The trails here are absolutely beautiful -- lots of variety with different terrains, and I even got to see the creek that flows into the White River. My guide was fantastic, super friendly, and pointed out interesting things along the way like wild hog tracks on a tree and a spring where the hogs had made a little "mud spa." It really made the ride special. The only downside was my interaction with the owner. I had called earlier in the morning to check if they were open after a heavy rain, and a very kind lady explained that while reservations were preferred, I could just call about 30 minutes before arriving. When I did call later, the owner answered and was very upset that I said I'd be there in 30 minutes, not realizing I'd spoken with someone earlier. Once we cleared up the misunderstanding, she seemed more businesslike, but it definitely left a negative impression. My advice: make a reservation in advance to avoid any issues. The ride itself is absolutely worth it, but the overall experience could be smoother with better communication at the front end. read more

Took a 2 hr ride today. NOT IMPRESSED. The guide did not talk to us at all. I tried to engage but he gave an answer to a question and that was it. No volunteering any useful or interesting information. It was basically 2 hrs in silence with uninteresting scenery. Such a shame. Such beautiful country and the trails are crap. Nothing worth seeing, horrible guide, worst riding experience my family has had. read more

My anxiety was at an all time high riding the horse but Ms. Irene was riding ahead of me while guiding my horse & so kind to keep making sure I was comfortable. I have been here a handful of times and have always loved the service and staff. I went again expecting the same service, and I left very unhappy. I did an overnight ride with 3 other people. We all had previous riding experience except for one person. They did not go over instructions on how to properly ride the horse for the individual in my party that has never rode a horse before. They literally just threw us on the horses and off we went. This is prevalent because during the ride, we met another group of riders and our inexperienced rider did not know how to guide the horse back on course without following the other group and our guide just looked at us hoping that we could figure it out. Of course, my group laughed about it later and we brushed it off because in hectic times, it can be difficult to backtrack and help.. WE GET IT. But then when we got to camp, I was expecting that we would be able to ride the horses independently. (Which I understand that may not happen and I wouldn't have been so upset if I wasn't already told before hand that we could do it.) we paid $800 for an overnight stay, and I was not impressed. I'm not sure if because our guide was soft spoken and didn't want to seem rude, but they didn't help start a fire, we had to start our own fire, for both the evening and breakfast. They gave us horses that bucked, and thank God that the rider who got a bucking horse had previously worked on a ranch and knows the way around horses because they put EVERYONE ON THESE HORSES. The rider handled it with grace, and our guide said "yeah, he bucks because of horseflies." UMM.. WHAT?! On the ride back, the inexperienced rider was so uncomfortable that they decided to ride back to camp in a vehicle, and because our guide was not feeling well (which I completely understand, you can't control sickness) we had a 13 YEAR OLD CHILD guiding us back to camp (which again, I'm not mad, the 13 seemed to have more horse experience than our guide, but it's the fact that horses are animals, they have a mind of their own, how can a company expect a child to contain a 1,000-1,800 pound horse? Not only that, but there were 2 other people in the vehicle who took our inexperienced rider to camp and not one of them offered to get out and help lead or ride the horse that the inexperienced rider had left behind. The 13 year old guide was a little weary to lead the horse back and rightfully so.. SO WE LEAD THE HORSE BACK. Yep, we paid $800 to guide ourselves and lead a horse. Eventually the rider that had worked on the ranch began to trot with the TWO HORSES HE HAD because the horses were biting each other and had so much energy that he had no choice but to try to relieve some energy from the horses. When we got back to camp. Of course a rude employee (I'll leave her name out for courtesy, but she is not at all nice) gave us the very explicit run down on how they don't have insurance and we can't "run the horses" but again, WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO, the horses should be trained to not do that, to not buck. And then she proceeded to say that the rider should have let the horse buck him off and he should get back on..... I was so disappointed because this was a birthday trip for me and 800$ was spend on nothing in my opinion. I wanted my money back so bad, but by the end of the trip I just wanted to leave, and I am sure even if I tried I would not get a refund. I wasn't going to say anything, but I still had many feeling about how me and my friends were treated. read more

When we arrived we were completely ignored. No one greeted us or even acknowledged we were there. We walked inside and there was no one in the office. While they put several other people onto horses, we stood outside next to them. Again, no one said anything to us and they just continued getting everyone on the horses and started to leave. I should also mention that while they were preparing the other group, one woman in particular was extremely rude and unprofessional to the guests. She said "that one and that one, come with me," gesturing at two women waiting for their horse. When she put one woman in the horse, she said "have you ever ridden before?" The woman said no and the crass woman respond under her breath "oh geez." With much annoyance and exasperation, she told her to steer the horse the direction she wanted to go, and then just walked away. It all seemed very unprofessional. We got in our car and left after waiting 30 mins past our "appointment" time, without anyone addressing us. After a while, someone called and asked if we were coming to our ride. We explained that no one said anything to us when we were standing there. The woman on the phone just said "oh well you have to sign in." I explained that no one was there when we arrived and no one greeted us or even explained that was what we needed to do. We were really disappointed. read more

I've been wanting to ride and it was difficult finding a place in the off season in the Mountain Home area. I called the Trading Post and found them to be very accommodating. She was more concerned with me arriving safely than on time!!! We got out horses, mounted up and headed out for a 4 hour ride that included lunch ( your choice of beverage, snacks, sandwich/burger whatever you please ) The ride takes you cross highways, up valleys, through the pines past old abandoned homesteads down to a beautiful river. We couldn't cross it this time due to flooding and the river being high and moving fast. Christian was our guide. A real sweet intelligent young man the was quite an unexpected joker as times. Made me most pee laughing!!! While we rested the horses and took in the beauty our lunches were brought to us via special delivery. Oh yeh, it was raining and they DO provide rain gear at no extra cost!!! So, we finish lunch and mount back up. It's getting to be early evening, eagles flying for their last daily meal, the sounds kicking up in the woods the smell off the leaves against the slight fog and mist... we begin seeing deer as we headed back. They were moving in small heards seemingly not aware of our presence! ( Bring a Camera!! ) when you make it back to the Trading Post there are 2 things you should consider... 1) TIP YOU GUIDE!!! Christian was a pleasure to have as a guide. Show appreciation for his skill!! 2) Check out all the Cool stuff they sell at the Trading Post; homemade jams/jellies, local made honey, they have hats, tack, cloths, jewellery, post cards, knick knacks, wall pkaques.....there is something in every nook and cranny!!! Very reasonable prices too!!! Also, DON'T Scream when you are on a horse; It's STUPID & Irritates the horse and could get you tossed! Be Mindful and PLEASE, take your garbage out with you Don't litter!!!! This is a Beautiful drive on winding roads that leads you to this loving, lost in time, O.K.Trading Post. It is said that John Waynes grandson rides there and that the family is related to Thee Jesse James?? I had a Great time and plan on going back when the flooding slows. Felt very rushed. I had to hold on to my 2 yr old for dear life Bc they did not have double saddles and we didn't fit together. They just threw us on and off we went. They finally had a lady lead us bc I could not hold my son and keep control of the horse. Had he fallen, or both of us, it would not have been pretty. The rest of my family had an ok time. read more

We took the hour and a half ride and the horses were well mannered and easy to ride. Me and my daughter went on a ride here at the start of summer. It went very nice and smooth even though my daughter is a first time rider. My horse was very calm and behaved very well. It all brought back memories from when I used to ride as a kid. Half hour was $38. read more

The animals there are not well taken care of they had no running water, the pony had overgrown hooves, horses were kept saddled, and if you actually pet them you could feel that they were not groomed or WASHED back to NO running water. I hope you actually look at the whole picture. And if you don't think keeping a horse saddle is bad well I will tell you why. Bc it gives them saddle sores. And more horses also had overgrown hooves and it hurts a horse to walk. Also, horses need to be washed and brushed after long rides like that expesilly on a hot day. I would give it zero stars but I can't. So plz go to somewhere else and pay attention. If the horses seem in harm or hurt don't ride plz. read more

I was unaware that the horses were normally done between 5 and 6 PM. This is the time we were mounting up. With me: my 10 year old who was being rope led by the guide and my friend's 16 year old daughter. At the end of this four horse line of follow-the-leader, I observed the horse in front of mine doing everything possible to prevent being saddled. The guide was very verbal in letting us know she cared not to deal with the reins that kept being jerked out of the riders hands or hear with our problems to keep the animals moving forward on the trail. The horse ridden by the 16YO was jerking and up on his back legs multiple times while throwing several fits. An experienced ridder had fear all over her face! It was not until the guides stirrup broke that she then turned us around. The short 300 yards back felt like a 45 minute ride of terror. Just as I was about 5 feet from dismount, I looked back to see the 16 year old flying through the air. In the end, it was made known the lady who assisted with are mounting the horses had hit hers because she said he had bitten her. Upon hearing why we had returned back so soon, she struck the same horse with a flag stick (used to stop traffic for horse crossing). We received a full refund ($71; one hour for 3) and a apology from the lady behind the counter. She seemed shocked by the horses behavior saying they had him for 16 years and to come back in the morning. The girl cried all the way back to the hotel and was in pain for days. The place is as beautiful as the horses but, the help ruin the whole experience and it now an ugly memory! read more

First of all, I called a week in advance to book a 2 hour ride for two - we hoped for a more private ride for just my boyfriend and myself. We arrived half an hour early and they still had 20+ horses out front but they pulled an older horse from the back. They told my boyfriend that Jake will try to lag behind but all you need to do is give him a little kick then he'll catch right up. My boyfriend used to teach horseback riding so he knows how to control a horse but it didn't matter what he did, Jake had one speed and one speed only - which was about a quarter mile behind the guide and myself the entire ride. The 20 year old guide had only been working for the company for 2 days and had NEVER been on the 2 hour trail, so he admitted that he had no idea what he was doing and was just going to wing it. He never found the right trail so he literally just took us in circles around the same one, which was honestly the most disappointing part. The guide told me that if my boyfriend and his horse continued to fall behind, to just let him know and we would stop for them to catch up. Despite me asking him to stop on several occasions, he ignored my wishes and just continued on. Not only did Jake lag behind but his legs kept giving out and tripping all over the place. The guide's horse refused to cooperate so our ride got cut short by more than half an hour. When we arrived back at the trading post, I jokingly made comments about my boyfriend's horse having one speed only and every single person (except the lady who put him on that horse) said that he was always like that and there was no getting him to catch up. My boyfriend and I went back into the store because he wanted to buy a belt buckle and when we walked in, the owner asked how our ride was - I said I somewhat enjoyed mine but I doubt my boyfriend did. They never once asked why he might not have enjoyed his experience and when he went to purchase a belt buckle, I even laughingly said "Well, since his horse was so slow and our ride got cut short by more than half an hour, you're going to throw that buckle in right?" The owner asked why our ride got cut short and we explained that our guide's horse refused to cooperate and we were forced to come back. She never once offered an apology and in fact, all she said was "That's a new guide and he just isn't going to cut it..." After all of this, I discovered my boyfriend was even overcharged by $10 and we were never compensated for anything, Even more insulting, we were told that they'd "throw in" an extra 30 minutes next time we came to ride but I can assure you that I will NEVER do business with OK Trading Post again. read more

Our 8-yr-old daughter, my husband, and I went riding with OK. It was a really fun experience. Our guide, Irene, was especially delightful. Kind and supportive to our daughter and helpful as my husband's horse didn't want to get started on the trail. She was really engaged with our family and fun to be with. Our daughter started off being led by Irene and her horse, and then she offered to let her ride her horse completely on her own. What a great experience for her! She was so proud of herself. Before we started out, I was told that the horses sometimes like to snack on the grasses but not to let them because they have a hard time walking and eating. My horse (Daisy) was committed to her snacking, but we got along just fine as I learned how to encourage her toward more walking and less snacking. If you are in the area, definitely look them up! They are very reasonably priced as well ($12/ half hr). read more
