colors. My kids always complained about how they make them feel sad. Their existence is not even acknowledged regardless if they are seating in the front or the back. They don't tell my kids good or anything instead the kid in the front of them who don't know what she/he is doing will get the praise while my kids are giving it 100% and doing it correctly. They always talk to me and my kids with anger everyday on any given day as if we did something wrong. They liked to belittle my kids. My son used to be so loud and happy to come their but they killed that fast and now they're complaining that he is not loud enough. My 4 year old is very articulate he would tell me things like why he always says hi to other parents and hugs them but he never says hi to our mom? Kids are very smart they know and can sense when someone doesn't like them. They knew when they were being talked to or treated differently then the other kids. My son always gets sad when he has to work with Jayden because of the way Jayden is always so angry with with my baby they forget he is only 4. My little guy would say things like mom Jayden hates me because I'm cuter than him every time he shows up he takes my belt away & mean to me. My kid was moved from his tiger class to a more advanced class/orange belt initially I thought it was a great idea but later I came to learn and realized it was a way to isolate him from his friends/age mates. It wasn't done in his best interests. I thought their anger was directly towards me they didn't want me there so I started to just drop the kids off and stay in my car but when the kids came back they complained that they are even treated worse when I'm not their & that they're only happy when they work with Tray & Audette they talk to them nice & they give them Hi5s.Etc. They turned their google reviews off I'm sure no one has nice stuff to say about him. He is not genuinely nice unless you're part of their crew that hangs out with them outside of the dojo. I don't recommend this place. They're fake nice people. Paying him $400 to cancel was worth it because today see how happy my kids are at the nee place. The hatred and negative vibes he gave my kids drained their energy. Today my Kids started somewhere else for $30 each to start for 3 weeks, and free uniforms, per child $100 a month for 3 days and $120 for five days. Shop around first, finish your try out weeks first, read the fine prints, and don't let his fake handshakes, hugs, smiles, and offers put you under pressure to sign up at this place. read more

This school is amazing! Our family has been with Senior Master Durant for the last 4 years. I have 2 sons who train at this studio, with my oldest who recently earned his blackbelt. Family Martial Arts Of Green Valley has been my family's home away from home. We started with a Groupon special two and a half years ago. From the first class, my two kids (then, 3rd grade and 1st grade) were hooked. We soon realized that this place was exactly what we were looking for. Fast forward roughly 30 months and my kiddos are progressing on their way to black belt. The classes focus on more than just the physical aspect of martial arts, but also critical life skills like self-esteem, belief, respect, and honestly, to name a few. Master Durant and his staff have so much patience and understanding and he always stresses that he is willing to listen and help with issues at home. I remember clearly one night somewhere in our first few months when we dealt with an abundance of attitude from our oldest. Master Durant sat on the floor with her and had a big discussion with her. To this day, I don't know exactly what was said, but there was tears and a hug at the end, and make st important, improvement at home. I always feel like he has our backs as parents and that means the world to us. I've read some of the other reviews and I have to say our experiences have always been nothing but wonderful. This is something our kids have dedicated themselves to. There is so much opprotunity to grow and compete in local and regional tournaments (covid paused that a bit, but we're ready to get back at it). Very unethical for a place that preaches about integrity. Not a school, a business. I regret enrolling my son here. The classes were crowded and he needed instruction before being asked to complete tasks. Then often, the exercises had very little to do with martial arts. Why are 7 year olds doing burpies? It's lazy instruction. Moreover, my son's actual school schedule conflicts when the martial arts schedule of all the classes except for Saturday. When I explained this I was asked to pay roughly $700 to unenroll him. Since then, for four months, they have charged me $150 a month for nothing. I can afford the $150 for nothing and can't afford to pay the fee to get him out either. Very cool guys, very cool. read more

Recently going through a divorce sent me looking for something for my 11 year old son where he could release some of his emotions in a positive way and grow. He needed a role model to look up to who showed him how to communicate, be respectful, have discipline, courage, be a leader and have positive self esteem. Back in February 2018 my son's grades in school were terrible, and no matter what I did, what teacher I spoke to, how much time I spent with him on homework, his grades did not improve. Then, based on the recommendation of a close friend, I started my son at the Family ATA on Gibson. It was great! Mr. Pyne took the time to talk to my son about his grades and started encouraging him to do better. The only issue with the Gibson location was that it was so far from home. Then, Master Kevin Durant opened up Family ATA of Green Valley on the corner of Windmill and Pecos. I asked my son if he minded changing locations and he did not care. Actually he really wanted to quit. I would not let him quit. We started going to Green Valley ATA and it has been the best decision I have made for my son. Master Durant really cares about the kids. I told him what was going on with my son and he took time out to talk to both of us. When my son has a bad day, he can tell immediately when he walks in the door. Master Durant pays attention to his needs and encourages him to do better every time. When my son needs to cry, he does, and Master Durant is there for him. When his father left him on his birthday, Master Durant involved the whole class for my son's birthday and made it a happy day for him that he won't ever forget. My son is now more respectful at home, has more self esteem, is able to better express himself and is more disciplined in completing his school work. His grades have all improved from C's, D's and F's to ALL A's! The best part about being involved with Family ATA at Green Valley is not only Master Durant, but also the other kids and parents that are there. We have become a family, supporting each other, cheering on each other's kids, talking to each other, and learning from each other. A Minnesota family walks into Master Durants ATA studio.... kind of sounds like a start of a joke right? Well it's not, this ATA is no joke! From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a handshake for me and hug for my wife...I wish I received the hug...anyways Master Durant welcomed our two young kids into his studio with open arms. I watched Master Durant and his assistants very closely from the start and how the studio trained our kids and how he handled other students in his studio. After attending 3 classes or so I knew if Master Durant offered to babysit my kids I would have no worries, in other words I felt completely comfortable on how he handles his students! The exact quote that came into my head was Master Durant is firm when he needs to be but fair! I thoroughly enjoyed watching Master Durant teach a class, when students would get out of line like disrupting the class he is trying to teach he handles the situation very well, as a parent I teach my children to respect people and that's what our kids did when they were on Master Durants time. I also enjoyed when Master Durant would get the parents involved in the tigers class... for example when he asked me to come onto the floor so he could show the tigers class what the 9 strikes looked like on a person with the bahng mehng ee weapon, I trusted him but the ninth strike made me nervous!! I really enjoyed the time my kids got spend learning from Master Durant, Jaden, and James. There is one moment in particular that will always be remembered by us, we had just got the kids signed up for tigers sparring class on Friday's our daughter was full on ready to go but our son was soooo nervous. He had his uniform and all of his gear on, he started tearing up and then started crying stating he was scared... we called over Master Durant and asked him if he could take a moment to calm our son down and get him on the sparring floor. Master Durant came over and sat on the floor with our son and explained to him that everything was going to be just fine and in no way was he going to let him get hurt. They both walked onto the sparring floor together and Master Durant was right there with our son through most his sparring rounds, by the next class our son was happily ready to spar and his confidence level was boosted!!! Master Durant was sooo good with our children and I wish we could still be attending his class. Signed up on a Groupon. I felt really uncomfortable because I was pressured into signing up every time I went Even though I paid for a groupon. I didn't even want to go because it was uncomfortable. When I finally signed up I couldn't make it with my son to every class but that's ok that was on me. My kids go out of state every summer for months. I wanted to pause classes. I understood if you were on vacation for a week you still paid and got extra classes. However my son was gone for months. I just wanted to come back. And not pay for something I was not using. I did not want the extra classes. We can barely do the 3 days a week they were offering. They insisted we pay. So here's the thing. If they were accommodating I would have stayed. Ok so they werent.so I fought the charges with my bank. So now they threatened me with an attorney over a kids karate class...when my husband tried to call and reason with him he didn't budge. He asked for a copy of a contract he agreed to email it he never did. I clearly was in the wrong because my bank reversed the charges. But here is my thing. You need a serious lesson in customer service this isn't real estate. This is a kids karate class. If you were accommodating you would have kept my business. If you were not so childish to threaten attorneys or fight my dispute I wouldn't be writing this long review. So the take away CONGRATS you got an extra $200 from a kid who was in another state all summer. Who is confused why we don't do karate anymore. I hope you feel good about yourself. My advice to any family: read your contract there is no gettong out even if you're dead. This former real estate agent treats your kid like a sold house. read more
