I ordered the tempura (13 pieces) & curry katsu don. The curry was very East Indian, and not at all what I expected. The tempura was very overpriced in my opinion. The tempura shrimp were very gritty when bit into. I checked what was gritty and it was the poop vein of the shrimp was intact. They weren't cleaned. So gross!

I was greeted with a smile, service was impeccable. They were very quick and prompt, asking what I needed, etc. appreciate the service. When I saw the my bubble tea come out in a cup like this that I get to take home, I was thrilled! I really feel they go the extra mile. They're all so friendly, and the food was great. I'd love to come back and try more food. Portion size--exactly what I needed. I have to say the spicy pork ramen wasn't that spicy. On a scale 1-10 I'd rate it a 2 or 3. The decor of the restaurant definitely gives that Japanese feel, they even have a mini-mart where they sell products from Japan!

Excellent menu and service, never disappointed! We've been coming here since they opened - we especially love the great selection of interesting maki. Fish is always fresh and tasty!

Always soooo delicious!! Our favorite sushi restaurant and we love sushi- have tried many restaurants. The quality of the fish is always first rate. They are creative in their rolls and sushi dishes. The Ohaba Ya Blossom is sublime! Service is pleasant and accommodating. Such a treat to eat here.

My friends recommended this place for their lunch special ($25 for any ramen and any roll on the menu). I like cheap, so I agreed to it. I ordered the seafood ramen, which was ok. The egg was a bit overcooked for my liking, but the noodles were decent and the broth was fine; all in all, nothing particularly memorable about it. I then had a mango roll (can't remember the exact name), which wasn't bad if you got past the roll being too mushy/ soft. The mango mayo was pretty solid. I tasted a friend's grilled eel roll and same issue: it was too soft/ mushy, but tasted fine otherwise. This isn't an authentic Japanese establishment though, it's Chinese run, hence the subpar texture of the sushi rolls. All in all, this meal was nothing special, other than it was cheap. I'd go elsewhere for my Japanese food. Free wifi available. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

This was my first time trying their sushi and I was very impressed with the size of the nigiri as they were huge. Taste and quality was pretty decent, but I thought it could be better, price point seemed slightly higher, but overall, I really enjoyed my meal. Another decent sushi place in St. Albert, and I would absolutely order from here again.

Ramen. Ramen. RAMEN. You know there's going to be a new post whenever there's new ramen in town. Let's try and keep this short and sweet, if you want more details, check out my first review on Ohana-Ya Five types of ramen on the menu but they are all in the $11.00-12.00 price range. Trip #1 - Bento box A ($12.00) - beef with mixed tempura. Comes with edamami, maki, steamed rice and choice of miso soup or a salad. They forgot to bring out my buddy's miso soup but I think there was enough food for him. The bento boxes are great value here. - Pork gyoza ($7.00) - six pieces of fried pork dumplings. They were tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. If they gave more gyoza, it'd be worth it. But they don't. - Shrimp shumai ($5.00) - if you're going to go with an appetizer, try the shrimp shumai. Nice and light with a Japanese twist. Yeah, that's a dollop of mustard on top of hoisin sauce. - Shoyu ($11.00) - soya sauce based broth. Two pieces of cha sui, egg, green onions, bamboo shoots and corn. The noodles had a nice chewy bite to them and the bowl is decently sized. My broth was a bit lacklustre, especially compared to the tonkatsu. It reminded me more of Chinese herbal soups. Lacking depth and flavour, the broth tasted watered down. - Tonkatsu ($11.00) - pork bone based broth. Pboy was in l-o-v-e. The only time I've been to lunch where he wasn't chatting your ear off. Too busy diving into that bowl of creamy, flavourful pork broth. He would have swam in it if that was a possibility. This was probably the best broth out of the three. - Tan tan ($12.00) - spicy sesame minced pork. D-Bone ordered this one. He didn't realize there wasn't any cha sui in his bowl, otherwise he would have ordered some. I had a taste and you get hints of peanut in the broth. Trip #2 - Miso ($11.00) - soy bean based broth. I decided to try out their miso the second time we came for ramen. This one was much better than the shoyu I had previously but again, the broth was still lacking any real depth. I guess it's passable for Edmonton standards but meh. Overall, I think the ramen is pretty average at Ohana-Ya but hey, it's another option for all you ramen eating lovers out there. Especially if you can't make it out Saturday morning to Yuzen and are craving it for lunch!

Just curious trying their promo of $10 per Ramen on Sundays. If you crave for ramen that is not pricey go in Sunday. Taste is nothing special but not even bad. Staffs were hospitable.

    Ramen served during lunch Mon-Fri

My boyfriend and I came here last Friday specifically to try their ramen as I heard they're now selling ramen during their weekday lunch hours. We arrived at 11:15am only to find that they don't open until 11:30. Not a problem. We darted over to Cob's Bakery a couple doors down to grab some baked goods while we waited. When we walked into the establishment, it was FREEZING!! Sooooo sooo cold with the A/C blasting. I'm thankful I had a jean jacket but still.... I couldn't get warm. I was so cold I asked for hot water as my beverage. There was another guest who arrived at the same time as us, and he actually left the restaurant to go to his car and came back with his winter jacket! Lol. Anyways, they serve a several varieties of ramen ranging from $11 - $12. Shio (salt); Shoyu (soy sauce); Miso (soybean paste); Tonkatsu (pork bone broth); and Tan Tan (spicy sesame minced pork). I opted for the Miso bowl while my boyfriend chose the Tonkatsu. The bowls arrived after several minutes piping hot. Eagerly antcipating my first bite, I found it quite disappointing. The broth was overly salty and lacked depth. There were lots of noodles - almost too much compared to the toppings received. I opted to not get the bamboo shoots or fungus added to mine (since I dislike either); and was left with a very bland looking bowl topped with green onion, bits of corn, bean sprouts, some seaweed, and ONE piece of char siu. The ONE piece of pork I received was soooo fatty that by the time I removed the layers of fat, I was left with a nickel size piece of meat *tear*. Oh well, the char siu itself also lacked any identifiable flavour. As for the Tonkatsu my boyfriend ordered, it wasn't much better. The broth lacked the umami and depth it should have and he also found the portion of noodles too much (he couldn't even finish). Overall, a disappointing ramen experience despite having high hopes! I look forward to a real good ramen place in Edmonton.

Update (only on ramen): Edmonton's ramen race has begun. There's been an influx of ramen lately, from pop ups to storefronts and I could not ask for anything else for my hometown - ramen is my absolute favourite thing to eat. Hands down. Ohana Ya Japanese Restaurant in St. Albert is the latest to serve up ramen, an addition to their sushi centric menu. Unlike its competitor across the road with Saturday lunch-only ramen, Ohana Ya offers ramen during the weekdays for the lunch rush. Who would have thought that St. Albert would have a small ramen culture of their own! Five kinds of ramen are offered, $11 a bowl: shio (salt), shoyu (soy sauce), miso (soy bean paste), tonkotsu (pork bone broth), and tan tan (spicy sesame minced pork with peanuts, $12). All bowls, except for the tan tan, are served with char siu, bamboo shoots, beansprouts, sweet corn, fungus, and a boiled egg. For an additional $2, you get two extra pieces of char siu, and for an extra $1, you can have an extra side item. I assume that means another egg. Josh was my lunch date this time around, his (questionable) first time eating ramen! He ordered the tonkotsu ramen and paid extra for the char siu. The noodles aren't made in house but were wavy, good consistency, and one of the better noodles I've had in Edmonton and area. Ohana Ya at least is sourcing delicious noodles! A sip of the broth gave me a taste of creamy, rich, and salty pork bone broth. I understand that an "under-seasoned broth is a crime" (high-five to you, fellow ramen lover, if you know where that quote is from), but whoa. It was a touch harder to finish and drink the broth near the end. I ordered the miso ramen, the fermented soy bean paste a favourite style of mine. The char siu was moist and very nicely done. I hate it when I get lean char siu in ramen. The half egg was medium-hard boiled and very lightly marinated. The menu pictured different bowls, one with a perfectly cooked soft-medium boiled egg, whereas the next photo showed a hard-boiled one. I'm going to assume that the kind of egg you get is a surprise! I really enjoyed my bowl, a good portion and loaded with toppings. I appreciated the two different kinds of seaweed. I would have preferred for a slightly less salty broth to enjoy the bowl from start to finish, but otherwise it was a solid bowl of ramen for a good value. As they just started offering their ramen menu, hopefully this was just a part of the kinks that need to be ironed out. Comparing it to Yuzen's weekend ramen is a hard sell, seeing that you'll never have to choose between the two on a given day. Ramen is a labour intensive dish to make and I appreciate Ohana Ya Japanese Restaurant for serving it up daily, let alone offer five different kinds. Definitely a must visit when you're in the area or if you have a free weekday lunch. Try it out!

Ohana-Ya is a dependable Japanese restaurant. It is not the best sushi I have ever had, but it is most definitely not the worst either. I think my point here is that you know what you are going to get when you go here. It is very standard for north American style sushi and it seems to always be fresh, which is pretty important when going for sushi. Ohana-Ya is one of the better places to go for sushi in St. Albert, although there is not much for competition. I would recommend it for lunch or even a quick dinner on a week night. With that said, you would be just as well to make the drive into the city to go to a place like Kyoto, or Mikado especially if you are going for dinner or on the weekend. The menu is in a cute booklet; appetizers, sashimi, nigiri, aburi sushi, sushi combo, rice bowl, uramaki, chumaki/futomaki, hosomaki/cone, sushi burritos and combo options. - Miso soup ($2.50) - O got a small bowl to start. She said it was salty but good. - Tamago nigiri ($2.00) - tamago is always my benchmark on whether a place will have good nigiri. SY's was great. Great texture and slight sweetness to the egg. - Chop chop hosomaki ($4.25) - this was my favourite of the two hosomaki's. Really fresh, melt in your mouth. - Spicy tuna hosomaki ($4.25) - the spice is flavourful and nicely balanced. Good but small portions. - Inari nigiri ($2.00) - bean curd. The skin had a sweet, chewy texture. Basically, tofu wrapped around a ball of rice. - 2x Aburi salmon nigiri ($2.25) - I can only think of a few places in town that do aburi style sushi. These were nicely seared and melt in your mouth. - Salmon sashimi ($10.00 for 5) - fresh, good quality and reasonably sized pieces of salmon. Can't really ask for anything more. The hosomaki (small rolls) are appropriately priced between $4 and $5 per 6 piece roll, but don't let the small price fool you - it's delicious and with a decent amount of filling and not just rice. Our favourite was the Aburi BC roll - at $10.50 it was one of the pricier options on the menu, but this roll would easily run you $15+ at any of the Edmonton sushi joints. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

The oily greasy element hurt my stomach and gave me a small headache so I can't say I enjoyed it thoroughly but taste wise it probably would satisfy someone. My friend seemed to like everything but we didn't finish that dish first. The place is kind of small but the menu is efficiently full of different types of dishes. I recommend ordering from here atleast once.

Checked out the brand new St. Albert location of Banh Mi Nhon Hoa this past weekend. So excited…read moreto have this Vietnamese street food shop in St. Albert! Hubs and I shared chicken satay sub ($7), Peachy colada (fresh fruit bubble tea $6), beef salad rolls ($8), and Pho ($12). Everything was delicious! The salad roll dipping sauce was sweeter than I am used to and less peanut based. Still good - just different. All of their bubble teas are fresh fruit based which makes this Mom very happy. They can also do a dairy free option. Of course the bread and butter here are the delicious subs! Bread is baked in house daily and oh so perfect. I can't wait to go back and try a different sub, the spicy noodle soup, and a vermicelli bowl!
